    Sept. 2010 Bandsters !!!

hey everyone :smile2: down 10lbs so far and i was banded 9/27 super excited but i know this journey may get tough. i went to the movies today and almost broke. the smell of the popcorn and my lack of enthusiasm for my protein shakes/sugar free jello/pops/broth did not mix well. i asked if i could smell the popcorn. i figured if i couldn't much on the stuff i could at least get a good whiff of it. sad isn't it? but alas, i hunkered down and took a few sips of water to help the craving pass along and found myself more interested in the previews than the popcorn within minutes. i think that's what will be the hardest for me along the way; getting through the cravings. here's a tip: try reading veganism books or vegetarian books along this journey. i noticed that when i went through my veggie phase [sadly it was just a phase ] i read up on the stuff and found it alot easier to not overeat and stay away from the unhealthy junk because i was reading information that explained what our bodies truly need and what various factors in our day to day lives [media, association, etc] make us feel we need. i hope to become a veggie again one day, but please don't think im trying to convert you. it really is informative. it's a bit more "aggressive" when it comes to shedding light on the facts of our nutritional needs. just a thought or suggestion for those willing to look into it. good luck fellow Sept. bandsters!
  2. just thought i'd put in my two cents about the 100 pound loss question. i honestly don't believe any of mine was luck. i work my BUTT off. i work out, on average, 2 hours a day...and it's not just two hours of walking. i do lap swimming 35 minutes at 5:30 am three times a week; i take an hour of zumba 2 nights a week; i walk the dogs for at least 45 minutes on those days; i walk during my lunch break for a half hour every day unless it's raining; and i run between 3-5 miles on the days i don't have zumba. i exercise seven days a week and have since surgery. i also eat between 650-850 calories most days, keeping my carbs very low (generally between 30-50 g a day). those calories and carbs include everything - vitamins and calcium included. i'm very, very strict. now that i'm 7 pounds away from goal, i'm starting to incorporate more carbs into my diet - mostly fruit - but honestly, for the first 10 months, i rarely had any fruit, bread, pasta, etc because they were just way too carby. i'm a vegetarian, who has learned to eat more fish, so my diet really consists of veggies and low carb sources of protein only.

    Daily diet

It's more of a challenge pre-op. You still have a full sized stomach. A typical day for me is a Protein shake for breakfastt with 1 scoop of Protein powder, ¼ - ½ a cup of FAGE 0% greek yogurt and what ever flavoring I like. Sometimes that's a tbsp of almond butter, today it was a tbsp of shredded coconut. I'm vegetarian. lunch may be a veggie burger, or a small salad with black Beans and hardboiled egg with salsa or vinegar /oil for dressing. snack is an ounce of nuts dinner is 1 cup of either lentil or vegetable Soup. Depending on my protein count at that point I may add a scoop of unflavored protein powder and a dash of sriracha sauce. In between I'm drinking Water. I'm one of the few people who get full on water. Pre-op the easiest thing to do would be to try for clean Proteins and veg. Cut out sodas and as much processed and fast foods as possible.
  4. Hello all! I need help in finding a high protein source that is low in calories. I am a vegetarian and, once I get to eat real food again, I do not want to use all of my calories meeting my protein intake requirements (e.g., via shakes). Is there a low calorie protein source either powder, liquid, anything! Thanks in advance!
  5. I've done a slightly modified version of the 5 day pouch test (because I'm a vegetarian), and it really does work. The first 1 - 2 days are horrible, but it really isn't bad after that; and the benefits are great. If you're really struggling, I'd give it a try!
  6. I am 6 weeks on Wed. Trying to get most of my protein via food. Turkey works well (deli and ground), cheese, tuna, and eggs mostly. Have had baked chicken once. Tried ground sirloin, did not work so avoiding beef and also have not tried pork. Actually, my main food addictions were meats and sugar. Now anything sweet tastes awful and meats also are unappealing. I may end up a vegetarian yet as the things that taste best to me are different types of beans and cheese. The good news is my A1C and cholesterol are way down so that's a huge win. I am able to sleep without my cpap, am down a size or 2 depending on the clothes, and can walk distances that made my back hurt previously. So having some foods taste bad is a price I will pay happily although I was very frustrated by it initially. Oh, and not sure of total weight loss as I only weigh at the doctors but I think it's around 40 lbs counting my 2 week pre-op. All in all, still learning and adjusting, but feel I am ahead of the curve and on the right road now.

