Loose Way More Weight With Low Carb
Lorrie Knox Malone replied to joyfuljoy's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I so totally agree with what you've been explaining. I am a band to sleeve, post op 2weeks. I was vegan before the sleeve but had some trouble w/the raw veggies after surgery, so I've added organic greek yogurt, whey Protein...it's a good quilty..but still, not my favorite. till I can tollate raw veggies again. But I agree if you are going to work out and strenght train you're body needs the good carbs to give you energy. Low carb high protein diets are not healthy. Eat whole foods organic when you can. Have you ever the book "The China Study"? Great read. -
Okay, here's my formula: I'm all-in with my doc's guidelines to minimize carbs and focus on lean Protein and fluids – AND take all my Vitamins and supplements. I have one 30g Premier Protein shake every morning to kick things off, a 24oz tumbler of Fluid (Crystal Light decaf iced tea) throughout the morning, lean protein and maybe a few veggies for lunch, another 24oz tumbler of fluid throughout the afternoon, a healthy (low-carb, no starch) dinner, one last 24oz tumbler of fluid throughout the evening, and maybe a couple of Snacks, like low-cal Greek yogurt, as needed. I haven't had a bite of processed sugar since surgery, and don't miss it. I don't really worry about calories because they take care of themselves, and my secret weapon "comfort" snack (or meal replacement) is beef Jerky (low-fat and tons of protein). I try to walk 40 minutes per day, and try to go to the gym on Saturdays. Lather, rinse, repeat. I go to tons of social eating events and quite a few restaurants, but always plan ahead in order to control what goes in my mouth. If necessary, I bring my own food and drink. And I Celebrate each and every scale and non-scale victory while focusing on enjoying the ride. So far, so good! You may notice that this involves a somewhat selfish, or self-centered approach. I kind of think that's necessary in order to always keep your program as one of your top priorities. Stuff happens along the way, but we can't let it derail our journey. Don't leave the possibility of failure as an option. That's "old thinking". A positive, I'm gonna do this, no matter what! attitude really helps. Good luck!

My nutritionist has similar guidelines. Too lazy to look for my handbook, but I think the rules were 20 gms Protein, low carbs and sugar under 8 gms per serving. It also had to be isolates and not concentrates. My own issues were allergies to food dyes, artificial sugars and stevia. Sucrolose was okay for a bit but eventually started irritating me as well. I also can't eat processed foods, so they needed to have minimal ingredients. I finally settled on Isopure unflavored whey isolate. I then make my own in the nutra bullet with FAGE 0% greek yogurt. I added fresh fruit, almond butter or cacao powder to flavor them. Premade I like Orgain Organics.

Of course, you should do what your doc says..... but here's my experience - restriction has so much to do with not getting hungry between meals, and so until you get there, no snacking can be very hard to do. When I got my latest fill, I was getting hungry before dinner, so I called my nurse, and she said to add a small snack, such as yogurt. For me, if I get too hungry, I will eat more than I need to, or eat unhealthy foods. So long as you are sticking to your target calorie goal each day, I don't see how a 100 cal snack could hurt, especially if it keeps you from overeating later.

