  1. Ok, so what I didn't say is that the very tiny amount that Silly can eat scares the crap out of me. And by her own admission, she hasn't even been doing as well as this right now. This represented a good day for her. I also missed that she was doing it in a 4 hour window initially. In my mind, with as little as she eats, there is no way or reason to cut IF to 4 hours. Cuz if she opened it to even an 8 hour window, she could probably get in 60-80g of protein per day. In actuality, you can eat more than her, but you try more toward vegetarian. And ditto that...scares the hell out of me. I think it's even scarier for you cuz you're doing this while using vegetarian sources of protein that do not have as much protein in it as lean meatacular stuff. So both of you are in my honest opinion playing with fire. But I'm just a lay person and don't know squat! I just thought I should not rain on her parade like I did your's cuz I felt so bad about raining on your parade and being a d**k (even though I don't have that appendage)...and also, on this thread, I'm trying not to be judgey. It's hard AF cuz we all know I'm an assh*t sometimes. I'm just trying to turn over a new leaf.
  2. Honey. I'm really glad to see you going back to embracing your vegetarian/vegan roots. I think you have to do you. I honestly do. Taking that other stress away is infinitely important!!! Maybe you will explore and find room there for some tiny bit of compromise--maybe things like eggs or fish -- and maybe not. Meh. You will figure it out. You are one smalrt cookie and you know your body best!!! (Maybe I'll lift a cup or two of Smooth Move in your honor today! )One thing I do know from reading the current studies--is that fiber, especially prebiotics/soluble fibers appear to be very important. Today. hehe--that could change tomorrow. And the other thing I know is your meals are beautiful!!! I'm a died in the wool omnivore--but I would love to join you at your table any day. GORGEOUS food. Love the marinade. I'm going to try that soon!!! Love that salad!

LOL FYE... No biggie. Perhaps you can start a thread for those who eat more vegetarian style eating. I do think it deserves its own thread, simply because there aren't enough of them. Hugs darlin' and aye... thank you for the awesome compliment!!! Let me know where you place it so I can pin it for you.
  5. It should def track workouts. And it would be nice if you could customize your own personal macro goals or have it do it for you based on your diet preferences. (Ex: someone following a reg bariatric diet will have different macros than someone following keto or a vegetarian etc) Reminders to enter food and workouts would be awesome too

    November buddies where are you?

11 days til I start mine ... I'm so glad my surgeon doesn't make you do a liquid diet he just puts you on a vegetarian low fat diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery...I'm still gonna cut way back with solids
  7. Last night I made a Peruvian style salad that my mother-in-law showed me many years ago. This is one of my hubby's favorite meals. It is just any kind of lettuce usually 2 or 3 kinds, radishes, carrots, celery, cabbage, tomatoes, basically whatever you want. Then about 4-6 cans of tuna and usually hard boiled eggs. The dressing is 6-8 limes squeezed over it with salt and virgin olive oil drizzled liberally over all. The traditional way to serve this is over a bed of yellow rice, but I served it over riced cauliflower lol. Anyway it is a very healthy dish that could easily be served with garbonzo or lentils beans instead of the tuna for a vegetarian dish.
  8. I'm glad you posted this. I'm 3 weeks post op today and not very hungry yet but my nut told me I need to focus on meals and teaching my protein goal. Sometimes I'm taking nausea meds just to try to get something more in between meals. I certainly don't want my hair to fall out or lose muscle but I'm not a big meat eater, I was even vegetarian for a few years and an getting real sick of meat, the protein shakes seem too "milky". IDK. I think I just need a little more time to adjust. I'm afraid that whenI go for 6 wk appt she's going to be upset that I didn't meet my goals. I don't think I met these protein and fluid goals before surgery though either. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Oh no, I'm so sorry you went through all that mess and drama!!! My prayer for you is a complete healing hon. The 30 lbs added while in the hospital has to do with all the fluids and meds they pumped you up with, so it doesn't count. 😊 I'm learning and going vegetarian. I've decided that I won't be cutting cheese out just yet, but I'm due time. But I did find a "cheese" sauce on Pinterest that is vegan. It's worth a try...I'll be trying t sometime and seeing if my kids could even tell the difference. I'll post the link here. I've even been researching on Dr Garth Davis, who is a bariatric surgeon and a vegan. He has his patients on vegetarian/vegan diets. Also wrote a book called Proteinaholic that I've been trying to find. My half priced bookstore didn't have it. Anyway, it's quite interesting. Been going plant based since before surgery, but finally kicking it off here for the most part. What I should have said in the beginning...WELCOME BATTY'S MOM!!!! 😊 We post quite regularly here and we keep each other encouraged and going. We're here for you! Glad to have ya on board.
  10. I'll muster up the courage to try my ring. Lol i started a new thread in the vegan/vegetarian forum for the Proteinaholic book. I'll be posting a lot there in regards to it. Come chime in and follow it. 😊 Enjoy dinner with your family!!!!
  11. Hi Cindy, So glad you posted and have to echo what Michelle and Alex said. Protein, protein potein. I do one egg and a vegetarian sausage for breakfast, often 2 chicken legs and 1/4 cup of cottage cheese for a lunch or dinner, I also do cheeseburgers with all the fixings but no bun, etc. I still like my carbs but find I eat them much less often. I might have a bread product every few days rather than several in one day. I do still allow one sweet chocolaty treat a day but I try hard not to eat beyond that. Best wishes to you and keep us posted, Teresa

Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

Long, but good day. I feel like crap, thinking about seeing a Dr. tomorrow. Sinuses are infected, and throat hurts, running fever, the usual crud everyone has. But I feel it dropping lower in my throat, headed for my lungs....then I get really sick. Son showed up, didn't speak for awhile to anyone, there were enough here that there was chaos, so it didn't matter, then he began doing just as I said and acting like nothing happen. Rick told him, it was a family holiday, and he was not going to bring anything up, but they WERE going to discuss what was said, there was a non commital kind of grunt, nothing more. Manda brought a guy she has seen a few times, but they went to school together, and his Mom and I did chemo together back a few years ago. He is a nice kid, but her polar opposite! She is very political, and he is the opposite, she is vegetarian, and he has yet to meet a veggie he likes he jokes! But he had his 2 year old daughter, and we all had fun. They fit in well. I think they are just friends, but who knows!!! Her vegetarian dinner was awesome she said, and everyone seemed to like the normal dinner. Ricks Mom and Dad refused to come to dinner, they went out for chinese, then come to visit us, and then to go visit his sister, but refused to eat with either of us. I do not have enough room for her family of 4 daughter, who are all grown with families too. I simply do not have the space, my home is little. And we were not invited there, she made it known, She actually made it a point to tell us we were welcome anytime, but it was too much for my family to be included too. Which is reasonable, but if I am gone, and take the kids, that leaves my Mom and Dad and brother alone.....and I can't do that. So if they want to pout and eat chinese, more power to them. I packed leftovers to take them tomorrow, as a gesture to say "here ya go, I don't feel too bad for you!" Rick was upset. Youngest DD did not make it til almost everyone was gone, but that is normal. I am glad it is all over, cleaned up, and I can do nothing. I normally love this holiday, and I did not even decorate my house this year! Bah Humbug!! LOL Well I am off to watch Breaking Bad, and go to bed, hoping I feel tons better tomorrow. Hugs to all of you, hope your days were wonderful!

    Any Regrets?

