Hi everyone. I just joined the forum because I'm going out of my mind thinking about my upcoming surgery. I have been looking into weight loss surgery for the better part of eight years, with every issue life can throw at me popping up along the way. Then, all of a sudden, in the space of two or so months, every roadblock seems to fall away, and the team at the University of Chicago has offered me a date in less than two weeks for the DS procedure. I am such a combination of excited and scared, motivated and freaking out! It's hard to describe, but I know many of you have experienced the same thing. I am having weight loss surgery because I would like to avoid the many problems lurking around in my gene pool (diabetes, MS, blindness, etc.) and I would like to live a long and happy life. But I feel like I had convinced myself that it would never happen, and now that it is happening so fast, it's so thrilling and scary at the same time! I'd love it if any of you could share any stories you might have relating to your pre-surgery experience. I'd also appreciate any advice. I've got all my vitamins ordered (from Bariatric Advantage) and I've got all of my pre-op requirements done as well.

It can't be just me

I agree!!!! Eating is an exhausting process...remember being excited about meals?? The anticipation? Lol then the guilt... Coupled with health issues is why we can all relate and had the surgery. I soooooo miss drinking fast. Nothing like getting that thirst instantly quenched. -

average weight loss your first monthout
nearperfectmess replied to tracyh1110's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's really hard to say what any "average" weight loss may be. My goal for myself was 40 lbs lost by the time I went on vacation in July. Well, I'm 5 weeks post-op tomorrow and I'm down 44.2 lbs today since surgery (I lost 28 prior to). And I only just started adding exercise on this past weekend (I mean, I've walked A LOT as they instructed). I'm struggling with the exercise, but that's probably because I want to do too much too fast to combat the skin sagging and such. I have to step back and realize the 30 mins on the treadmill/bike/elliptical is good and it'll get easier to add more over time. Listen to you body and you'll be fine. My Mom had it done as well, and she said she lost VERY slowly at first, but it all added up. I'm actually worried that I'm losing too much, too fast. (And that I'm going to panic when the first major stall happens). -

Good luck ! Please keep up up-to date on your healing process. I'm so curious as to how fast the healing begins -
It's referred pain from your diaphragm, an agitated phrenic nerve. So relaxing the muscle (and the nerves) will help it. If you have someone who can give you a neck massage (a strong one!) and get the muscle to relax, that'll help. Does liquid tylenol help? I've also read of people who, if they lie on their sides and raise their left arm up over their heads it helps. mine fortunately just hurt if I breathed too fast (like when I moved LOL) so try to keep your breathing slow and even and not too deep, see if that helps relieve it. Don't pant though or mess w/your breathing too much (Deep breathing is good to keep your lungs clear!) I mean just mess with it a little to see if it will calm down.

I was wondering who has tried this, and what they thought. I was told it's better for you less cal. etc. But off just fast scanning It looks like its not all that much better or am I reading this wrong? Tastes great though! I really like it and that bad! http://www.ciaobellagelato.com/pdfs/cb_nutritional.pdf#search='gelato%20nutrition'

I get hiccups when I am full or if I have eaten too fast. It is a sign that I need to slow down or stop eating. Otherwise, no problems.

Oh god, drooool, I havent had an IT in about 20 years. Mmmmmmm. I can eat pancakes, VERY slowly and just one. I have it with just a bit of maple syrup when I make them for the kids, skip the butter. I'd actually say that bacon is more fattening than a plain pancake, but then I'm the lone carb crusader on this board, lol. I will never ever ever give up carbs and I'm nearly at goal so if you like pancakes, one in a while wont hurt you. However - if you're very newly banded and never eaten them banded before, you're braver than I am to try them for the first time in public. I would actually cook myself one prior and test it out. I've always handled all bread and the like fine, but it can block me up and cause a bit of discomfort if I hoe in too fast. And I actually agree TOTALLY with Cam. Its not all about deprivation and saying no to everything, its about learning to handle and live with food and conquer your emotional reactions to it. Its like worrying about wasting what you cant eat in a restaurant - the healthy, functional thing is to simply not care about what you dont eat, waste is waste, whether you shove it in when you're not hungry, take it home and eat it when you can fit it in, go through elaborate processes to be able to order and pay for smaller portions etc. The aim is to just not care, not come up with a way to make that food worth the money you paid for it. And in the same vein, its not all about sticking to a program for the rest of your life, its about being able to go out to eat, ordering what you genuinely fancy and being able to eat it till you're satisfied and then stop, not pig out and not eat for the rest of the day or do 20 hours of exercise to make up for it, or really wanting the pancake, but having the eggs and going home and eating cake when you should have just had the pancake in the first place. All of us like different levels of discipline and like to diet in different ways but for me, I just think the thing is not to "diet" at all. I havent found the band to be about dieting, I've found it to be a tool that's helped me achieve those attitudes I've just mentioned.

