Home from the hospital

My full liquid plan consists of creamed Soups with no chucks, broth, Protein shakes, low fat Dannon lite and fit yogurt, low fat cottage cheese. I don't really like the Protein Shakes Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hi Bullit - I hope your port area is feeling better. My port is about 4" under my left boob, seems low to me - I hope it doesn't drift to my thigh as I get thinner! Yes, I also felt weak the 1st two weeks or so - our bodies are in shock, and having hardly any carbs or calories does make you weak, that too gets better as our bodies adjust, adding just a bit of soft foods (tofu, hummus, yogurt) has helped me. Are you drinking your protein? You should try and get at least 60 gms a day. I've been doing pretty good on drinking my water, and you will find as your post op swelling goes down it is easier to swallow, though I think the post op swelling gives us a feel as to what a fill will feel like (?) I know when I go back to work, next week, getting all my water in will be harder to do. I was banded in Mexico (DR. Rumbaut) and have my follow up/fill Dr. Fox, not too far from me in Tacoma. Hang in there - We are doing great!!!

When Did U Feel 100%
Glassfuser replied to TheNewSusie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, sweetie, me too! I am constantly fighting heartburn and I dread eating. I'm almost a month out ( July 9 surgery). Soup is a lifesaver, but it still hurts. I take Rx omeprezole or Prilosec daily and that really helps me at night. Try some frozen Greek yogurt. Helps with the heat and you get more protein. It's new in the ice cream case at the supermarket. Just know that you're not alone in feeling poopy. I don't visit this site too often, but I came here because I'm feeling the same way. I'm afraid almost of eating and I hate that. I really believe we will feel much better soon! Other things to try...a slug of pepto bismal before you eat or drink, hot drinks in the am, and sorbets or icecream sprinkled with tasteless protein powder. Just watch out for killer yeast infections with eating sugary stuff what with your immune system low. Acidophilus milk should help with that a bit, as I had to remind myself yesterday. We're going to be okay. Right now just kinda stinks. I'm afraid this will last forever, but I'm down to 218 from 248 so it helps. And my brain knows it cant last forever. We can do this! -
Finally Made It To Onderland
shakey88 replied to shakey88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am going to be completely honest. In the beginning, I was counting my calories and making sure that I stayed between 1000 and 1200 a day. The last couple weeks I have been lazy about it, but I am still losing. Here are some things I eat. Breakfast During the week (M-F), I have a Protein shake (EAS Carb Control) and some sort of fruit or a Fiber 1 bar. Weekends, I usually have a cup of Koshi Go Lean Cereal with 1/2 cup of skim milk or Weight Control oatmeal lunch This varies...last week, I had turkey and cheese on wheat bread with mustard. This week I am going to have a salad with chicken breast. Sometimes I have Laughing Cow Cheese with 6 reduced fat crackers and a yogurt. I could have yogurt and a string cheese. dinner Some ideas...1/2 of a chicken breast with a cup of veggies, a turkey burger with cheese, chili, Soup, Chicken Parm. I do not deny myself food either. If they have something at work, I eat it. If I dont, I find myself wanting it even more. I just eat an extremely small portion of it. I went to a birthday party for a kid and I had a cup cake. I go to dinner with my friends to the Olive Garden and Applebees. I just watch how much I consume. I drink Water and crystal light and sometimes Diet Snapple. Though I have wanted a Pepsi and I will have it. I do workout almost every day. 35 mins on the Wii. 35-45 mins of resistance training (weights, body ball or resistance band) and 30-45 mins of cardio I hope this is what you wanted. It is working for me, even though I do not follow all the rules. I do not have any Fluid, so I am able to eat basically anything. The PA in my office jokes with me telling me I wasted my money because I am basically doing this myself. I say it is the best $5 I ever spent! -
No, I haven't, but I'm very very tempted - getting really sick of yogurt, protein drinks and milk!

RNs, What are you eating during your shift?
Introversion replied to JDRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I now have a work-from-home desk job these days. However, I worked as an RN house supervisor at a specialty hospital during my first year with the sleeve. I'm two years out and continue to drink protein shakes and eat protein bars. While your surgeon's advice is solid, he doesn't understand the time constraints of floor/unit nursing. When I worked the floor I packed protein bars, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, beef jerky, baked chicken drumsticks, deviled eggs, string cheese, chef's salads, and canned soups. -