    Any vegetarian breakfast ideas?

I'm just a regular vegetarian. I eat dairy and eggs but not meat fish or chicken. I've made the eggs in a muffin tin, they are very yummy! I can only take one day of eggs before the sight of them makes me sick.

    Any Vegetarian Banders?

I finally feel like I am in a group that I can really relate to. I am vegan because I lost no weight on the Standard American Diet. I try to eat often and I drink carrot juice twice a day with my essential oils and only juice veggies sometimes I put an apple into the juicing to cater to a sweet tooth. I was told not to juice and as a result did not get in the veggies my body needed and eating meat did not go down none of it. Up went my cholesterol and my lipids sooooooo drastic action was needed. I have a normal cholesterol and normal lipids. Fortune is with me because my general practioner is vegetarian since 1973. So far since May 25th 2007 up to now I have lost 30 pounds. Two years I did not lose more than five pounds since my banding. Going vegan is what helped me get more nutrition and weight loss. I eat 85% raw and 15% cooked vegetables.
  9. I was so disheartened to read about maximizing weight loss by limiting carbs. I'm a lifelong vegetarian and I never met a protein source that I liked (except pizza!). I have choked down soy protein for decades, eaten tofu, edamame and cottage cheese until it has come out of my ears, all in the name of good health. But it was okay because I had my satisfying carbs to turn to, to make it all worthwhile. I had prepared myself to give up bread, popcorn, sweets etc. I don't know much about low-carb eating because I didn't want to start something that I couldn't commit to long term. Do you still talk about "net carbs" so that 100% whole-wheat pasta would have a much lower carb count that regular pasta? I do love whole grains... I hate to sound like a whiner, but it feels like I'm spending my days chasing protein, and there's no room for things I love, like fruit and the occasional pretzel. I am prepared and happy to make sacrifices to reduce my weight. But eating is a pleasurable activity, and I'm ready for a little pleasure!:drama::blah::Cry: Thanks for letting me get that off my chest! I'm ready to act my age again.

    Any Sleevers That Are Vegan?

I am interested in becoming a vegetarian and if I can, a vegan. Realistically now is not the time to do this because I need to get the protein in, but I wondered if anyone has become a vegetarian or vegan a year or so after surgery... after the bulk of the weight was lost. Any feedback would be great

    Any Sleevers That Are Vegan?

I made the change to vegetarian about 3 weeks ago and am in love wtih my new lifestyle. I am still eating fish and cheese to get in the protien- I have never had tofu but know that I must try it and other forms of plant based protein- hopefully once a taste is aquired from that I hope to come off of the dairy- It's good to know that it can be done even with the surgery.
  12. First if you are overeating and throwing up and continuing to eat, you probably need therapy like counseling. Second, I am a fish eating vegetarian and I eat a lot of beans to get protein. Beans are probably the most nutritious food there is and they are basically almost free! Especially if you buy the bags of dry beans and throw them in the crock pot! The thing is I overate like a fiend and thats why I was obese...now I eat tiny meals of only really good fresh (often more expensive) food and I think I save money...a restaurant meal is probably five servings for me now...good luck, a lot of this is learning to be honest with ourselves.

    Beans, etc.

