Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having
Sandra Nuelken replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I said I was doing a modified Keto diet, and I just wasn't hungry with it. I only had a few very funny happenings. Toward the end of the year, one of the students asked if I was dying as I kept getting smaller. Another thing that happened to me was my stomach was growling all of the time. During state testing when everyone was absolutely quietly working on their tests off would go my stomach for about 2 minutes. They were used to it so they tried to not laugh. When I told them I had to lose weight for health reasons they were very supportive, unusual for middle school students! Good luck!!! I'm now waiting for my insurance approval. -
Ok....everytime I try to lose weight, I become addicted to the scale. I hop on at least 3 times a day to see where I am....even though I KNOW it hasn't moved. LOL When I did Atkins, I used the keto-sticks every time I pee'd to make sure they still turned pink. Does anyone else get like this? I am getting next week, and don't want the scale to run my life. I might just have to throw it away and drive somewhere to weigh myself.

A lot of people avoid carbs. Fruit has a lot of carbs. I follow the Mayo Clinic Diet...which is a slightly modified Mediterranean diet. I eat a metric feck ton of fruits and veggies, and a lot of complex low glycemic carbs. You will find people following many different diets after surgery. You'll find that different surgeon's groups have vastly different recommendations. Find a group that will work with your preferred healthy diet. There are a lot of ways up this mountain. Keto is very very popular right now. Hands down...it will give you the fastest results. Many people feel wonderful on this diet, but I don't. I prefer to eat a mostly vegetarian diet with meat consumed only occasionally..and my group is completely on board with this. What nearly all groups will require: 60g protein per day. (I get a lot of mine from plant sources..but I get 60g daily) 64ounces plus of water per day. 1200 calories or less per day after surgery. Vitamins.

Finally got my surgery date... when did you cut things out?
KarenLR75 replied to MeowAMR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh wow, great to hear from you! Ironically...we are at the same point but I noticed today I was foggier than I expected (although yesterday I was LESS foggy than expected..LOL). I have had a bad headache all day today. I did not give up caffeine until..well, I guess since I had 1/2 cup this morning I haven't given it up yet. I'm used to 4 to 5 cups a day though...so that probably has something to do with the headache. I noticed my dr's list is different than the nutritionist he sent me too. They both had soft foods @ first start of the 7-10 days, but since I didn't start until 'Day 8.5', I went ahead and started full liquid diet today (regarding Day 8.5 - on the way out of my doc's office last week, I teased him about being grumpy about 10 days and he said "7"...um...ok, maybe he was kidding? When I realized I should clarify, it was already the weekend so I'm taking a day of soft foods out. I've noticed some interesting variations - there are a few ppl I've seen on here doing a full FOUR WEEKS PRE-OP....I just shudder..LOL. Guess it was good that I already had given up sugar/carbs/etc as I was doing keto. I did something similar last week - one night I went out for Mexican and one lunch at a Chinese place. But it was just 1 meal each day...not the entire days. I did have a drink '11 days' prior but I have not had any alcohol since the 10 days started even though I didn't do the pre-op diet until day 8.5 (that sounds so weird!). I feel the same..nervous..anxious..and right now...a bit hungry..lol. Best of luck to you as well! Stay in touch. I know we have lots of other early July peeps out there! -
Pre surgery diet freak out
MagentaMom replied to Jsteelecat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was lucky (-ish) that I only had to do it for 5 days prior to surgery. My only tips are - wean yourself off of caffeinated coffee because you won't be able to have it during recovery - drink Gatorade if you're allowed. It'll help give some energy and keep you from getting a headache - likewise, I drank chicken broth every day to help get something warm and to get some salt. You're essentially preventing a "keto flu" here. I was honestly surprised that I didn't have any headaches during those few days. - I had freezer meals ready for my family so that I wouldn't have to cook for them. My husband could just handle dinner easily. (Not that he's incompetent or something. He had to work and help with watching 3 kids. Me not having to cook was helpful.) Other than that, try and keep yourself distracted. I watched a lot of TV, played video games, and generally tried to not think about wanting to eat. It wasn't terrible but I definitely hated it. Day 2 was awful. Beyond that, things were easier to handle. Good luck! --- RNY 9/10/20 HW: 245 Day of surgery: 225 CW: 218 -
Arabesque, You are describing my journey! Low BP, low blood sugar, most of the time, light headed, lose my balance easily. Drinking Propel and other sugar free electrolyte replacement, making sure I have frequent small “meals”. Fortunately, hubby goes out walking with me because I’m afraid I could pass out! This is why I was never able to do Keto pre-op. I guess some of us are just predisposed to these issues. Thanks, and I do hope things have gotten better for you? Please tell me it goes away? I’m so light headed, I think it officially makes me an airhead Lol.