New to Forum - banded on Feb 27 Wednesday 2013
NurseKelly replied to TheBet1969's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Congrats on being a bandster! My doctor told me not to count the day of surgery, so day one is actually the day after. One thing I have learned while reading these forums is the amount of variation all of the surgeons have for when to start clear fluids, then full fluids progressing to mushy or pureed and then finally regular food. I suggest calling your clinic and asking them, I am surprised they didn't send you home with detailed instructions. I had to spend five days on clear fluids and now am on my fifth day of full fluids (soups, pudding, yogurt), I have one more day then onto mushie pureed!! I am glad you are feeling well! -
Protein supplements and calcium citrate
JamieLogical replied to Sandy Martinez-Pumar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pretty addicted to Questbars at this point. I love the chocolate chip cookie dough flavor and have two a day. One for "breakfast" and one at the very end of the day, about an hour before I go to bed. Between those two bars, I get 42 grams of protein, so getting 40-ish more with my lunch, dinner, and snacks isn't too challenging. Just put protein first every thime you eat! My snacks are always greek yogurt or "meat sticks" (like beef sticks but made with turkey or pork too). My lunches and dinners are always meat/seafood or meat and beans. I'll sometimes have an egg and/or cheese in there as well. -
Yesterday was the first day for me, and in the beginning I was fine, but by the end of the night I was STARVING LOL This is a breakdown of what I can have: Breakfast: SF carnation instant Breakfast 1 light yopliat yogurt any flavor. A.m. Snack: Atkins Advantage shake (any flavor) Lunch: Cambell's Soup at Hand-Classic Tomato SF jell-o chocolate swirl pudding SF Jell-o Gelatin (any flavor) PM snack: 8 oz V8 Dinner: 1/2 c low fat cottage cheese 1 C creamed (strained) soup Regular popsicle Bedtime snack No Sugar added fudgesicle This was the sample menu, but I have been following that. I can't go over more than 150 carbs per day and 50 to 60 grams of Protein a day. My hubby hid my scale this morning LOL I told him last night I wanted to weigh the morning of my surgery. I'd LOVE to have a salad by the end of the day :smile2:) We will make it though! It will be worth it. I keep thinking about possibly having only one or two incisions! That's my motivation!

Two Weeks Post-Op - Questions!
my3sons75 replied to JessRess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc said to consider the "mushies" as anything you can smash with a fork, but she wants me to stay away from carbs like mashed potatoes. I've been having cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs (which I normally don't like) but I cook a little mexican chorizo and add to my eggs - yummy!, tuna/chicken, and salmon. I made some yummy salmon in the oven and it was easy. I don't normally like it much but used some lemon and light butter spray...it was pretty good. I found some at walmart in the fish section, there have bags of 4 frozen salmon fillets for only about 5 dollars, which isn't too bad. My mushie stage is only a week, so I don't have to do it too long. I really like to use Mio in Water. It's drops you squeeze into your water for flavor - like Crystal Light - but liquid. My fav is the berry pomegranate but they have lots of flavors. I'm not a huge water drinker either, and it really helps me to get my water in. -
Three weeks Post op VGS what can we eat?
The Greater Fool replied to lchambless's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Even "phases" are an individual surgeon and nutritionist thing. You would think they would have come up with a consistent plan for post-ops, but no such luck. Nutritional programs are like religions, surgeons & nutritionists have their beliefs that they will go to their graves to defend. They are as important as life and death and every other plan is wrong. Your surgeons' plan is the path to success, everything else will lead to failure. Get a couple drinks in your nutritionist and they may admit the ultimate truth: that it is consistency in a healthy plan that is the key to everlasting... err... maintenance. Since you mentioned shakes, broth, jello, pudding, and scrambled egg I should think anything with similar consistencies would be OK. Perhaps mashed potatoes, yogurt. I think you could probably get away with pureed just about anything protein or veggie. Basically, anything similar to what you are doing now. Likewise if your surgeon mentioned any goals or types of food for this period you could do things that would also meet those goals. Good luck, Tek -

So happy with this sleeve ! 8 weeks out
Nicholej replied to Harley59's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was about where you are 4 days ago, but today is my 15th day post-op and I turned a corner (thankfully)! I feel amazing today, minimal pain and it's the last day I have be on clear liquids. It was also my first day back to work! I'm not sure if you are on clear or full liquids? Clear liquids-drink broth, protein shakes made with water, Isopure, SF/no carb Jello, SF/no-carb popsicles. Full liquids-Drink protein with almond or skim milk (Syntrax nectar is my favorite protein-no carbs, mixes well with water or milks), low-fat creamy soups (such as low fat/low carb butternut squash soup or tomato soup or cream of broccoli soup with the chunks strained out). I use Ideal Protein or Barwise products, but you can also make your own from scratch if you have time. Soft foods phase-eat scrambled eggs or tofu, low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat SF yogurt (use Fage Greek fat free for optimal protein with low carbs). Eat only 2 oz at a time. Do not drink 30 minutes before or after you eat to train yourself to eat slowly and fill on 2 oz. If you drink while you eat, you will eat more than you should and can stretch your stomach which will ultimately lead to slowed or stopped weight loss. Eventually this will become weight gain. Phase 4-lifelong phase is food you can tolerate, only 2 oz at a time, chew/chew/chew! No beverage 30 minutes before and after eating. Set a timer on your phone to help you. Journal everything you eat to hold yourself accountable. Please let me know if you want me to email you my post-op eating plan. All the best to you! It will get better and suddenly you will feel amazing! Thank you so much for all of the information, yes please if you don't mind emailing it to me I would appreciate it. -
Confused about Carbs...
LumpySpacePrincess replied to MarceMonster's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you're referring to post-op, as Fireflea says, you should be focusing on getting in your Protein and Water FIRST. I avoided any fruit (other than the occasional strawberry or two chopped up in my high protein yogurt) for the first 9 months post-op. Fruit does have nutritional value, but to your body it is basically candy that grows on trees. Stick with non-starchy vegetables and you will get just as many nutrients without the sugar load. -
I'm one week into my 2 week preop diet. It consists of 2 shakes a day either protein or no sugar carnation instant breakfast, nonfat yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, steamed or raw veggies and fruit. ( they gave a couple of different meal plans switching up the servings on these so the amount varies). I can also have up to 64 oz of low calorie sugar free fluids like crystal light, unsweetened iced tea, water, sf jello, sf popsicle, or broth.