But they are complex carbs, they aren't going to sit and turn to glucose. I'm vegetarian, most of my Protein comes from beans, it hasn't adversely effected my weight loss in the least.True, but pure protein first. Just quoting the rationale of the NUT Beans are protein. Protein with carbs though. For example a c of kidney beans has 13g protein but 37g carbs. Though I suppose you could subtract the 11g fiber for 26g net carbs. Not arguing the fact that they are VERY nutritionally advantageous, just saying why a nutritionist might prefer grilled chicken for a non vegetarian client (22g protein and 1g carbs for 4 oz)

15 bean soup / Morningstar Farms

I'm really hoping that I'll like it, so that I could make that and have a bunch of ready-made meals. I'm not fond of cooking meat when I'm at home. I'm lazy about cooking unless I happen to be cooking for several people. Plus, cooking for just myself makes me paranoid about the doneness of the meat, so I don't enjoy eating it. Sometimes, I really think that I could easily become a vegetarian.

Protein and calorie deficits after surgery

I'm with the others. My surgeon is the leader of a practice that's a Centre of Excellence certified by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). And Protein shakes and protein powders (especially in the early months post-op) are recommended for all WLS patients as supplements to protein-rich food. Below is an excerpt from the ASMBS Web site describing acceptable sources of protein for patients post-op (including shakes and even bars). Based on this, I think your doctor is really uneducated about what's necessary. I would recommend you ignore his ill-considered advice and eat a helluva lot more protein than you're getting now. Nutrition (food and supplements) and Fluids Healthy lifestyle choices give the best results for health and Quality of Life after surgery. Protein-rich foods are important, with patients advised to take in 60-100g of protein daily, depending on their medical conditions, type of operation and activity level. The ASMBS warns patients to avoid excessive carbohydrate intake, such as starchy foods (breads, pastas, crackers, refined cereals) and sweetened foods (Cookies, cakes, candy, or other sweets). Limiting carbohydrates to 50 grams per day or less helps avoid rebound hunger problems which can lead to weight regain. Q: How should I get my protein? With shakes? Bars? What if I’m a vegetarian? A: There are many options even for those with special dietary needs or preferences. Your dietitian can provide additional information on protein sources. meats, eggs, dairy products, and Beans are common protein sources in everyday foods. Protein extracts made from soy, brown rice and whey are commonly sold in stores. Protein Shakes or bars may offer additional ways to meet your protein needs. You may find it helpful to calculate your daily protein intake to be sure you’re not falling short. As you are able to tolerate more regular foods, you get a higher portion of the requirement during regular meals and supplements become less necessary. Q: What happens if I don’t take in enough protein? A: The body needs additional protein during the period of rapid weight loss to maintain your muscle mass. Protein is also required for your metabolism to occur. If you don’t provide enough protein in your diet, the body will take its protein from your muscles and you can become frail. http://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery
  16. Hi everyone, my name is Kayla. I'm a 30 year old musician, singer, wife, and mother. My Gastric sleeve procedure is scheduled for 4/27. I wasn't always as big as I am. (HW:314) in fact, when I met my husband nearly 12 years ago, I weighed 129lbs. At 5'8" that's kind of the low end weight-wise, but I wasn't healthy. Once I felt safe and loved, I let go and started eating again... Like mad. I ate on 150lbs in two years... I went up and down from there. So for the last decade, I've been hovering, on average, between 280 and 300. I did get down to 220 after becoming a vegetarian for a year and a half after a bad case of food poisoning (as with many of us, I have some issues that manifest in my strange relationship with food). When I got pregnant, my body demanded meat. By delivery, I was 305lbs. I dropped about 20lbs and put it back on. My body began to feel major consequences of all the weight. I stopped playing quidditch and indoor soccer which I had done up to last year. Finally, as my son began running faster and faster, I decided I wanted to keep up with him and to do the stuff he wanted to do... I went into cooper bariatric on October 22nd, 2015. They told me I had to be nicotine free for 4 months, I quit on the 23rd. Since then, I have completed all the hoop-jumping and here I am, drinking only Protein shakes and Clear liquids. As a performer, it's hard to look at myself and then present what I feel is inadequate, to others. I have been learning, albeit slowly, to love myself. I wrote a song to fluff myself up. If you want to hear it or see the video, I'm happy to post a link, but I don't want to assume. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. For me it was also the cabbage Soup diet... The banana day! haha! What the heck? No one has mentioned Atkins here yet I don't think.. I'm vegetarian so didn't do this, but my hubby would sit with a giant plate of cheesy eggs, ham, and greasy bacon for Breakfast, and big fatty steaks for lunch and dinner and wonder why he never lost weight. A heart attack waiting to happen!

