  1. I think that is awesome! My husband and I are both on weight loss journeys as well, but he decided to take the Atkins route and I got banded Good luck to both of you!
  2. Hello Miss.Susan: I have BC/BS Calpers Netvalue, which required that I either see a nurtitionist or my primary care doctor for the required 6-month supervised diet. I saw a combintaion of both. If I could not make it to the nutritionist I went to my PC. So starting January 2008 I started seeing the nutrionist once a month on a Saturday, which was very convenient for me. She documented my weight loss and/or gains. We atlked about exercise, protien and always discuss the banding/surgery. We talked about nutrition and Vitamins, and so much more. Anyway, my six-months required attendance was completed back in July, however I continue to meet with her monthly because I value the information she provides me and she keeps it real!. I will conitnue to meet with her after the surgery as well.
  3. Slim, I actually had this problem too. I found myself consumed with when and how I was going to be able to drink all the protein shakes. I called up my nutrionist and she said the goal was to shrink the liver, not weight loss. It is true that protein is supposed to help curb hunger, but as long as I was not hungry I could drink what I could. I hope that makes sense. It seemed to calm me right down. Good luck! I am still on the darn thing since my surgery date had to be moved. I was allowed to eat regualar food yesterday and today and let me tell you it was not great. My body is not used to all the crappy food and I am paying for it. Can't wait to get on the pre-op diet again tomorrow! Good luck all Tamara
  4. My surgery went without a hitch. I had little to no pain -- but everyone is different. I have been banded 4 1/2 weeks, and have had NO nausea. I haven't thrown up, or been "stuck". I have had NO complications!! I have lost almost 20 pounds in 5 1/2 weeks, and I only had to do the pre-op diet for 1 week. So, most of my weight loss is post-operative. I love my band, but I do somewhat miss all the "bad" foods I used to eat. However, I am too excited about losing the weight and keeping it off to get too bothered by it! I was very scared before my surgery, because face it, this is a life-changing event. Now, I wouldn't change it!!

    First post!!

Welcome. I think it is a good idea for them to come along. I am now finishing the second day of my pre-op diet and will get banded 9/23. Seemed like the Journey started a while ago but it has gone quick. This is a great site with lots of support, and I can't think of a question that you can't get answered here. Best of luck. If you end up deciding to move forward I would suggest grabbing a copy of weight loss surgery for dummies. It is a good book that lays out alot of what you are looking at doing. Good Luck Greg

    New Guy 55-80 overweight

You have to understand that this isnt a one shot surgery and I am "fixed" kind of thing. There are revisions, complications, appointments to adjust restriction.... point being its a lot of time, money and effort. A doctor is going to tell you that should plan on 50% of your excess weight loss with the band - so for you what is that like 35lbs? I am not sure its worth it for you. That said, and end to the yo-yo dieting might be. You also have to ask why your fat... Do you have portion control issues (I did) or do you eat all day long (I didn't). From what I have seen on here the band seems to work better for folks with portion issues. Also what do you eat? The band isn't going to help you make the right food choice - you will still have to do that on your own. I had never been the thin guy - but I am now thanks in part to my band. 296 with a bmi of 42 to 165 in a little over a year, but not without two additional surgeries. But still the best decision I ever made. Good luck

    Just a little curious...

My doctor does band with or without plication. At first I said no to plication until he explained that there is no extra down time. No extra cost and I could still do it on an outpatient basis. So I have decided to go ahead with the plication. He also said that immediate weight loss with plicatation banded patients has bee comparable to that of bypsass patients.
  8. Hola!!! I just had my 3rd appt yesterday and also hoping to be sleeved in November. I am sooooo ready to be done with these requirements. Would love to keep up with your progress! I am 26 Female 5'4 300lbs BMI:51.5 Aetna Insurance Had surgeon consult, Upper GI and will have my psych eval in September

    What to expect?

