I've been regularly drinking my own kefir since one week after surgery. We're allowed to have yogurt (which does sometimes have live cultures in it, depending on the brand), so I don't see why you couldn't have other probiotics.

I will be 4 weeks postop tomorrow, I'm hungry too! I went to Walmart Grocery store today and finding protein rich foods without it becoming monotonous is a real task. I found some egg bites premade with cheese and Turkey sausage, I don't eat pork, but they had bacon as well. I found a large container of Oikos Yogurt which is 12 grams of protein per serving, egg whites, cream of wheat, oatmeal, Sargento cheese snacks, milk for protein drink mixes and few other items for my family. I miss having ftuit, vegetables, salads, fish because my body is rejecting my favorite protein. I'm also feeling tired of sweet liquids, not being able to drink plain old fashioned water without an enhancement to tolerate it, I want cold cereal, I want cashews and pistachios for a healthy protein boost. I miss some of my favorite healthy staples that would satiate my hunger, but Ariel aka my stomach is still healing and I have to respect it. I'm hungry too.

Feel like I was kicked in the stomach
MonieLynnPgh posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys. I was sleeved on 3/13. I have been doing great and yesterday was advanced to phase 2. I had 2tbsp of greek yogurt for breakfast with 2tbsp of baby oatmeal (yuck). For lunch I had 1 tbsp of cottage cheese mashed and 1 tbsp of pureed peaches which I couldnt stand so didnt eat all of it. For dinner I had 2 tbsp of mashed tuna fish and maybe 1tsp of green beans. I held everything down and felt great. This morning I woke up and feel like someone kicked me in my upper abdomen and I have pain in my right kidney. Ive been drinking about 1 liter of water a day plus the clear fluid. (Yesterday plus the food). I still am able to drink today. Im not having any nausea or upper shoulder pain and I am still peeing and moving bowels ok. (Sorry if tmi). What could be wrong? I called the surgeon today but never received a call back. The only things I can think of is 1. My daughter (31lbs) is having nightmares and I had to pick her up 2 nights in a row) 2. My other daughter (19lbs) I had to pick up because my oldest daughter fell on her 2 days ago. 3. 2 nights ago I took a pretty large gulp of water not realizing and it was a teeny bit painful. 4. I also started my vitamin regimen. Sorry for the long winded post. Im just giving as much info as possible so I can hopefully get some answers. -