I am like Elfie, I love to cook, bake, and I love to eat. food Network is a great channel. I am also a cake decorator by trade among other things. I have learned to cook some really cool meals that agree with me and what I want for myself, substituting ingredients for a healthier dish, and cooking smaller pots so that I don't feel obligated to eat so much. I am almost entirely giving up on meat of any kind since any of the PB episodes I have had included meat. ( truth is I am a vegetarian at heart) When bake sweets I keep some for my family and give the rest away to the teachers at school and friends, Chiro office, massage therapist etc. So i still feel good cooking for others. I am becoming more satisfied seeing others enjoy what I cook vs the need to gorge myself on a tasty meal. I have also been watching Dr Oz a lot... I like how he explains what we are doing to our organs and his show and tell examples.... big time wake up call. My family watches together. I love how he spends time on weightloss issues and solutions and showes a typical plate and how it can be made better and with half or less of the calories. Ha Ha just the other day my freind took me and my 2 kids out to lunch for vietnamese food... I didn't order anything. I had some hot tea and then after that I picked off the veggies of everyones plate and was very satisfied. Now I am a really cheap date ;o) It was a relaxing meal. I enjoyed it. Like astrasmom, I am so happy I did this, I am more confident now and I wish I had done it sooner... I am thankful for today and my future. Betsie, it is fun meeting the challenge of altering a recipe, and very satisfying when your family loves it!

Two Non-Whey Protein Powders for Bariatrics

Following bariatric surgery, it can be difficult to get the required amount of protein following from foods alone, so many patients supplement their diets with liquid proteins shakes. While this may surprise you, people develop sensitivities or intolerance to traditional whey protein drinks and don’t even know it. I was one of them! It came to pass that I suffered extreme gas and bloating within 30-minutes of consuming a whey protein shake, even high-quality whey isolates. It took a while to this figure out because I’d consumed whey protein shakes for years without a problem. But I have observed that as time goes on, I develop more and more food sensitivities. As well, people have reported low-grade chronic head colds and stuffy nose or mucous-coated tongue after consuming whey protein shakes. These are possible symptoms of food sensitivities. Recently, I stumbled upon two really good protein powders that are not made from whey. They’re now staples in my bariatric pantry. Protein Powder That Repairs Joints, Too The first product is a collagen hydrolysate from Great Lakes — a powdered form of gelatin made from collagen with 11 grams of protein and 43 calories per tablespoon. I buy Great Lakes Unflavored Gelatin Collagen Joint Care on Amazon for about 50 cents per serving. Its also available to order from the Great Lakes gelatin website. Since I’ve been using this product as the protein base in my shakes, my knees no longer hurt when I run. I’m on my third container now and have noticed a major health improvement to my hair and nails, too. Read my full product review on MyBariatricLife.org. Protein and Amino Acids for Vegetarians and Vegans The other product is a vegan protein powder. It is low in carbohydrates and packed with amino acids. This is important because most plant-based proteins are void of certain essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce. So what this means is that in order to get all the amino acids that are needed, plant proteins will have to be strategically combined. Read my full product review on MyBariatricLife.org. Garden of Life has done all the work for us with their Raw Fit Protein for Weight Loss. Each scoop packs 28 grams of protein and 12 carbs. I buy Garden of Life Raw Fit on Amazon for around $30 for 16 oz. It’s also available at my local health food store. Living life larger than ever, My Bariatric Life

    Vegetarian or Vegan VSG ?

I don't know what you'd need to take Vitamins for that you wouldn't want to take extra anyway. Other than B12 (which really we should all be taking regardless), you can get everything from plant sources. And that's if you're vegan. If you're just vegetarian, it's even less of a problem.

    Vegetarian or Vegan VSG ?

I was always under the impression that Vegeterians or Vegans had their weight under control. Most that I have known have always givien me the my body is a temple speech. Or that I am unethical because I enjoy tastey animals. Could it be both alternative diets substitute animal products with sugar and high carbos? Just curious not being judgemental. Being honest, I can fully understand the benifits to being a vegetarian, but the vegans I know drive me nuts and dont have a clue when it comes to the science behind nutrition. I personally know a Vegan that is forcing her dog to be one also. Luckly her mom sneaks the dog meat.

