    5 days post op PAIN

I have no idea why I am so bruised up...All I know was that I had a complex surgery(revision).Lap band to bypass with hiatal hernia.

    5 days post op PAIN

The pain is crazy. The incisions areas all hurt.My insides hurts.I went to a supermarket in my neighborhood that is never crowded so that I could walk.BAD IDEA....in one of the aisles I was bent over in pain....thank goodness my father drove me to and from....I am no longer gonna try to be a super woman! I can't even wear a bra ...every incision hurts. My stomach is so puffy and sore and discolored.I am currently lounging in my adjustable temperpedic bed watching SVU reruns.I am in a lot of pain to say the least. Look at my stomach!!!!!!! Revision surgery all in one is tougher than any other procedure.
  3. Yes, this will be a revision. The lap band didn’t work well for me but it’s still in there.

    Lap Band 11 years out

I got to that point about 4 years in or so. Nothing I did would get me to stay under the 300 mark. Ultimately, I was revised to the bypass. My surgeon advised me that the Lapband was over hyped and under performed, that 2 of the largest manufacturers have sold off or stopped making new or replacement parts for their versions of the bands. When they removed the band, even though I didn't have any major issues going to the revision, the band was 100% encapsulated in scar tissue and took my surgical team more than 3 times longer to remove it than it should have taken. I'd hate to think what would have happened if I left it in!

What made you pick VSG instead of DS?

I admit that I am not diligent enough with the massive Vitamin regimen that is required with a malabsorptive procedure. I had to choose what I could live with vs. what I knew I would fail miserably at. Losing weight is one thing, believe me, I get that. Living with vitamin counts of 20-30 pills a day is absurd in my little world, and there is no way I would do it for the rest of my life. Those same DS'ers told me I would fail miserably with a VSG only revision from my band. I had a BMI of right at 50 starting my VSG journey, and after 10 months, 138lbs lost, a BMI of 22, I'd like to say that I am by all means a success with VSG as a stand alone procedure. Plus, I wanted to have another child. Dealing with deficiencies or too high vitamin levels (which occurs with DS'ers as well) was something that I refused to deal with in pregnancy. I refused to have RNY also. The long term complications and regain stats with RNY were not in my best interest. I'm 2 years out, maintained my loss for a year before pregnancy weight started creeping in, and today myself and the baby are thriving. I do not have to take in any additional Vitamins or supplements, and have zero issues eating enough calories to support my body and another developing human. Best wishes in your research. It is very difficult to decide. I had to look at what I was willing to live with 10, 15, 20 years and beyond, not just what could get the weight off the quickest.
  6. The cost of revision surgery here in the states can vary, but I would say that the typical cost is around $18,000, which includes surgeon's fee, anesthesia, and a one-night hospital stay, but all that is negotiated really with the doctor that you end up going with. Many people go to Mexico, where there are reputable doctors and decent hospitals and the cost is much lower. Do a search for "cost" at the main forum, and I'm sure you'll find lots of discussions about price. There is even a forum for people who had their surgery in Mexico. Here is my thread on my cost: http://www.verticals...__fromsearch__1 Here is another thread I found: http://www.verticals...__1#entry358683 I'm sure you can find others as well by doing a search for "bill" or "price" or "cost."
  7. I agree that it probably has a lot to do with your insurance. For my band, I had to be on a 3 month medically supervised weight loss program (that was a joke), I had to have a psych eval (which was a joke) and EKG. For my revision, I actually went in for an appointment to get a fill because I was not getting full off of my cup size portion. When I went in they found that my esophogus had dilated. They took 1 cc out of my band and sent me home with not much information. I called the surgeon's office and set up an appointment with him. He sent me for an upper GI and found that my band had slipped. After that, it took them a week to submit the paperwork to the insurance company. It was approved in two days and my surgery date was set for May 30. The day of surgery, they made me take a pregnancy test, drew blood, and did an EKG and took me straight to surgery. I am so thankful I did not have to go through all of the hoops again. I'm 3 days out and am feeling much better.
  8. I can tell you that it normally has to be found medically necessary or a serious problem with the band. Not just the fact that you may not have lost enough weight. Just know that it is very hard to find anyone to accept Humana for weight loss surgery and especially for a revision, if they cover revisions at all. And yes, any good program is also going to make you go through their requirements the same as any new patient, unless you are considering using the same surgeon.
  9. I was in the same boat as you not long ago as many others are here. Be sure to check out the lap band to sleeve revision forum and insurance forum as both are helpful. I too had the lap band put in in 2008 (see "My Story" on my Profile Page). I just had revision surgery eight weeks ago to the sleeve. I have Kaiser, and I didn't have to go through classes for the revision, and they covered everything. I had self-paid for the lap band, but I would have qualified through Kaiser back in 2008 if I had wanted to wait for six months while I took the classes. (Classes were once a week for six months in Los Angeles back then.) I was impatient and ended up self paying for the band. I would make an appointment with your Primary Care Provider and ask him/her to refer you to the barriatric program. I think just having the lap band in makes you qualify for having it out at the least and having revision surgery if you want it. I wouldn't think you have to qualify again. At the very minimum, you'll probably have to have an Upper G.I. so that they can see where the band is and what it is doing. You'll also have some blood tests, etc., prior to surgery and possibly an endoscopy.
  10. Hi, I am having my revision on May 6th. I am 162 pounds and have had my band for about 16 months and it has been pretty rocky. I have a slow leak which caused them to fill the band so much I couldn't hold down water and this went on for months. I was throwing up constantly, woke up crying with heartburn in the night, and feel all my food go down no matter how much I chew. I was worried about losing too much weight and looking sick, however, my doctor and others in this situation assure me that your body plateaus at a certain weight and will stop or slow down. He told me I may loose another 20-25 pounds which is ok by me. I will take the chance to be rid of this discomfort. Good luck with you decision.

