    Knee replacement

Oh my gosh - totally in my prayers! My orthos said both knees need to be replaced and urged me to get bariatric surgery to get my BMI lower (I had already been planning to get surgery)..and I have a long way to go, but hopefully in next year or 2 I will hit the right BMI. When my Dad was alive he did both knees at once. I've considered doing the same but my Dad had a huge tolerance for pain and it was..interesting. I think I'll only do one at a time. What an accomplishment! Lost your weight and now on to one of your key goals! You go, MstressB69!!!

    Atelectasis after surgery?

Atelectasis, or a partial lung collapse is a known complication of general anesthesia. It could happen with ANY surgery and is not specific to bariatric surgery. That's one of the big reasons we have to do that incentive spirometer. Do your incentive spirometer as directed in your post-op instructions. Make sure you're communicating with your doctor with your symptoms.

    Why did you band?

Charles - if you do some browsing on this site, you'll find plenty of people that have had problems with their bands or found out it's not for them. This isn't a band cheerleading site by no means. Go look at the "struggling" lap-band area and read up if you want to see some people that haven't had a smooth ride. I myself had my port flip on me after surgery. I had to have it corrected before I could get a fill. It was an unforseen complication, but something that had to be delt with before I could move on. I've found the GP (general practitioners) really don't know that much about lap band also. Most doctors, that aren't in the bariatric field, aren't educated about the band. They also get paid for prescription medications - so I don't put 100% of my faith in staying on medications all of your life because your doctor says you are responding to them. Why not be healthy enough not to have to take them at all? My OBGYN, two family friends are included in that number. However, since I've gone back to them for checkups (both GP and OBGYN) and having lost 50 pounds since seeing them last - they are happy and are asking me questions about the band.
  6. You will likely need to try several different brands to find one or more that you will like. That's important, as shakes will. Be a part of your life fow awhile. My surgeon advised to only use shakes which have 100% whey isolate Protein, which is considered to be a complete source of protein for bariatric patients. I like GNC products, but there are many others to choose from. I'm certain that other "vets" will chime in with their favorites. Best wishes for a successful journey...

    Do people treat you different?

PAR, that's a very slippery slope you've tried to manage and it is one best left alone. The best way to discuss these things is in one of the support groups where everyone, including the employees, open up about their experiences. They generally tell their beginning weight and what they have lost to date and sometimes show the before and after pictures. This is where you will get the true gist of what is working for whom. Some people have larger amounts of weight to lose and it takes them quite awhile to get to the point that you might not consider them to be overweight. Everyone is different and not all bariatric patients wish to keep working to get thin. Some just want to get enough weight off to help them deal with their medical problems. I'm not that familiar with the band but from what I've read on here, the weight loss is slower than with the other surgeries so you can compare the bands with the VSG or the By-Pass. The surgery is a tool to assist patients with their diets, it's not a miracle cure and it won't work unless you stick to the diet and we all know that not everybody sticks to the diet. So, you can't look at that particular Bariatric Office to see if the surgery is successful. This forum is awesome and you can see by the posts people make, that they are getting out of the surgery exactly what they put into it. Some people have better results than others, it's just one of those things. Another thing, are you having the lap band? If not then you should be directing your questions more towards the people that have the surgery you plan on getting. I had the sleeve on Feb. 10th, I've lost 46 pounds and I feel its the best thing I've ever done for myself. Good luck.

