Meal replacement suggestions for breakfast
FluffyChix replied to Ready2slimdown's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
What stage are you at now? I see you had surgery on 1.14.20? Can you give us a little more information? There are lots of ways to "cut" protein drinks to adjust their sweetness. My favorites are: Cut RTD protein drinks with decaff coffee or decaff tea. (Great both hot and on ice and blended into frappaccinos!) Cut RTD protein drinks with fat free milk or nut milks. I like high protein Fairlife or Mootopia fat free. Cut RTD protein drinks with nonfat, plain kefir. Cut RTD protein drinks with nonfat, plain Greek yogurt. Cut RTD protein drinks with nonfat, plain Greek yogurt + 2% cottage cheese to make a "protein soup". Add sf Walden Farms Blueberry or Strawberry Pancake Syrup (it's even better if you add 6g Vitacost Peanut Butter Slim Powdered Peanut Butter--tastes like PB&J without the bread). Make custards with RTD + Add a scoop of favorite flavored protein powder to Greek yogurt and stir well--tastes like pudding. Love Isopure Bananas & Cream this way! Add a half scoop of unflavored protein to a bit of cold broth to make a paste. Slowly add more cold broth until it's the thickness you prefer. Slowly heat but know protein clumps at temps over 145º. You can do this same thing to cream soups like strained cream of chicken. Add a tablespoon of unflavored protein to anything like refried beans, smashed roasted cauliflower, alfredo sauces for zoodles or over well-cooked green beans. Add a tablespoon of unflavored protein to a quick "Thanksgiving Green Bean Casserole with Canned Chicken" for soft food stage. So dang good! -

Ya the protein shakes have been hard for me. Greek yogurt goes down easy. Try those protein isolate drinks that are more like juice. Isopure and syntax nectar. Those have been going to easy for me. -

Hello! I had my RNYGB Feb. 13. I am progressing well. My little incisions are healed. I am having a hard time with the taste if anything sweet. Ugh. Also getting my vitamins down without gagging is a challenge. For some reason the protein powder is a challenge so I have been getting most of my protein with the special milks and Greek yogurt smoothies. I also found pureeing légume soups worked great for me, though I am getting tired of them. I am down 30 lbs today since January 29, and am freezing all the time, especially my hands and feet. I sleep with fuzzy socks now! Lol -
Day 4, things seem so easy, now I'm worried
biginjapan replied to Katheryn0303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Another March3rd-er (?) having an easy time of it. Since day 1 post op they given me vitamin water and a small yogurt drink to take in addition to water, and yesterday (day 3), I had some cottage cheese (considered a purée here - OMG in Estonia they must love it because the dairy case seems to have more cottage cheese options than yogurt ones), and baby food (the kind that come in the squeezable soft packs). It’s weird to me that both of these foods (in addition to other purées) were recommended to me, since that wasn’t the case when I had my first surgery in Mexico. In any event, since I’m living out of a hotel until next week I don’t have a lot of options food wise. Long story short, I’m doing well getting my liquids in, ok with the protein, and the purées didn’t cause any issues. If I hadn’t gone through this before, I’d be worried, but as it is I’m feeling great. The first time I did this (sleeve in 2017j, I was the only one in the hospital with little to no pain, was walking around at least 4 hours a day, and I actually accused my surgeon of not having done the surgery despite the scars and drainage tube coming out of my body. She told me that some people are just lucky, they go through surgery and the post op period without any problems and that I should be thankful for it. She even showed me a picture of my excised stomach to prove it. My current surgeon told me that he did check out my sleeve before he made it even smaller for the RNY and told me it was perfect, so whatever doubts I had in my mind for the past three years were put to rest. The one thing I do know is that transitioning to soft or mushy foods will be, not necessarily problematic, but that we’ll feel it more. That’s why I’m focusing on maintaining good habits (weigh or measure food, no drinking 30 min before and after any food), since I think that’s one of the main reasons my sleeve failed the first time. -
Hey Mooki, Yes, a surgery twin. How are you feeling? What's your stages for nutrition? I'm on clear liquids until Saturday, Full liquids on Sunday until the 16th and puree on the 17th. My full liquids phase does include cream soups, greek yogurt unsweetened, sugar free pudding, extra thin cream of wheat and all of the clear liquid foods. I'm missing a few items, but you get the concept. I reached half of my hydration/protein goals yesterday. Sipping fluids is a full time job. I'm also utilizing the samples I received from the Obesity Help Conference last October. Unjury has a liquid Chicken Soup with 21 grams of protein and 8 ozs of hot water needed , not to be heated over 140° . Fluids, protein and it taste like cream of chicken soup without the creamy consistency. I appreciate the smell and taste, I would love a cracker with the soup. Lol, but seriously ; I probably only want stuff just because I'm not allowed. We're going to be fine. AJ knows stuff, like soup recipes and etc. I also appreciate that everyone has their own experiences and approach to winning the game against obesity. This is not a one size fits all solution.

