If you are asking from the point of view as a vegan or vegetarian, there are many ways to get your complete Proteins in. Soy, miso, spirulina, hemp seed, tempeh, amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa are all complete proteins unto themselves. Foods with incomplete proteins can be eaten throughout the day: nuts, legumes, lentils, peas, Peanut Butter, Combinations of foods also create complete proteins. hummus + pita Beans + rice tortillias + beans Pasta + cheese pasta + beans cheese + whole wheat bread tofu + salad
  2. I am a vegetarian, and am almost 2 years out. I have had NO problem getting enough protein, however for the first year, and even now I sometimes use protein shakes to boost my protein. I throw a muscle milk lite into my ice coffee, easy peasy! I can't eat as much in a sitting... but can graze like no ones business... and eat plenty of the wrong things. I have gained some weight, but still am SOOOO happy I have the sleeve. I am having to go back to "diet" eating, but that being said, its still easier than before. You do not have to give up grains, however the first year you need to really focus on protein and low carb veg to get the most out of your sleeve. I really missed the veggies, and started making veggie soups, blended at first, and could drink a lot of thoses... at a low calorie/carb cost. It took many months before I could eat raw, salads, fruit skins and such, but now, no problem. The time will pass, the sleeve will become more forgiving, and it will be easier to gain. It is a great tool though, and well worth the risk in my opinion. Oh, and I was lactose intolerant for a few months early on, making it hard to get protein through milk, cheese and such..(whey was fine), but that went away after 3-4 months.
  3. This surgery and it's requirements are a lot tougher for a vegitarian than they are for meat eaters like me. OP I'd highly suggest you post a question with the vegetarian word in the topic so that if there are any here they can share how this works for them. I'd be specific so that you cover what you eat and don't eat (ie do you do milk, eggs? etc) so that you can get better advice that is more specific to your issues. I know that in my research I read about challenges that people who don't eat meat deal with. Its not as easy by any sense of the imagination.
  4. Thank you for all your perspectives. I realized that I should explain my assumptions or logic as it were. Are my assumptions invalid? Assumptions- The VSG will help with appetite control. This is the MAIN REASON I am considering this option. Right now my problem is I can eat a lot and before I feel full. I expect with VSG, I can feel full on a LOT LESS. - The initial phase will involve a lot of Protein shakes and such. I can do this in the weight loss phase but cannot sustain for rest of my life consuming processed shakes. My expectation is that I can eat NORMAL food in life once I am in maintenance phase.. just much much smaller portions of it. This includes salads, and some whole grains like quinoa, brown rice etc. I can eat with my family and not have to make separate food for myself always. This is the reason I am choosing VSG as it is not a malabsorbtive procedure. We cook most things from scratch and for most part make healthy choices. Ms Skinniness --> I made a mistake in the A1c number. It is 6.6 which is now considered diabetic. I read that study as well. One of the points made was that it is more likely to prevent diabetes if the surgery is done in early stages of diagnosis when the beta cells in the pancreas are still working OK. So I am interpreting that as if I have to do surgery, earlier is better. OTR Sleever --> We have already checked with insurance and we are covered. amazon13 --> A lot of very good soul searching questions.. I have to think about this. The ones i have most trouble with are (a) Ready to eat protein with only a little veggie. I need to be able to consume vegetables. This is the primary source of my nutrients as I am a vegetarian. (b)Ready to possibly give up Pasta, rice and potatoes forever. Am I unrealistic to expect that I can do this in moderation in life? Say 1/3 cup of pasta or rice?
  5. Hi, I am a newbie here and this is my first post. I have been reading a lot of the posts here and researching VSG. I would like you all to give me some honest feedback on whether I am a suitable candidate for VSG. I feel that others I might ask have a strong bias one way or other --> The doctors are all for it as after all it is what they are selling. My family and friends are all against any kind of surgery .. seeing it as either weak will or me making a mountain out of a mole hill or worse commiting body mutiliation. You are all a group of strangers but you have walked in these shoes and been there.. I would be very grateful for your candid advice. So Am I a candidate for VSG 40 yr old female 5ft 2in Currently 194 lbs. Never been lower than 125 lbs. Life long issues with weight PCOS for 25 years with related issues (infertility, hair loss, dark skin in under arms and neck, hirsutism, cystic acne) Diagnosed as Diabetic 3 months ago (A1a of 6.3) High Cholesterol (Triglycerides - 215 / HDL - 3 /| Cholesterol to HDL ratio - 6.4) Most of the weight I carry is on the mid section. Family history of diabetes, High BP, and cardiac issues Have had 2 surgeries prior which resulted in some keloid scarring - C-section and breast reduction for medical reasons (nerve issues, back pain) Am considering VSG as I really really do not want to do a lapband and have that foreign object in me. I eat healthy at home with organic foods, whole grains, made from scratch stuff. But when I do eat out, it is harder. I do have a sweet tooth. Vegetarian --> Protein is going to be an issue. I eat dairy and eggs. I do have 100% coverage via my insurer. This should not influence my decision but I am reading it as medically supported proof. Exercise - I exercize at least 2-3 times a week. Last 6 months I have been working with a trainer on resistance training. I love to hike. I really really do not like to take pills. I am tired of being fat, too sick to do stuff, not finding nice clothes, not being able to keep up with my kid, avoiding photographs and generally feeling like I am going to be miserable till I die.

    Crying.

