I wanna know about carbs... Seriously!

I belong to a facebook group run by a sleever who is a nutritional counselor. She recommends a balanced macro plan for losing weight. She suggests: 35% carbs, 25% fat and 40% Protein (just set up your macros that way in my fitnesspal). if you want to go deeper and look at sugar and Fiber the two should cancel each other out ideally. This is total carbs, not net. My own dietician says less than 100 grams of carbs is extreme low carb and wants me to up mine. I'm comfortable in the 30-35% range (which usually puts me around 70-75 grams. As I continue to be able to eat more I'll get more complex carbs in (probably mostly from vegetables, maybe fruit) so I will be in the 100 gram range, but still in the macro range she suggests. I have noticed that my memory and frankly, thinking has improved since upping my carbs to the 30-35% range. the facebook group is called recipes for weight loss success...of course it is a great source of bari friendly recipes. she's also doing a month of Keto recipes for those who follow keto. I was worried I'd gain or stall when i added back in more carbs (in the form of berries and oats) and I was wrong, did not stall or even slow down. Dr. Matthew Weiner has good youtube videos on post surgery diets and has also written a book. He is a big fan of vegetables and talks about the impact food has on resetting your internal thermostat (metabolism) and how some foods raise it and some lower it. He is a fan of legumes and vegetables as a primary dietary source, suggests limiting grains and dairy and some other of my faves (lol). but it all makes sense. I have greatly cut down on cheese since following the macro plan because it drives my fat macros up pretty quickly. other than 1/4 cup of oats with 1tbs chia seeds in the morning I have no grains in my diet. -
I'm 3 weeks post op now, in the puréed stage of my diet. I will kind of be honest with regards to boredom of foods. You need to prepare yourself to be bored with food after the first few weeks of surgery. You will only be able to eat a few things, and you are lucky if those are things you enjoy eating. During this time, try finding liquids you enjoy and plan on eating those for days at a time. During the first 2 weeks there aren't many options. I found eating the broth from a Vietnamese restaurant was way better than broth from a box or can. I had planned on Jello after surgery because I enjoy it, but even the sugar free caused me to have dumping. The Protein shakes were too thick and didn't settle well on my stomach so I chose GENEPRO as a protein replacement because it's unflavored and can be mixed in anything. Try to prepare for boredom because I wasn't and it hit me hard. I'm doing as little carbs as possible (keto diet) so I cut all carbs from my diet during my liver shrink diet. I had tons of grilled chicken and veggies, spinach and chicken salads (chick filet has amazing salads), lean beef kabobs, and tuna salad. I also tried many egg dishes because that's my go to protein with avocado for breakfasts. If I craved carbs I would eat protein. I don't know why but it helped. Also jello with whip cream was amazing before surgery when I could still eat it. I've not craved carbs or Coke one time since surgery and I think it's because I already went through those struggles during pre-op. Good luck and I hope that helps some. My nutritionist suggested I increase my fats. I looked into keto but my sleeved tummy doesn't care for bacon, which I used to love before surgery, or any other breakfast meats. And mentally I'm not ready to start ingesting foods high in fats. I do eat cheese and drink whole fairlife milk and unsalted nuts. I like butter but rarely eat it and on rare occasions have avocado (never was a fan) I would love to hear what foods you guys incorporate in your keto diets. Yes, 100g carbs seems like a ton to me but she said "your body needs at least 100g of carbs a day to function". Isn't that really outdated advice? How could millions of people be doing Keto and not dropping dead?

Keto is mainly how I roll. Breakfast this morning was a handful of wasabi almonds, a slice of sharp cheddar and two slices of Swiss. Outstanding flavors. lunch is probably going to be an omelette of some type. dinner will most likely be grilled chicken breast as my son requested grilled chicken sandwiches with bacon and the works. I have yet to experience any type of hunger. I will get carb cravings if I eat sugar heavy foods like candy and other junk. Life is simply much easier if I avoid that mess and stick to hearty Protein and vegetables.

Go for it. Keto is great. I Keto from time to time as a jump start to weight loss or to eliminate sugar cravings but often find I just don't enjoy that much fat after a week or two. I can still be in ketosis on more than 20 grams but less than 100 grams of carbs. So I find a low carb diet more sustainable. I just followed the eat protein first, then veggies and (then if I had room, which most of time I didn't) eat carbs adage and lost all of my excess weight.

@@smallbmi Keto is not like Atkins but more like Atkins induction. I doubt UK Cathy is doing any shakes on Keto as she is almost 4 years out. I only make a shake as a snack- maybe once a week if I didn't hit my protein numbers for the day- as I too am 4 years out. -
Keto and VSG definitely compliment each other well, since you have to put protein first anyway. I never did a true keto diet post-op because I am a runner and have always found it impossible to keep up intense cardio on an atkins/keto type diet. I know many other people on these forums have had success with keto post-op, so hopefully you'll get some answers and advice.

