  1. That is a good strategy about not watching the scale. I am considering doing the surgery in California. My Dr has 10+ years doing vertical sleeve and has done thousands. His experience is that his vegan/ vegetarian patients struggle with hunger and weight loss. He does not want people to rely on smoothies and shakes post-op and move to real food and get Protein from real food sources. He was the one who asked me to post here and seek experience of others and come up with a eating plan that I can enjoy and live with for rest of my life. He does work with a nutritionist and I will be seeing her in early Jan. I have found that if the nutritionist is not familier with vegetarian diet, they often do not have suggestions beyond tofu and Protein Shakes. I need at least some of my meals to be similar to what my family will eat. So rajma with greek yogurt and cauliflower subji is fine for me but I know I will not eat tofu and drink protein shakes every meal. I think you get that. I just want to eat smaller portions and feel full. So do you avoid rice and wheat completely - No rice or rotis? 85 lbs is just amazing and your approach and attitude to food seems so .so.. rational. Are you still losing or are you more in maintenance mode. Did you have any medical issues that got resolved with your weight loss?

    Any Vegetarian Sleevers? Spicy food?

Thanks!!! I LOVE curry but am just starting to make it, and learn. My brother is a vegetarian and with two of my closest friends being veg as well, I cook a lot of veg dishes! I will absolutely try your recipe and cannot wait-thank you so much!!! MMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Any Vegetarian Sleevers? Spicy food?

I hope you do! If you'd like to try a very mild, somewhat sweet authentic curry...try my Vegetarian (Vegan) Korma. It is hands down my most popular recipe on the blog. I think your kids would even like it! To thin it down, just add Water until you get to the consistency you'd like. To up the Protein, add legumes, Beans, paneer, tofu...even chicken or shrimp would be okay in it too. haha...sorry if I sound like a curry snob. The truth is, I kind of am. LOL Actually, I'm super passionate about Indian cuisine...and just want people to enjoy it. So often people tell me they hate curry. I ask them what kind they've had and they'll tell me something from the Chinese buffet or something made at home using curry powder. I've turned many of my friends (and complete strangers) from absolute curry haters into curry fanatics! I checked out your blog, by the way. Nice progress! I keep neglecting my VSG blog more than I should, but you've inspired me to update today!
  4. Hi Puja, My surgeon feels that without a solid Protein like chicken etc., that basically takes a long time to digest, I will feel hungry often. Did your hunger change after the surgery. I know that with removal of the fundus in the stomach, the main source ghrelin is gone, but I am not sure if in reality, that translates directly to lack of hunger. What was your weight loss like immediately post-op? I agree with you that it is a tool but lifestyle change is an issue. Like most vegetarians, my issue is that grains like rice and wheat is the main source of calories. I am OK with eating dal with Greek yogurt etc..but right now I feel too hungry after that.

    Anyone From India?

Neil, 3 months out with a 62 pound loss! That's amazing! Being a vegetarian in America will definitely be much easier than in India. There is a larger variety of Protein options available to you. Natural, low fat cheeses, greek yogurt, low fat milk, powdered Peanut Butter, protein powders, nuts, and soy products. All these items are staples you should have in your house, to provide yourself with daily variety! I'm in California. Good luck to you!

    Beyond meat!

    To google I go. Vegetarian,vegan!?
  7. I felt the same way. I tried so many other programs and diets, including organic/vegetarian as well. At the end of the day, I didn't stick to it and went back to old behaviors. I had my sleeve surgery done pretty recently and have no regrets. The weight will come off. I honestly don't feel hunger, sometimes in my head but it doesn't really matter because I can't really eat anyway. So, to answer your question, it works. However, my understanding is that you do have to adjust your lifestyle and make some lifelong decisions about nutrition and exercise in order to maintain the loss. I've seen others post here that they gained their weight back but I've also seen so many more success stories. One of my main concerns was addiction transfer. I made a conscious decision that after the surgery, alcohol would no longer be consumed by me. I haven't ever really been into booze beforehand but know that many patients do turn to alcohol and I don't want to be one of them. I also spent over 6 months in counseling to make sure I knew what I was in for mentally and had an established relationship with someone for after the surgery as well. Hope that helps!!
  8. I forgot to respond to your earlier questions: My nutritionist did have some hesitations with me being vegetarian, but only because she had not had any vegetarian patients. I discussed Protein options with her, and did lots of research on my own, to find out what foods were best for me in regards to a calorie to protein ratio, fat content, and carbohydrate content. Some doctors put a carb limit, but I did not have one. Initially, I was at 800 to 1000 calories a day, and am currently at around 1200 calories a day. I eat every 2.5 to 3 hours, without fail. I don't always feel hunger, but I do feel drained, and eating keeps up my energy. 9:30 - 1 boiled egg (7 gm protein) 12:30 - 2 ounces of low-fat cheese with some grapes, or some healthy crackers, or broccoli (14 gm protein) 3:30 - a Protein Bar (12 - 15 gm protein) 6:30 - Greek yogurt with granola (17 gm protein) 9:30 - lentils with veggies (8 to 10 gm protein) 10:30 - glass of milk (10 gm protein) I started out at 207 pounds, and am currently at 118 pounds. Good luck!

