Yessss! Now that you mention that I remember her telling me once before..."Well, you're not 600 lbs, you don't need that kind of surgery, do you?" I'm the most overweight person in my entire family. Everyone else is naturally skin and bones. I'm approaching 40, never known what "skinny"/healthy weight feels like and I know that if I don't make an impactful change now, it'll progressively get more difficult to manage as I get older and approach menopause. When I was 28-29, I dropped about 100lbs on my own in about 9mo. by just eating like a person that had Lap-Band. Gained it all back after a pregnancy. Tried the same approach at my current a few years ago and got fatter! I'm like whoa...ok...this is nuts. Tried keto for 2 years, lost 45lb then got stuck. Then boom, my employer changes insurance plans that covers bariatric...things happen for a reason! There's no way I'm turning back now. You said "They have a hard time untethering their view from the individual in front of them who might be fat, but is coping."...that really makes sense. Thanks so much for your help with perspective.

Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery
lizonaplane replied to DareMightyThings's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am still doing the nutrition classes and jumping through insurance hoops (the classes are a joke!). I have cut out diet soda/carbonation, significantly reduced carbs (not keto, just reduced carbs), counting calories (about 1400 a day), increased exercise, cut sweets dramatically, and I'm trying to eat more slowly and not drink 30 minutes after meals. I'm doing well with everything except eating slowly. I have lost 32 lbs in 4 months and I find I'm less hungry and don't crave sweets now that I'm eating fewer carbs and sweets. I used to be addicted to diet soda but I tried one a month ago and it didn't even taste good. Fruit and vegetables were always something I ate plenty of but now they taste even better! I'm eating more protein and I think that helps me stay more full. I figure any weight I lose now is weight I don't have to lose after surgery. And if I get used to living the lifestyle now, it will be much better than throwing "food funerals"! -
Can I have bulletproof coffee
RickM replied to Marissa37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'r welcomed. While the BP coffee, and the keto movement in general may be debatable, the liquid calories are one of the Cardinal no-no's of WLS, (or at least a big red flag,) no matter how healthy and nutritious that liquid may be. Some surgeons are even really down on the protein shakes because of them being liquid calories, though most are accepting of them for their necessity during the immediate to intermediate post op times to ensure adequate protein intake. -
Can I have bulletproof coffee
FluffyChix replied to Marissa37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you morbidly obese? If that sounds like a smart ass question, it is. We are MO. Period. End of story. I can NOT think of ONE scenario where our fat bodies actually NEED an influx of the amount of exogenous dietary fat from relatively nutritionless liquids. We get almost all the fat we need from the fat liberation that is hopefully going on inside our bodies! ALL post surgery patients in the initial weight loss phases are by-proxy on VLCDs (very low calorie diets). Why would you want to sabotage those few calories you CAN have on BS liquids like bulletproof fat laced, fat bomb coffee? And btw? I'm a low carb keto proponent, but I think the latest evolution of fat obsessed ketoneers is totally loony bins crazy! We are not epileptics. And if we're MO, there is no way you need a diet 80-85% fat. I'm not fat phobic. I'm a dietary pragmatist and realist. (BTW, if you are lost in an Antarctica expedition and have 9% body fat, my response to you will be entirely different. Come talk to me then...we will discuss Ericksonn and rabbit starvation.) -

Hunger 3 years post op, Regain
Pearldrop replied to MAAANYC3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are doing the right thing by taking back control. Reread the information and advise you were given at surgery. Check your water intake, are you drinking enough? Be mindful of what you are eating, time, amounts and snacks. Eat tasty salads and soups for your veggies and eat your protein first. youve got this, be kind to yourself. you may also want to check in with a nutritionist, Keto/Atkins ect aren’t always good for everyone -
I had my gastric sleeve done in October ‘16. On the day of my surgery I was 207 lbs and by July ‘17 I was 144. I loved that weight. Initially after surgery I had no hunger. I could barely consume 200 calories a day for the first 4 months. For a long time after that, I struggled to get to 800 calories. My surgeon wanted me to increase my caloric intake bc I wasn’t eating enough. And honestly I really didn’t want to eat solids. Fast forward to Spring ‘18. I was ravenous. Still am. I’m hungry all the time. I’ve had some regain. Currently I’m 160, and I’m 5’1”. Not exactly obese but not as lean as I used to be. Based on my physiological composition 135 is ideal. This took a long time for me to accept as according to the BMI chart for someone my height, my weight should be between 97- 132 lbs. 133 lbs was my goal, but I would be happy to be back at 144lbs. Any advice? What can I do to stop the hunger pangs? I’ve begun keto, but have found the dairy keeps me looking and feeling bloated. Atkins? And can we eat as much as we want until we feel full? Or do we still have to adhere to small servings like during post-op stage 4? Also, I feel so guilty I can now eat a lot more than during my first year post-op, I feel like I don’t have the restriction, and I’m scared to come to terms with this. I definitely don’t serve myself the way I did pre-op, but I’m guessing that’s just bc I’m in fear of gaining more weight. Could I have stretched out my sleeve? Any feedback from this amazing community would be so useful! Thanks everybody :)

