That's what I do, plus I add about 8 oz of water to the shot. I take all my mornings meds and vitamins with the protein as well. It takes me forever to get it all in. If I take my medications too fast it upset my stomach. "She" is very temperamental in the morning.

I never felt great after breakfast either. For years I didn’t eat it then thought I ‘should’ as I usually missed lunch so I’d eat it around 6am because I started work early. But since my surgery, & not working anymore, I discovered I’m better having breakfast later in the morning - about 9am. If I have it before 8am it seems to just sit there, my tummy grumbles & gurgles more & I feel sort of blah. I find the things we discover about ourselves since the surgery so interesting. It seems the protein content in the shots is the whey protein content so 25g whey protein is 25g of complete protein you can count. They must not include the amount of collagen in the shots as it can’t be counted for our goals. Maybe just sip the shot for longer & more like a drink. It may be easier on your tummy in the morning & would lengthen the time frame in which you’re consuming the protein???

Westchester NY Hospital/Doctor Recommendation
PKM posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm a newcomer to this community, and I could really use your assistance. Can you kindly suggest a reputable hospital or a skilled doctor in Westchester, NY, who specializes in Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)? I've been researching a bit and stumbled upon endoscopic suturing of the stomach as an option. Has anyone here undergone this procedure, and if so, would you be willing to share your experience and insights regarding its effectiveness? Your guidance and personal experiences would mean a lot to me. Thank you in advance! -

Already discouraged. I had bypass on 9/26/23 and even after 10 days of nothing but fluids and now on pureed and barely eating a teaspoon of each food allowed (LF cottage cheese, LF no sugar added yogurt, mashed potatoes) 3x/day and getting through my 4oz protein shake 3x day... I've only lost 7 pounds. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Annoyed, and disappointed in myself. -
I knew about the collagen, that's why I added more whey to this drink. Between the protein shot, which is collagen and whey, and the whey I add it's a total of about 39g. The company won't give me the exact breakdown of its product, so i'm not 100% collagen vs. whey. I know there is at least 14g of whey that i add. I just want to make sure that what I drink for breakfast is all absorb. Otherwise, I will need to break it up. I don't like to actually eat breakfast, it messes with my stomach. All my meals contain protein 😉

4 week Post-op feeling down
Arabesque replied to SassyC85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@summerseeker summed it up well. It does get better & easier. Allow your body to take the time it needs to recover & get used to the changes - it has been through a lot. It will take the time it needs & you can’t control that. And same with your head. Remember too you’re likely experiencing a wash of hormones which are messing with your emotions (all the estrogen stored in your fat being released as you lose weight) - it can be a roller coaster. There may be days you feel you’re going nowhere or even going backwards but you’ll have fewer of those days & they’ll happen less often. I didn’t hit my protein & fluids for a while & my surgeon was okay with it because I was making an effort & slowly getting closer. I still drink all night too. I found warm drinks easier to tolerate. Are you allowed green or herbal teas? Ginger tea may help with your nausea. Try spreading out when you take your vitamins to reduce the nausea taking them can cause - I took half in the am & half in the pm. All the best. -
I’ve heard it too from various sources. But then think of all the other ‘facts’ we believed as true & then … I eat my protein throughout the day: all meals & snacks contain protein (except fruit of course 😉). How much protein are you advised to eat? We’re usually told collagen isn’t a complete protein (missing some essential amino acids) & it shouldn't be counted in your daily total. Consider it a bonus for other benefits. Whey is fine. But do check with your dietician.

I'm so excited, I got my surgery date today and we finalized all the details of the surgery!!! I'll be doing the duodenal switch with a longer common channel since I have a history of vitamin D deficiency and anemia. The surgeon talked to my GI specialist and they signed off of on it so everyone is on board thankfully. We picked December 13th, since I'll be in New Zealand for most of November. He said 2 weeks is standard for their liver reduction diet but if I added in a gradual 3rd week it would probably help as a bonus week. Their liver reduction diet is 2 shakes, 2 snacks and a lean, green dinner until one week before surgery, when it switches to all fluids. So basically I'll be starting the diet as soon as we get back from traveling... I already have 7 flavors of premier protein shakes in my closet. LOL (They require the shakes be either those or the bariatric advantage powder as per some study they are following). I'm really happy to be at this stage of everything, I know the 2 months will fly by fast!

I do break it up. My drink in the morning has whey and collagen (mostly colagen) and I need to add more whey which puts me over the magic 30g. Just trying to figure out if I'm wasting protein at this point.
-
I've always heard that, too, but I don't know if there's hardcore research behind that. Although that said, it's probably a good idea to break it up regardless, so you're getting some protein several times a day (at least three times - maybe more if you're allowed snacks between meals)