JUST GIMME THE DANG SURGERY ALREADY!!!
tarotcardreader replied to Suzi_the_Q's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
alright so i did what alot of the other people in this thread did. i saw Dr weiner videos as well and am still researching because I can still go bypass if I change my mind from sleeve. i also took the nutrition packet and began logging my food and have begun interacting with the dietician following her instructions showing food log. we go over that in telehealth apmt. I cut out the foods already that the surgeon said to (carbonated beverages lol). i also had an apmt with nurse pract from the program and for weight they can pull it from your health records from your gp. though for my second apmt I just weighed and I am down 12lbs from the diet. i was told it usually takes 3-4 months to get into the surgery room. i was told I would be required to attend support group at least once so I went to that already, and I plan to go to the next one too as they have little food topics. I am already on their end game diet through the dietician, but I am not in hardcore mode. right now I do not have to count carbs in most veg, and I have been subbing with some keto premade snacks. It's a good time to start the diet if you haven't so you know what you r getting yourself into but also a good time to experiment with foods because no pouch size yet. its kinda like easing into diet slowly. also make sure to look at check list and complete those. mine had things like support group at least once, sleep study etc and I completed what I could and scheduled with gp already to get the others. (Im waiting on gp apmt for egd but also waiting for behavioral health referral to call me with apmt as I was approved to see them for assessment) -
@Sara Bronson Yea Whisps are awesome and are a staple in our house as my wife is also running a keto diet. I can't do pork rinds. Never been a fan.

What’s your weight loss after 6 months and what was you starting weight?
Lily66 replied to Abcdefg's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Also, whether you are willing/able to do a KETO or other very low carb plan post op. I tend to get low blood sugar so can do a lower carb, but KETO-ish leaves me wiped out, extremely low energy. I’ve watched friends drop HUGE amounts of weight VERY fast on KETO type, and suffered no blood sugar issues, but once they go back to regular balanced eating adding carbs back in, they pack the weight back on, and often times even more.😫 So if your post op plan is KETO-ish you can lose LOTS and FAST. As wise folks have stated however, whatever post op eating plan you choose, you’d be well served to try for a version of it that you can live with for the long haul- adding more calories in maintenance stage, but not having felt so carb deprived that you revert to unhealthy behaviors when it’s all said and done. Good luck! -
I met with the nutritionist at my surgeon's office and she told me for the first month of my insurance-mandated three month pre-op diet to limit carbs to just the morning and cut out carbonated drinks. Since I'd tried Aktins/Keto before I figured I'd just go with that. I met with her again five weeks later, having lost 13lb and based on my success she told me not to change a thing for month two. As for my routine: For work days I found the Kirkland (Costco) brand protein bars and have one for breakfast, then a hard boiled egg and/or string cheese for a morning snack. Lunch is spinach salad with carb free dressing, a chunk of some kind of lean meat (often leftover from the previous night's dinner), and some raw broccoli. Afternoon snack is a low carb yogurt and/or another string cheese. If I want a snack when I get home I'll have a chunk of cheddar or some pork rinds. I also bought some Carb-Quik baking mix on Amazon, it's like Bisquick but 95% fiber so very low net carbs and I'll have one or two biscuits made from that a day with butter to satisfy my bread craving. Dinner is more spinach salad, another chunk of meat/fish or a low-carb recipe like sausage and cream cheese stuffed jalapenos and a vegetable. Weekends are similar but I'll have eggs and a biscuit for breakfast instead of the protein bar and I also bought the 5lb drum of Cookies and Cream protein shake mix from Costco which I prefer to make with unsweetened almond milk instead of water. However, twice since I began I felt I ate too much the previous day so I did a full day of nothing but the protein drinks all day and a smaller dinner. Very important of course is getting the 64oz of water a day. I found boxes of 8 packets of Hawaiian Punch fruit punch and Wyler's lemonade for $1 each at a local discount store and stocked up big time to ensure I don't get tired of plain water. I'm also fortunate that my surgeon said I do not need to do a pre-op liquid diet as many surgeons recommend.

