Why Getting Sleeved was the Biggest Mistake of My Life
p1Sz replied to a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I actually don't think the original post is detrimental to information seekers. The point of the forum is to hear multiple viewpoints. If reading this one post makes someone decide against surgery, they're probably not ready, otherwise they'd continue seeking. I also think it is just these kinds of posts that can stir the most interesting conversations. For me, it's made me think about: 1) What this process is like for a teenager or young adult. I've always thought "I wish I'd had this when I was 18." Now, I'm not so sure. As others have said, I'm not sure I would have been equipped then to be successful. 2) The downside of having surgery done far away from your home. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the Mexico option is out there. But I now think the ideal is insurance covers everyone, so you don't have to go out of country. I gotta think having your care team and support group nearby is a good thing. 3) I don't think even the best US providers are doing as good a job on follow-up psych care as they should. 4) Even though WLS has been around a while, patients and doctors are still "figuring things out." For example, there are new studies that suggest combining WLS with obesity drugs to improve results. Or a study suggesting treatment with growth hormone for six months post-op to prevent muscle loss. Or studies that indicate WLS does not impact depression. Conflicting studies about whether surgery leads to longer life for severely obese and/or those over 65. Or medical opinions that the BMI cutoff should be lowered to 30. There's just a lot we don't know about why this does and doesn't work. My point is, these bigger issue questions are interesting (to me) and are usually only stirred up by raw posts. I'm glad we can also get advice from each other on cheapest Vitamins and share NSVs. But I'm also glad people feel free to share real fear and pain and anger. And I hope that doesn't change. -
Taking off my fat suit

Had a busy day yesterday so didn't get chance to do my 9 week update. Things continue to be good :-) lost 6lb this week so that helps make up for the no loss while I Watson holiday! The greater thing tho is that I've managed to come back from a holiday and get back on plan, which is a big achievement for me and another sure sign the sleeve is a good decision for me :-) So I'm no in the 16's and started in the 20's (stones). Love it!! Had another shopping splurge this week bought some gym gear which was equally as exciting as the dress I bought to wear to my besties 40th bday party at the end of August! Both of these are wonderful nsv's for me I just need to start using the gym gear now! I have s training session to get some tips on using kettle bells with a friend next week and then I can get started with that. I'm thinking of starting a few other classes too. I had a chat with my mum this week, she was just generally asking how I am feeling and coping, I said to her I honestly haven't had a minute of regret and feel better physically and emotionally than I ever have. It truly is the best decision I ever made :-) -

There are no little NSVs. They are all hugely important and I'm glad you shared this one with us.. -
Well, folks, I stepped way WAY out of my comfort zone and treated my body to a massage yesterday. Wow! What a wonderful experience. Poor body image and embarrassment fused with shame had stopped me before surgery. Although I'm only down 30-some pounds, I decided to break with old patterns and give it a try. It was rejuvenating and relaxing. Everything I hoped. I've already booked my next on for mid-September.

They look really nice and sell in the UK too whohoooo. Well done with the NSV!!! Kate -
So I buy Enell sports bras. They are expensive, but the girls are firmly planted in them. I realized that the bra I had prior to surgery was now to big (I noticed more jiggle). They size between 0 and 8, and sizes 6-8 cost extra (like any thing plus size..ugg) and only comes in boring colors. I was able to downsize from a size 7 bra too a size 4, and got a cutesy color too, with no upcharge! Seems so minor but this really made my day. Can't wait for my run in the morning!!

HUGE step for me (NSV)
pink dahlia replied to Paige Dukes's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Paige Dukes, I loved reading your post about the new picture (Wow ! You're brave !), but the part that struck me the most was "I didnt wear shorts in public and didn't even leave the house without a cardigan, regardless of the temperature. " That comment was me to a T ! I was very uncomfortable with my body, especially my belly. Always had a cardigan or lite jacket to cover it up. I didn't even like walking out to the mailbox in case a car went by. Now ? Totally. Different. Occasionally knee length shorts, capris or slim jeans, and a nice t shirt. Almost flat stomach . No cardigan needed, although I still love /wear them when necessary. I hope everything continues to go well for you, many more NSV's coming your way ! Congratulations again !! -
HUGE step for me (NSV)

My whole life is one big NSV. My most recent one was this trip to London I took. Three years ago I never thought I'd get there and it's a place I've wanted to visit since I was a young woman. Everything about it was a NSV from biking through the royal parks to walking all over the city. NSVs can also be very small and/or intimate such as a throwaway comment I got from a nurse at a recent check up. She put the exam table down so my legs wouldn't dangle. I'm a short lady..always have been but as a heavy short lady, no one said what the nurse said as she put the table lower. She laughed and said, let me lower this..you really are an itty-bitty thing, aren't you?' Itty-bitty. Never though I hear anyone describe me that way but these day, yes...I'm kinda itty-bitty. -

HUGE step for me (NSV)

NSV = Non scale victory, like when the scale doesn't move, but who cares because your pants are suddenly too loose ! Or some one notices your face is thinner ( one of my 1st NSV's) and ask you if you've lost weight, or you can do something that you could'nt do before WLS , like paint your own toes because your tummy has shrunk ! These things can keep you going when you have a stall and dont feel you're making any progress ! -

