The serious conversation "oh snap"
catwoman7 replied to Betty1971's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't think it's going to make much, if any, difference. The sagginess is due to overly stretched out, damaged skin that isn't likely to bounce back. But it depends somewhat on how long you've been overweight, too - I knew there was no hope for mine bouncing back regardless of how fast or slow I lost weight. I just wanted to lose as much weight as I possibly could during the "honeymoon" period, since I knew it would get harder after that (and it does...) -
^^ If there was any one single maintenance-after-weight-loss tip I would wholly advocate, it is this. Having an established “red-line” as a warning to re-evaluate your habits works to keep you on track (or get back on track). This red-line doesn’t have to be a number on a scale: it can be a certain size of jeans, number of km’s run without feeling winded, body fat percentage, etc. Nobody gains 25 pounds so fast that they didn’t see it coming. Nor will they go up 2 pants sizes overnight. You’d have to get to +5lbs or current tight pants first. It is so much easier to drop those 5lbs earlier vs the 25lbs later if one is keeping track.

Nerves are getting the best of me....
AZhiker replied to lukeyo1981's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The worse part about endoscopy is a little prick for the IV. Then it is a short nap, the procedure is done, and you get breakfast. I've had several done, and it really is no big deal. The actual procedure takes all of 5 minutes. The doc needs to see what he/she will be dealing with. I had an undiagnosed hiatal hernia which was then repaired at the time of my bypass surgery. The cardiology is also just a matter of procedure. They may want to do a stress test, which may involve an IV and medication to make your heart beat fast, as if you were on a treadmill. It's not exactly pleasant, but doesn't hurt, and the medication wears off very quickly. For me, there were abnormalities that needed further investigation, all the way to an angiogram. I was really nervous about that, but it showed that my coronary arteries are clear! I feel like a dodged a bullet with decades of obesity, and it really gave me so much more positive hope that I wasn't waiting to drop over from a heart attack. It was a GOOD thing and I am thankful for having done it. You just have to tick these items off. You deserve to know what you actual health profile looks like, and of course , your surgical team needs to know this, too. Just keep copies of EVERYTHING! Go to medical records after the procedures and get your own copies or ask your doctor for copies. It's good to have these in your own personal file as reference points for the future. And anything like a cardiac clearance, psych clearance, nutritional eval - KEEP the copies! Doc offices have been known to lose these things and when you have a copy it will same time and frustration. Take things one step at a time and you will be fine. -
Banded 10 Years Ago..... considering revision surgery
Katiebal_Lecter replied to Skip111178's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded back in 2008, and lost 120 pounds over the following years. In 2016 I got a piece of broccoli stuck and slipped my band. My original surgeon’s office wouldn’t let me revise and said since I was so successful with the band then we should try to get it working again. Well fast forward three years, never got the band working again, the pain while eating was worse, I had bad acid reflux, and I regained 50 pounds. A different surgeon in the same office said she would revise to gastric bypass after removing my band. She’ll try to do it all in one surgery. She said she would only do the GB in lap band removal cases because with the scar tissue from the first surgery it wasn’t safe to make the new stomach the way it should be with the sleeve. So December 17 (fingers crossed no COVID delays) I’ll finally be getting the band removed and GB done. Good luck with your decision!! -
Heads up, it will be up and down. 12-14 a month is actually pretty high! depending on your starting weight etc, you can’t realistically expect that every month. Granted some people do shed weight at a fast clip but that seems like the exception vs the rule. (I’m looking at you @ms.sss ) lol I was a “slow loser”. I just looked up my history. I was 204 on my surgery date 8/13/18 and 188.6 10/01/18. I was down 16 pounds after 48 days. Looking back at my tracking, I stopped weighing myself for 2 weeks! I don’t remember doing this, but I’m sure I took a break because it was driving me nuts. Just like you I was eating 500-600 calories a day, it just came off slower than I had hoped or expected. I had a few months when I only lost a few pounds! A good month for me was 6-8 lbs. I’m a stubborn person, it just made me dig my heels in harder and I got to my goal weight by a year and surpassed it a few months later. I never cheated, I wanted this too much to fail. I did get frustrated but I got there. This is my long winded way of letting you know to keep your expectations realistic. Even on 500-800 calories a day and doing everything “right” you can lose slowly. Our metabolisms defy logic sometimes! You will lose the weight, just might not be in a timeframe you’re hoping for. You got this, good luck. I think the show 600 lb life messes with our expectations.

Hey there. Just checking in to wish you luck. Tomorrow’s the day!!!! I think you got in under the wire. I’m hearing rumors of surgeries scheduled for next week being canceled. I just had my class (I only have three left?!!! Time flies!!!) and someone in that class knows two people who had surgeries scheduled for next week.... which they say were canceled. But the ladies running the class didn’t hear anything about shutting down elective surgeries and they were just in a meeting. So I don’t know. I crossing my fingers they don’t but the covid cases are going up so fast. I can easily see newsom issuing another shut down order.

LOL!!! My college boyfriend was obsessed with the McRib! Back in the day when we could eat fast food, and still have 6 pack abs. Miss that metabolism!!

Ok I have been busting my ass Since June of 2019 to get healthy - So for you starting out there is a end to the journey where you can have a little pleasure in life. So yesterday Kids came in with a surprise for me. They no I was a fast food junky! I must have eaten a 100 of these over the years. So I looked at it and new i was going to pay for this big time. Cut it in half and over 45 minutes got it down, It was good but I realize now you can enjoy food or you can abuse it. Other half went to my lab who has worked out with my this whole journey .