My name is Roger, I am 45 years old, happily married with 4 young kids. I am starting to write this blog from a hotel room, where I'm waiting for my surgery on Monday. I am here alone, never told anyone around me as i know what their reaction could be. I want to write about everything, my questions, my concerns, the background for my decision, my pre-op preparations, my cheats on the pre-op preparations, and everything else. To start, my journey as started on the left foot. I was supposed to have my surgery last week with Dr. Aceves, who died tragically in a car accident. I got the news 4 days before my surgery - what do I do now, I said to myself. I selected Dr. Aceves after very careful consideration and months of mental preparation. The two weeks prior to the original date of the surgery were a nightmare. I couldn't sleep, eat or think. How could I cut a perfectly working organ voluntarily, I asked myself. What is I discover a few years down the road the I have made a terrible mistake? I couldn't come to terms with my decision, and bhaaammm, after all my thinking and endless self-debating, after convincing myself I'm doing the right thing...he died. What a mental turbulence that had cause me. worse than my own nightmares. Why surgery? I am successful in life, I have a great job, great wife, great kids, but I hated the way my body looks back at me from the mirror. I am tall, 6'4", but my belly was big. Over the years, I have tried every single diet on this planet...pills, liquid diet, starvation diet, prepared food, voodoo stuff and all the Atkins variations. nada - lose some gain some. I started just feeling heavy - no impact on health yet, but I knew this will come unless I lose weight. Just thinking about it, I gained 20 more pounds, peaking at 275 pounds. This is it - no more. Two friends went with sleeve and one of them asked me that I simply need to choose - a sleeve surgery or heart bypass surgery - my call. Questions questions questions This is an elective surgery and to me...I had to be completely nuts to voluntarily cut my stomach. I had tons of questions - will I have normal life after this? Will I enjoy going out; will I be able to drink water fast enough when I run or play basketball, are there any major side effect...sorry for the bluntness but I heard of people who frat unexpectedly after the surgery. I asked and asked and asked on all wed sites, got the help of other sleevers, and heard their stories. the answer of most people was that yes...my life will absolutely change, but the change will be for the better... How did I select my surgeon? After months of research, I short listed three surgeons based on all the feedback I collected from sleevers. I am a new-age patient. I need to see YouTube videos and asses the skills of the surgeon. I could not make the decision based on word-to-mouth. I had to actually assess the skills myself. One Doctor for example demonstrated his technique and the liver always covered the stomach, he didn't lift it like the others, and half of the time I thought he is simply guessing where he makes the cuts of the stomach. That was a no-go. Right from the beginning I knew that Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Alvarez were two leading surgeons. I didn't go to Dr. Ortiz because his place was not a hospital, and initially I selected Dr. Aceves due to his superior success rates. But after his tragic accident, I had to quickly select a new surgeon. I went back to my original list, and added a few more, like Dr. Illan and two others - but I couldn't find any video of a live surgery. Dr. Alvarez however, made the best impression. He is articulate, knows the material, explains things very clearly and generally made the best impression. He knows his stuff. Hotel alone... Yes, I didn't tell my wife. She loses sleep over our cat's irregular bowel, i just can't think what would go inside her mind, if she knew I'm about to cut my stomach. I waited for her to go on a trip to her parents in Boston and went to a "business trip". I wish she was here....but I also know I made the right choice I actually haven’t told anyone. I don't need anyone getting into my belly - we have a huge social friend, and I do not want to become the talk of the neighborhood. I am doing this for myself, and want to do this journey alone. Don't get me wrong, my wife knows I am planning this, as I shared it with her, I just never shared the exact date. I will tell her when I am back, after it's all said and done. Pre-Op Diet....arrr. I am not a huge person. My BMI is 34. I couldn't get insurance approval, so I went with the self-pay option. The first Doctor (Dr. Aceves) told me that I do not need any pre-op diet. The second one, asked for a 5 day liquid diet. I had no problems doing it for three days, but I just had to have a food funeral and ordered today chicken wings. Good bye wings, good bye spicy food...perhaps I will meet you again in one year, but I am opting for something different for now. I will not tell my doctor that I cheated :-) I am finishing my first entry of the blog here. I will continue to update.