    Can’t make a decision

The one thing that tipped the scale for me and led me to me surgery was the number of people in medical fields that have bariatric surgery.
  10. I take chewable bariatric multi vitamins & liquid B vitamins. I don't feel dizzy at all.
  11. Posted this in what seemed to be the logical place ... and which was the wrong folder. Moving it! Sorry for the blonde move. Hello. I'm Kate and I just got my surgery date last week (July 5). I am a 51 year old mother of five. My son died in 1999. I still have one daughter at home, the other three are married and have their own families -- I have four grandchildren so far. Like probably just about everyone else here, my weight-loss successes — and backslidings — were always less than impressive: I’d lose 50 pounds, gain back 55. Lose 40, gain back 60. Drop 20, find 30. Back and forth, up and down, two steps forward and three steps back. My biggest success was in 1984 when I managed to lose 111 pounds while taking physician prescribed amphetamines. I kept the bulk of it off for almost two solid years after stopping the drugs, but it (of course!) all came back with a little more to spare. Although I wasn't what you'd call "happy" about being overweight, I had finally come to terms with it, and I had learned to live with being fat. I was very active, and other than being an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic, I wasn't experiencing any negative impact from my weight, so it was easy to overlook. My weight generally hovered in the mid-200 range and I was okay with that. Then in late 2009 and early 2010, all hell started breaking loose. First my diabetes medications stopped working -- this happened every couple of years, I'd build up a tolerance or something and I'd have to switch things around -- and my weight suddenly (and without any discernible reason) ballooned to 317 in January of 2010. I began looking into weight loss surgery because I had *never* weighed 300 pounds and I was by God not going to stay there. I was an exercising fool all summer long and I managed to hold my weight between 298 and 317 until mid-September. In mid-September I had an "event" where I blacked out due to extremely high blood sugar and wound up in the ER. My weight at that point was 311. My doctor sent me to an endocrinologist, who promptly switched me to a concentrated insulin (u500). The diabetes is now under control, but as a result of the heavy duty insulin, I am retaining massive amounts of Water and my weight began ballooning. (And I do mean ballooning: less than a month after I started taking the new insulin, I had packed on 36 pounds.) This Fluid is not just in my extremities, it's also collecting around my heart and lungs. The cardiologist says it's a testament to the strength of my heart that I haven't yet had a heart attack. My endocrinologist broached the subject of weight loss surgery with me in October. She told me that if I didn't get off the u500 insulin, my life expectancy could be measured in months rather than the decades I should be contemplating. With my diabetes being as bad as it is, the only way they're going to be able to get me off it quickly and immediately without causing more problems in the process, is thru bariatric surgery. In November she gave me a referral to Premier Bariatrics and in December I began the (seemingly endless) compliance efforts required by the insurance company to consider the surgery. I have been following a very strict diet since January, and yet my weight keeps going up. I haven't been on a scale since March (ours is broken here at home and I've not gone out of my way to get on one elsewhere) but in March I was at 379. I would not be surprised to find I had lost a little, but I would also not be surprised to learn I've gained more too. I'll guess I'm somewhere between 375 and 420. (I'll find out for sure on the 17th when I have my next appointment with the endocrinologist.) In late March, I began a weight-loss blog ( http://www.naebunny.net/fatnomo/ ) and here I am. And, finally, last week, the call I'd been waiting for: the insurance approved of the procedure and I was given the next available surgery date. I go in June 13 to meet with the surgeon again and get my pre-op diet plan, then on June 20 I have a half day of pre-admission testing, and then the surgery itself on July 5. And, that's my how I got from there to here. The next chapter in this story will be how I get rid of the equivalent of two people and get on with the rest of my life!

    Last tango in Fatville

[8/12/10] I realized today as I was getting dressed that I always seem to go the “extra mile” when it comes to my appearance on days I go to the doctor. Today I meet w/my bariatric surgeon & dietician on the path forward. Sept 21 will be here before I know it! But back to appearance – it just dawned on me that I think I go all extra on days I know I’m going to the Fatty Doc, bc I feel like my “cute” will somehow overshadow my “fat” – which is often…or at least SOMEtimes the case in the real world. But at a bariatric Dr.’S office – they rarely see the “cute” – if at all, and mostly only see a person that they are glad had sense enough to do something major, about a major health crisis. *sigh* I’m good at being fat. Have been fat my entire life. And though after all is said & done a year from now, for all intents & purposes – I’ll still be a fat girl…but a lot healthier one (and 75-100 lighter). It didn’t hit me until today that this will most likely be my last “uncomfortable, morbidly obese, disgusted with myself and how big I’ve gotten” summer. This time next year – I won’t be so cramped in the metro seat as I blog by crackberry, ill be walking taller w/a lil more pep in my step, AND I will have ridden the rollercoasters that I haven’t been able to get on for the past 5 yrs – at least a thousand times. While still struggling with some future vanity concerns and how ill feel in my new body – I’m still excited. & optimistic that this was the best decision for ME. I know I’m cute (most of the time)…but for so long the magnitude of my good-lookigness has been overshadowed by my weight. Get. Ready. Here she comes… *doin my Geyonce dance* uh oh uh oh uh oh…

    Endocronologist evaluation?

