Are you a vegetarian? This may be a culprit due to the high carb intake you would have. -

Any Sleeved Vegetarians Or Vegans
theshrinkingchef replied to deedeemuffin's topic in Food and Nutrition
A lot of veggie protein(morning star and boca) have wheat gluten in them, so you have to be careful, especially if you have an intolerance. like me! I eat a mostly vegetarian diet. Have you heard of complete proteins? I just learned about them in culinary school. Like beans and rice, hummus and pitas. Those pairings are considered complete proteins, providing your body with all of your essential aminos. Greek yogurt is high in protein and also provides you with good bacteria for healthy digestion. Check out complementary proteins. I'm not a vegetarian, but out of necessity I have eliminated most meats from my diet. You can have a healthy lifestyle eating meat( red meat in moderation), but i would suggest free range, grass fed organic meats. I drink raw milk. Just milked from the cow. It's not pastuerized or homogenized. It's illegal in most states, so you must own dairy cows in order to get it. If it's possible, consider a herdshare. We lose so may nutrients from store bought milk, which is why they're added back in. It's not for everyone. It's an aquired taste, but I grew up on farm fresh milk. Anyway before I go all activist on you, I just wanted to say that you can get your protein from other sources in food. -
I'm not advocating nor am I doctor. I do eat a meat free diet. Some goat cheese. I am trying a new life style of eating. Which does consist of raw veges and fresh fruit. Plenty of Water. Absolutly no processed foods in my house. Which I believe caused me to stall constantly and have a sluggish feeling. I was exercising like a mad woman to no avail with the scale moving. I decided since nothing was working for me I needed to try another approach. I researched the hell out of the benefits of vegan and or vegetarian lifestyles. I decided I could try and possibly acheive a better, healthier me. And I did. I have been meat free for two months. And I am so glad I did this. I did this for me. Not my friends or family. For me. What works for one may not work for others. Everyone will find what does and will do excellent with it. I wish everyone nothing but the best! Deb

Is this normal? Getting nervous...
deedeemuffin replied to deedeemuffin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, I didn't get a maximum yet. I am going to see the nutritionist today. Technically I wasn't supposed to transition to soft foods before I met with her, but I have been so hungry. Real hunger. Not head hunger. I have a very hard time being hungry. I always have. One of the reasons that I chose VSG was to eliminate or significantly reduce that feeling. Unfortunately, that's not what I got. I understand your concern about the mayo salads. I am a vegetarian & there's not many ways for me to get in Protein right now. I make my own egg salad. I'll boil up a half dozen eggs & use just enough low fat or light mayo to make it moist. (About 1 tbsp. for 6 eggs). So, not too bad I think, but I hear what you're saying. Thanks for the feedback. -
Is this normal? Getting nervous...
deedeemuffin posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not even 3 weeks out. Today I ate 1/2 CUP of egg salad & a whole cup each of vegetarian chili & also cottage cheese. That is on top of having a protein shake this morning. I also had 48 oz. of water. I only eat when I feel hungry, eat slowly & stop when I start to feel full. This seems like A LOT more food than I was told that I would be able to eat. I've had no problem getting it down or keeping it down. Is this at all normal? I'm really starting to get nervous. -