First meal of the day
NewBeginning2016 replied to NewBeginning2016's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@Bufflehead As part of my post op, I did Clear Liquids for two weeks. Now I'm on full liquids for two weeks. I'm not counting calories or Protein. I'm allowed to have this carnation Breakfast, skim, fat free or 1%milk, sugar free/ low fat pudding, strained low fat Soups, no sugar added low fat yogurt, sugar free Popsicles, sugar free Jello. thinned grits, oatmeal and cream of rice and wheat, in addition to the broth and other stuff from the clear liquid diet. I am allowed to add Protein Powder to my milk and I know it's ok to add it to yogurt. I don't necessarily call it a Protein shake tho lol. It's just adding a scoop of protein powder to get in more protein. So I don't feel like I'm not in compliance. Just happened to add it to this carnation meal of that makes sense lol. I sip Water all day and can eat some Soup, sugar free jello and sugar free Popsicles the rest of the day. Trying to get in more protein where I can add it and have it be bearable to eat too. Just checking in as I started my Pre-op diet yesterday and my surgery is scheduled for 4/29. Yesterday was rough!!! I bought the protein shakes at Costco and they do taste very good. They have 160 calories, 30 grams of protein and 1g of sugar. I drink 4 a day and then I can have soup broth, jello, Fat Free yogurt and sugar free popsicles. I also can have a cup of Fat Free Milk once a day and 4 oz of juice once a day. I ended up with a wicked headache last night and took tylenol and went right to bed. Today I've been better. It has it's up's and down's but I know that I can do this. I'm definitely very ready for this and I'm looking forward to being healthy. If anyone else is on their pre-op diet please share how you're doing!

How to get solid protein down after 3 months post op
BonsW posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Duodenal Switch, 3 Months Post Op. Never hungry. Need to get in 90 grams of protein. Can't seem to do it. After a few bits, feel nauseous and don't want to eat anymore. Tried different protein shakes, also hard to get down. My best friends are the so called "slippery" foods, yogurt, yogurt, yogurt and cottage cheese. Help! How can I get solid protein down? -
I’m a week out from surgery and yes I’m hungry. I had the lapband for 10 years and never once felt hungry. I am still weak feeling. I’m now eating protein shakes, broths, jello, Greek yogurt and I added a scrambled egg. The egg did help. I did read that when you don’t get enough protein you will be hungry. I can’t eat more than I am.

Does protein actually HELP you lose weight?
buplee replied to cmathews77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I usually have one Greek yogurt a day which usually has 13-15gms of protein with a few almonds. I looked at almond milk but at 7gms of protein it didn't meet my protein needs. -
During the work week: 7am: Protein latte 10am: Greek yogurt/eggs/ or berries/nuts 1pm: lunch - usually out and will be either chicken or fish with salad or veg 4pm: Some nuts/fruit or a protein bar/avocado/baby bel/eggs or the like 8pm: Chicken/fish/pork with veg The Snacks are based on what I am doing work wise so can change. At the weekends I tend to just eat 3 meals and one snack and my meals are spread out more. Kate

Pre-Op Diet - Dr. Collier
toniteach replied to jennyl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jenny, Did you get the answers to your questions about your pre-op diet? You should've gotten some written instructions from the nurse. What flavor AmazeRX did you choose? I love the vanilla and the Mocha Zap. I'm on my 4th container already! Cha-Ching!!!!! I still love to drink my Protein shakes post-banding. This is what I have about the pre-op diet: Breakfast: I serving of 2 of the following: yogurt, fruit, Cereal, toast, bagels, waffles, muffins, eggs or oatmeal. (I stuck to oatmeat, coffee, and yogurt---but I was only on the diet for a week....long story!) lunch: AmazeRX shake dinner: 1 serving lean meat, one serving veggie (have some skinless chicken and a veg of your choice, or a pork steak, or a fish filet, etc....) Go to Pappasitos and have a fajita without the tortilla and cheese/sour cream. You get the gist.... Night-time Snack: AmazeRX shake ....and because you are STARVING on this diet, you can supplement between meals with salad all you want....just choose fat-free/low calorie dressing. My Girlfriend has that book you mentioned and loved it. I couldn't find it at Barnes and Noble or Borders, but heard it was better to read pre-op anyway!!! I just saw Dr. Collier yesterday....he was wooooonderful and really gave me a kick in the pants for not exercising like I should be! I think he's such a fantastic surgeon and doctor---so kind, competent and caring. His office staff is great too, just give them a chance and get to know them!!!! Let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers, Toni -
Hi all! I'm at day 17 post-op... I am able to have about 1/4 cup of broth, around 3 oz's of Jello, pudding or mashed potatoes at my meal time... I have a horrible time getting down my liquids or Protein shakes( maybe 32oz's a day). I also tried yogurt and cottage cheese only about 2-3oz's of those as there consitancy is a little thicker. I know I'm full when I feel it sitting in my chest! It doesn't feel very good and I have been walking daily! My 2 week post-op the other day I was down 17lbs so I was happy to know this must be working... Everyone is different and I know it is going to be a journey for us all but this forum is a great tool to have at our finger tips. Good luck to us all