Endocrinologist usually do blood tests and also check hormones. Sometimes they might test things that the bariatric clinic does not necessarily test...
  16. I met with the surgeon....a little surprised at the amount of appointments/tests we have to get done......but it all makes sense......the appointment went well He says I shouldn't have any problems getting it approved as my BMI is above 40. And I was wondering....... Are there folks who have bariatric surgery as a covered procedure, with a BMI over 40, where the insurance denied the procedure? Many thanks!
  17. Okay, so I tried them for you! The things we do in the name of camaraderie and science. The calcium chews are the caramel Bariatric Fusion, they are pretty good! Better than Viactiv. LOL I could take them daily which is good since I have a giant bag. I also tried the Bariatric Advantage raspberry chew at my nutritionist appointment yesterday and probably like that one even better, it was like a fluffy Starburst. Now I really want to try the Celebrate ones! The Bari-melt vitamin I have is the ADEK one since that's what DS people are supposed to take. I actually liked it and I'm shocked because the chewable B complex I had from a different brand was awful. This one started melting in my mouth as soon as it hit my tongue, it's about the size of a fat nickel, melted really smoothly, tasted nice, and wasn't grainy feeling. It doesn't have anything more than ADEK so I still have to keep taking the B complex, but it'll get me through the first 30 days, then I'll start supplementing according to the Vitalady List that DS veterans use. I'm relieved it wasn't gross!!

    Protein Powder Mix

Really enjoying Big Train and Chike. Both available online and recommended by a bariatric RN.
  19. They say if you don't ask for something then you're not going to get it, so I'm asking for support if anyone is willing to lend it. I could especially use some encouragement from the longer-timers out there. Since I started the bariatric program in May 2014, I have lost 90 pounds. I was sleeved in November 2014 and have lost 71 pounds since surgery. My surgeon's office told me I "was not doing as good" as I could, but that was "OK." (This was probably not the best thing for them to say to me.) I have been in a stall for the last three months. This is mainly because of my actions and allowing other people to negatively affect me. My father-in-law made a pass at me and it triggered me to start binge eating -- even with the sleeve. I have been under an enormous amount of stress. I am grateful that I have now figured out what triggered my downfall and I am getting help from my pre-op psych eval guy to work through unresolved issues, which apparently are still causing me to make the same decisions about food. I look back today and I say 90 pounds is a lot! I can also say that 71 pounds since surgery is a lot. I don't think that's "OK." BUT -- I know I can do better and I know I have lost three months of success because I let someone mess me up. This is my pattern - I allow other people to mess me up. I need your help because I want to keep going. Not only do I want to lose weight for me, but now I am mad and I want to show the people in my life that they can't do this to me! No one is going to take away my success and my joy!!! I want to prove that I am stronger than any of the crap that people throw at me! I need to reclaim my life. Any encouragement you can give me would be a great help!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

    Atlanta sleevers

I’m going through Gwinnett medical center as of now. I signed up for a seminar through Peachtree bariatrics but I got cold feet and never went. A friend of mine recommended Gwinnett medical so I made an appointment. I’m going to see how I feel after the first consultation and then take it from there. How has your experience been with Peachtree?

    1 week post op...feeling great

You're doing so great! It's nice you have your spouse to help you. I talked to the Bariatric Coordinator today at pre-op and she said sugar free gum is ok - Yay! She just said don't go crazy because it can make you salivate and may make you more hungry. It's encouraging you have not had any nausea. Has your family mentioned the tummy noises are loud enough for them to hear? I read that never goes away. Already cutting back on BP meds --- look at you GO! The emotional part if the best to hear and I can understand feeling down. Something has shifted in me in recent months from "no hope" to "I'm going to fight this obesity once and for all!"

