    New issues two years out

I am 2 years 2 months, I used top have stomach pains with some food my doctor did a scope and found no ulcer this was about 18months out but the did prescribe prevacid fast tabs which I melted under my tongue . Since then I haven't felt anything. I do keep them on hand prescribed my family doctor just in case I need them . Also, am in my early 50s after surgery the hot flashes started never felt them so bad until after surgery. I had one period after surgery and then nothing more. Guess the surgery change my body earlier than I had expected . Hope this helps but get it check out

    How hunger feels now

My hunger is also in my mouth, then to a lesser degree in how my body reacts (headache, shaky, foggy) I never get stomach hunger pains anymore probably because there isn't much stomach left 🤫 I didn't recognize it as hunger for a long time, I thought it was just thirst and most of the time it is. Other times I must eat or I feel terrible. (Unless I'm fasting - I push right past all of these feelings)

    Post Op help

I think alot of people have had some covid weight gain. Both wls people and non-wls people. Reduction of activity, boredom, stress, proximity to the fridge/pantry all day long, etc., etc. I had a small gain of 6 lbs that I acknowledged mid-summer. As of this week I finally said good bye to those stinkin’ pounds. There really wasn’t a secret strategy to the loss: I cut calories and increased exercise a smidge. Took me 4.5 months (which is a stark reminder that weight loss is not as fast/easy as it once was, as the ease of not eating has decreased by a lot). I’m sure I could have probably done this faster by cutting more calories, but honestly, I just didn’t want to. I accepted the slower loss in exchange for extra cals. Its actually a good thing that you “caught” the gain and are making (it seems) an effort to address it now rather than later if/when the gain is much, much more. Remind yourself the eventual outcome if you continue on this path (an old Before Picture, perhaps?). Rid your place of the foods that are contributing to the gain, and replace with more appropriate foods if u are able. When the urge to eat when u are not truly hungry comes around, do something else: drink water, do some yoga, wash the dishes. If f u still want to eat 45 mins later, portion out a small-ish amount (like 1/3 cup or something) and commit to only eating that until another 45 mins has passed. Rinse and repeat. You know what to do. Its up to you to find it in yourself to do it.

    Eating slowly

I still eat fast so it's important that I measure/weight my food and when it's gone (in 10 minutes) no more.

    Eating slowly

I eat too fast but thankfully still very little, but I don't think I make it last 20 minutes except for a protein shake which I can make last an hour. I like my food hot, so I want to eat it while it's still hot.

    Lapband revision

I’m doing lap band to GB on dec. 17. I got my band in 2008 and it slipped in 2016. I originally got down to 190 with the band and up to 255 after it slipped. I had my bad refilled but it never worked the way it originally did and I was soooo hungry all the time, but eating was painful. My original surgeon’s PA whom I normally saw refused to talk about revisions. He said since I was so successful with the band that I could make it work again. Fast forward three years where I’ve gained 50 pounds and spent over $5k on medical weight loss diets, etc. I pleaded for help one more time and a different surgeon in the office agreed to help. I originally wanted the sleeve, but my (new) surgeon said she would only do GB after removing a lap band because of safety issues regarding scar tissue from the original surgery. She said if I got the sleeve she would have to staple through the scar tissue and it could cause leaking. I trust her judgment so I decided with GB. I too was having problem with pain while eating and I had acid reflux issues at night. I had my surgeon take the fill out of my band and feel 100% better, and oh so hungry. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!!

Am i gonna puke all the time??

Me too!! I'll add: sea sickness, going backwards on the subway, roller coasters, tire swings, seeing other people vomit == VOMIT. I definitely vomit, but it really, it's more like "spit-up" as a result of: eating too fast/too much, drinking too soon after eating, not chewing food well enough (in particular pork). The body-wracking, heaving kind of vomiting only happens when I have a serious dumping episode because of too much sugar. This has probably happened to me 4-5 times in the past 2+ years. All completely my doing, and all completely avoidable. So it would be safe to say, I think if you tend to be a puker, then you will likely remain so. If not, only time and actions will tell...