I don't know if this helps you @Danny Paul but I almost always will just eat protein heavy meals in the PM. I eat the bulk of the carbs im going to have early in the day when i may need the boost of energy I don't try to eat nuts fruit vegetables etc just something with protein. Like yogurt, Halo top or a piece of a protein bar (that I like) if I'm hungry at night. *Also (a harder job) you may need to break the pattern of Classical Conditioning (Pavlov- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Pavlov) of associating food and entertainment (eating & TV) Good Luck ❤

Carbs....and how much
Nonnaof4 replied to Nonnaof4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish I could get that many veggies in. Luckily I haven't found any that don't agree with me. I really need to step up my veggie game. I do eat a lot of broccoli which is my favorite. I'm just curious on your stuff from lunch yesterday. Are you having just a dab of yogurt? I'm guessing you're using it to make some kind of dip or dressing for the veggies? My NUT wants me to try and get as close to 20g protein at each meal. That doesn't leave a lot of room for veggies. I'm still relying on a protein shake most days as well. I use it for breakfast as its an easy grab and go. -
Carbs....and how much
FluffyChix replied to Nonnaof4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's me most days. I get over 1lb of veggies per day usually. I keep it to 50g total or about 30g net most days. Here's what I've had so far and dinner will likely be cauliflower and broccoli roasted and maybe a small salad plus baked fish. Oh and I had an ounce of grape tomatoes with mid morning snack. I will probably have a bedtime snack of either a salad or veggies with yogurt Ranch. This was me yesterday: -

Tomorrow is the day!!
biginjapan replied to Katheryn0303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I’m just about to go to bed after my first full day post op. Feeling a bit tender and uncomfortable but drank a full litre of water plus some liquid yogurt drink. Walked about 5000 very slow steps around the hallways. Hopefully tomorrow will be even better. -
with bypass, there's also the ending of malabsorption around the year 2 mark. also, once you gain weight it is REALLY tough to take it off, even after you return to your pre-gain habits. The difference between maintaining a weight of 140 vs a weight of 150 is about 50 calories a day. Which is like - a peach. Or half a Light & Fit yogurt. So if you do some heavy eating over the holidays and gain five pounds, you really have to go on a strict diet rather than just revert to the way you were eating before you gained the five pounds. Else at a 50-calorie deficit a day, it would take you 70 days to lose one pound. So almost a year to lose five pounds. The trick is to pretty much never let yourself gain weight. Yes - there are people who manage to defend their lowest weight, but an awful lot of us have "bounce back" weight... (it didn't seem to work this way when I weighed almost 400 lbs, but boy, it sure does now...) p.s. you are talking 15-20-30-40 lbs. I would say those last two numbers definitely ARE due to not being vigilant. But it is SUPER common to have a 10-20 lb bounce back after hitting your lowest weight. There are people who don't, but they seem to be in the minority.