    Help for my daughter

I don't know if this. Will be helpful but just might be. Get in touch with your local Children's Hospital. I am sure they have an Adolescent Medicine Department, they may be able to give you referrals to consulers willing to work with young ladies like your daughter. I live in Central Ohio, thought I had lived long enough to know a lot about a lot of things. I just found out recently my nearest Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus has an Adolescent Bariatric Medical department and one of my Bari-pals @ mercmerc who had a VSG at,13 recently had a RnY gastric bypass in her early 20s done there. And her director of Bariatrics was assisted by,my future surgeon Dr Needleman from Ohio State University, was done July 25th and she's doing pretty dog-gone good! So there's some info and I hope you'll be able to do the best for your daughter. PS You are a Wonderful mommy and she's lucky to have YOU!

    Need some help

I am not in Utah, but thought you might like to have an idea of what costs are. I had my surgery at a hospital in Tulsa, OK. What I liked about the way I did my surgery was I did not go through a "bariatric clinic". I knew the surgeon I wanted to use so I went past all the other stuff and went straight to my choice (from what I understand, in the clinic setting you don't get to choose your surgeon). I still had to do all the pre-op appointments but I decided where I wanted to have the surgery. I chose a hospital where my surgeons office is right next door. The hospital has a "global" charge that includes hospital charges, surgeon and anesthesia for the cost of $17,750. I had to pay when I went in for my pre-op admissions. The normal costs of the surgery would be $27,000.

Calories at 8 weeks post op

What Protein shakes have you tried? In those first few weeks I hated Protein Shakes, I could not find any that I liked. I ended up not getting enough protein in and in the long term that is a huge problem. You should get a minimum of 1 gram of protein for every inch you are tall as a minimum. I ended up trying Premier Protein ready made shakes. The chocolate flavor is the best. There are 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and 160 calories. It is an excellent choice for a supplement. You can buy at Sam's or costco. Recently I had surgery on my neck where they went through my throat. It has caused me real issues and basically put me back on soft foods. From what my doctor said, this could go on for months. I went to my Bariatric team for help. They gave me a whole bag of Protein shake samples to try. Syntax nectar - fuzzy naval is excellent, I also loved the Caribbean cooler and vanilla bean torte. They don't have that horrid protein taste. I use Water for the fuzzy navel and milk for the other two. I ended up order a box of each of these flavors in the grab and go packets I purchased these on line via Amazon.. I have been eating a lot of cottage cheese which has great protein, pudding - I eat the real thing not sf, yogurt, cream of wheat, homemade Soups, cooked vegetables cooked very soft, I am struggling with most meats because of the swallow issue right now but most fish will work. I am surprised your doctor has you focus on calories vs. protein. I am able to get between 900 and 1100 calories a day and easily hitting my protein goals. If you cannot get your protein through food, which I still cannot you have to supplement or you will get sick. I wish you the best of luck!
  25. That's a good example of why not to tell...I only told two best friends and one family member, and was supported. I did not want to hear all the "what if"s from others. I did my own research, and it sounds like you did too. As a nurse for over 30 years, I am VERY cautious and researched the medical journals as well as surgeons who do bariatric surgery. My decision to have the sleeve, and which surgeon to use, was based on FACTS, and I also listened to what people said on this forum, some of whom were very biased one way or the other. But I just listened, and then made up my own mind, mostly based on the FACTS that I learned from medical journals and credentials of surgeons. Trust your gut. Don't try to convince or change anyone else's mind or you will become more frustrated. Personally, I would not even discuss the issue with non-supportive persons. Just make up your own mind after you have studied the FACTS, and do what you think is best for YOU. If others approach you with negative comments, just thank them for caring about you, don't prolong the conversation, and proceed on with your plans, what ever they are. We are here to support you, what ever you decide. Keep in touch, read as many posts on this forum and on Obesity Help (where you can find surgeons' credentials), and you will be on the right road!