What's "Typical" in this New Atypical Life?
orionburn replied to Taylor5's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know it's hard to resist counting calories, but honestly in the early days don't stress about it. I did my journals to track protein as usual. First couple of weeks I was probably around 600 a day. That's all I could manage. Mainly stuck to yogurts, protein shakes, and the early soft foods allowed on my plan. If you're info is accurate it looks like you're only about a week out from sugery? Seriously that's way to early to be stressing about the weight coming off. Getting healed up is priority #1. The weight will come off. Your body has been through a helluva a lot so be patient with it. You're also at a bit lower weight than a lot of others. It's just the nature of the beast. It always seems that weight comes off quicker in the beginning for those that weigh more. Focus on the basics right now. Don't think of your walks as exercise to lose weight. It's to get you up and moving and help the healing process. You got all the time in the world coming up to fine tune your diet and exercise program. I had complications after surgery which made for a very long 2 weeks after surgery. Don't push yourself too hard because it isn't worth risking any setbacks. In time you'll get your calories up, and you're right that you will need to. If they're too low your body will resist wanting to shed weight. I hit a stall for about a week or two in the early months and found that actually increasing my calories helped get the weight coming off again. That being said we're all different. Keep doing a food journal because that will give you something to go back and look at and help figure out what is and isn't working for you. In a few weeks you'll have a lot more options and you'll be feeling way better. The time right after surgery is tough physically as well as mentally. The mental part is what a lot of us weren't fully prepared for. Give it some time and it will all be good! -
sorry, no giving up allowed, lol. I talked to my NUT last night and he suggested trying some soft Proteins . . . A Protein shake made with milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans. You might try some of those and see if they help.

November sleevers! 6 weeks out and feeling discouraged!
jkkoutso replied to Alisa11/18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for answering back. I have only been walking on the treadmill. I feel weak and want to start machines for some strength again. Im glad im not the only one who cant eat a cup of yogurt. The doctors pushed me to eat pureed foods earlier then recommend bc I was losing weight to fast. Anyone have any suggestions on how to increase liquids im lucky if I can consume 30 ounces. Yesterday was only 22 -
I've started having a Protein coffee or chai latte every morning. I have a low carb Protein powder (IsoFlex vanilla - half a gram of carbs per scoop) and I take two scoops and mix it with half a cup of lowfat milk. Then I brew either a cup of coffee or a cup of chai tea and mix them together. Sometimes I pour the mixture over ice, sometimes I don't. With the milk and protein I use, this is about 282 calories, 8 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat and 60 grams of protein. If I have calories to spare or if I just plain feel like it, I'll add a Tbs. of french vanilla coffee creamer for a bit more vanilla boost. If I wanted to have less calories I'd only use one scoop of protein, which would make it 171 calories, 8 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat and 33 grams of protein. This helps boost my calories and the carbs are low enough that I still stay within my personal goals for the day. If I don't start my day with this Protein Drink, I have trouble hitting even 500 calories for the day. I still have no desire to eat, and I still only eat miniscule portions. I find myself getting "stopped up" very frequently with any type of meat unless it's (disgustingly) coated with gravy, so I find myself gravitating to "easy" sources of protein like cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt and protein powders. Good luck, La. You're doing great on the weight loss, by the way! ~Cheri

Well, it's two days after my surgery. I feel better today than I did yesterday that's for sure. The gas pain was the worst yesterday I think. Not so bad today. I have one dose of my pain killer (lortab) left and I don't think I will take it anymore after its gone. The heating pad has been an awesome thing to have. Haven't really had much desire to "eat" anything, I have only had two small shakes and a half cup of yogurt since surgery. I almost wanted to gag trying to eat the yogurt, but I am trying to keep up the Protein. I have been doing some light chores around the house, and went to the store and walked around a bit, trying to be up and moving to get rid of this gas pain which I think is the worst part so far. I am able to remove the dressings today for a shower! Pretty excited about that. Haven't really been nauseous thankfully. Just gassy sore and the port incision is pretty tender. I'm sure tomorrow will be even better yet! I am a side sleeper, so sleeping on my back hasn't been real fun, but I'm hoping to be able to get back to normal there in a couple weeks. Husband has been SUPER AWESOME and I am blessed to have him to help. If anybody wants to keep in touch e-mail wise or anything I would be more than happy! Blessings to all!

I had surgery done on 4/14/15 it has been 6 days I want to eat everything, i feel like I'm starving. Day 1 I had only water and ice chips day 2,3&4 I had water and protein shakes, day 5 I had a little bit of Greek yogurt with some chocolate protein powder mixed in it (approx. 2oz) and some chicken broth, not at the same time, but during the day, day 6 I had 1 apple sauce no sugar added organic. 3.5 oz. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to have these things in my first week but I feel great. Keeping all fluid down and incisions are healing good. My information pack I got to refer to after surgery says I can have things that can slip through a funnel. I'm hoping what I'm doing is ok. I've tried calling my Drs office to ask but the time difference between where I had the procedure and where I live is a problem. ( I went to another state to do my sleeve). Someone please let me know if what I'm doing is DANGEROUS.
