My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

I am having Gastric Sleeve surgery May 3rd and my doc has us do the modified liquid diet ( meaning, no food at all, no Jello, no strained soups, nothing) for 14 days. It is awful, I won't lie, but once you get past day 7 or so, you kind of become numb to it all ; ) I have lost 19 pounds though, and hoping that helps with the surgery. And, it's good practice for the rest of my life after surgery. The zero sugar jolly ranchers have been very helpful for me...I can have 4 of them a day and when it gets really hard they take me over that hump. Good luck, we can do this!

    Recent Injury Rant

honestly, weight loss is about 90% food and only 10% exercise. I know WLS patients who lost a ton of weight even without exercise. That said, exercise is great for your overall health and people should do it - but an injury that causes a temporary pause in your routine is not going to be the end of your weight loss. also, you could be in a stall - they're very common. Just stick to your program and your weight loss will eventually start up again. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks. and no, I doubt "this is it" as long as you're adhering to your program. Most of us lose for a year - if not more (20 months for me - but I started out much heavier than you, so I had a lot more to lose)

    Iron Deficiency Anemia - Recipes

Anemia is becoming more common these days. I know several women who are anaemic & have regular transfusions. Rarely heard of it 10 years ago. Are you still eating a high protein diet? Have they looked for a possible cause of your anaemia? Infection, auto immune issue, absorption issue, etc. Make sure you’re consuming iron rich foods including: Red meat, pork and poultry Seafood Beans Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach Dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas Peas Increase your vitamin C as it aids iron absorption. As well as citrus fruits try: Broccoli Grapefruit Kiwi Leafy greens Melons Oranges Peppers Strawberries Tangerines Tomatoes Do you still have your dietician’s details? Maybe you can contact them for some advice.

    Pain after surgery

Sorry you are in so much pain. There are two different gas pains. One is from the abdominal inflation and is trapped in your abdominal cavity which, from what I was told, presses on your diaphragm and the shoulder pain is inferred from nerves near the diaphragm. The other is intestinal gas due to the surgery itself. Unfortunately, I found my pain meds did not touch either one. The shoulder pain took about 2-3 days to go away (it gets re-absorbed into the body) but my intestinal gas pains took about 10 days. I found the intestinal gas to much more painful. I could literally feel the air bubbles moving through my system. I did take chewable Gas-X and found little relief (they will only help the intestinal gas). Eventually, it will be gone and a dim memory...hope you are feeling better otherwise.
  5. I took all of my pills a few hours after surgery. Talk to your clinic, because the real issue is taking it BEFORE surgery. After surgery it took me a long time to take pills, but now I can take all 10 at once like before.

    Leg soreness?

It could be that you are just having muscle pain if you have not done much physical activity before the surgery but you should check it out for a possible DVT. I had some pain in my legs the first couple days and had the DVT possibility checked out. I was fine. The reason for my pain in my mind was that I was walking in the hospital in bare feet for hours upon hours dragging an IV pole and walking differently than I normally do. The soreness cleared up after a few days and I am off to the races. Now, I have been getting pains near my hips on the outside of my legs. I have been doing 5-6 miles of walking a day and bike riding on weekends for 10-15 miles. I also do 100 squats every morning. I think it is just over use of the legs.

I don't have a surgery date yet. I have a Results visit on 5/16 and I hope to get a date then. I had extensive pre-procedure testing that I completed as rapidly as i could, but still, I started this process on 2/22/22 and I will be thrilled to get a 6/13 surgery date. School lets out 6/10. I was skeptical when I read that this process could take a few months, but clearly it has taken awhile in my case.