I had my pre-op appointment following my 3 hour nutrition class in the morning. I couldn't eat or drink all day because of a couple of tests they had to take, so I don't remember everything...just being extremely hungry and thirsty. From what I can remember, they took a few viles of blood, I met with a hospital nurse and she did an ekg and talked about weight loss surgery in general (she was certified in something related to bariatric surgery and had actually had it herself 8 years prior), I had my barium drink and they took pictures of my insides, I registered with the hospital for my stay, and I think that was all (except since I was self pay I also met with the finance lady to go over some things). It was a pretty smooth process and they kept just passing me off from person to person although there was sometimes a slight delay between things. I wish you a smooth easy day!
  11. My post-op program didn't say much about carbs except to keep them low. It did state things I should not eat initially and later on during the losing phase, but because the pre-op diet they had me on limited my carbs to 30 per day or less, that's what I continued in my initial post-op diet. I was only on clear liquids for 2 days and then full liquids for like 2 weeks. I then progressed to soft/mushy food that I stayed on for another month I believe. I'd second/third people's suggestion to talk with your surgeon/nutritionist. Ask your questions and get clarification until you're content with your plan (even if it deviates from their recommendations). I just feel that it's nice to have input from the professionals to help us make the best decisions as possible. As for the weight loss rate, it's so hard to guess these things before hand. I tended to be very conservative with my estimates so that I wouldn't be disappointed with the loss. This kept me from getting too disappointed and set myself up for failure. BUT, you know yourself best, and maybe this kind of thing wouldn't bother you too much. Good luck!
  12. Finally had the follow up, Dr put in for my approval today! I got through a lot of the crap really quick, quit smoking, lost the 16 lbs the dr told me to for insurance, saw the food shrink, saw the nutritionist, sleep clinic.... Long story short I finished all those requirements in less than 6 weeks, and finally had my follow up with the surgeon today. I weighed in where I needed to and the Surgeon said he was going to submit the request to insurance so we could set a surgery date, Hell Yeah!! The office girl that works with the insurance company's told me that with my insurance acceptance letters usually come within three weeks and often before two weeks is up! I'm so frigging happy I could just explode! I really want to get this done before September, and be on my way to looking and being healthy next summer. The only problem I'm gonna have is maintaining the weight loss I have had to get this far, I lost it quickly by eating between 800 to 1000 calories per day, and I'm not sure how much it'll take to maintain this weight. I may take a couple practice shots at this liquid diet while I'm waiting out the rest of the process, does everyone use slim fast or Opti Fast? I tend to like the EAS Protein lite, it only has 100 calories, Same with Muscle milk light, and BJ's sells them both by the case.

    Help

What a horrible comment to say. . . that was totally unprofessional! I was sleeved by the most sweetest physician ever here in San Antonio. . the office staff is very professional and they will call you back regarding your questions. . . but to answer your question myself, after i had the surgery i DID NOT have any headaches regarding hunger again. . .you won't really experience hunger the way you do now, it's more like pressure, but that comes after the swelling and stuff is over. . . in the first 1 1/2 weeks i lost 32 lbs and then at 7 weeks i had lost 53 lbs. . .i'll weigh in only at the doctor appts and have another appt on the 16th. I know that the weight loss has slowed down drastically but my attitude toward it is whatever! I look really good at the weight i'm at right now so whatever happens happens. . .good luck in your journey and if your interested in more information on my doctor just let me know, he does have his own website. . .
  14. Came and went. I had orientation with So Cal Kaiser today. So much info and well worth it. I have all the paperwork to fill out and fax tomorrow morning to the center. Hopefully I can get into the June 12 week class, for there are some slots still open. So, it is 12 weeks of classes, 10% weight loss, do all labs and complete other things as well. I am ready. I already began my walking, watching what I eat and so on. I hope everyone is doing well and had a great weekend. If anyone has any questions about KAISER please don't hesitate to ask. I went to the Bellflower facility. Private message me. Good night
  15. Thanks Babbs. The thought of skin doesn't bother me for some reason. And to be honest I've had thinning hair for a while because of a burn on my scalp that took place years ago. Of course my main objective here is to be healthy. I am not doing this to look better though I'd be lying if I didn't acknowledge it being a perk. I just don't understand why these images vary so much. I haven't been under 200 for 20 years, or under 175 for 24. Maybe the fear of not knowing, not having a comparison... It's interesting that you have a hard time seeing the weight loss as you lost and in pictures. I wonder how common that is? I know right now pictures are brutal on me. I look so much bigger than I do when I look in the mirror (at least I think so). I always try to ask these random questions. It helps me pass the time while I wait for my surgery date, and I love others perspectives. I like to hear what others think about to.
  16. I have Cintra and was wondering if insurance will deny you if you dont lose weight while on the 3 or 6 month supervised weight loss plan?
  17. Stick to your diet and don't cancel if you don't have to. It is so much easier than you think. You need more discipline for the pre-op than you will after the surgery. I am 2 years and 7 months out and still have maintained my weight loss and know it was the best thing I ever did. I just ate a bag of cheese nips and I did have a Jr. Whopper yesterdy (I ate the whole thing) but I eat healthy too. Just know you will be able to have whatever you want in small quantities and your stomach doesn't know the difference. The depression comes from not being able to eat everything you love because food has been all of our best friends probably. It is going to be so easy you are going to wonder what you were freaking out about.. If everyone could handle the pre-op diet perfectly then none of us would have ever been in the shape we were in to need the weight loss surgery, right? You are going to be so much happier which means a better mother for your kids...
  18. Yay! I'm glad it went well for you. I think your aunt is right also. The more you learn the better off you'll be. I'm sorry for your loss:( I had lost 55 lbs on Weight Watchers in 2009 and then 2 of my relatives were murdered. It all came back and then some.