    Nervous and unsure

I had the gastric Sleeve in 2013, I went from 265 down to 155. Fast forward to today, I'm weighing in at 215 and now I'm going for a revision to the MGB (mini gastric bypass) Your sleeve definitely will stretch. I was able to "eat" real foods 2 months out with the sleeve, however, it was 2 teaspoons and I was done and that lasted through my 4-6 month mark. You will be able to enjoy a lot of different food but remember to make healthy choices and count calories, carbs and protein basically for the rest of your life. If not, the regain will happen. If you're on the fence about surgery but want to lose some weight, try a liquid diet for 7 days. It's called a sleeve reset. You will drop anywhere from 5-10 pounds. Nervous and unsure

I'm 10 months (almost 11 months) post op Loop DS which involves a sleeved stomach (this particular surgery also has an intestinal bypass as well as shortening your small intestines). I'm able to eat between 6-7 oz. If I eat 8oz I feel nauseous, so that's not a good idea. I've been able to eat 6 oz since about 5 months out. It upped to 7 at around 8 months out. Your stomach CAN stretch back out. I wouldn't advise doing it on purpose though because it kind of defeats the purpose of the surgery, but you won't necessarily be stuck eating small amounts forever. As to eating foods from other countries it honestly depends on how you tolerate certain foods. For example, I can't eat wheat anymore because I dump. And it's not worth feeling like that. Even the smallest trace amount of wheat in something gives me unbearable nausea for a good hour. Also, moderation is key. When it comes to drinking with food they tell you not to because it makes the food go through you too fast and then you'll be hungry again sooner. Farther out I don't think it'll be a big deal if you drink on a special occasion but that fluid is going to take up space and won't be able to fit as much food.

    Too much weight losd

I have been struggling with intermittent severe nausea during the 18 months after WLS. My weight last month dipped to 117.6, but now I am back to 120.6. Every time I have had an extended bout of nausea, which has lasted days, my weight drops because I have trouble eating even 50% of my necessary daily calories. My nutritionist has me drinking Ensure Plus when I can't eat, eating creamy soups, oatmeal, avocado, nuts, and other healthy fatty foods. She also said I should have a small meal before bedtime each night. I need to stabilize my weight so that I hover around 124-125 lbs. But we can't figure out why I'm having prolonged nausea and how to remedy it. So far, I have not tested as having malnutrition. I take vitamins daily. My one concern is that I am a bit protein deficient right now even though I take protein supplements every day.

    Not losing weight

Thanks Hop Scotch. I guess logically it’s just not making sense to me. Low calories, low fat, exercise...you would think it would be falling off! Take surgery out of the equation....I’m still overweight and have weight to loose. At 500-600 calories you’d think the first 20 would come off fast. I understand when you get closer you your goal weight it will be slow. I’m not discouraged...I’m not going to stop what I am doing. I do feel healthy and good. I will say that I still feel a bit hungry after I eat sometimes. Just Thought if anyone else was finding a slower weight loss maybe they found some thing that helped speed it up a tad😁 wishful thinking I suppose.

Well the tearing is inside, not outside. At my abdominal muscles. If I get up too fast or attempt to tie my right shoe, its absolutely brutal. I just have to wait it out I guess. Thanks for your suggestion. I certainly appreciate your advice.

    Feeling the guilt

My surgeons nutrition guidelines is probably similar to yours where mashed potatoes aren't allowed until you've lost 70% of excess weight (I've lost just slightly over that at 71%). But every surgeons guidelines are different and many allow mashed potatoes in puree stage. Not the greatest choice imo because it's really filling, but doesn't have much nutritional value. But it tastes good, I agree. However, when you do get off track, and it WILL happen, beating yourself up over it isn't the right way to go about things. The more you beat yourself up the more you stress and the more you may fall back into that bad habit and then start the cycle over again. A better tactic to take is just to get back on track because it's highly unlikely that small instance of indulgence is going to have much of an effect on you weight loss. I'm 10 months out so the very few times I DO indulge myself I try to fit those indulgences into my plan via counting carbs, sugar, sodium, and fat (my plan doesn't count calories) so that every now and then I can fit something like a cookie or a CarbSmart Ice Cream bar in as a snack so that I don't indulge in things that are worse for me like chips or cake or a muffin or a donut (none of which I've had since I started dieting 19 months ago). After surgery I DID notice that I'm even more conscious of my choices as I don't want to be the one that fails this or puts weight back on because I took the surgery route BECAUSE I couldn't do this on my own. I've notices, at least for me, that it's easier to say no. My family eats out a LOT. Like 3-4x a week. They ask me constantly if I want something and 90% of the time I say no. I only say yes if they go to the Mexican restaurant that I like and they get me a mini taco or an enchilada (I eat half) and they only do that once every other week. Though they have gotten a to go order of Chicken Marsala a few times (3x) since my surgery from one of my favorite restaurants and it has steamed veggies ala carrots and zucchini and my Mom gave me some of it (there is a lot and I don't eat much so it worked out lol). For me, the way I eat has to be sustainable. This is the way of eating that I plan to stick with so that I don't put that weight back on. So everything I do I do with the mind that this is permanent. I don't miss fast food because it always made me feel slightly nauseous after eating and made me feel bad about myself so that makes it easier for me to say no. Sticking to the plan isn't always easy. The farther you get out and the closer to your goal weight I think is probably where you will struggle most. For me, Thanksgiving was a day I wanted to indulge and it was only me telling myself 'you came so far and lost so much, don't ruin it' that made me take smaller portions to indulge. I had 1TBS of gravy, 1 TBS of stuffing, 1 TBS of mashed potatoes, and 1/16 of a pumpkin pie (very tiny sliver, but it was delicious). That was my Thanksgiving indulgence and I lost 3 pounds when I weighed myself the following week so not going overboard helped in that I believe. I'm proud of how far I've come and that I'm only 26 pounds from my own personal goal (41 from the doctors goal as they want me to get to 165). You are doing great with you weight loss and use that guilt you felt and think back on it when you get tempted so it'll make it easier to say no or make you even more conscious of what you put in your mouth, but if again, if you do indulge just get back on track and don't beat yourself up too hard.