    sinusitis or covid

I am on day 3 liquid diet, surgery scheduled May 10.... I am freaking out with having my allergies stirring up with nasal and chest congestion. Surgical office said allergy medicine and micinex is ok but no antibiotics. Tested negative for COVID this morning. I will loose it if I go 2 weeks and have to reschedule sur😭🥺 Anyone else have this problem?
  9. I am starting to go back to my old habit of grazing and other mindless eating habits. I don’t eat as much of course but the habit is not something I want to continue. It’s the festive season in my community so there’ve been more snacks around the house. Trying to curb that. My water intake hasn’t been great but my protein’s not too bad. I aim for 20-25g (about 800oz I think) Anything less and my lethargy will render me useless. I’m envious of all the weight loss you guys have been having. I’m only at -40lbs 10 weeks post surgery. I haven’t been moving as much though. I got covid 7 weeks post surgery. The recovery is slow and the fatigue is TERRIBLE.

    When/How to buy new clothes

Update: I initially started this post WAY back. I've gone from a 3x/24 to a M/10! What I did was buy some stuff at thrift stores, and then a few things in stores/online, just enough for a week's worth of clothes in any one size. I have found that I can actually wear things a BIT big, so for example, the pants I just bought (one pair of casual pants and one pair of jeans) are a size 10, but today I am wearing size 14 dressier pants, which are loose, but since they're stretchy, they don't look ridiculous. Also, I have some shirts in every size from S-XL that fit. I had all sorts of hopes to get everything from thrift stores but in the end, I am too picky for that. I have been donating my "bigger" clothes on Buy Nothing or if no one in my neighborhood wants them, I donate them to the thrift store. Mostly I'm able to give my bigger clothes to my neighbors on Buy Nothing, so they are not going in a landfill just yet!

    Gaining Weight after 3.5 years

most of us gain 10-20 lbs from our lowest weight sometime during year 3. I sometimes attend Unjury's virtual support groups, and they had a really interesting dietitian on a couple of weeks ago. She said almost everyone gains at least 5% of their lowest weight, and her clinic doesn't even consider it regain unless the person gains more than 15% of their lowest weight. Anything less than that (i.e., less than a 15% gain) is just normal settling....so that's more or less equivalent to the 10-20 lbs that I mentioned. so, in other words, your "regain" is normal - just the normal rebound that the vast majority of us experience after hitting bottom. Of course, you can always lose weight again by cutting calories - but if your body is now at it's "setpoint", then it'll be a struggle to take it off and keep it off - BUT...it can be done if you're willing to put in the work.

    Kept it Quiet?

I decided to talk with my husband and children about it, my mother and my brother. Some online friends I have met through my business . I lost 30 in the first 2 months of my 6 month program. My mom, brother and husband are on board, but all asked me to reconsider and loose it naturally. I was a skinny person with crazy high metabolism until 30, received medical attention for anxiety and severe depression and poof, weight gain constantly since. I am 41 now. Always was active and was labeled medically induced morbidly obese. I have been to ‘diet doctors’ nutritionists, doctors, tried getting off the medication and gain plus all the time. I was literally doing one meal at dinner and ‘testing’ shakes and purée phase foods for the other meals. Because honestly I am terribly anxious for the liquid diet. Which I happened to start yesterday. I in total lost 50, but gained back 5-10 in a nervous dip and adding back to 3 meals. Trying the yogurt recipes (I gain with yogurt 😢) My doctors still want me to stick with the yogurt. I do know that carbs are my gains. I have my RNY scheduled May 10 and can’t wait. It’s not a secret, but I am not trying to tell anyone because it’s my body and my decision. Judgements are always made and sometimes (always) my family (aunts uncles cousins) can be completely rude. All in all, I am doing this for myself and my children, I want to live and annoy them for a long time and love the families they ave. So don’t worry about anyone else. Immediate support group small~ All I need 🥰

    Leg soreness?