    I cant find a surgeon~

Don't know a thing about the Aussie health system, but why don't you talk to the hospital and see if they can give you some names of weight loss surgeons who operate in their hospital and work from that end instead of where you are right now?

    FaCiNg ThE tRuTh .....

It is ironic that I read your post tonight because I have been having the same issues as you. I have been approved for my surgery already but I have spent the last three nights sleepless because I am wondering what my friends and co workers will say when I start showing my weight loss. I decided not to tell everyone, just a few select people. A few months before I began the journey into the lap band process, I mentioned it to one of my closest friends who happen to be overweight also. She told me that I should go on Medifast and not go through such a drastic surgery to lose weight(Did I mention to you that about a year ago, she was denied by her insurance company for WLS)? I have just come to the realization after reading your post that I am going to do this for me and think positive thoughts and I cannot wait to start posting my weight loss success! I'm with you on being afraid of losing close friends, but why would they want you to be over weight and unhappy? You are doing this for yourself and your child. I am getting more excited about the surgery and the weight loss as I write this. I truly believe that once your friends begin to see how good you look and how happy you are, they will probably start to ask you questions about your weight loss and maybe look into the surgery themselves. I hope you get the call soon so you can start seeing the results of your weight loss in real instead of in your dreams. Hang in there and continue with the faith. :cursing:
  21. I am 5 mos. out and my weight loss has slowed so much. For me I'm now thinking it won't be a huge issue at this point. I hope not. But my doctor did caution me about this too. I personally think the size might be a factor - size of boughie. I'm a 34 and often wish I could eat more, but the size I have seems to keep me from gaining and I am still slowly losing. But it is down to just 5 lbs a month now. I think I'll have more trouble getting to my goal than I thought.
  22. Hi everyone! I'm just starting my process. I received my referral from my PCP and have an appointment for the seminar and a "bod pod" test on March 2nd. I did call me insurance who gave me their requirements. I see that alot of you had to see several specialists. Is that a requirement of the surgeon? I have BCBS of IL and it states I need a psych eval, but not cardio, etc. Also, this is a part of requirements for surgery thru insurance: Documentation of active participation in a comprehensive, non-surgical program of weight reduction for at least six (6) months, occurring within the twenty-four (24) months prior to the proposed surgery and preferably unaffiliated with the bariatric surgery program. (NOTE: The initial BMI at the beginning of a weight reduction program will be used to meet the BMI criteria for the definition of morbid obesity used in this policy.) A program will be considered appropriate if it includes the following components: Nutritional therapy, which may include medical nutrition therapy such as a very low calorie diet such as MediFast and Optifast or a recognized commercial diet-based weight loss program such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. Behavior modification or behavioral health interventions. Counseling and instruction on exercise and increased physical activity. Ongoing support for lifestyle changes to make and maintain appropriate choices that will reduce health risk factors and improve overall health. I have been seeing my PCP every month since OCtober and my weight has always been discussed and she gave me her advice on how to lose weight, etc. Will that qualify as the first 5 months in 6 month participation or is more required?
  23. Hello! I had not had my lapband yet. I hope to have it done in August. I was wondering if others who have been banded or is planning to be, worried about excess skin? I desperately want to loss this weight I have been carrying around for years, but I then think that I would be unhappy with myself all over again if I have excess skin. My emotions are just all over the place........I guess.
  24. Thanks SO much for the info (and congrats on your loss!!) Very reassuring! I know I see the Gastro next and half to undergo a few more tests(thankfully, I've had the same doctor/dr.s' office for over 15 years-they have records of every attempt..lol..) then it's off to the races! thanks again!
  25. I read a statistic that banded patients on an average, lose 55% of their excess body weight after 2 years. I've also read that gastric bypass patients have a window of opportunity to lose weight during an 18-24 month period. After that, the weight stops coming off. My question is this, can banded patients continue to lose weight after 2 years or does the weight loss stop like gastric bypass patients? I don't think I can go through surgery and accept a loss of 55% of my excess weight. Is there more hope than that? Thanks in advance if you can offer me some personal insight!