    Are you vegetarian?

I feel best when I am eating a sugar-free, whole food, plant based diet, but I'm not sure how well that would work with my sleeve. Any sleeved vegetarians here? I have not followed such a diet in years, but when I did, I had tons of energy and felt great.
  19. You said in another post that you aren't feeling restriction from things like oatmeal and yogurt. I didn't feel restriction with those foods either! I actually went thru a phase where I thought something was wrong with my sleeve, and I posted here. Others said just wait until you are eating solid proteins--you will definitely feel the restriction. They were so right! I will bet if you eat some solid protein like chicken and some veg that you will realize that your sleeve is working. I'm a vegetarian so I feel restriction with soy protein like veggie meatballs with melted cheese or beans with cheese. Don't do the slider foods like pizza and deep-fried fish. Those won't fill you up the same (you should be eating bread or fried foods now anyhow, if ever). Give it a try and work with a nutritionist if you can. No one is trying to bring you down but you've got to give the sleeve a fair shake and eat the proper foods before saying it doesn't work. Seriously, there are a ton of people here who when they were eating mushies and purees thought something wasn't right with their sleeve. Maybe this will get you on plan and saving you thousands in diagnostic tests. It's worth a try....
  20. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I saw another thread where you are telling people that they should eat Frosted Mini Wheats to fill up. That's just not good advice. You really need protein, and it doesn't need to be expensive. I'm not trying to upset you more...just trying to give some ideas. You can get Greek yogurt on sale, or chicken thighs and bake them or cook in the crockpot (I am a vegetarian, but it sounds like you eat meat). Some people even like canned chicken, which isn't expensive. You can get salmon patties and string cheese. I am saving a lot on my food budget bc I'm eating so much less and almost never eat out. I hope that you can get some answers to your issues and wish you all the best.

    Bariatric Vegetarian Life

Quorn is vegetarian, at least the ones sold in the US. Some products do contain milk and egg. But all products are safe for vegetarians. The vegan products have even been accredited by the Vegan Society.

    Bariatric Vegetarian Life

Thanks Berry. I made this group because as an ovo vegetarian and picky eater it is hard for me to get the healthy protein foods. I can eat/deal with very few foods at a time and get sick of it in months. As the only vegetarian in the wls group a t office I didn't have the support or knowledge to succeed in the weight loss journey. If I knew then what I know now it would be different. I just don't want othets to make same wrong choices I did. Vegetarian/vegan/meat eaters....we can all be there supporting eachother.[emoji16] Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I was a vegetarian for a long time (10+ years) and ate myself to well over 350 lbs, so that surely wasn't my real solution. Are there people with complications and regrets after surgery? Sure, but I'm going to bet that percentage-wise, there are a lot more people who are morbidly obese with complications and sad emotions related to their obesity than there are people who are post-VSG with complications and regrets. When I was in your situation, I was a lot more worried about where I'd be in 15-20 years without surgery (likely dead) than in 15-20 years after surgery. The vast majority of people who have this surgery have no complications. I was one of that group. I never had even a twinge of regret, not even upon waking up from surgery or during the first days of recovery. This was easily the best decision I have ever made for myself.

Still Attend Support Group Meetings as a Vet?

@@MichiganChic - I'm only 6 mths in, but I also view the support groups as a sort of pay it forward. I remember in my pre-op stage I liked hearing from Vets. I also think since I took a somewhat unusual approach to bariatric diets because of being a vegetarian with food allergies that It may be helpful to any other people on vegetarian diets to know that it can be done. meat eaters don't realize it but listening people talk sometimes all your hear is "meat, meat, meat." If you don't know any better this can be discouraging. I just happen to be the heard headed person who never takes "No" for an answer.