We're very blessed to live in a big community with great stores. We were wiped out, but now it's mostly restocked and there was always fresh veg and produce without price raises. So very blessed. So honestly, we're just focusing on the foods that boost our immune system and support it. And are eating mostly the same. Breakfast and or Brunch is always some kind of egg and veg, or smoothie/proffee. Lunch is almost always a BAS (Big Ass Salad), or wrap, or roll, or quick green soup, or cottage cheese/yogurt conglomerate. I did restock for another 3 weeks, yesterday and got stuff to make: Chicken Crust Pizza with Pepperoni and Veg Beef Fajitas with Lo Lo Wraps Chicken Soup for the Soul (+ Chicken Salad) Salmon with somethin Grilled Pork Steak with somethin And then we'll have about 2 weeks of leftovers from those. #snort Holden steady at 130.6lbs this morning so doing pretty good on routine and stress eating. -
What do you eat after 6 weeks post op!
NovaLuna replied to Mortiz8892's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 9 weeks out as of today. For breakfast I usually eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese or a yogurt. For my first snack of the day I usually have a cheese stick or some diced peach slices in water. For my lunch I usually have deli sliced turkey (3 slices) and one cheese stick divided in three to make roll-ups lol or 2oz of rotisserie chicken with sugar free bbq sauce (my preference is G. Hughes Hickory flavored) and usually a scoop or two of green beans, or I eat left overs from the night before. For my afternoon snack I usually eat a mini bell pepper sliced in half and dipped in 2TBS of salsa or cheese crisps (sometimes dipped in salsa lol). Dinner is kinda all over the place though lol. Last night I had a turkey burger patty with a tablespoon of mustard on top, 1/4 of an avacado, and a slice of tomato. The night before I had a make shift stir fry using cauliflower rice instead of regular rice with chicken, mushrooms, red bellpepper, water crests, carrots, broccoli, onion, etc. with sugar free Teriyaki sauce (again, G. Hughes is my preference). If I have I late night snack (I rarely do) it's usually fruit or a yogurt or cottage cheese, etc. Cauliflower pizza is a good food option too and leaves TONS of left overs! Stuffed bellpepper with cauliflower herb rice is also delicious. And one of my favorite meals so far is a make shift taco salad with seasoned turkey meat, avocado, taco sauce, tomato, and cheese... it's yummy! Hope this helps in some way... -
Diarrhea on liquid diet 7 days post op
BriarRose replied to Ling82's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery 10 years ago...so things and protein drinks may have changed. I could not tolerate the protein drinks. I get so ill from anything with any kind of sugar substitute. I sill have to read labels like crazy because flavored yogurts, and any "diet" sweets will make me very very sick. Read labels and see what is in there and try different protein drinks. -
March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
biginjapan replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had bypass a few days before you and I've been on purees (and full liquids) since the day I left the hospital (day 3 post-op). I haven't had any real issues except with Greek yogurt (I guess I'll be a bit lactose intolerant for a while, common with bypass, not so much with sleeve). But I had the sleeve 3 years ago so have already been through this once before, where I had to wait a couple weeks before going on purees. In both cases, waiting, or starting right away, I've been doing well. I've been drinking blended soups, pureed veggies, soft tofu, cottage cheese, etc. Just go slow and start with small amounts at first. Try one new (pureed) food per day. After a few days, try adding another pureed food for a second meal. Your sleeve will let you know what's working and what's not. -
Ever Feel Like your stomach was a big ball?
IAmGrace posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I had too much for supper last evening. I had 5 ounces of greek yogurt and about 1/2 hour later I had a protein shake. About 1/2 hour after that my stomach felt too full. It felt hard and distended. That happened to be once before about a week ago and it went away fairly quickly. However I woke up this morning still feeling like my stomach was too full (again hard and distended). I have a call into the doctor but haven't heard back yet. Has anyone ever felt this way? -
Can only tolerate baby spoons of mushy foods and then I develop Hiccups
biginjapan replied to GAjeepGirl's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
You're only a week post-op and already eating eggs? That might be a little fast - and clearly it is since you are either in some kind of discomfort or have the hiccups which means you are overeating (!). I had my surgery on March 3rd and was on full liquids and purees for 2 weeks - so blended soups, cottage cheese, yogurt, mashed/pureed veggies, soft tofu, etc. - all that. Now that I'm on week 3 I have started with soft/mushy foods. I tried the ricotta bake but that was a disaster - clearly I'm (hopefully temporarily) lactose intolerant (very common for bypass patients!), so I'll be avoiding any primarily dairy-based foods for a while. I tried some of Shelly's Egg Bites this week and they've been going down quite well. Canned tuna has also been a good option for me (I mix in a little shredded cheese and add some seasonings, warm it up just enough to soften the cheese). Here's the thing - just because you CAN eat something, doesn't mean you HAVE to - if it is causing any kind of problem, just refrain from eating it for a week, and try that food again later. Stay on full liquids, or add different kind of mushies like the ones I mentioned above. And the less liquid it is, the less you should eat of it, at least in the beginning. So if you can drink 1/4-1/2 cup of liquids at a time, your food intake should be 1/8c. Try that - you may have to have more "mini-meals" but it's better than waiting hours for the discomfort to clear so that you can your liquids and/or other food in. -