liver shrink diets aren’t the same
Arabesque replied to Thicc chick 504's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seems to be lots of variations of pre surgery diets. I was on a keto diet for 2.5weeks before with no minimum weight loss required. One friend was on 2 weeks all shakes no specified weight loss required Another was on 2 meals shakes & one meal high protein, no carbs over 4weeks with a minimum weight loss requirement. I found the diet helped get you in the new mindset in regard to eating. Good luck with your surgery. -
One reason I refuse to do a carb restricted diet....is that I know I can't do it for a lifetime....I feel like crap without carbs. If I do keto? I know myself enough to know that eventually I'll fall off that wagon. I have adjusted to healthy carbs, though, and have even learned to love them:) We all have some things that we know are our Achilles heels. I don't want to give my Achilles heel leverage in my life anymore. All the habits I'm building right now...I'm building on the basis of....this is a lifetime change. This is a diet I can love for a lifetime. This is a diet I will never feel deprived on while I'm eating it. It's hard to build your forever diet. But I'm hopeful. I'm tired of diet fatigue...where I push, push, push, until I break....because of my unrealistic expectations. I'm tired of deprivation until goal...it doesn't work. You starve yourself until hit goal and you go....Finally, I can EAT! And then you screw yourself. It's crazy. This time around I'm going slow and steady, I'm keeping my expectations sane, and letting myself enjoy every meal, every little victory, every stall. LOL:) For the first time, I really feel like I'm going to succeed for a lifetime. Because I am so done with that diet yoyo ****. f**k that. I love my forever diet. it makes me feel strong, happy, and like success....is inevitable. Even if it takes a while.

I've considered Keto but I've always done better by counting carbs. Years ago I lost 40 pounds by watching my carbs but eventually gained it back then decide to have the sleeve. I do not regret it, my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago. My nutritionist told me that with my strong desire for sweets that I should have a piece of sugar free chocolate everyday. I just need to discipline myself and only eat sugar free and low carb. I have come too far to turn back now!

No , they never gave a number. Rny: low fat and very little carb. Just a lot people on maintenance found doing keto/ Paleo helpful in maintenance. Some wish they would of done this earlier. Sent from my Nexus 5 using BariatricPal mobile app

