  1. You've been sick, and on antibiotics. Your body is storing everything it can so it can recover. I also recommend the same thing to people that experience a stall. Up your Water, and calories. Even if it's just 50-100 calories per day with a string cheese or more greek yogurt, something to shake things up. If you're active, then you very well may not be getting enough calories. I hate the word "lightweight" just as much as I hate the word "heavyweight", but your starting BMI was a full 13 points lower than mine, and it's true, statistically, I will lose faster than you. It sucks, but it's what seems to the be the trend. Can you have sugar free puddings, what about thinned out cream of wheat with an egg white tossed in for extra Protein (it sounds gross, but it doesn't change the taste or the texture)? Hang in there, the scale will move. Shake things up, and as difficult as it seems, stress actually causes the body to produce more cortisol which in turns causes no loss. It's the "fight or flight" thing.
  2. Way to go! I believe exercise is a key component in successful weight loss. Not just because it burns calories, but it also helps prevent muscle loss as your body loses weight. I know that my weight loss wouldn't have been as good if I hadn't been exercising on a regular basis. I had to find ways to continue burning calories at the same rate as I was right after surgery. Since I wasn't carrying around the extra weight, my body didn't have to work as hard to get around. I've only done walking as my primary exercise, but I do vary it up by going to walking tracks and park trails. I like a variety of hills and obsticals to keep things from getting boring. Back in October, I started wearing a backpack with a few books in it for added weight then got a weighted vest in November. The vest had the added benefit of working my core and leg muscles in a new way. It's hard to make a sharp turn with a 20 lb vest. :-P

    Eating Too Much?

Keep up with your weight loss and try to follow your surgeon's eating plan. When I eat sugar, I start wanting more and more of it. Just a bite is a trigger for me. Stay on track and you will have an even better smile at the end.
  4. This is a new depressed feeling. I really thought I had depressed on lock down. I suppose you could be right. But the feeling is more frustrate and lost. Misunderstood. Once I'm cleared to start running again next week. I look forward to it. Perhaps that will help. I feel like I have lost friends as thy have been jealous of my weight loss. But it comes with a price a huge price and I need to find my new way.

  6. Feeling glum when you have been brave enough to put yourself through SURGERY in order to try and manage your weight and health better, and you have strived hard to follow your diet plan, and you have been admonished by your doctor (!!!! how dare s/he!!!!) for your pre-op weight loss, and you are being deprived of all the ways you soothed your moods with food previously, well feeling glum sounds absolutely normal and acceptable to me! And so you reached out and asked for support....well done. What all this says to me is that you are being human, normal, acting in your best interest, are persevering, are trying to cope with temporary disappointment, and are going to be ok, because you have the self-caring to ask for support. Well done, but not because of the seven pounds but because of your honesty and dedication. You now need to look at yourself and glow with pride at your courage and tenacity mixed with vulnerability and authenticity. Time.....healing.....getting there....and you will, I am sure. Thanks for sharing. I for one have felt glum, angry, despondent, wondered why on earth I submitted my otherwise healthy body to surgery, why I can't just get on with it without all this, felt helpless, bordering on hopeless....then elated, proud, happy, energised....and then bored, forced to look at my weight gaining behaviour, forced to be brutally honest with myself....and accepting that a body is a body and has its own means of rebelling, doing things its own way, being complex and difficult to comprehend...and still having faith that in the LONG TERM it is going to be ok and it will work. It has been 23 days since surgery and I have stagnated, but this WILL change because this is how I have previously given up on dieting, and with a lap band implanted in me, well it is drastic, and I can't give up....so I won't...and that is why I had it put in me, because KEEPING GOING is what has always defeated me. Thank you so much for your honesty. Lynda

So The 19 Will Be A Month

Hi! I will be 1 month out on the 20th. I have lost 24 since surgery but 39.5 since I started the pre-op diet. I would say your loss sounds great!
  8. I have been dieting and exercising and losing weight for 6 months. I'm worried that I'll do the pre-op diet and not have a sigificant loss like others b/c I'm already doing the low cal/low fat thing. I won't lose a ton of water weight either b/c I'm already on a diuretic for my BP. Anyone else in my position? Did you still lose a lot on the pre-op?

Hello and welcome, I have had no problem with the lap band - however i haven't been at my sweet spot yet, i coasted for a while after initial weight loss then when i decided to get serious again I was following weight watchers. I have not put back on any weight that I have lost in a year which I think is absolutely thrilling. I intend to get to my sweet spot as I am going for a fill in a few weeks, had to partially defill prior to jaw surgery several weeks ago. I haven't been eating very much the last few weeks and have lost about 10 pounds so I'm not sure how the band impacts weight loss if one isn't eating - seems to be the same as without a band. good luck and hope you get more responses for support.