It's not about calories. It's about PROTEIN. The only protein I see you consuming in a day is breakfast and dinner. The soup is okay I guess, but I would cut the portion in half and add some protein to that meal. All the snacks are empty - no real nutrients. If you are capable of eating a veggie burger and asparagus, you certainly could add more nutritious snacks throughout the day. *Note: I understand jello and lollipops if that's on your plan, but if you are eating real foods then I don't know why these are still on your plan. More yogurt, or cheese, or eggs, etc - something with protein would be a better alternative. The other thing to consider is that jello/lollipops/etc are traditionally sweet foods, desserts, snacks. Even if they are zero calories, they probably still remind you of eating those real things in the past. If you can avoid those kind of temptations, it will probably help you in the long run. For example, today I had: Breakfast: Chocolate/PB2/banana smoothie made with sugar free almond milk [Protein: 29g, Calories: 266] Snack 1: 1 Mushroom egg bite (size of a small deflated muffin) [Protein: 5g, Calories: 53] Lunch: a chicken roll (basically a processed chicken breast rolled to the size of a small breadstick). I split this up into two servings eaten about 2 hours apart. Today was my first day to try meat of any kind. [Protein: 13g, Calories: 65] Snack 2: PB2 mix (PB2 is powdered peanut powder with 85% less calories/fat. I mix it with water for a small snack). It's actually a bad habit I need to break eventually, but I can't eat yogurt or cheese straight up because of a newfound lactose intolerance problem, so this is my alternative. [Protein: 8, Calories: 90] Dinner: Miso soup with tofu [Protein: 14g, Calories: 136] Total for today - Protein: 69g, Net carbs: 38 (a little high today because of the banana and PB2], Fat: 20g, Calories: 610 You can see that I don't eat a single meal that doesn't have some kind of protein in it. Even when my stomach is feeling a little rough and I want to just have liquids, I'll replace the meals with an extra protein drink (the juice kind) or miso soup, and skip all snacks (just drink extra water). If I have soup, I'll add protein powder to it, or, my preference right now is miso soup, since it's so savoury and high in protein. The tofu is optional but it's basically a puree/slider so goes down easy. My main goal is protein (50g or more on this stage, but if I can get over 60 I'm really happy, staying between 400-600 calories (today was a little high), and under 40 net carbs - 30 even better). Fat, high or low, is not a concern for me. Anyway, I'm just posting this all here as a way to think about what you are consuming. Focus on the protein, not the calories. You can get many nutrients from vitamins, but you can only get protein from food. It's important - if you don't consume enough, your body will start taking it from your muscles to make do, since it's so important for several different functions (tissue repair, hormones, etc.). This can really weaken you. Try your best to find real foods (not protein powder, although that is something we need in the beginning) for your protein. One suggested meal I have now that I'm on soft foods is to add egg white to oatmeal and mix it in. I've never tried that but I will once I can find some oatmeal around here! I don't know what kind of guidelines you've been given, but what I have right now from my surgeon (and bear in mind this is for gastric bypass) is to eat one or two bites of food, chew well, wait 5-10 minutes, then have a few more bites, then wait, etc. But all food must be eaten within 30 minutes - any left over after that time goes back into the fridge for later. Regardless of surgery type, portions should be about 1/8-1/4 cup for real food, and 1/4c -1 cup for liquids like soup, is about right. I also try to be very conscious of what and when I am eating - if I am in front of the computer (which is almost always) I make sure to focus on my food, not the screen, when I am eating. I measure out portions before I put any food in front of me. I weigh things - tofu cubes, bananas, everything. It gets me accountable down to the last gram. It is more work, but I feel much more satisfied with the way things are going. Hopefully you can find a way around this!

Ughhhhh! DUMPING IS THE WORST!!!!!! I’ve only dumped a few times! But it’s awful. And I almost can’t even describe it. The heart racing, stomach churching, mouth watering. Yuck! And it’s the weirdest things that make me dump. Halo Top ice cream, the lowest sugar granola, low sugar Greek yogurt! WEIRD THINGS!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you ever so much for your informative and comprehensive response to my inquiry. I appreciate this more than you know. Just FYI I am not taking in more than 700-800 calories daily. It seems to me that even without surgery I should be losing weight on that caloric intake. I will be MUCH MORE VIGILENT concerning the amount of food I consume at meals. I will give you an example of what I have to eat daily: BREAKFAST: High protein shake = 160 calories LUNCH: Amy's Tomato Bisque soup = 240 calories DINNER: One source of protein (Yogurt/veggie burger/cottage cheese) usually about 240 calories My snacks are diet jello for ten calories per serving - 2 servings at the most Sugarless lollipops for 17 calories each for about 34 calories in a day I'm down about 9 pounds from my date of surgery but have been stalled for about 5 days now. I don't think I can try harder than I am right now. Maybe I'm wrong but doesn't it come down to calorie intake? Thank you again. I DO APPRECIATE THIS! My best, Grace