    Updated Weight Change Timeline

Hope the Port revision surgery wasn't too bad!! Great job on the weight loss!!! keep up the fantastic job!!
  12. The most weight I lost with the band was pre-band and 2 months post band. The the weight started coming back on. It made me gag, puke, and the band itself shows on the outside. At one point the port turned and was difficult to fill. The main thing...my appretite was not suppressed. My stomach never felt full...just me gullet to the point of drooling. I have the original band whatever it was called, not the newer version. I have spoke to people who had the band and have had the GS revision and all are pleased. I guess I will have to play the waiting game. But going back to square one just makes no sense to me.

    obstructed

hey guys, i had surgery 2-6-8....but was completely obstructed by the next day...spitting up my own saliva. called my doc who said come right in...he did not prefill, but was able to get 6cc of air and saline out (with great exertion on his part) i did better but reobstructed that night.... kept thinking it was post op swelling, i slept sitting up, did all that i could. My surgeon had arrainged for me to be admitted that night (2-7-8) but i declined to try and work on it overnight. needless to say a full obstruction (two of them now) is not going away on its on. I had a revision surgery 2-8-8 with immediate relief. my doc has done over 1,300 cases, and i was only the 6th obstruction he'd had...mine ended up being due to an abberrant bundle of veins that were hidden under the fat surrounding my stomach. He carefully dissected these out, and i am now home with only normal postop pain...which is not bad at all. Moral of the story, go back immediately if vomitting post op..... all i can say is that my surgeon was compassionate and quick to work with me.....the yucky part i am self pay i'm gonna try and see if my insurance will cover the second admission as a complication....cross your fingers... i'm banded and able to drink fluids now wooo hooo amanda
  14. I am a band-to-bypass revision patient, too! I have been using rogaine for a couple of years due to thin, fine hair and I was really worried about hair loss after surgery. I actually had a 2-part surgery because my band was removed a year ago last December and my bypass wasn't until April 2015. I had expected hair loss right around the time of my revision because it was 16 weeks post-op, which is when I lose my hair, but I didn't have much. After revision, however, at exactly 16 weeks I lost a lot of hair. I had been taking Biotin and using rogaine up to that point, and I do believe that it helped my hair come back much faster than it has in the past. Not only that, but it's now wavy! That was an unexpected perk! Honestly, that short period where I had "bad hair" was completely worth it, though. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Congratulations on taking back control of your health. You won't be disappointed.
  15. It is normal to have second thoughts. I think we all did. Just go over all of the pros and cons again in your head. Or write them down on paper! You have to know yourself. Are you willing to work to lose the weight? You will have to measure your food, chew thoroughly, eat slower and make good food choices. Exercise is important, as is doctor follow-up care. Read through all of the threads here because some people have revised their band to RNY. It is a life-changing decision, so make sure to make the best choice for YOU.
  16. Hi! I have had the band for the last 6 years. I lost almost 100 but developed an esophageal pouch. Once my band was loose over the course of 2 years I put all my weight back on. I've tried everything to control my eating and lose weight. I've also tried pills etc. Also found out I have a non functioning thyroid. I am having my band removed and sleeve performed June 4th. Looking forward to having band removed! I have heard from my surgeon and other patients that you don't lose near as quickly with a revision. I'm willing to try though.
  17. I'm having a revision from the band to bypass. Focus on the two week pre-op diet. You will be amazed some of the weight and other changes during this period.