So very normal! I swear I thought my husband was going to commit me to the local mental health facility while I was on clear/full liquids. He'd fix Kraft macaroni & cheese (which I detest!) and I'd cry. He'd fix steak (I'm a reborn vegetarian!) and I'd cry. He'd make a smoothie with my new Ninja and not use it for healthy stuff (he made gross Reese Cup flavors) and I'd cry. He was trying to be nice and live on things I hated so I wouldn't miss food as much, but I was still a hot mess! At one point I'm fairly certain I even told him I didn't care if it killed me, I was going to eat a huge spinach salad, then I collapsed in our bed and cried about everything from cheese balls and crackers to my Mama's cornbread dressing! And that was just the food stuff that set me off. I won't even get started on the clothes not fitting, the stall, or worrying about looking old! So take comfort in the fact that you're not alone AND in the fact that it gets better. Oh and remember, this is a safe place to vent!
  9. I wont get my band in until january 18th, but I've been a vegetarian for 17 years (I know, how did i get this big?) I have been looking into low-carb options, too. Google "Eco Atkins diet". Also, I don't know what you can/can't eat with the band yet, but I've been buying the pre-separated egg whites and making scrambled eggs on a non-stick pan with olive oil spray and some seasonings. Beans, nuts, tofu, kale, fat free plain Greek yogurt (as a veggie dip) and cottage cheese, those are some of the things off the top of my head. Let me know what you come up with!

Is It Possible To Be Low Carb And Vegatarian?

My old college roommate was a vegetarian and she tried to restrict her carbs to keep a healthy weight. She was not banded. She ate a lot of morning start products and boca burgers. They are pretty high in protein. She also ate a lot of beans with brown rice. Together they made a digestible protein that separate you don't get. I know rice is not possible for a lot of bandsters though. Hope this helps a little.

    Animal Protein Only?

I am not sure what he means by only eat animal Protein? you are going to need vegetables and other nutrients from food besides animal protein. I would imagine he is saying those who eat animal protein are most successful because unlike Protein shakes, it takes longer to digest and sits longer in your stoma, so you will feel full longer. But unlike vegetarian protein options (tofu, quinoa) animal products have fewer carbs. So i would suggest eating what you like, but definitely try to minimize your carbs. I have had the best luck losing weight when I around 100 g of carbs a day. really no matter the calorie intake for me (I can range from 1,200 to 2,500 in a day and still lose weight if i'm watching my carbs). Also, animal products will have more diverse Proteins, so you will have more of what your body is craving as nutrients satisfied. if you would rather get proteins from peanuts or vegetarian sources, just look at the carbs and account for them in the rest of your food choices, and make sure you are looking up how to get all the essential amino acids in your diet so you don't have hunger from not getting the right nutrients.

    Is It Possible...

It's possible but VERY challenging! Especially in the early stages from everything I've both heard and experienced. I was raised as a vegetarian until the age of 17 when I tried meat for the first time and loved it. Red meat wasn't my thing, but chicken, fish, sausage, etc. When I decided to have the surgery and was told to lose weight, I converted back, allowing myself only seafood. I loved it too much to give it up. I did very well eating my Beans, soy products, etc. Since surgery- most specifically since starting back on puréed foods and on, I haven't been able to get everything I need as far as my Protein. It's been a constant negotiation process with my doctor and nutritionist, so I've started adding canned chicken to my menu. As soon as I can work more things in, I'm going back to all vegetarian though- meat makes me feel OFF! If anyone has any vegetarian recipes or website ideas, please feel free to do the same and I will reciprocate!
  13. You can totally be a successful sleeved vegetarian. Vegan would be a challenge. But if you'll continue dairy and eat Greek yogurt...not to mention there are a ton of vegetarian soy and tofu based Protein sources like morning star farms Breakfast patties, etc. I know a very successful vegetarian sleever. I occasionally have meat aversion. I eat lentils and Beans and tofu. Nom nom nom. Good luck! life is a journey, not a destination; so, stop running -H.D. THEROUX

    Need To Vent

Can't wait to be in your shoes! My husband just wants me to do it the "natural" way... Good old fashion diet and exercise. This man was raised vegetarian and has never had an issue with weight. :/

Any October 23Rd Sleevers Out There?

I was sleeved 10/25 and I'm down about 40+ pounds. I'm officially into the soft foods phase but I'm still struggling with my Protein. Being a "born again" vegetarian has made it more challenging and protein shakes/powders make me ill. If anyone else is on MFP you can find me there as serenity_lynn

    Vegetarian

Tofu and tempeh are great sources of protein. Same for beans and lentils. Some green leafy vegetables can supply iron. I am not vegetarian but I do not eat a lot of meat for health reasons.

    My Fitness Pal

I'm still messing around with the settings but I've had better success since I've personalized the settings. Right now, as a generic setting (until I can double check with my surgeon and nutritionist at my 1 month post-op appointment) I'm at 1,000 calories. My food is all low-fat, sugar-free, vegetarian, and high-protein so I haven't gone so far as to experiment with those specific settings yet. After my follow-up I may try it. However, based on my calorie personalization, I do notice a difference, even if I -am- still getting that "starvation mode" message.

    Need Help,advise.

Thanks everyone for the replys, I'm going to talk with the bariatric nurses this week. I eat around 1 to 1 1/2 cups a meal but I do have snacks in between. This last week I have been staying to protein shakes, unjury broth with noodles, and vegetarian refied beans with cheese (I'm vegetarian so I do have a hard time getting enough protein so I try to have the unjury everday) also evening snack has been the healthy choice frozen yogurt as all of that goes down well, so I'm probably eating to much of it, again I'm hungry I know I have to pay better attention to my bite size as I know I take bigger bites than the size of a fingernail and I tend to eat to fast and mindlessly as I do other things, it's been a lifelong habit that has been hard to break, I always do 5 other things as I eat. Sometimes it takes talking it out and hearing it from someone else to make me think of what I'm doing wrong, So glad this forum exists. Thanks everyone and Happy Thanksgiving.