Trying new foods and getting sick sucks
biginjapan replied to CammyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same issue! I thought what I had was dumping, but after emailing my surgeon he thinks the same as catwoman7: lactose intolerance. I was in pain/discomfort for 8+ hours after eating it, which is way too long for it to be dumping syndrome. The thing is, I've been eating other things - yogurt, cottage cheese, adding cheese to different dishes, even my protein powder is whey based - none of them cause the same reaction (well, except the Greek yogurt I had once I returned to Japan. Maybe different from the ones I had in Europe?). Despite the awful reaction with the ricotta bake, I still add cheese to other dishes. Shelly's egg bites have a lot of cheese in them and I made my first ones (in a long, long time) last night and had no issues. So my takeaway from this is don't eat a primarily dairy-based dish - it will cause too many issues. But adding small amounts of cheese (or other dairy products) to a non-dairy dish (like eggs) is okay. For now. I may try again in a few months time and see how things go then. -
Im scared of gaining weight through this crisis
Darktowerdream replied to jasmineinmymind's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I don’t know what to say exactly. Whatever your fears regarding Covid-19 it shouldn’t alter your healthy way of eating post gastric bypass. There are plenty of options that do not need to be “fresh foods” to keep on hand that are bariatric friendly, low carb and low sugar for meals. I managed to get eggs, yogurt, I have protein powder, protein bars, a few protein soups, I also have frozen foods I tend to buy vegetarian frozen foods. But depending on your stage there are options. Unopened cottage cheese and yogurt stays fresh longer check dates. You can buy canned proteins like tuna, chicken, etc. frozen vegetables. No reason to just stock up on carbs. Also try to find things to distract from worries besides food. If you are safe at home just try not to worry. @AJ Tylo is right there is nothing we can do to change the course of this. I’ve immunodeficiency and lifelong chronic illness and I can’t stress over this. I’m just doing my best to stay on track with what I can. even though I’m dealing with my own personal issues despite everything going on out there. Even though it’s hard as life gets thrown into a strange situation that’s new to you just try to take it one moment at a time and be grateful you are healthy and alive. I can’t play psychic as people seem to like to and say it’s gonna get better, just take it in the moment. And find things to occupy your mind. Get on track with getting hydration, and protein and don’t fall for carbs or comfort foods just because you think it will make you feel better. There are many other things you can do to find comfort and solace and distract your mind to feel better even if it’s just binge watching a really good tv show or taking a long walk alone in nature ... you don’t need a gym for that or to be around other humans either. side note if you can’t exercise compensate in other ways. I can’t exercise due to my chronic illness and disability. I follow a low carb way of eating, and calorie counting. But honestly even now you can find ways to get in some exercise, at home, alone in nature, etc. get creative ... -
y Guys! Im 2 weeks post op and finally in my soft foods phase (YAY!) but I can barely eat 1 oz before I feel sorta wiped out. Also everything I eat or drink gives me gas. I'm only eating what is on the list - tuna, yogurt, applesauce, premier protein drinks, water. Just looking for some suggestions and advice on how you guys navigated this phase. I really want to just EAT! Lol! I literally cant eat till satisfied and it's getting a tad bit frustrating. Any encouragement is welcome! Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk

Day 3 post op and can drink liquids so well it scares me
biginjapan replied to CammyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I understand, dumping can be caused from a variety of factors - food moving too quickly into the intestine, or something that your stomach/intestines do not like - it's commonly sugar, but not necessarily. Nausea, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping are all symptoms of early dumping syndrome, and I'm pretty sure that's what happened to me. I did think about lactose intolerance, but I've been drinking yogurt drinks and eating other kinds of yogurt all week (since the first day post-op - given to me by the doctor in the hospital). I had no issues with those, so it's curious that I had a problem here in Japan. That said, I'm laying off any dairy for at least a week just in case. I think it may be because I ate it too fast, or my body didn't like the mix (I added some protein powder to the yogurt). When I was feeling horrible I also had a little bit of a herbal tea popular here in Japan (that I've been drinking for 6+ years) and that just made my symptoms ten times worse. I didn't know if it was because it just inflamed the problem, or added to it. But today I tried it again and within moments of drinking it my stomach was not happy. So the tea (an oolong blend) was definitely another issue. Luckily I only had a couple of sips and did not eat or drink anything else for the rest of the day (other than water), so although I was uncomfortable for a while, it was nothing like the 5 hours of pain I had last night. I'm disappointed though - one thing I love about Japan is all the non-black teas that are available to drink everywhere (this is definitely not a soda-type of country), but if I can't drink them that will lower my liquid choices down to water and herbal teas I can make at home. -

biginjapan replied to CammyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I spoke too soon (that's karma for you). My last meal of the day was some low fat yogurt with extra protein and OMG - now I know what dumping syndrome is! I felt horrible for about 5 hours, nauseous, gas (stomach abdominal area was very distended), etc - it wasn't until I was finally able to vomit that I felt better and could actually go to sleep. Even then I had to lie on my back since lying on either side brought back those symptoms (but less). I certainly learned my lesson! I think I'll take it easy and just do liquids today. -
Day 3 post op and can drink liquids so well it scares me
biginjapan replied to CammyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing ok with liquids and purees. I can eat more than the recommended amounts though, so will need to be more strict about portion size. I'm back in Japan as of today so am hoping to get away from the high carb foods I've been eating (pureed fruit, yogurt, etc) and into healthier stuff like miso soup and proper protein shakes (I ran out of protein powder while travelling). I noticed today that I'm not quite hitting my protein goals, so that (and water of course) will be my goal until I get to soft/mushy food next week, which will open up a lot more options I think. I'm definitely recovering faster than I did my first surgery, which is good. It makes me feel like I could progress faster in my food goals but I'm going to stick to the plan. Question: how's everyone doing with bowel movements? I've been pretty good (I was worried right after surgery of constipation but that passed (!) quickly enough) but the colour of my stool is a bit off - hoping it's just the effect of surgery/meds/food going through the digestive track too rapidly. -
Did anyone have complications post op

I also had signs of EO when the doc found my ulcer. Although the test did not demonstrate a high enough eosinophilic count to actually call it EO, the changes in the esophagus sure looked that way. And those abnormal striations were NOT there when I had my preop endoscope. The only thing that was dramatically added to my diet post op was whey protein. Doc said that sometimes people do have allergic tissue reactions to whey, so I stopped the whey and all dairy. A lot of my bloating and gas issues resolved almost immediately. I am very hopeful that my next scope in April will show this to be completely resolved. Fortunately for me, it was a no brainer as to what food was the culprit, and elimination was easy. I just switched to pea protein powder, Ripple milk (pea protein), soy or oat yogurt. -

My follow up went well. I get to start full liquids this week. I’m anxious though. Anything other than broth, water and protein shakes is making me nauseous. I’ve tried milk—nope, lactose intolerant now but not prior. I’ve tried juice zero sugar added diluted with water and nausea then. I went and got some fair life milk today fat free and will try that later today. I even got some calcium with d3 and that too made me nauseous. I was so looking forward to yogurt next week, now not so much. -
I second Fluffy's suggestions. All sound good. Here's what I did: 1 box SF instant pudding 2 cups Fairlife milk 1 scoop unflavored unjury Sets up like normal and you can enjoy any flavor of pudding you like. *I stayed away from adding flavored powdered protein to already flavored pudding mix. It just made it too sweet for me. I like Fluffy's suggestion to use greek yogurt with your favorite flavor of powdered protein. I may have to try that for an easy, high-protein dessert one of these days.