    My story

I'm so sorry for your loss! I had my surgery at 59 and I can identify with the recovery process. I had literally no pain and in fact after surgery I had to look to see if they had done it. However I have Liver Disease from autoimmune disorder. Recovery was especially hard . It took me the better part of 2 months to get back to normal without feeling like I just couldn't do another thing or walk another step. Fatigue which is part of the disease issue of mine was terrible in compounding it with surgery. But after my recovery, wow what a difference. I had energy that I had never had before and felt so good. I too want to see my grandkids get married, graduate college etc. I know both of us are doing this for the right reasons..

    My 1 year Mark!

WOW you look great! Sorry about the gallbladder but now you don't have to worrry about that anymore. I had mine out years ago after a big drop in weight doing Slim fast. The Dr said it's pretty common after a big weight loss.

Congratulations! So happy to hear your experience so far has been so good. Good luck on your weight loss journey! So many great things ahead for you
  16. I have been maintaining a 107 pound weight loss for the past 10 months or so. I have found my days have been either really good or really bad as far as my eating. I am doing great with the excersise. I gained 5 pounds I cannot seem to drop. My question for those maintaining, how do you handle foods not on your typical eating plan. Do you have "treats" at all? Do you just have a little once in a while? I find once I eat something "bad" I say my day is blown so I might as well eat all the things I've been craving. Then I cut back severly for the next few days, sometimes just doing protien shakes for a day or 2. I know it's not the healthiest way to be, but I can't seem to get out of this pattern. Any ideas are wecome. Thanks!

    Be A Hero

Hi I know the feeling. I had some of the some things happen to me. My husband was 200% there for me. It was my grown children. They still 3 years later will not acknowledge my 105 pound weight loss to me or ever say anything about it. I guess I should be happy that we are all talking and enjoying each other. They were so sure that I would die, fail, and starve because of the miss information that they got from the wrong places. I did prove them wrong all accounts, and so I guess it is hard for them to say gee Mom, I guess you did know what you were talking about. It took me 6 months to make up my mind and educate myself about weight loss surgery and what doctor I was going to go to. I know JUST how important support can be, I am here for you every step of the way. Where are you having your surgery? You are doing something that is going to add 20 years to your life and your are being your very own HERO! Never look back--only look forward. There isn't anything you can't do because you are strong and a survivor and you want to change your life. I am very proud of you for making this choice. It takes a LOT more courage to have this surgery than to continue to do what you have been doing right now and that is being fat and unhealthy. Yes, I call it fat, I was fat, and I know there are a lot of nice ways to say it, but fat is fat there is no getting around it. You want something better for yourself and that is great. This is my private E-maile: Suzannesh@aol.com. If you send me an E-mail, I will send you my phone number and you can call me ANY time of the day or night that you need something. The closer you get to your surgery date, you will experience ALL kinds of feelings and emotions. That is very normal. I experience happy, sad, couldn't wait to have it done, scared to have it done all at the same times sometimes. I what if'd myself so much that it made my head spin. On the airplace going to Mexico, I was second guessing if I was doing the right thing. So when you have these feeling or emotions you aren't any different than most of the rest of us. You are pretty normal. I am here for you. There isn't anything that we can't talk about. Hugs, Suzanne

    Picky eater

Find Proteins you like. Make sure you're taking Vitamins to substitute for your lack of veggies. Like @@Sharon1964 said, lay off the rice, tortillas and sugar. Protien fills you up, and carbs make you hungry and crave junk. Your weight loss is fine, but don't expect much more unless you change your diet up to what it's supposed to be (Protein, veggies, lots of water).

    Old surgery

So I just sent in my health report in today. When I was 12 yrs old, they discovered I was born with my pancreas wrapped around my stomach/ : google annular pancreas . I am now 51 and Dr.Valensuela said it would be considered a "revision" due to possible scar tissue . So, it would be another $1000.00 has anyone else had anything similar ? Crap, it wasn't weight loss surgery and I have never had problems since. I don't know who to try next, I really can't go above $5,000. Help, I wanted this done in July on my vacation. Thank you for your responses.

    Ban Hell

It does get easier... hang it there. Once you get your first fill you will notice a difference. Do you feel any restriction at all now? I actually felt some restriction before my first fill. I had 4 fills in total. Try and drink Water and make sure your eating lots of Protein that will help you feel full and also include a snack. I snack on chunks of turkey with a great dip made with Miracle Whip light. Hang in there !! Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss: 156 lbs tomander@bell.net

    Feeling discouraged

Stay positive! We've all hit stalls, then miraculously drop a few pounds after that. You lose a lot in the first few months and eventually it will slow down. But you have to look at it this way, a loss is a loss, even if it's just one pound. We didn't gain this weight overnight and we certainly can't expect to drop it so quickly. We'd all love to lose 10 lbs a week for months, but the truth is, it won't happen. I've only dropped 9 lbs in 6 weeks, not a huge loss, but I'm very happy with it! Track what you're eating, get in your protein and exercise! You'll see the scale moving again, hang in there!