Way to go!! What does NSV stand for though? -
Major non scale victory for me today! I was banded on the 14th. Altogether from starting the pre-op diet to now I have lost about 28 lbs. I have only been really conscious of it due to the scale moving and my clothes becoming baggier. I didn't look in the mirror and feel like I looked any different. Today I had one of my first NSVs. I noticed my facebook picture was kind of old and needed updating, so I took a few selfies. This was the first time I was like "wow, nearly 30 pounds does make a difference." Well, I have vacation in a week or so and my husband reminded me to try on my old swimsuit to see if it fit in case I needed to buy another. After trying it on and looking in the mirror I, for the first time, really saw myself. My luck with my selfies inspired me to take a picture, which led to me making the jump and posting the photo to my Facebook page. This may not seem like a big deal to some but I don't even wear shorts in public and feel naked if I leave the house without a cardigan, regardless of the temp outside. I have always felt uncomfortable in my own skin and to post a photo of myself in a swimsuit on social media was MAJOR for me. I was sweating bullets with my finger over the "post" button and was so afraid I would be met with negativity over it but friends have come out of the woodwork to leave positive messages on the photo. It has become my most liked and most commented on photo. I even had a girl friend say "God, I wish I had your legs!" I have NEVER had ANYONE say they wanted a part of their body to look like mine. I was floored. The point of this lengthy post is that I overcame a major fear today and it came as a result of this weight loss journey. I feel like I have made a step forward with my confidence and self worth today. And it didn't come from the people who commented on my photo, it came from the realization that I am a person of worth and beauty and I deserve to be happy and healthy. I couldn't have made it to this point without having decided I was worth WLS. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to do this and am looking forward to more personal growth and additional NSVs along the way. Has anyone else had a NSV recently? I would like to hear more uplifting stories, no matter how small or large!

@@rp1980 those aren't good NSV's they are GREAT 28,000 steps i'd have to run hard to keep up wi th you running is against my religion i'd have to walk I can relate to the mention of how many lbs you (and me earlier) "still" have to loose(75 lbs for you) as you think about the above concentrate on well you are doing!!! instead of how much you have to go keep up the great job kathy congrats -
I went to Cedar Point amusement park over the weekend and I fit into every roller coaster that I tried! Even the little tiny ones. I've been fearful of trying roller coasters for years now! We also met up with family members whom I haven't seen in a couple years and I received many compliments (including the classic "you better not lose any more weight"). I still have about 75 lbs to lose but it was nice to hear. I also walked 28,000 steps that day (my personal best) and my shorts kept slipping down, even with a belt. All in all, a good weekend!

5 years + with lapband and happy
B-52 replied to Julie norton's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Will be 5 years soon and still going great.....most days don't even think about it anymore, just live every day like any other day. It all becomes second nature and routine.... I prefer my band tight enough to restrict me from overeating....that was my problem before surgery. Could not control my appetite with no self control or discipline.....in other words I could not follow any prescribed diets..... Sure there are foods I will never eat again, but in return I am NEVER hungry, and when I do eat my portions are controlled....IMPOSSIBLE to overeat or indulge......It just doesn't get any better! Very Easy! To me it is about restriction... Diets are the thing of the past, so is the fear of ever being over weight again..... (BTW, the foods I will never eat again, were food groups that are good to eat anyway and should be avoided.....pastas, breads, meat, etc....so it's all for the good...) And I agree...the people who I followed when I first came here, are all gone. There is not much reason to stay, and I often wonder why I still log on.....maybe because it reminds me from where I came and where I am now....my daily NSV I suppose. Every-time I do log on, I click "New Content" under Lap Band forums, and all the posts in the Lap Band section are comprised of people with the sleeve or types other than Lap Band!!! -
I went to bingo and was approached by 2 ladies who asked me what's my secret? They said because you have lost some weight. I thanked them because that was the first time that someone outside of my family and friends to notice my weight loss. I was smiling from ear to ear. I'm down 55 lbs and was starting to get worried, like damn was I really that fat?

@@cuchas hmmmmm i was 6 months 3 years ago at the time i think i had lost about 70 lbs it took me almost 6 more months to loose my final 35 lbs (reaching goal) if your stats are different (they probably will be) nothing to worry about we all loose lbs in various time periods never, ever compare your weight loss to me or anyone else people have been shot for less don't worry about the time period it takes to loose the weight some people think they will go to bed one night weighing 235 lbs and wake up at GOAL doesn't work that way 11 months or one year, or whatever to reach goal whats the big deal?? you will be looking/feeling better month to month smaller clothes sizes many more wonderful things will happen (NSV's) not sure if you are pre or post op either way good luck kathy

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
NoMoBand replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been following another post that was posted by Butterfly23 in the General Gastric Sleeve Discussion titled "Benefits of losing weight slower than expected" where Butterfly23 makes some excellent points to why losing weight slowly is a benefit. These are the points that Butterfly23 posted and have given me a new appreciation. I hope she doesn't mind that I quoted her points in this post. Thank you Butterfly23 for posting these points. (see below) This is the list that Butterfly23 has posted on her post on the benefits of losing slowly: More time to develop healthy eating habits before maintenance Skin has more time to catch up (more time to lotion!) Shifting focus to NSVs like sitting in booths and chairs with arms Less chance of gallstones Opportunity to practice loving kindness towards myself and being grateful for any positive change Chance to manage expectations – if it wasn’t for WLS, I’d be thrilled with my loss, so why not be thrilled now? Practice focusing on my own wins and not comparing self to others Not having to explain to others since loss isn’t dramatic (yet) Chance to trust the process and not focus on the end (self-care, water/protein/low-carb/active) Redefine success as how I feel, not numbers on scale Understanding this is not a diet, this is my lifestyle now, so what is the rush? My favorite is not having to explain to others since loss isn't dramatic (yet) With lapband I lost weight very quickly and people at work were concerned about me thinking that I was ill or maybe dying. I'll never forget one division called me into their area and so very carefully asked if I was sick and if I was OK. WOW! jake