I am 1 week and 1 day post op Gastric Bypass. Today I started puréed food. Everyone talks about how fast they get full. I know I’m probably over thinking this BUT I had 1/2 of a Greek yogurt around 1:00 and around 6:00 I had a 1/2 cup of a creamy soup. In between I also kept up with my protein shake. I’m comfortable but not over full at all like everyone made it sound that I would be. Can anyone give me a little idea what you are or were taking in around this time please :)

I went on a group trip less than 3 weeks after surgery. No one knew I had the surgery. I was scared of getting stuck, etc in front of people but overall it was totally fine. Whenever possible, order soft foods. I stuck to yogurt for breakfast and soups for dinner. Lunch was hard because people were eating sandwiches. I did lie a couple times and said I wasn't feeling well so i was able to avoid some foods. You'll be new from surgery so you wont have much of an appetite. I recommend you eat SLOW. I messed up and got stuck. It was horrible and I had to excuse myself to the bathroom. There was dessert so I did try sorbet and just a few spoonfuls. That way, people saw me eating but didn't really notice that I was eating much less than usual. You'll be fine. Just go with how you feel a s eat slowly. Good luck.

Flying after surgery, and puréed foods
JamieLogical replied to RoadToMe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can bring packets of Protein powder and a collapsible funnel with you. Then just buy bottled Water or milk once you are through security and mix the Protein Powder into the bottle. A lot of airports also have thing like yogurt or cheese sticks for sale at various stands. Are you allowed cheese sticks in your pureed stage? I was. If you don't know, maybe you can ask your nutritionist ahead of time. For eating out, you are going to be pretty limited to just Soups. Be careful to not eat any of the more solid chunky bits. Definitely do NOT eat the celery if there's celery in there. It's way too fibrous, even cooked. -
Overwhelmed at the thought of the new way of life I will have to adapt
NavyMom2006 replied to MauiGirl5555's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I'm here to throw my 2 cents in, since I'm pretty new to the process - 2 weeks post surgery. I was in the hospital overnight, and while a bit nauseous, was able to get down Water and a bit of diluted apple juice. The first couple of days home I was so tired I slept most of the day and night. I started on the Protein drink (Pure Protein) and although it took a couple of hours to drink one, I managed to get in two per day. Now I can finish one in about an hour. Progress!!! I did have some cream of chicken Soup the other night, which was delish. I had just a bit of yogurt the other day, and some cottage cheese yesterday. You really think you're going to be able to eat a small container full, but believe me, you can't! I have tried to eat more than a couple of spoonfuls and you feel it right in your throat. If you don't stop, then you're going to be throwing up and that hurts worse! The "good" thing about all that is that you're really not hungry, so the two or three spoonfuls is actually good. You get the taste of whatever it is you're eating, and it really is enough to satisfy. Shoot, it even takes me 10-15 minutes to eat sugar free Jello cup! I'm so content with the two Protein shakes and tons of water a day, that I'm not really even motivated to "eat" other foods, but know that I need to at some point. That to me is the scariest part of this at this point. -
Portion size for puree stage?
Amie replied to amytug's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1/4 cup is perfect for me with things like refried beans, chili, and egg salad. I can almost get 1/2 of cottage cheese and yogurt in. It's still hard for me to tell if and when I'm full so I have to measure so I don't get that over full feeling. -
When did you start a soft diet? Post-op?
RickM replied to Quickly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine started in the hospital with things like scrambled eggs and yogurt. As to what can be tolerated is a very individual thing, beyond whatever the surgeon wants you to try and when. I had no problems with anything that I tried and progressed fairly quickly, trying new things a little at a time, getting progressively thicker, chunkier and less soft. Others have a problem progressing very rapidly and that's OK - there's a wide variation between what we as individuals can tolerate and when. When my wife went through this a few years ago, she had more problems with various food tolerances, and that's just the way she is - the doc had no worries about either of us, but just somewhat different responses within normal experience. -
What are you eating one month post-op