    Up All Night

That happened to me around 1 month from eating refried beans too quick or too much. If you search on here you will find a lot of us describe it as the "foamies" or slime. It's mucous. I would often have that and then most of the time would throw up a little bit of food with it. That made me feel better since I would also get really cold and have the shakes. The whole ordeal made me exhausted. It has happened maybe 4-5 times in almost 2 years. From eating too fast, not chewing and once from something that had too much sugar or fat. I have since been able to eat full sugar ice cream or candy (not endorsing that but it works for me and it is only ever a few bites) and go months without having a reaction. So for me it was just random. edit-- after these episodes I always would go back to just liquids to give my pouch a rest and work up to yogurt after 18-24 hours. By 48 hours I was back to normal.

    How do I know?

I am wrestling with understanding if what I am doing is correct post gastric bypass. In the first few weeks the weight moved not very fast but faster than now. For the last 5 weeks I am losing on average between 1.5 to 1.75 pounds per week. I spoke to the dietician who first told me it was because I do not eat enough carbs and I should have rice cakes and then when I followed what she said (by adding a half of a rice cake a day) but there was no change she said I understood her incorrectly, which I do not understand as she put it in writing, and should use another plan and eat no carbs even though the other plan says start the day with toast or whole wheat crackers, I am allergic to gluten. If I am a slow loser then I just want to know if what I am doing is correct as I have pretty much started to do my own plan for the last two weeks. Is the amount I am losing post gastric bypass slow, is it a signal that something is wrong and how will I know? I am sorry for the length of this post. I have requested a different dietician and this will be discussed in January which means I am on my own for now.
  16. Let's see, a few things: 1. You may have a few uncomfortable days when you're wondering what you got yourself into. Don't worry, it gets better quickly. 2. Being "full" will feel different after surgery and you'll want to learn to recognize that feeling quickly. Overeating or eating too fast after surgery makes you REALLY miserable. 3. You'll only be able to eat a tiny amount at first. Just getting enough water and protein in will be tough. Don't worry, you'll be able to eat more soon. 4. Stick as closely as you can to the eating plan your bariatric team gives you. 5. About a month after surgery, you might stop losing weight. It happens to almost everyone and it's called the "three-week stall" here on the forum. Don't worry, you'll start losing again. 6. Don't buy a lot of clothes as you start losing weight. You'll be blowing through sizes really quickly. Just get a few inexpensive pieces until you know what size you are eventually going to be. 7. Don't compare your progress to other people. We have a different metabolism, dieting history, lifestyle, etc. Some people will lose faster than you and some slower. It's all good. 8. You will definitely reach a point when you can have your favorite foods again, although likely in small portions and not very often. Some things might taste different after surgery. Just a few tips! Hope all goes well with your surgery. 🤗

    Oh the gas pain

fat will do that to me - or eating too fast. Or some meats just don't sit well sometimes. I ate half a reuben sandwich once and felt the same way. I eventually threw it up - and at the time I was at least three years out of surgery. BUT - those have a lot of fat, and corned beef may be one of those meats my stomach can't always deal with not sure that sounds like true dumping - that usually also involves racing heartbeat, sweating, diarrhea, chills. I think it either didn't agree with you, or you might have just eaten it too fast.