2 days post-op and my BP has gone from hypertension stage 2 to normal - is that real?
Pckeys replied to locura79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
this has less to do with weight loss than it does a drop in baseline insulin levels. It happens exactly as you describe when some people start a keto diet too... when you drop high GI carbs, your baseline insulin drops, your kidneys start excreting sodium instead of holding onto it and your blood pressure drops. Since you're not eating anything at the moment, you're in the same early stages of psuedo ketosis If you return to carbs during/after weight loss, your high BP may well return (although weightloss will certainly help), but it is the high fasting insulin - which causes the kidneys to re-uptake sodium - which will contribute to hypertension. If you're on BP meds, you'll want to watch this over then ext 2 months.. many of us get off the meds within the first month of so. -
Need breakfast ideas - what are you eating for bf?
DebbyC64 replied to indacrucible's topic in Food and Nutrition
Jimmy Dean turkey crumbles are good in eggs. It gives you much needed protein. I also made Keto quiche. It has no shell, just eggs, spinach, mushrooms, onion, turkey crumbles and cheese. One slice makes an all inclusive breakfast.💪🏼 -
Confusion About Requirements (Denmark)
BoredFatGirl replied to BoredFatGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was like pulling teeth to get my OB/GYN to prescribe me Metformin, as she said it wasn't meant for use outside of fertility and because of my weight, she couldn't give me the treatment. However, I found a ton of medical studies, kept pestering her, and she ended up caving. She gave me a 3 month supply of Metformin (which runs out next month, so we will have to discuss getting more soon.. Hopefully it won't be so hard for me this time). I assume the Metformin is the reason for such rapid weight loss (besides going on a mostly-keto diet since starting it). However, not too much else has changed -- I haven't even had a period in over 130+ days at this point. Thank you for the recommendations!! I was dancing for 30 mins a day to get my exercise in, but that has stopped since I came back from the states. I need to get back on it. It was a lot of fun and definitely got me to work up a sweat. -
What's your eating like?.. I'm 13.5 weeks post op and stalled 3 weeks ago as well. I hate the friggan scales tbh. I eat a mostly keto diet and I'm only a few kgs from goal weight although I never had one before I think Ill make one up lol Increase your fat intake and really look at what carbs your eating they can make a huge difference. You want to tap into your fat stores and use that as an energy source and not inflate your insulin. Walk and weights u don't need to any full on bloody cardio as u will stress your body and make cortisol. Christ honestly who knows I feel like I'm a bloody expert and still I'm stuck as well lol

YES! I am not even a huge ice cream fan but my husband is and before my RNY, we had been doing a keto WOL for 15 months so I looked up a few recipes for easy keto ice cream and EVEN using real whipping cream, what I made for him had less carbs, LESS FAT and less calories even then the 'retail' items being billed as 'low carb' or lower carb. I just get blown away trying to figure out where the BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP did all the 'bad numbers' i'm seeing on the nutrition labels of these products come from????

I was banded in 2016 at that time I was about 220 pds and started having issues even with air all let out in 12/2018. Insurance had approved to remove band however I did want to wait and make sure that’s what I wanted. Over this past summer is when I decided to have my band removed and switched to the sleeve. My doctor wrote a letter of necessity to my insurance and it was approved. My lowest with band was 165 and at my surgery date on 12/31/2019 I was 183. I’m currently diabetic but off meds as instructed by my doctor. I’ve heard sometimes the surgery doesn’t work for everybody. . I also love wine but I do plan on doing everything by the book and cutting most of the carbs out. I had tried Keto but I think I gained weight instead of losing and I also ended up with my cholesterol a little high. Hope you find something that works for you.