What would you change in your banding journey?
Alexandra replied to Fauxnaif's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is a really great question, indeed. I don't know that I would change anything, except possibly to have waited longer for my first fill. I wasn't really hungry, I was losing weight slowly, but the holidays were coming and I really wanted to have some help avoiding my annual 10 lb gain. So I had a fill 8 weeks after surgery. The only reason I say now that I might have waited is that now there seems to be a growing body of evidence that the more slowly people get fills the better they tend to do in the long run. This is an informal impression my doctors have gleaned from their practice (which is large), but I can see the sense in it. And since my goal was never to lose weight fast, but to lose weight permanently, I think I might have agreed to wait had they made that suggestion back then. Beyond that, I'd always say "exercise more, eat healthier" but that's got nothing to do with my banding journey, per se. That's just about life. :peep: -
Today is the day ! Surgery day

The best of luck to you. Mine is quickly approaching, so I almost know how you feel. Hoping for a fast recovery for you. -
Shame girl, thinking of you! It's rough the first days. But time moves fast and before you even know it you are 5 months post op like I am. I do not know how that happened! Stay strong and take it one step at a time
-
It's different here than in the US from what I can gather. Dr Fred puts you on a 2 week pre-op diet that is based on food in the quantities that you'll be eating in the long term post-op. I only did 10 days pre-op as I was in holiday just before. I lost 10lbs! Here they prefer you to use food as opposed to shakes and Protein powder except in the early days. Post-op I followed Dr Fred's detailed diet and only used Slim-Fast where I was told to. Now, at not quite 5 months post-op, I don't use shakes of that type at all. Occasionally I'll have a Protein Bar that I get in Boots - called ProMax I think, in the diet section, but I haven't had one for around 6 weeks now.

Having a hard time accepting my decision to get banded
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! commented on Kelli1016's blog entry in Kel1016's Blog
Our stories are very similar! Like you, I have been "the fat girl" my entire life. I can remember being as young as 5th grade and obsessed with how huge my thighs were. I remember being teased for being big all through junior high. I remember going shopping with my girlfriends in high school and being so ashamed because I couldn't wear anything at the "normal sized" shops they went to. I did date as a teen but my self esteem was always awful. When I hit college, like you I decided to own being a fat girl. I had more self confidence and I decided I didn't give a rip if someone did like me for me- fat and all. ...but then I had my first child at 21 years old...and got bigger and bigger. Over the years I ballooned up to over 400 pounds. Any self esteem I ever had was long gone and my health was seriously tanking fast. My best advice is to let go of that "fat girl" mentality. Too often we wear it like a suit of armor not a badge of courage. We're teased and tormented so severely we try to muster up all this false bravado to shield ourselves from being hurt yet again. It is simply wonderful you're doing this for your health- but you have to be ok with the fact there's nothing wrong with doing this to look good, too. You're not letting society or anyone else "win" by getting the Lap Band and losing weight. YOU are winning for taking control of your health so you can live a long, happy, healthy life with your husband. Best wishes to you -
I make my own shakes (I am on the regular diet but I make shakes/smoothies twice a week for breakfast for convenience sake). This morning I had 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt, 1/4 cup skim milk, 1 tablespoon vanilla Protein powder, 1/4 cup frozen diced strawberries, and a packet of stevia. Yesterday I didn't have the strawberries, instead I added some vanilla extract. 22 grams of protein. I tried the Slim Fast brand low carb shakes- OMG awful!!!!! I'll stick to my own- cheaper and better tasting by far! I had to add that in the days right after my surgery I used no sugar added Carnation instant breakfast- it's not bad- I thought it tasted like chocolate milk, but only 13 grams of protein including the milk. -Kendra