1 week to go and feeling slightly lost
ummyasmin replied to elcee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds pretty good - I'd go completely keto (no sugar, carbs) a couple of days before the surgery because depleting the liver of sugar stores is what makes it flexible and easier for the surgeon. But other than that sounds good. Good luck hon!! -
How much We is one expected to lose right after surgery
KarenLR75 replied to eleanor wagner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a SLOW LOSER. Have been no matter what I tried since I hit my 30's. For the image that GradyCat posted..for the starting weight of '300-400'....I've been roughly on target for the smallest weight loss of the possible 'ranges'. i.e. at 10 days out I may have even been less than projected..maybe 7-8 lbs For 6 weeks out - I was at about 22 or 23 lbs. This is with no cheating, no big calorie intake on any day and with increased physical activity. Some others that I follow that had similar starting weight as I did (or roughly similar weight at time of surgery) and are within + or - 7 years of my current age, have ALL blown away what I've managed to do by leaps and bounds. They lost more like at the high end of the ranges. I wish it was different for me, but I keep continuing to work on NOT being disappointed. Who knows, maybe with me losing more slowly, when some of my 'faster losing' friends....if they start to 'peter out a bit'..maybe mine will keep being continual. In other words, maybe 1 to 2 years out, if we stick to what we know we should be doing, our losses may match more closely (assuming similar physical activity as well). I know that the way I was going, I was staying stagnant and then gaining lbs here and there and at almost 400 lbs, I was on a fast track to what is almost...like a slow death blow to my body..bit by bit. Also, I lost 45-50 lbs on previous 15 months of keto WOL before I ever walked into a surgeon's office. Before I ever started any 'pre-op diet' and my body was VERY stubborn in shedding the weight during those 15 months even when I was HEAVY into ketosis (based on the urine strips). Decades of yo-yo dieting, etc. seem to have just turned my thermostat to 'OFF'. It is up to me to reignite it and for ME, that means I have to be more active - not just having an RNY. I had been walking with my daughter & noticed that was adding an extra lb a wk loss which may not seem like much but over a year that is 52 EXTRA lbs lost from just walking 3 times a wk. -
Anybody do keto diet before surgery?
jobeth.rny replied to juju7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I began keto the Monday after my surgery info session at the end of Feb. I have lost 65 lbs since then following the keto diet. My nutritionist didn't recommend it but she said as long as it was working I could do it. She wanted me to follow a high protein low fat diet. I stayed keto up until the start of my liquid diet, which was Monday 8/21. My surgery is 8/31. I questioned whether or not I wanted to have surgery since I was so successful with the keto diet... but I still have 100+ lbs to lose and I'm not getting any younger. I plan to stay low carb following surgery, eventually transitioning to keto if my body allows it. My labs have improved dramatically and I'm no longer pre-diabetic thanks to keto. -
Help! Craving Pancakes 4 weeks out!!

oatmeal Raisin Protein Bars Ingredients 2 C Rolled Oats 8 Scoops Keto vanilla Protein shake Mix* 1 C Raisins ¼ C Flax Meal ½ C Splenda ¼ C Benefiber 2 t Cinnamon 1 t Salt 1-½ C Unsweetened Applesauce** 1 T Flax or Olive Oil 1 t Vanilla Extract * You can add any vanilla-flavoured protein/whey powder you like, but this is the one I used so be aware that the nutrition information can vary widely. The scoop in this is roughly 2T, which is fairly standard, but this is another thing to keep in mind if you use a different product. ** You can use fresh apples if you like – just wash and core them (you don’t even have to peel them unless they’re waxed), then put them into the food processor after Step 2 in the instructions. Be sure to process them until they’re a fine consistency and use whatever is left quickly. Instructions Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Process one cup of oats in a clean, dry food processor for about one minute until it's the consistency of flour. Add the remaining oats and pulse a few times just to grind them a bit. Pour into a large mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients except the Splenda and mix well; stir in the applesauce and vanilla. Taste, then add Splenda as desired; baking won't alter the level of sweetness. Pour into a foil-lined 9x13” pan and spread evenly. The batter will be the consistency of thick cookie dough, so use a heavy spatula. Bake for 16-20 minutes until it’s a light golden brown around the edges. Cool and cut. The bars can be refrigerated for a week or so, or frozen for several months. Notes I’ve used dried blackberries and cranberries instead of raisins, chocolate Protein Powder with dried cherries minus the cinnamon and raisins, and made similar substitutions. I’ve also made a variation using pumpkin puree instead of applesauce and, when the bars are almost done, topping them with a thin layer of low-fat cream cheese whipped with Splenda and egg whites then returning them to the oven for the last five minutes or so of baking time. never made it to goal with some regain.
Berry78 replied to Mrs Elliott8791's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Even with a Duodenal Switch, it still comes down to calories in vs. calories out. DS patients can also out-eat their procedures over time. The DS very well may be a great option, along with dietary education and management. I agree that you need to get those tests Fluffy mentioned. Hormonal imbalances can make metabolisms pitifully slow. While you are checking into your options, start tracking. Weigh every morsel of calorie containing food and drink that you consume. See where you are at. It is possible to overeat on keto diets as well, so for some people, they STILL have to count. -
Yes and if you YouTube it there is a trainer that does vegan keto so best of both worlds, generally the lower the cals and carb the quicker your body will reach a lipolysis/ketogenic state, cals will be based on BMR you'll only know for sure by analysis, but since you gained not maintained your cals were too high. Try the lower end 1000-1200 Max, lower end of carbs 20-30g daily.