Am I a 'recovered' morbidly obese person?

You do know this is exactly the Keto eating plan. High fat, moderate protein, low carb. The REAL fats help curb hunger and your body has found the right formula if those for you! -
Has anyone kept their surgery a secret?
jesseycakes replied to J Johnston's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My kids and my husband and one friend know. My son told his fiancee. That's it. Too many judgmental people in my life. Everyone has been trying to talk me into doing keto, not knowing I've done the surgery. It bothers me that people are trying to push me into it. Plus I'm so emotional post op. I've lost nearly 30 lbs in a month and a half and I feel like them pushing me means I haven't lost fast enough for them. So if I tell them I've had the surgery what will they think? That I can't do anything right? No thank you. I'll keep it to myself. Sent from my LGL59BL using BariatricPal mobile app -

Medications with weight gain side effect
FluffyChix replied to tnks2hp's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok, so here's the deal. Most meds will not "make you magically gain" if you don't actually put the extra calories in your body that are gonna drive weight gain. I say this cuz I know first hand. One of the worst drugs ever for weight gain cuz it def drives up cortisol and insulin is prednisone and even worse, IV prednisone! I was on IV prednisone for 3 months and during that time, actually LOST weight--about 60lbs. BUT, I was doing IF plus caloric restriction. And because I cut out high glycemic carbs and only focused on good lean protein, leafy greens, and low glycemic veg with a tiny bit of healthy fats, I was not hungry at all. I went into ketosis and that helped curb the hunger effects from the prednisone. I am also on Femara (a cancer drug that shuts down hormones and makes you hungry and increases insulin). I gained a crap ton of weight on this drug when I gave up and was eating my crappy diet. But in the last 18 months that I'm back on low carb/modified keto and eating a calorie controlled diet and doing IF -- I've lost 135lbs. So it is possible. My weight loss is slow. Only about 70lbs give or take since surgery in February. But I'm about 2lbs from first goal of 150 right now. It can be done!!!! Hang in there. Take your meds, feel better, move more, go low carb!!!! Eat those leafy veggies and lean protein and a bit of healthy fats!!! Drink lots of water!!!! You got this! -

I wanted WINGS!!!!! Is like we are alcoholics....and there alcohol EVERYWHERE and we can't drink it. The smells are amazing when we can't eat anymore of it. Honestly, we are addicted to carbs, candy sweets...and now we made a decision COLD TURKEY to not eat it again. I will never judge anyone with addictions again. It takes a great deal of strong will to stop eating the things we loved. Then again, our stomach is so small that we couldn't eat more then 2 oz at the time.lol....I am 3 weeks post surgery. I miss the wings..but I am going to try the Keto diet...all the bread free wings I can fit in three oz belly!! -
How many carbs are you eating per day?
ParaGirl replied to kentx05's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have been doing low carb since Jan. 2. I am definitely in ketosis because I have the awful keto-breath going on. I do not count carbs, however, my daily menu consists of this most of the time... Breakfast is either 2 eggs and bacon with cheese. or an Atkins shake. coffee with heavy cream I am a USPS mail carrier, so I am pretty busy throughout the day, but I usually have an Atkins bar and then a pack of peanuts for lunch. Peanuts are 3 net carbs. Today, instead of this, I had the peanuts early, then a Hardees low carb burger for lunch. It was spectacular dinner is almost always a salad...big salad with lettuce, cheese, bacon, and whatever else I may add - ham, eggs, etc. I know I dont get a lot of carbs, but I am losing pretty well at this point. -
I purchased the Tespo 5 weeks pre surgery and started using the energy and women’s multi-vitamin. My husband is not sleeved, and he he loves his men’s daily ad the energy. Total output is about 1 oz and the flavors are not bad. He mixes it with his Keto drink and can’t even tell it’s in there.