    Anyone From India?

Neil, you can do it! I'm vegetarian, and it has worked out just fine. It does take some planning. Where are you located?

You can gain weight after VSG.

As far as I know indefinitely...my urologist is giving my kidneys a month to "rest" and then I go in for more studies. I agree, I need to consult with my bariatric surgeon and get his suggestions. I'm going to research the vegetarian approach. I asked my kidney doctor about soy protein and he frowned on that as well. It's troublesome that's for sure.
  11. I've always been interested in becoming a vegetarian so it's awesome to hear it is possible! I'm only about 5 weeks out so if I did make the transition I would wait until I was at least 6 months but its something I have been thinking a lot about. I would imagine being vegan is very difficult with wls but seems vegetarian is doable yay!
  12. It is totally possible to be vegetarian!! I'm 16 months post-op, vegetarian, and very healthy! I don't do the fake meat stuff, but I do eat lots of natural foods including lentils, nuts, dairy, and eggs. It does take planning, however. I plan my entire day out in the morning, and pack my lunches. I also look at menus before going to restaurants, and call ahead if I need something special. I'm eating a meal as I write this: an apple with PB2 powder! 150 calories, 20 grams of Protein - all natural and low fat.
  13. Hi Indian. I am also vegetarian and am looking to get sleeved in February. I follow and Indian vegetarain diet, but try not to eat Indian food so much because it's very high in carbs: rice and rotis (like wheat tortillas), curries with potatos etc. Sorry to cross post, but I asked this somewhere else: how do sleevers tolerate spicy foods? Since I travel alot, sometimes my only food choices would be rice and spicy curries and sometimes there's no choice! Feel free to chime in what your thoughts about this are. I too was wondering what other good protien sources there are for vegetarians. Thanks...
  14. That would be lacto-vegetarian
  15. Hi I am totally a newbie and am looking into the sleeve as an option for me. I am a vegetarian, I travel ALOT and I eat Indian food frequently...rice and spicy curries. Does anyone have any advice about this? How do Sleevers tolerate spicy food. Thanks!
  16. A vegetarian avoids meat. A vegan avoids products that come from animals like egg, milk, or honey, even if the animal is not harmed.
  17. I thought a vegetarian could have dairy? Or is that the octo-tarian? Or whatever....I get them all mixed up.
  18. Thanks to you all. Chickpeas have too many calories. Thanks for your suggestions. One thing, I am a vegetarian but not vegan !
  19. If you are strict vegetarian, you ate likely not going to find a solution in the form of a whole unprocessed food. You can however get your Protein requirements filled by using alternatives such as : Hemp Protein powder TVP (textured vegetable protein) Soy Protein powders or RTD Sifted vegetable Proteins Just remember, almost all vegetarian proteins are not complete proteins. So you will need to use a protein blend or have several different protein sources. There are definitely obsticals to overcome doing this 100% vegan, but it can be done. Now if you were willing to do the lacto-vegetarian or ovo-vegetarian thing it becomes super easy very quickly.
  20. I am a vegetarian. Even the best hi-Protein vegetarian foods have only 10-15% Proteins and 70% carbs (Beans, milk, legumes, cheese) and quite substantial fat too. Any suggestions for hi-protein vegetarian foods with low carbs and low fats. Thanks in advance for your kind suggestions.

    Desperate for answers

I do this already. I go until my body physically won't let me do anymore. I eat very healthy; vegetarian, lots of protein, vegetables, no junk food, I will do the pre-op diet when I am pre-op. Just don't see much sense in starving myself when I have no end of the road in sight yet.

    Having issue wih meat

You can be a vegetarian and have the sleeve. Just make sure you're getting plenty of Protein from other sources. meat has to be very moist & soft for me too. I eat a lot of meat salads that I make myself to control fat and additives (chicken salad, tuna salad, ham salad, etc). I love shrimp and fish. Chicken and turkey are nearly always a problem unless I cook them in the crock pot. I use ground turkey instead of ground beef and we rarely eat beef unless it's a roast (again, crock pot). If you don't have a crock pot, invest in one. They are on sale here at Christmas time. I have a small one if I'm cooking just a couple of individual servings and a family size for a family meal.

    Having issue wih meat

I suppose technically you don't have to eat certain types of meat at all as long as you are aware of your protein intake. Tofu, steamed fish, lentils, egg whites, cheese, beans, are all good sources of protein. There are even a few vegetarian sleevers around here that seem to do just fine.