Intermittent Fasting for Maintenance
Arabesque replied to maintenanceman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some do it & swear by it but then you can find someone who swears by any diet and many for whom they didn’t work. No one diet works for everyone because we have different needs. In maintenance you need to find, not a diet, but a way of eating that works for you. One that is sustainable (this is life long & many diets are short term only), provides your body with what it needs & complements your life & how you want to live it. It may incorporate aspects of many styles of eating. For example I’ve included aspects of keto & Atkins, occasionally include vegetarian meals, usually fast for about 13hrs overnight, etc. I only fast 13+/- hrs because if I eat breakfast too early my tummy doesn’t like it & it sits heavily or I feel blah. And I eat the high protein of keto/Atkins because I don’t absorb protein well. So I included these aspects just to keep my body happy & functioning well. So, sure give intermittent fasting a go & see if it works for you. -
Hey BabyNewYear, I'm also almost 4 months and doing great. What a fantastic experience I've been having all the way! Some things haven't changed: I still don't feel when I need to stop eating, so I pretty much overeat many times because my brain doesn't want to stop, so at least once a week I feel extremely sick because of course our stomachs can't handle the amount of food. As I mentioned you before I stopped losing weight after week 5, so I have decided to start a lchf/keto/banting lifestyle which is a lifestyle based on very low carbs, moderate Protein and high in fat; why this approach? I'm barely hungry when I eat fat, it allows me to fulfil my protein requirements and sugars (carbs) is what gave me the metabolic syndrome, weight gain and led me to surgery. I'm really happy with this approach and I really honestly hope that I can follow this the rest of my life. Many ask about my sugar and cholesterol levels with this diet and all of them are back to normal. I'm down 17 kg (37lbs 8oz or 2 stones 9.5lbs ) from 76 kg (167lbs 9oz or 11 stones 13.55lbs) to 59kg (130lbs 1oz or 9 stones 4 lbs) and I'm only 4 kg (8lbs 13 oz or 8.8 lbs) from my goal weight. Lately I've been losing between 0.5kg or less per week (around one pound or less). None of my clothes, underwear nor shoes fit. I've lost my ass, it's totally flat so sitting is painful because I'm sitting on my hips and training has it's ups and downs because I lost more weight from my right side of my body so my sneakers are loser on one side and I hurt my right knee quit often. I'm also trying to become stronger with weight lifting so that I can continue to lose fat. My stomach is still big compared to the rest of my body, but I can start seeing my neck, hands and hip bones. Lose skin on my ass, boobs and upper arms. hair loss, it's bad... but I've seen worst cases on instagram, so I still feel lucky about this, but there is hair absolutely EVERYWHERE! I'm taking Biotin for this. What an amazing journey!!! Looking forward to the next update! Cheers!

Forbes: Why high protein diets may be linked to Cancer
FluffyChix replied to Creekimp13's topic in Rants & Raves
Well at least I'm not necro-posting. I hate when that happens! And hey! Speaking of thanks! LOL. Thanks for plugging my keto blog! (Not much to see there folks--especially since I quit updating and keeping it active a few years ago due to terrible lymphedema leftover from cancer surgery and lymph node removal.)--which is probably not that helpful to most of you since it's based on eating substantially more cals in a day than most of us can manage now, and for most of us, the recipes have too high of a fat content (especially us bypassers). Maybe one day when I'm healthy and fit (hey, I can dream!), I will either continue the blog with an update about my WLS journey and begin a new section devoted to bariatric low carb eating--which for me is protein adequate, "lower-er" fat aka moderate fat, and low carb. But for the foreseeable future, I do not envision that happening any time soon. Although, the blog does still help a lot of people -- mostly those ketoneers who do not have altered gut anatomy and have to balance the challenge of eating a very low calorie diet while trying to satisfy their daily protein needs for a healthy life like we do here at BP.