Yesterday Tuesday, March 3 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr4mths PO Sleeve / 114.9 lbs ---------------------------------------- Bought a tub of mascarpone with the intention of making a peach pastry dish I had my eye on for a while, but me and the fam ended up just eating the batch of whipped-cream-mascarpone filling I made from the bowl all day (and night) long...it was sooooooo yum. Now I gotta go buy another tub (and this time I won't make the filling until AFTER the pastry is ready!) Also, I know I'm not totally healed yet, but I added a twice-around-the-block verrrrryyyy sllooooooooow run (a little over 1km) to my walk last night, and I didn't split anything open! Yay! I was all set and ready to go out again this AM for a longer, faster one, but Mr. convinced me otherwise. Boo . We did some squats instead. DS Post Op - Did you need help from anyone?
Postop replied to Rose57's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
@Rose57I had the traditional DS almost 15 years ago and the answer is yes regarding help. I had my mother stay for about a week. I was too tired and weak to do much. She made my meals (which was a tsp. of scrambled egg for breakfast 😁), kept track of what pills I started on and crushed some into a tsp. of yogurt as I recall. She also pushed me to get up and walk outside several times a day. I needed her to clean myself as well. -

PLEASE HELP the skeptic in me. Doesn't starving = eventual weight gain??
AZhiker replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am NEVER hungry. I feel stuffed all the time. I eat a lot of plant based foods which are very filling and very nutritious. I never feel deprived. I would never have "the will to eat so little...forever." You don't have to! It's all about what kind of foods you eat. Honestly, I wake up and get on the scale every morning, just knowing I must have gained weight, since I ate so much the day before, but the gain doesn't happen. For example, today I have already eaten a bowl of cooked grain cereal, with milk, raisins, gogi berries, and a sliced apple. Then I had at 1 1/2 cup of shepherd's pie for lunch, an orange, a kiwi, grapes, and a cup of cooked greens. Then two cups of raw veggies for munchies in the afternoon. (Red cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, red and greed pepper, radishes). Then a rice cake with peanut butter, and some nuts. That is BEFORE dinner. For dinner I will have a plate of General Tso's tofu over rice and stir fry vegetables. Later I will have popcorn and yogurt with berries, seeds, and granola. Does that sound like a little? It sure doesn't feel like it. I am eating better than I have in my entire life, and feeling great with 110 pounds gone. -
Thanks so much for your message. Yes, my daughter had it done a year ago and she said that she went through the same thing.....really slow loss at first. I know what you mean about sinking your teeth into some real food. I see ads on TV for burgers and such and it's so appealing. I honestly think I could eat something like that but I'm sure not going to try yet Off to the yogurt!!