    Any MAY sleevers???

my pre-op diet list only specifically says no potato, kumara or sweet potatoes. However I know sweet corn, pumpkins, and peas are also quite sweet. Maybe check with your nutritionist? Post surgery it will only be potatoes and sweet potatoes that I limit, most other veggies will be ok. I just picked up several cauliflowers on special to make some smooth cauliflower soup (which has a little sharp cheese and potato in it) to have frozen ready for liquids phase. Once I can have mushy foods I'll have my more usual chicken and vegetable soups - including the estimated 6g of protein in real homemade chicken stock, plus a scoop of bodie'z unflavored protein (15g) plus any soft bits of chicken I throw in, a simple bowl of chicken and veg soup will give me at least a third of my needed protein for the day. And I love my soups (as do my husband and son, haven't been able to convince my daughter yet) - the more fresh stuff included from my garden the better (herbs, garlic, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes mostly). I'll attach word documents of the cauliflower and cheese soup, and a nice-sounding mushroom soup that I plan to make for liquids phase. I"ll probably do a fairly thin basic butternut pumpkin soup with a little potato, carrot and cumin in it too. Cauliflower Cheddar Soup.docx Vegetarian Mushroom soup.docx
  19. Cool! I'm gonna make the PB cookies for Mr. F. this weekend. I'll freeze them to have on hand for him. Sometimes he will get a sweet tooth and want a little bite of something. I'm gonna try making it with the PB Slim powder and maybe egg whites (to see how low I can get em in cals!--cuz we don't need the extra fat around here). Might add a bit of WF Marshmallow Dip for the sweetener. I know...eek!!! I bet it is the fat...but magnesium tests are sometimes false. And the dried fruit thing just seems like...hmmm. Maybe magnesium? Why not try an epsom salt bath. Very relaxing. And you should totes get more fat, cuz of the vegetarian thing. Since we eat meat and avocados I think we have a diff situation. So funny we were posting about peanut butter at the same time this morning! Get out of mah head!!!! LOL.
  20. I got VSG on 12/17, so not two weeks just yet. I have had little to no problems. Sent home from the hospital a day early due to no need for pain meds and I was walking a ton. I did have two days at home where all I did was sleep on and off all day. By 12/23 I felt back to normal and was able to sleep and walk a few miles each day. I know I am lucky after reading through other's posts. My concern is what to eat. My doctor's office told me anything soft enough to cut with the side of a fork. I am vegetarian so meat is out. I am craving salads but they said not until month 2 at the earliest. Currently I am getting about 500 cal per day due to the protein shakes. Only a few bites of homemade runny refried beans and ricotta bake. Just cleaned out my closet for the second time. I lost 50 lbs prior to surgery and got rid of many clothes but more needed to go. I have also pulled out the sewing machine to help get a little life out of some of my shirts and skirts.

    The Official PORK Thread

Pork is wonderful if you are doing low carbs. I have a love/hate relationship with pork. My father cooked nothing but port for 1 whole week. Breakfast was bacon or sausage and for dinner he cooked pork chops, ribs, pig feet and to top it off pork roast. By the end of that week I was sick and disguested with pork. That was several years ago so I am over it now. But now my 12 year old wants to be a vegetarian. I wasn't buying that much pork because we primarily do turkey everything. Turkey burgers, spaghetti, chili and so on. Now I have to get my pork with an attitude, like I've done something wrong. I WANT A BIG FAT HAM FOR THANKSGIVING.....it's too big, I need help eating it....

    Pureed foods

Hey! I'm 4 days post op and trying to imagine whay pureed food is gonna feel like. I'm a vegetarian. I'm liking the idea of fat free refried beans with salsa but im also terrified to eat food again. I don't want to throw up or anything. Can anyone suggest vegetarian safe pureed foods for their new stomachs? So far I'm thinking refried beans, egg Salad pureed, hummus, tomato soup, red pepper soup, pureed broccoli cheddar, Silken tofu pudding....I would add protein powder to some of these too.. What else sounds good or worked for you? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Hello. I had a friend suggest this site to me. I'm 6 weeks out tomorrow and i have overall lost 11 lbs. From surgery til now.. The entire 6 weeks.. 11 lbs. The dr told me I was in the 1% that hasnt lost 20 lbs in the first 2 weeks. I follow the diet. I walk everywhere. I mostly eat just meats.. And vegetarian friendly alternatives. Last week my friend suggested i start measuring myself. I have lost 2 inches around the biggest part of my belly. But im not sure what to do anymore. I'm trying to keep on top of everything it just seems the more i try the less I lose. Does anyone out there have some much needed advice for me?