Hey, y’all! I’d been walking (more or less) 5 minutes every hour since surgery on 4/20. Yesterday I was busy with work, so I didn’t quite make it hourly. However, I did increase my time in the walks that I did take; 10 minutes up the ramp of my parking garage to the top floor (one floor up.) So today my legs feel really sore and tired. No fever, no hot spots, just aches. Taking my daily blood thinner shots on top of the movement. Should I be worried?! Would anyone recommend compression socks? Other relief? I made the stupid decision to rewatch Dr. Death this week, so now I’m super paranoid about clots and pulmonary embolisms lol

  18. Hi there totally new here and just looking for peoples experience, I am post op 10 days post gastric bypass, just wondering if I am eating too much or too little, just scared I am messing thing up ; so currently I am eating around 4- 5 yoghurts a day and around 2-3 cups of coffee with almond milk and 2 soups a day. All the yogurts are low sugar and low fat ie when I look at the calories for everything except my soups I get around 600-700 calories a day this is without counting the soups as they are home made with carrots, chicken etc. Pre surgery I was 131 kg - 288.8 pounds , and day of surgery I was 124 kg - 273.4 pounds and now I am 117 kg - 257.9 pounds (10 days post op). (I am 184 cm height - 6.03 feet) I have not eaten any additional protein as I getting that with the soups , and will call my dietician for follow up to make sure I am doing things right, and also I feel hungry a lot however I think its just because I am dead bored with the food, not sure if this is normal or not. Looking forward to hear other peoples experience. Many thanks

remember it's to make surgery safer by shrinking your liver...you can do anything for 10 days! It'll be over before you know it and you will be on the other side 😊

    Weight gain

a 10-20 lb rebound weight, usually during year 3 (although it can be earlier or later for some) is EXTREMELY common. A dietitian who gave a presentation on one of Unjury's virtual support groups a couple of weeks ago said they don't even consider it regain until you gain more than 15% of your lowest weight (so for you, that would be slightly over 15 lbs). Under that, and it's just your body settling in to a weight it feels comfortable at. you can always lose weight again by cutting your calories - although weight loss is a struggle for those of us at or near a normal BMI.
  22. Hello Feb 2022 group, since we are sharing here I go. I have lost 53 pounds but most of them on the first month, the last month I lost only 10. Almost 3 months PO I cannot eat eggs, bread, pasta or tortillas, I used to love tacos and I have not enjoyed one during the last 3 months. 2 weeks ago I started having salads and I love that I can have a decent amount. I feel full very quickly still half of a cup of solid food sometimes less, I had to travel recently for work and family and during that time it was easy to drink water but now that I am back at home I am struggling again I can do a little more than 32 oz. still pushing it. I am not a fan of protein shakes but try to do some smoothies with fruits and protein dust ( eww) since I know I am not getting all the protein I need from food. I felt bad for a few days and ended up in ER, I got a CT and endoscopy and everything seem to be fine but I am suffering from reflux, I took some pills for it and now I seem to be able to control it with not eating too close to bed time, reclined bed etc. I wish you all to be successful fast or slow however our bodies decide they want to go.

Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.

i just found this in a quick google search. It is not known how safe or how unsafe these products are. September of 2019 saw a rash of nearly 500 cases of respiratory illness linked to vaping throughout the US, according to the CDC, which reports symptoms to include cough, chest pain, nausea, shortness of breath, vomiting or diarrhea. As of September, six had died of "vaping lung disease." The exact component of vape fluid had not been identified as of that time, but illness seems to affect users of both nicotine and cannabis e-cigarettes. “While this investigation is ongoing, consider not using e-cigarette products,” the CDC advised as of Sept. 6. They further state, regardless of the ongoing investigation, youth, young adults and women who are pregnant should not use e-cigarette products

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

I have the same feelings. Every day eating is painful and frustrating, but I can fit in a size 10!!! So, I go back and forth with whether I'm happy I did it.

Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.

Consuming 5-10 calories and a couple grams of sugar (to me) far outweighs the tertiary effects of inhaling any chemical substance into your lungs. All of my surgeons and doctors support an edible but do not support or condone smoking of any kind. If you're okay with that risk, then by all means, toke away!