need advice/suggestions...don't know what's wrong
deedeemuffin replied to haragl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish that I could help you, but I am only 2 1/2 weeks post-op myself. What peaked my interest is that you're a vegetarian. I gave up meat before surgery, and I was wondering what you eat post-op? It would be really helpful to me. Thanks! -
need advice/suggestions...don't know what's wrong
haragl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 9/24 and have been doing well post-op. I was 337 pre-op and was down 14 lbs to 323 on day of surgery. My 2 week post op visit I was down to 314. Here starts the problem. On my next visit about 2 1/2 weeks later I was 314 and on my appointment today, 2 1/2 months post op I am 314. I am working our 45 mins to 1 hour per day--I do 30-40 minutes of cardio and 15-20 mins of weights alternating upper and lower body. I am drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day and doing 70 grams of protein. I am a vegetarian so it is sometimes hard to get protein but I am doing it. I am so depressed and upset about this issue. I would appreciate any help-suggestions--magic spells-whatever. I just can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I am burning between 350-450 calories per workout--should I be replacing those burned calories and getting a net of 1000 or should I just do 1000 gross? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -
Actually, what's meant by proteins once you are on solid foods is SOLID proteins. For instance, Greek yogurt is a good snack between meals; however, during mealtime you should focus on solid proteins as those will keep you fuller longer (per my nutritionist). Some people think having a protein drink can replace having a meal. I know some people feel "tight" in the a.m. and prefer this as their morning "meal". I think if that works for them, it's great. You wouldn't want to do that for every meal thought. To really stay fuller longer, eggs, cheese, etc will keep you fuller and satiated longer. Since you mention being vegetarian (mostly), have you tried quinoa? It is packed with nutrients and protein. I have a recipe that my family loves made with vegetable broth, black beans, cilantro, etc. Just another thought....

Oh, I am working with a nutritionist and she's very helpful. Like I said further up, I eat eggs, cheese, nuts etc. for my proteins -- and occasionally fish. That key lime yogurt sounds like something I could get into too! My question was more for educational reasons, so many people have said that I need to get more protein in, and I was trying to figure out if we actually meant protein or solids. I think we mean solids when we say proteins, as there seem to be all sorts of slider mushies that can also technically be called protein. In any event, I do think I need to try and find more of these (solids) and that can be a challenge as a vegetarian. I used to get all my protein from veggie sources, but that involved eating huge amounts of food on a regular basis. I think that is why I am having so much trouble with portions too. Sigh. I WILL get this

Oh I am doing the protein thing okay, though its harder for a vegetarian. I eat a lot of beans and legumes, cheese, eggs etc. My problem is not what I eat, it's how I feel an hour later lol. (Hungry and watching the clock to see if the next meal is any closer)! I haven't lost any more weight going back to real food, but I haven't gained (yet) either. Christmas has me worried though, all that good food and all that time off!

I know this has been asked here before, but it's hard sometimes to figure out what a thread is about by the title. As you've likely guessed, I am in that in between state. I had my first fill last week, but I don't feel any difference at all. I have 3.5 cc in a 10cc band. I am only five weeks post op, so I am not expecting miracles either I do miss the still-swollen restriction though - I lost 6 pounds in the first month and then bam! You can eat solids again! Now its a daily struggle to stay at that 1000 to 1200 calorie mark each day. I get hungry about an hour after I eat what feels like itty bitty meals lol. I have pretty good eating habits, low fat mostly, vegetarian, whole grain etc. But I am a volume eater and always have been. Too much good for you food is still too much! So, how many fills did it take for each of you? I need inspiration here. At what point did you go, oh hey, I see how this thing works! Christmas has me worried................................

Do a search. I've seen various threads on this topic and post from several vegetarian sleevers. I'm pre-op but I've read there are vegetarian protein supplements like Vega. I've read that most eat tofu and beans for protein. I think it can be done, just maybe not as low carb as so many sleevers on here follow.