Surgery Tomorrow Scared To Death Low Bmi

Thanks for the info. Yes had thyroid checked. Just keep gaining every year. Band didn't work so revision to sleeve. Can lose it but comes right back. Thanx guys
  19. I was banded with plication in August 2012. I have had two fills so far. I have not lost any weight since November. I follow my diet, exercise etc. Now I am having pain in my stomach and left side around to my back. It gets worse when I eat. I went throught Dr. Wilkenfeld in Conroe and am finding out that he doesn't really care about you after your surgery. Is it too soon to consider another surgeon and possibly a revision to sleeve? Will another surgeon even see me? I wish I knew what I know now about him before using him and having the lapband. He talked me out of the sleeve and I wish I had just changed doctor's then.
  20. I am having a band to sleeve revision on July 7th in Tijuana with Dr. Ortiz. My preop diet started today (three weeks). I'd love to hear how you are doing.

    Alternate Surgery After Band Removal?

My honest opinion... Tell your friends and family to go to hell. They are not living your life, you are. It's none of their business. Repositioned/replaced bands have a 70% chance of slipping again. I don't know why any good surgeon would reposition or replace a band anyway given the stats. More surgeries? Get the sleeve. Go to a GOOD surgeon, someone who has low leak stats and happy patients. I am a band to sleeve revision and the band sucks. Sleeves rock.
  22. I'm probably not being very objective about the sleeve right now. I think it could be an option for someone who wants to revise because their band was so problematic, but if you're thinking of revising because of disappointing weight loss, I'm not sure you'd be all that much better off.

    My F'n Band Slipped.

If your stomach is in good enough shape at the time of removal (if your insurance will pay for removal and your surgeon is willing), you might be able to do it all in one surgery and have the band removed and change to another procedure with only paying your surgeon for the revision to the other procedure. The insurance company pays for the OR and band removal part, you pay for the sleeve or RNY. I've heard of it being done in the past. Might be worth asking the question, if you are interested in another procedure. My PCP also told me that depending on the way they write it up you can sometimes get switched to a new procedure even if the insurance company says one per customer. They are taking the band out due to complications, not due to you not following the rules. There is a difference. Medical need, all that. But we know how much insurance companies love to say no.

    Getting closer… timeline question

Once I finished my last test, and got my results, my paperwork was sent to my insurance. Approval took about a week or so and THEN I got the call to schedule. No point in scheduling if insurance said no they said. Not that I was worried, I also had a strong belief my insurance would cover it. I am having a revision so the first surgery was scheduled for maybe 4 weeks (a month) after that. I’m an educator like your husband and also had to consider my schedule. I think once everything is in order it will go quickly for you, especially if the team you are going to has several surgeons to choose from.