How to lose weight pre-op?
AJ Tylo replied to BigSue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not hard but wont be fun I am doing this for my x wife as we speak she is getting it done end of May Since i have a nurta girl who handles me here is her plan Gallons of Broth, she has a band on he wrist and has to move 5 miles a day, Lucky she hits that easy at work, She eats small portion and low calorie food 6 times a day. For example today she will be eating chunked chicken, veggies two shakes and grapes. But she can sip and drink broth all day. She hates it and is miserable but she realizes the rewards seeing me. Going to prep her food today for the next three days here is it for dinner and lunch - Breakfast for her is a yogurt and shake. I will make two of each and she can mix and match them up - Goal is to keep her under 900 calories a day. Not easy because she cheats at work. and If tired blows the day with the Starbucks drive thru suicide coffee creations. 1. 7 oz salmon cauliflower rice and grapes 2. 7 oz skirt steak Avocado and asparagus and fruit cup 3. Chicken sausage one link, Brown fried rice with egg and tons of veggies I am professional trained in the kitchen - Use a App to track your calories and be careful with the sauces, seasonings and oils. You can have a healthy piece of fish and ruin the healthy side with a glaze or sauce! -
Dec 31st surgeries - how are you doing 2 months out?
Supervixen116 replied to loridee11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi surgery twins! Down 26 lbs. and feeling great! Just cleaned out my closet last night, and as I was trying things on, I couldn't believe how large and baggy things were looking on me! I'm down two sizes, so now I'm not trying to hide under my clothes. It's so weird to me! I'm still trying to figure out my routine of food. I start with coffee with protein shake as my creamer and add a scoop of collagen protein. The bat wings on my arms are getting noticeable, but I was expecting that because I'm 49 and I have no illusions about my lack of elasticity. I do a piece of cheese or yogurt for morning snack. A green drink (veggies only) with more protein powder for lunch. Afternoon snack is the rest of my protein shake, then dinner is chicken, fish, meatballs, or a sausage. In between all of that is water. I had some bread a couple of weeks ago, and my stomach got super grumbly. This week, I'm going to switch out the juice on a few days for some salads. I've had a little beer (stout only) and a little wine, but I don't feel I need it like I used to pre-op. I had a small piece of pizza last night for the first time, but only got through a few bites. I used to have pizza every Friday night, but like so many other things, I don't miss it and don't care if I ever have it again. Also super weird to me that I feel that way! I'll admit that I wish I was losing more than 1-2 lbs. a week, but I also haven't been this size in a VERY long time! I keep telling myself that slow and steady wins the race! I'm walking 1.5 miles every day. I belong to a gym, but haven't been in years. That's my next big "add" to my routine. Although, I might quit the gym and start going to yoga. I'm looking for strength/core building, and I like yoga way better than germy machines! I was cold all of the time for the first six weeks, but that seems to be subsiding. Three weeks ago, my face started breaking out with tiny whiteheads, which has never happened before. My energy is good at the beginning of the week, but fades by Friday. Keep on truckin', everyone! -
if you're OK taking tablets, there's always generic brands of calcium citrate. Walgreens and CVS both have them - other places probably do as well. I do the Bariatric Advantage chews occasionally - but I also take tablets. I get the mini-tabs at CVS since the big ones are....big. another option is Upcal-D. It's a powder that I occasionally mix with yogurt (supposedly you can mix it with beverages, too, but it doesn't dissolve that well, so I quit doing it that way)

Try not to worry, you are on the right path and trying to see so far ahead only hurts you, just look at the moment you are in- the here and now. I live with lifelong chronic illness, disability, metabolic disorders, I cannot exercise. I’m 5’ and I started off at 208lbs BMI 40.6 - I had my surgery on April 29th 2019. Today I am 112.6lbs I’m strict with my calories, low carb, little sugar except occasional piece of banana in my yogurt. The experience varies for each person. People who regain are those who don’t follow the lifestyle. They see it as a miracle fix rather than what it is, a tool. Or they see it as a temporary diet rather than a way of life. stick to the program, hydration, protein, low carb, less than 4 or 5 grams sugar in a meal or protein drink. Keep a daily log of weight food, calories and protein and that can help. Do things until they become second nature. learn tips ahead of surgery to help with the harder days. like clear liquids: bone broth, premier protein tropical punch clear protein drinks, outshine sugar free fruit pops, Yogi teas, etc. BariatricPal store has great protein shots perfect for post op. there is a lot of support here. Try not to let others opinions of surgery sway your decision to do what is best for you. I know it is hard. I struggle with similar things. I’m on the Autism spectrum. My body image has always been a big thing as long as I can remember. But I knew this was my last chance do this or give up. Because no matter how much I fought I couldn’t do it on my own anymore. I also lost my ability to taste food and my sense of smell skewed. Never had sense of hungry or full so ate meals because if I didn’t my stomach would bloat and I’d feel ill. Surgery helped I am good with small portions now and can do the low calories, low carb, my body needed to lose weight. im not very good at this but I wish you all the best on your journey. Don’t give up. You can do it. -
I often have a something like heartburn. No, not reflux, just mild heartburn. I've found a teaspoon of yogurt and it goes away. My nutritionist says that's not unusual.