The Syntrax Nectar Roadside Lemonade was my saving grace too! I couldn't stomach the "milky" shakes. I added a packet of Crystal Light lemonade to give it an extra punch of flavor. Drink it over ice too. I also add the Syntrax Lemonade to plain Fage yogurt. It kind of tastes like a lemon cheesecake filling or custard. Yum. -
5 Weeks Post Op Food and Travel Advice
liannatx replied to almosttogoal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 5 weeks I was still having a Protein drink for Breakfast daily. Lunch/Dinner/Snack Staples that are cheap and easy: Tuna salad, Chicken salad, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Scrambled egg with cheese, refried Beans with cheese. I found Tilipia and Flounder very easy to digest, and super quick and easy to cook in a skillet with a touch of olive oil and some seasonings. A package of turkey meatballs are very convenient as a meal or protein snack. String cheese, Laughing cow, or sliced cheese with a piece of lunch meat make a great roll-up. Beef jerky is always handy and keeps well. A boiled egg is just about the perfect size for a meal or snack at 5 weeks. -

Help ..I cant loose the last 4 pounds needed to be approved
sweetie716 replied to listic2001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd say drink a ton of Water (at least the 8 cups a day). If you can, drink it plain since some sweetners in crystal light/mio can make it seem even harder to give up carbs for some people. Then, if you can get a good balanced Protein shake mix like Bariatric Advantage, drink those for 2 meals and then about 3 oz of meat and some veggies for dinner. If you need the 2 Snacks between meals stick to high protein/low carb ones like cheese sticks, nuts, or maybe a carefully selected yogurt. You can do this! -
Newbie: started off great and going downhill fast!!
DroppingOneHundred posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, this is my first post and I hope you all can shed some insight! I have read a few posts (on this site and google) about this topic and no real answer has come to be! I had my gastric bypass 4/4/17, and was doing great the first week! By my one week check up I was getting in 3 protein shakes a day, water in between, and a few spoonfuls of yogurt and apple sauce through out the day! I was proud of how good I was feeling. Happy with my decision. Got my staples out (those things are the devil) and was happy! Almost immediately the next day or so I started getting nauseous sipping my shake. Would set it down. Put back in fridge. Try to finish later. Same thing. Bubble a bite of yogurt. And vomit. I was so confused. Would sip some water... then same. Walked away from everything for hours and then try again and same results. Vomit. All day long. Those first couple of days that it started (right after my one week mark) I was very confused and still trying. Now, at 3.5 weeks out I am down to one protein shake very slowly sipped over 2-3 hours and barely 30-40 oz of water sipped through out the day. That's it. Zofran was called in for me last week and no change. I've tried food again (pudding, yogurt, apple sauce) and all come back up and if I drink my shake "fast" and by fast I mean over the course of ONE hour it also gives me the same gagging nauseous feeling. I feel so sick all day long! On the flip side, I'm perfectly fine with just water, herbal tea, even gaterade, but it's ANYTHING thicker that causes issues. i am a mom to FOUR kids. It feels exactly like the all day morning sickness I had with my two girls for nine months straight. I feel like I'm failing as a mother because I'm so energy depleted my patience wains fast. I love them dearly, and they are all younger than the age of six, so they have no clue what I'm going through. I keep telling them "mommy is sick" but they obviously don't know why. I can't live off just water and a sip or two of protein shake. Help!