Vegetarian diet - is this impossible post-OP
chaya posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Need advice from vegetarian or mostly vegetarian sleevers out there. I met with the Dr yesterday and he said that I should research vegetarian diet compatibility with VSG. liquid Protein is fine for the first 4 weeks but he feels a SOLID protein like a bite of chicken that will basically sit in your post-Op stomach for a long time is what helps people feel full and not overeat. Vegetarian substitutes like Beans or tofu or seitan apparently just get processed by the stomach acids and move into the intestines fast.. Making you feel hungry again. I am mostly vegetarian. I eat eggs, dairy etc. Will occasionally eat chicken or fish in restaurants but I do not cook meat at home. For the weight loss phase when I am losing weight, I am willing to do what it takes to get the protein in but I would prefer longer term diet to be mostly plant based. Is this unrealistic with the sleeve? -
I just posted this elsewhere. Sorry for the repetition. Besides scrambled eggs I had poached, soft boiled, hard boiled, over easy, sunny side up, deviled, essentially any way I could cook an egg I could have it. In addition, I could have mild steamed or poached fish; canned or packet tuna, salmon and chicken plain or as salad with lowfat mayo; vegetarian soy products; cooked Cereal thinned with skim milk; nonfat refried beans; nonfat yogurt without added sugar; low salt V-8 juice; unsweetened apple sauce; mashed ripe banana; skim or lowfat cottage or ricotta cheese; mashed squash, white potato, sweet potato. These were all considered a good consistency so none of it had to be pureed.

I think that as we get the protein/fluid intake more in balance, our bodies will release the weight. It seems to take a long time to get the protein/fluid intake levels to what they should be. I do find that every day I am able to increase the amount of fluids and proteins. Here are some high-protein ideas I am using: (1) obviously protein shakes, such as Boost (2) Progresso's vegetarian, low-fat lentil soup: pureed. At first I had to dilute the puree with water but now I don't. This is very high protein and I find it easy to get down. You can mix in some protein powder to increase the protein. Adding some chicken broth can enhance the flavor. It took me 1.5 days to finish a can offering two servings! (3) unsweetened soy milk - it seems to offer 1 gram of protein for every ounce of fluid. 8 ounces = 8 grams of protein. Plus it's liquid. There are some other Progresso soups that are high in protein. The advantage of the lentil soup is that it is low in terms of sugar grams. Some of the high-protein Progresso soups have more sugar grams. So I'm sticking mainly to the lentil soup. Does anyone know of any other Progresso soups that are high protein but low in sugar grams? I've found that exactly 7 days after surgery, I have lost exactly 7 pounds - a pound a day. I am happy with that weight loss. I remain bloated. My abdomen is very bruised. But each day I feel a bit better. Wishing everyone success. -
I am only a week post-op, but I had given up meat long before surgery. I had been seriously considering giving up milk products too. Are there any successful sleeved veggies out there? What is your food approach?

Starting To Hate Chicken... Already :-(
ChicagoRose replied to BandedBettyBoop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly, chicken is my least favorite protien!! I am by no means a vegetarian, but I plan on sticking with soft and moist fish after my surgery, soft boiled eggs, etc. Good luck, just think that it sucks for you but others are ANXIOUS to get there!! Good luck =) -
Opps forgot to suggest meals...sexy shrimp scampi is a good one and can be found on the internet. the campbells website has good chicken and Soup recipes. Chili is good. Pasta e fagoli with ground beef is good. I added the with ground beef because many pasta e fagoli recipes are vegetarian.

Am I A Candidate For Vsg - Brutal Honest Feedback Needed
Caroline G replied to chaya's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I am a vegetarian too (although I do eat seafood in addition to dairy and eggs). I am pre-op now with surgery 12/11 but my nutritionist has had me cutting back carbs A LOT and upping my Protein. I have been doing okay although I was a big carb eater before. There is a vegetarian board on here that may be helpful for you. It all depends on whether you feel okay with lower carbs and keeping up your protein. You can do it by protein shakes too. It looks like your bmi is 35 but with the diabetes and cholesterol, I think you should qualify (and maybe even with just one. I think some insurances will do it with just one.) I would suggest going to a seminar and seeing the surgeon now before losing any more weight so your current bmi on record for them to go by. I saw two different surgeons and they both said they go with the first weight so as I worked on losing some weight, they would still go by the higher one because now I would be just below. Plus, the pre-op testing can take several months so it will give you time to do some research. And you can also tell them you don't want to do it or want to hold off for a while. You will also get a lot of information about the surgery from the seminar which might help you decide. And reading and posting on these boards along the way should help too. Good luck! Caroline