KETO? After surgery
Healthy_life2 replied to njcardi97's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All diet plans and surgeries fail if you eat over your weight loss/maintaining calories/macros. Sorry you are feeling anxious. Your surgery is going to be a great tool to help keep you on track. This will be different than other diet attempts. We are adults. Learn your bariatric basics. Find a long-term sustainable plan that works for you. Call it what you want, we are all on a diet. (Dietitians plan, vegan, keto, intermittent fasting, low carb paleo…. the list goes on) If you choose keto, don’t eat over your calories/macros. If you choose your medical professionals plan, Dont eat over your calories and macros. -
The primary question here is,,,why? What do you hope to accomplish with it? If keto is something that you are already doing and like, and makes sense for you to keep doing it for the foreseeable future, then yes, you can do keto after surgery and it will work as well as anything. If you are hoping to adopt it because of a belief that it will improve your WLS performance, then forget it. Summerset, above, has the right idea that the WLS by itself is plenty strong enough on its own. Looking back 20-30 years, patients were often told to just "eat like you always did, just less..." and it worked! For a while. Of course, eating like what got them fat in the first place didn't prevent them from gaining weight again in the longer term. But this does illustrate one of the big powers of your WLS - that it is relatively insensitive to what style of diet is used that first six months to a year when we are losing rapidly. Low carb diets that are popular today work just as well as yesterday's low fat diets. This means that we can concentrate on learning how to eat for long term health and weight control rather than promised quickie weight loss followed by inevitable regain that we get from the various fad diets. In the non-WLS world, diets fail 95+ percent of the time when you look out beyond a year, as people either hit diet fatigue and fall back on old habits, or they may actually get down to a normalish weight, and then regain as they fall back into old habits. The same thing happens with WLS, only it usually takes longer given the lingering restriction that we have - but the weight can come back over time if we don't learn how to keep it off, and most diets don't teach that.

Feeling very defeated...not sure it was worth it now...
SleeveToBypass2023 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so frustrated. I lost 30 pounds the first 2 weeks after surgery. Then I hit a stall for 2 weeks. Lost 5 pounds when the stall broke, and then literally lost nothing else. Stayed at that weight for a week, and now I'm gaining weight!!!!! I don't understand it. I bought a food scale and I weigh everything. I check the labels on everything to make sure protein is high and carbs and fats are low. I work out once, sometimes twice, a day. I never have restriction, so I make sure to set alarms for when I can eat so I don't graze or eat too much (I eat 3 meals and 1 snack per day). I'm always hungry, but I do my best to ignore it and stick to the diet and eating schedule. I did a journal of what I eat and I sent it to my dietician and she said "it looks good, you're doing what you're supposed to. It might be that you have PCOS and it's holding on to your weight and even putting some back on. We see this a lot in PCOS patients." Wait....what??? I lost 100 pounds in 8 months on keto, but I can't lose more than 30 with WLS??? And it took 2 months before the weight came back with keto, but I can't even make it to 6 weeks post op before the weight starts coming back with WLS??? I went down from a size 30 in clothing to a size 22 before the weight came back with keto. I haven't gone down any clothing sizes with WLS and my clothes are still fitting pretty much the same (I've gained 6 pounds back from the 30 I lost). I can drink as much as I want, eat anything I want, don't have to eat slow because there's no restriction and nothing to make me slow down, I could only eat 1/3 of a burger a week or so ago, now I can eat a whole one with no issues and not quite feel comfortable yet (I still stop, even though I'm still hungry). I know everyone says my stomach is still healing, but I never lost my hunger hormone, I never had food aversion, I never really had any restriction. After the first 2 weeks (my stomach was still very sensitive and I had to crush pills and be careful what I ate because PAIN), I never had any other ANYTHING that would even indicate I had surgery. Literally nothing has changed. So I follow the diet, weigh my food, eat only at my designated times, work out, journal what I eat, stay hungry, gain weight back, and basically just live miserably every day. -
Ok....everytime I try to lose weight, I become addicted to the scale. I hop on at least 3 times a day to see where I am....even though I KNOW it hasn't moved. LOL When I did Atkins, I used the keto-sticks every time I pee'd to make sure they still turned pink. Does anyone else get like this? I am getting next week, and don't want the scale to run my life. I might just have to throw it away and drive somewhere to weigh myself.