4 week Post-op feeling down
summerseeker replied to SassyC85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We all have the regrets at some point, its a whole new world. You need to give yourself a pat on the back for getting to a month out. I promise it will get better very soon. I did not appreciate how big a surgery it was TBH. It is a massive learning curve. Use your team when you need to, that's what they are there for. As we all have been given different regimes we do not know what yours entails Lots of us can not make the liquid or protein goals. As soon as you can, you will feel so much better. Try your hardest to get the liquid in. Hot, cold or frozen. It doesn't matter which, just sip all day long. Lots of us still take drinks to bed too. One day you will be able to drink easier. Your internal stitch line will calm down and the swelling will dissipate. Then you can take bigger mouthfuls. Lots of liquid without food will made you nauseous too. Apparently we have the same amount of stomach acid as pre surgery and this rises [GERD] when we sleep lying flat. If this is a problem, try propping yourself on pillows, a bed wedge helped me. I had to drop the iron in my vitamins, it made me super nauseous. Don't be afraid to go back a step if the next step is too far for you at the moment. I never did puree, just looking at it made me heave. You are not alone on this site, We will help you all we can -
Basically, no. We do hear this from time to time but I have no idea where it came from (as far as legitimate scientific sources.} I can buy into the idea that protein absorption would decrease some with increasing amounts in a meal, that wouldn't be unusual biologically (as in the first 30g is fully absorbed, the next 30 only 90%, etc.) But looking at it from an evolutionary perspective, our ancestors would gorge themselves on an antelope when they killed one, and then have relatively little protein for several days until they had another successful hunt. They got along just fine. That said, I generally do break it up during the day, but that's more of a balance thing, in order to also get in the appropriate amount of fruits, veg, grains, legumes, etc., though it can take a while before one gets to the point of doing that other than in token amounts (though good for helping to establish good long term habits!)

I read that we can only absorb 30g of Protein per meal. Is this true? What have you heard from your nutritionist? Thanks in advance! Edit: Does this include all types... whey and collagen specifically.

Mexico Bariatric Center Tijuana
Wellington4321 replied to RiaMaleah's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
A number of people from another support site I've been using for years have been patients @ Mexico Bariatric Center in Tijuana. I've heard very positive results. I've traveled overseas for loose skin removal and dental work, and it's work out both times as high quality at substantially lower prices. My strongest recommendation is to know who your doctor will be and confirm their reviews and experience. Also the medical hotels in my experience are a way better option than family care, at least for me. Good luck! -

Had surgery for GERD, need to gain weight... suggestions?
jesscanntoo replied to jesscanntoo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Already drinking a couple protein shakes a day. Haven’t been able to get that many calories in yet. The most I’ve hit yet has been 800 and I felt horrendous. Just bloated. But I am working on every suggestion to see what seems to work, so thank you. -

Haven’t heard of this particular one (shake)…. I’ve only had regular ensures and they aren’t enough protein. I’ll do a search for these. Thanks. -
What stage are you at OP and what surgery did you have? I had a sleeve 22 months ago and from a few months post up I have got my protein mainly from meat/dairy (CHEESE but also yoghurt)/pulses/nuts. Deli meat is my go to snack even now. I often cook a little more meat than I need for family dinners and keep the leftovers in the fridge for easy grabbing. I make a point of eating nuts and seeds absolutely every day, even if small quantities, because I think they have loads of micronutrients that it's hard to get from elsewhere. I haven't done protein shakes or bars or added powders in forever but I'm sure they're a godsend if you're having difficulty in the longer term with getting your protein in - I just don't need them because of my sliced turkey addiction, LOL.

Best way to get protein
Shanna NYC replied to TiffanyY2's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I still do a shake most days, but mainly because I drink Proffees so I figure I might as well get in a good dose of protein in with my coffee - dual purpose. I love meats, tuna, eggs, string cheese, cottage cheese and Oikos yogurt. I also like adding in Catalina Crunch cereals into my yogurt which provides texture with a boost of protein and fiber and no added sugar. Also so far love my Ninja creami. Sometimes I throw in a protein water - Protein2O. Also try to have high protein snacks around when I want a bit of something extra or can't quite stomach a full meal - Quest chips, Quest crackers, Built Bars, Wilde Chicken chips. I don't have them daily, but I like to keep them around to travel with so I always have a healthier option on hand. -

My team told me to drink more milk, cheap, natural and great protein -
Good Morning, I am 9 days post op and have started purées. I’m trying to track my protein but I’m getting confused. This morning I made one pack of butter grits, with 1/2c Fairlife milk, and 1/2 scoop of isoprene protein powder. When you add that up it comes to 21 G protein. If I eat 2 oz how much protein did I eat?

I was every three months from my surgeon but my GP was also getting one in between for the first year & then was happy to review the surgeon’s requests. At two years it was just the three months from my surgeon’s colleague who does his follow ups. When I reached three years it became every 6 months. I didn’t & don’t mind getting so many as it’s been informative to track my levels but also allowed the doctors to pick up fluctuation trends (like my vitamin D dropping in winter) & my protein malabsorption issue which began at 2 years after my gall was removed. I expect I’ll always have regular tests (1 or 2 a year) because of the protein issue.

Best way to get protein
Arabesque replied to TiffanyY2's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I get mine from real food. Haven’t touched a protein shake or protein powder since my purée stage began. They were disgusting & I didn’t want to spend my life drinking any of my meals. Of course it’s easier to meet your protein goals as you progress & your meal size increases & additional protein via a shake may be needed (I ate a yoghurt with 20g to boost mine & often still do). I breakfast on oats with seeds & blueberries made on milk. Lunch is often mostly protein like prawns, calamari, yoghurt with seeds, savoury egg muffins, (gone off chicken tenders & omelettes at the moment). Dinner is meat & vegetables. My snacks can be any combination of cheese, multi grain crackers with liverwurst or labneh, peanut paste, nuts, jerky & I have a protein bar most nights to top up my protein. I used to make a chia pudding as a night time top up but wanted a change (mmm, I might make some today). I often add barley, chickpeas or lentils to any soups, stews or mince based dishes I make for extra protein too.