Hi jabs i will be 3 years out on May 15th, my new birthday, wish it was 35 years. as of today I'm 97 lbs lighter. Never had any regrets, not an instant. Nothing I can't eat or drink, except for extremely sweets, i can only have one [/url]chocolate, not half a box. i was pre diabetic, needed a knee replacement but now no problems with my knee and i have a clean bill of health. My favorite thing is being able to cross my legs in addition to wearing flattering clothes. Be sure to get your Protein or you may risk anemia so I have a Protein Drink each day, i can only palate Premier Protein at 160 cal and 30 grams of protein. You can also eat greek yogurt at 12g and you will have a good head start. I don't worry about calories anymore. if i feel like eating anything i go for it but in very small quantities, kids meals are too much but the toys are cool. I give them to the food bank. I love Soups but still hates salads. by the way if you want to fell full for free, have a free meal by eating samples at costco I'm usually full before the lasts samples. Remember, liquids first but you will learn. Sometime my eyes are bigger than my stomach but my stomach always wins. I usually share with whoever i am eating with or order an appetizer which is always too much so i eat lots of leftover. If you like to drink alcohol, be careful you get drunk real fast on very little and sober up kind of fast. I no longer like wine just light beer but very occasionally now as i was developing a habit. I now have tea in the evening as i realized i was just thirsty, i don't like Water. My only comp;location is eosophagal cramps that resemble a heart attack its noes, let common, the first time it happened i was at a hotel and had to call the emergency. The EMT tested me gave may an EKG and my heart was fine, i took a couple of Tums and it went away. I was lucky to have a dr who recognized the condition right away soI now i take an omapremazole every day, i tried nexium but it doesn't work for me. Don't expect to look great naked, actually pretty creepy but i don't want plastic surgery at my age and except for my hubby, nobody else sees me that way. I have a wonderful husband who want to see me healthy and happy. i do look great in jeans. congratulation on your decision to live longer

Well, I have survived the first week postop. Gas pain, too tight band and liquid diet. All of it. I am pretty excited that I am under 1 week now of liquids only. I go back to work onthe 29th and am starting mushies then, I don't care if the darn book says the 30th! Today is better. I was able to swallow my pill without it sitting in my throat for an hour and liquids are going through my band with very little pain. These are all good things. I still seem to have alot of bloating since my pants are tighter around the waist then they were preop and I've lost 10 lbs since then! I know this too will pass. Patience, Patience. I was in town at a convenience store for about 5 minutes and saw 3 women get out of separate cars and all were clearly obese or morbidly obese. I felt sad for them and I didn't even know them. I know they have felt the same pain I have. It also strengthened my resolve that I have done the right thing and will see the rewards soon enough. Slow and steady! I picked the turtle to be my ticker marker so it will remind me every time I look at it that this is a long war with many battles and I have to just keep trudging on. Still having some port site pain, mostly from the unfill I had on Monday. That was pretty uncomfortable and I have some new bruising there. Incisions all seem to be healing well. I'm feeling pretty good except for bending over is still a little painful. Mostly I'm bored. So much I want to do and I have so much energy. Now I can't really use it. I am signing up at the gym tomorrow and will start working out when I go back to work next week. I know I won't be able to do much at first but again, baby steps. Overall, I'm feeling better and am hoping the worst of it is behind me and the next 6 days of liquids goes VERY FAST!! Congrats to bashful1269 who was banded today. Welcome aboard!!