    Oh the gas pain

That’s one benefit of the surgery for many of us: if we make a wrong choice, push to fast or detour from our path we’ll pay for it.... big time. And it ain’t pleasant. Hope you feel better soon.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Yep, I too had the band and figured out how to work around it but also lived with throwing up and heartburn. the years of throwing up caused major scar tissue. So I look at this as my second chance. No eating fast. No over eating. And if I catch myself getting into a bad place, stop it immediately!
  20. Things are going fast. Lightspeed, so to say. On-call tonight again. I'm tired. Going to shower, eat something and hoping for a quiet night.

    Surgery postponed due to Covid

I am right there with you. I have wanted surgery since 2008 and at the beginning of 2020 finally got insurance that would cover it. Jan 2 I called the doctors office about starting up the process, and I have spent the last 11 months jumping through all the hoops. I was approved the weekend before Thanksgiving. I stopped the medicines she told me I'd need to stop for 2 weeks before surgery (including my pain management meds for my joints) and started on my pre-op liver shrinking diet. I had been told that once insurance approves, you should be ready as fast as you can because surgery is generally 2 weeks max 1 month out after that. I eagerly awaited my phone call to schedule surgery, and planned on having a last Thanksgiving meal with stuffing (my favorite! just lower portion sizes). Thanksgiving came and went and the phone call never came. After checking in with the surgeon's office, apparently due to COVID, there will be no surgeries scheduled for at least 30 days. This puts my surgery date into next year. This screwed up the time off I've been saving for this all year, my finances because I'll be dealing with a brand new out of pocket amount starting Jan 1. I'm angry at all the people who are traveling for the holidays, who don't wear masks, and who aren't taking this seriously. I'm angry at my doctor for delaying me 3 months in the summer because my A1C was 7.1 instead of 7.0 (!!!!!) I'm just angry and sad. Right now, mostly angry and feeling hopeless, which is a new combo for me. I've stopped caring what I'm eating and logging my food. I'm eating maybe one meal a day of junk and binging on diet soda. I'm not exercising. I'm really wondering what the hell is the point here. I feel like I've been waiting forever and like I'm never going to get this tool and maybe I should just do like a teenager and just get an eating disorder like normal people.
  23. So I was all prepared and ready to be on my way to the hospital around 8:30am. Doing my final check and my phone rings. It my doctors office calling to postpone my surgery for today. Was told the hospital I was going to if there was an emergency they didn’t have and extra ICU rooms available. I am fasting an extra day and starving. I will hear back from them hopefully first thing in the morning. It’s all in Gods hands. Hopefully all goes well for everyone else 🙏🏾

    November 2020 sleevers

Well I had my first bites of food tonight since late October. 2 week pre op liquid diet plus 4 week post op liquid diet made for a loooooong stretch. For my first food I scrambled an egg. No problems at all eating it, def felt full afterwards. Was so nice to not have soup for dinner. I am 73 lbs down (15 post surgery) and coming up on my one month anniversary on the 10th. Not losing super fast, but happy to be where I am!

    December 2020

Hello! I had my gastric sleeve on 12/01. Overall, things are going well! When I woke up from my anesthesia, I am pretty sure I was half delirious and obnoxious, but I only remember bits and pieces. The first night was pretty tough. The first time they got me up to walk, I was overcome with nausea and thought I would pass out, only made it a few steps. BUT, after that, it was very good progress and soon I was walking all the way down the hall and back. I have not had to take any nausea medicine since being home, and I only take Tylenol for pain rather than the prescription opioid they gave me. Also taking anti-blood clot injections twice a day, and oxygen at night. At home, I have been good at hitting my liquid goals. The protein goal was a little harder for me, and I had to work my way up to hitting it for the first time yesterday. Each day the pain gets a little better. This morning I was able to sleep on my side for the first time in a week, which felt wonderful, since I'm not really a back sleeper. My stomach wounds look pretty gnarly. There is one that is indented into my fat, and I now call it my second belly button! Haha. One weird side effect is that my hands suddenly looked 20 years older. The skin was all wrinkly and loose. I put some firming cream on them, and they are doing better now. All I can think about is food. It is everywhere around me. I watch TV and see a pizza commercial. I look at the internet and see recipes. My husband cooks his dinner, and the smell is so tantalizing. I keep thinking if I could only have one bite, it would be the best bite in the world. I think I just miss the flavors since I am on liquids. Finally, I am a bit amazed and worried about how fast I am losing weight. Of course, that was the whole point of this, but I can't help but wonder if it is healthy, since it is basically starvation on a liquid diet. I am down 17 pounds in 8 days (includes the 2-days pre-op on liquid diet). Eek! I suppose it will stop or slow down soon. Well, thanks for listening to my story! Good luck to everyone else.