After surgery were most definitely in ketosis...now I am on to lifestyle living and trying to find the style of diet that works for me. Ketogenic is something I have come to over and over again. Then I get a delicious carb inside of me and before I know it i can't stop. Does anyone here follow keto diet? What are your results, share your experiences. Thanks!

Glad to see so many people are doing this. I was sleeved 3 weeks ago and have been enjoying eggs with cheese. Lox with cream cheese. Tuna or egg salad with mayo. I ate an avocado plain and it upset my stomach. I even did bullet proof coffee. I still do a protein shake mixed with cold cinnamon coffee, even though they don't encourage whey protein on keto. I can't choke down a protein shake by itself anymore though. I might be ruined from all the protein shakes ???? I also started walking today. I don't even think about bread or sugar really. I think I've just told myself that those are foods that don't fit into my lifestyle anymore. So far so good!

I personally don't have any tips, however, I am on a fb group page where people who post say this way of eating has helped them. Maybe google "Keto diet with Lupus" or something similar.

I told my general GP last week about how I wanted to start doing keto at some stage although I'm sort of doing it now anyway and she's so against it. My husband is keto and she wasn't impressed. Although she's a great dr she knows bugger all about what keto really is im sure. i do a keto diet. I have some problem with red meats but other than that everything has been OK. i do lettuce burgers, blts, eggs with bacon or sausage, tuna with avocado. cottage cheese. Most of my pre-op keto recipes i eat just fine

By definition my 14 day pre-op diet was keto.....simply Protein shakes. The month after was the same....just Protein Shakes. Once I transitioned to chewable food around the 5th week....it was keto. It's been mainly keto ever since. Mainly.....I break away and have other stuff when I want to....such as the Thanksgiving spread my sister cooked.....and the Christmas spread that I cooked. I splurge at times.....but I always go back to keto. Keto is King, lol.

Glad to hear some people are doing the keto diet as I wanted to do that for the last 20 pounds. I was a little concerned about that seriously high fat in it but it sounds like it's OK.

The true keto diet is very high fat. I want to try it to blow off the last 20 lbs but was wondering if the high fat would be a problem with the sleeve. Tried a few days and was GREAT!

So, here's my newbie question of the day. I read with the ds, the passing gas and pooping can stink like something fierce. Is that the only time you stink? Does this surgery make you have a bad odor in general? Also, I'm for the Atkins diet/Keto diet where eating fat isn't a bad thing. Can you eat the fat in sour cream, cream cheese, cheese, etc, or do you have to go fat free because fat signals the dumping syndrome? And lastly, my doctor mentioned there's a pill to help with the stinkiness of the new ds bowels, has anyone tried that and has it worked? -

I make keto/low carb chili, and it just has meat, seasoning and diced tomatoes. I can eat 6 ounces at a time, had some for lunch. Some asked this exact same Quest like a week or 2 ago and people, including myself, posted pictures. Search for that thread. I posted my 5.5 ounce pork chop. I can eat a whole dinner salad at most restaurants, the Protein is only 2-3 ounces and the salad greens are sliders to me so I can pretty much eat unlimited. I was basically doing Keto the couple of weeks before surgery. Didn't really loose while getting off sugar; was up a couple of pounds at my 1 weeks pre-op. I was so bloated from the hormone dump... Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App I keep seeing people say coconut oil, but real Bulletproof coffee uses MCT Oil, not coconut oil. They are not the same thing. Bulletproof coffee requires MCT oil and unsalted grassfed butter, both are needed because both provide different things. I left a bunch of my Keto and low carb Facebook groups because I was sick of people spreading misinformation about Keto, bulletproof and just nutrition in general. @@woo woo Keep using your premier shake. -

My wife is 5'3" and was 180 at her heaviest sometime last year. She was around 175 when we started, and hopes to get down to 115-120 (we both lost a significant amount of weight 4 years ago, and that's where her weight stayed on a keto diet with regular weight lifting). Her mom has a BMI of 50, type II diabetes and some hyper tension issues, so she was concerned that the constant up and down weight struggle would ultimately lead her down that path. Her BMI was 32 starting preop, 30 the day of surgery. -

@@deeveg I know that Jamie eats carbs because she runs marathons. I am sure she will answer with her macros My macros are like 60% fat, 50% Protein 10% carbs. I rarely go over 25 net carbs, so my carbs are usually really lower than 10%, more like 7%. That works for me, it might now work for everyone. It works for me because it includes things I hate. Like I would rather starve than eat Beans, or rice or Pasta. I don't like any of them. People who like things like that will have a hard time eating Keto I think. I like meat and dairy, so Keto, low carbing is perfect for me.