Ah, September! The renewal of hope is in the air as kids go back to school with the promise of straight A's and I with my promise of exercise!! I didn't like the pressure I felt last month with the 'specific' goals I outlined and it made me feel bad when I didn't measure up exactly. So I'm going to relax them just a little bit and break it down into Cardio sessions and Weights sessions, like many of the other Violets do. 8 - Full Body Strength Training Sessions 10 - Cardio Sessions of at least 45 mins. -------------------------------------------------------------------- This book is so awesome! This Year I Will.....How to Finally Change a Habit, Keep a Resolution, or Make a Dream Come True by MJ Ryan. I plan to buy several for Christmas gifts this year. I'm almost finished with it and when I am, I'll start it over again. Awesome. 8/30 - Got back to the gym today after my little sebbatical and it felt good. I actually had a hard time getting my heart rate UP! Could the quitting cigarettes only 11 days ago improved my performance that much already?? I did quit hacking and couging by day 3. Hmmmmm. Cool. 9/1 - Tried the rowing machine today! I like it!!! I especially like the idea of a total body workout on one machine and in less time. Was getting soooo bored with the other cardio machines. time to play racquetball!! 9/2 - Rowed again today for about 15 minutes and then the elliptical for 10 mins. I feel like I've lost something...can't seem to get a good workout in. Maybe I need to build up to it. 9/8 - Just had one of the most stressful weeks of my life and it was HARD to get thru it without cigarettes, food or booze. I think this Chantix is messing with my moods too....I can't wait to get off of it, but I'm not nearly ready. Exercise went by the wayside again this week. I think I got 3 workouts in. Pitiful. Discovered a 'fitness test' on the stationary bike computer and it said that I have low-very low O2 volume. I should have never taken that test. Here I felt like I was getting into pretty good shape and this computer tells me I suck. Well, whatever....I'm fast approaching 30# gone and that feels great!! 9/20 - Got back from a week in Vegas and California - ate anything I desired while there and gained 2#. Lost it all by Thursday. Yea! Got back to the gym last night by doing 30 mins on the stationary bike and reading. that worked out nicely - the time flew by! Scale at 186.6 Day 31 of not smoking!

I am in the same boat sister with the exception that I have minimal health issues associated with my obesity.....and I don't want any either which is why I have elected the surgery. I am scared too. I am already mourning the loss of my relationship and the joy I had with food however it is that relationship that got me where I am today. We will both get through this and fast forward one year when we are thinner and healthier we will why we did not do it sooner. Hang tough and fight through those doubts. You got this. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Eating fast is my main issue. Idk if mine stems from my old food addiction but I tend to have a problem making my meals last more than 15mins. I think I just get too excited to eat, it doesn't cause me to overeat but I do think it's part of my mental process. Maybe yours has to do with that too? There may be something we both have to address mentally with our relationship with food.

First Nutrition Counseling Session
faemystique replied to LalaTaylor's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I am due for my third visit. This month I slid back into old habits. My Nut basically wants me to learn to be better at habits and behaviors that will aide me in my journey to lose and keep off the weight. I was great the first month, wearing my BodyMedia Fit Link armband, using MyFitnessPal app to log all my foods and calories. Then a week before my May appointment I quit doing my logging, and then also haven't started up again until this week. I had a f/u visit with my psych doc who did the eval and placed me on some medication. I expected to discuss my issues with her that day but she just asked some simple questions and doubled my dosage and sent me out the door, it happened so fast I didn't think to ask about therapy actually occurring. I need to make sure she has me in for a session not just med management for this next appointment. I got my chest xray done and my abdominal ultrasound done. I need my upper GI test done, some labs, finish the nut supervised 6 months diet and then I can submit. I hope to submit for approval in late September/early October. I am not losing weight yet. I need to seek out support groups. That is pretty lacking. I also think I need to attend some Overeaters Anonymous groups. My husband has been out of state all month and he is such a good support to me for exercising and getting out to do things. And watching my diet. I didn't realize what a big help he is for that until he was gone. I feel really down about going right back to old habits, I feel like I am failing myself and if I can't do this 20-30 pound weight loss prior to surgery how can I expect myself to be successful post surgery??? sighs... I am trying to get back on the wagon of logging calories and exercising. Anyone want to help me and be a support buddy hit me up! -