Post Sleeve Question
Mr Alley Gator replied to Smitty74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are on the same track as I was as a male. Yes stalling is going to occur - I found intermit fasting and slamming the calorie count around to break the stall -
Worried that doctor made my pouch too big?
Coexister replied to Coexister's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had revision due to bad reflux that was causing damage to my vocal chords but I also never reached my goal weight with the sleeve. I am hoping to reach 145 with this revision. I am currently at 154 and seem to be holding steady and am hoping for another drop. ; ) I was about 173 pre-surgery before the pre-op diet. I am now eating regular foods and am now realizing that there is a restriction and that if I do eat too much, it hurts really bad. I have had a few episodes with dumping however my body doesn't throw things up. I think it's because of the hiatal hernia repair with mesh that keeps foods from coming up. I wish I could throw up as it would be easier and provide relief at times but my body was always one that to hold things down and just make me suffer. So instead, I get the sweats and the pains and just suffer for a period of time. I am pretty much noticing that there is no indication of "about full" and that I am going to have to measure stuff and just stop before reaching the point the of no return. It seems to be all or nothing with this pouch. Once it realizes it is full, it's too late and I have overdone it. I probably need to learn to slow down even more and see if that works but I don't seem to get a signal to the brain that I am full? Maybe, I just never feel hungry and am just eating because I know I need too and so there is no signal because the head doesn't think it is hungry? I guess I need to take stock of what my body is feeling more and see where it goes. I am so terrified of drinking because it goes down so easy and I am always afraid that I am drinking too fast as being told that I could stretch my pouch by drinking to fast. So with that I am constantly trying to slow down my drinking and making sure I don't gulp down water. My bowels are definitely acting different and I am hoping they level out at some point and they get easier as well as I am currently living on Miralax twice daily to keep things smooth, LOL. This is definitely a different journey then the sleeve. Seems the sleeve was easier? -
18months post op- weight loss??
Mr Alley Gator replied to Loopyjane12a's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Switch you diet and do some Fasting - Drop one day below 500 calories and then the next bump to 900 then back down. Intermitted fasting during it also. Time to trick the body to start burning again -
2 week pre op how did you guys feel.?
Revised replied to melyg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I am so glad I came across this post. 7 day fasting on day 2. My head is pounding. Thought I could do without the Powerade. Definitely getting some tomorrow. Is it okay to take Tylenol during the fast? -
I agree with the other commenters. Go full liquid now. My wife and I both lost 17lbs by doing the full liquid diet for 2 weeks (3-4 protein shakes a day). Make sure to get 64oz+ of water a day as well as that helps to flush the kidneys and excess water weight. The other key is to make sure you get enough electrolytes. Soup broths, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello and flavored waters were our go to to really drop weight fast. We maintained about 500 calories a day and this helped us after surgery to lose weight fast as well.

The pre-op diet is really the best way to lose weight fast. I lost 15 or 16 pounds on the pre-op diet.

So you New WLS people Make it/ Survive
AlwaysDieting replied to Mr Alley Gator's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It was just my immediate family so wasn’t too big of a deal. I will say though I ate way too much. I never actually made a plate but had bites and tastes all day. I’m only 7 weeks post op and felt full and awful for a whole day after. I have to plan and measure my meals or I end up eating too fast then feeling ill. -

My nutritionist just said eat more protein, protein, protein. Help after Dumping still sick 20 hours later
NewWorldMe replied to NewWorldMe's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you. I thought it would last for a few hours. I am on day 2 and trust me I have learned my lesson. I cannot ingest anything except water and applesauce. I know it was not the spiciness as I have made spicier combinations and had no ill effects. I am just eating too fast. I am a tad frustrated with myself as I feel as if my weightloss was already slow and now it t may get slower. -
Intermittent Fasting really helped me shed the last 15 pounds. IF is a powerful tool. There are lots of threads here on IF, so do some searching if you are interested. Personally, I skip breakfast and start my eating window around noon. I stop by 8 pm at the latest. I also try to exercise during my fasting time, as it just revs up the fat burning. You've already used the stored glycogen in the liver and muscles, so the body starts into the fat stores.
-
Are you insulin dependent diabetic? I think this changes the game. I’m on an insulin pump, and the intermittent fasting doesn’t work well for me because of this. By 9-10am, my BS is in the 60’s and I need to eat. It’s annoying! I would definitely check with your doctor about what would be the right fit diet wise. Especially since you need to lose 20lbs, (which you will!!!) but they can keep you on track for success! As a diabetic, I’ve always found low carb to be my key. Now if I actually ate low carb for my life, I wouldn’t be overweight. A few of my friends who are also on pumps (but not really overweight) struggle with the same issues. you got this!!!!
-
That's good. I've seen alot of people do it. Thank goodness it's not one of those 2 or 3 day fasts lol although i tried the intermentent fasting last night and tried making it til noon today but my diabetes made me light headed so i had to eat a little halo cutie orange at about 11.. so hopefully that's ok lol
-
I can attest that intermittent fasting really WORKS. Whenever I need to shed water weight it's what I do
-
That's true, makes it way less daunting! I've actually started counting my calories and I'm actually staying at 1049 calories a day. And I'm starting the whole intermittent fasting thing from 8pm until noon the next day. I will definitely keep you posted! This app is so wonderful, I'm making so many new friends here😁

Help after Dumping still sick 20 hours later
GradyCat replied to NewWorldMe's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's temporary but a great reminder that you can't have spicy Indian chicken for a while or eat too fast. Eat slowly, slowly, slowly. Sip slowly, slowly, slowly. I think you'll be okay for a day or two without protein and you'll recover shortly.
