Sleevers over 300lbs?
OutsideMatchInside replied to dstined4gr8tnes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How much you lose after 6 months is basically entirely on the types of food you are eating. The first 6 month it is easy to lose because you are healing still and are at max restriction. If I ate the way that most sleevers and most of the people that post on the forums eat, I am pretty sure I would have never weighed less than 250. The only reason I have been steadily losing for the past 1.5 years is because I eat Keto. I eat DENSE Protein, and it basically leaves no room for anything else and I am satisfied. I have fats in my coffee, and how I prepare my food, and that is about it. No carbs, I am under 20 carbs a day most days unless I have a Protein Bar or something. I have been to the gym maybe 3 times since surgery, Well maybe 10. I walk my dog every day, and I randomly do yoga, and that is it. It is a lot easier to control what you eat than workout, and exercise isn't necessary to lose weight, proper nutrition is. I eat 1300-1500 calories, once a week I eat about 1800-1900 and I am still losing. Low calories for a long period of time destroys your metabolism and holds you back from losing. I got to 1000 calories as fast and possible, and lost most of my weight eating in the 1200 calorie range. I eat more calories now, because of some lifestyle changes. I would just suggest anyone eat under 1100 calories for any length of time. You will end up stuck on low calories for the rest of your life. If you are unsure about how many calories you should be eating. Have your resting metabolic rate tested so you know where your metabolism is, instead of guessing. Also how may carbs do you consider low carb? -
Not new to low carbs & so I am familiar with some side effects
BgR72 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have done the atkins diet. I have done the fasting programs. Warrior program. Went 25 hours without food & then eat one time & fast again. So I have some understanding of low carbs or no carbs. I used the keto strips to see if I got into the fat burning process. So I did different programs. Ultimately, I didnt get a consistent weight loss from these programs. Maybe 18 lbs then couldnt sustain the weight loss and or lose any more. I noticed that while on a low carb program or no carb that I kept a dry mouth. Also with the dry mouth was the bad breath because of the dry mouth. It was unpleasant. So, I started to chew gum more change mouthwash to non alcohol. It helped somewhat but more or so to cover up the dry mouth & bad breath. Basically, I found out that dry mouth and bad breath may be what some may deal with when carbs are low. So with the pre & post op program this may become an issue for some. I heard that we cant chew gum. I think that's what I read. I will confirm with the nutritionist. If so, I got to find a replacement because I know this will be a problem for me. Maybe sugarfree mints? IDK. Still wont be the same like chewing in gum. I wonder is this just for 6 months post surgery not to chew gum ? Got to ask my doctor to make sure. If someone knows Im sure I will read it. But will ultimately confirm yes or no when I see my doctor this week. Anyone dealing with dry mouth and or bad breath while on pre or post op program. -
Anybody on Atkins?
BigUtahMan replied to hermione53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The Atkins diet is now usually referred to as the Keto diet or Ketogenic diet, which I also follow and enjoy. The premise is using your fat as primary source of energy rather than carbs. I think you should absolutely do it and see how your body adapts. As for me, I have lost all hunger pains and do not crave sugar or carbs like I use to even post opp eating my meal plan. I have lost about 10 pounds this month so far, (first 20 days) so I like that as well. The best thing about this diet, is I do believe it can be sustained as a sleever, as you are already 80% there as others have commented. My macros I try and hit are 30 grams net carbs, 75-100 grams Protein, and 100 + grams fat. (I try and stay between 1200-1500 calories per day.) -

I had the same green light from my Doctor, and it worked out very well for me. I had to travel for a week and was very intimidated to attempt to have a liquid diet on the road with a busy schedule. Not that it is impossible, but taking clients out to dinner etc, wasn't practical either. I did make good food choices with lot's of Soups, protein bars, scrambled eggs, etc... I have not had much restriction from day one, so it is relatively easy for me to have normal foods. More important for me than what I CAN eat, is knowing and choosing the foods I should eat. That is where the battle is won and lost long term. Post op we are all excited to lose the weight and experience our new body. But if you fast forward 6 months, what changes? Fast forward again 2, 5, 10 years, what changes? I am still a food addict no matter how in the future I go, so I need to make good food choices right now and work with my surgery to re-learn how to eat appropriately. As far as a NUT, I think many are great, but I was not impressed with the one at my DR office. Any NUT who tells me to fill up on fake sugars and Jello, I think is off base. I personally don't believe overloading your system on fake sugars is wise, as it is usually just a matter of time before they go back to the real sugars, not to mention the toxins most of them cause in your body. (I do use stevia and Xylitol) Being a sugar addict, I know it works to lose weight in the short term, but likely not ideal to contribute to long-term success.) Currently, I am doing a keto diet which I like for a lot of reasons. My only advise is to keep up the great work in searching for answers, and continue to do more soul searching with your diet choices, as you get help from others including NUTs. Hope this helps. -
Any sleevers doing a ketogenic diet?
BigUtahMan posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been in Ketosis for several weeks by keeping my net carbs under 30 grams a day. Seems to work well by eliminating hunger from my day to day life. Just curious how many others are doing Keto as well? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
What are you eating for a low carb breakfast?
TheRevisionedVagabond posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Trying to map out my meal plan & I'm so used to overnight oats, that it's hard to think I won't be doing that if I want to accelerate my weight loss. Every low Carb Breakfast I google, it's all Keto. My NUT wants me on low carb, low fat, high Protein & I'm sick of doing scrambled eggs every morning. What are you eating for a low carb breakfast?! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Anybody on Atkins?
Sugarnspice replied to hermione53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Atkins is very similar To keto my surgeon says it's ok to follow because really this is how you're supposed to live post op extremely low carb & high protein -
I'm 7 weeks post op and had a urine test yesterday actually. I had bilirubin in mine as well, ketones, but no protein. My doctor said that it wasn't wildly high so he thinks it will be fine the next time. Ketones for keto diet is normal as well. He said the liver (I had a fatty liver) could be healing and the numbers may fluctuate in my urine for awhile. In my blood work my AST and ALT which have been high (also related to my fatty liver) have lowered!! Yay! Still high, but improving. He thinks by 6 months out my liver may have completely healed itself. That's exciting! I hope for you it's the same and nothing serious, good luck!!

Post Op Liquid diet hard?
scochrane86 replied to scochrane86's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am waiting to get my surgery date (appointment with surgeon is next month) so I haven't started any pre op prep. I am on a strict keto diet right now (was able to loose my 10% pretty quick) and have become fat adapted, so I do not feel hungry often, but I am worried about switching to all liquids. Its the "dumping" effect that scares me, I don't want to chance eating too much but don't want to feel hungry either. -
YES! Keto was wonderful for me. I lost 40lbs in the first 2 months and then stalled for a year and a half no matter what I did (at which point I learned I was broken). But I loved it anyway. I slept better, felt more energetic, never had low blood sugar/hangry emotions and almost never was hungry. Here are some fantastic resources: The big one: www.reddit.com/r/keto - Seriously, everything you could want is there. They're amazing and it is an active community full of people who get the science side and the flavor side. Recipes: Two huge sites I would always visit: http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/ and http://cavemanketo.com/ Macro calculator for if you hit a stall: https://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ I don't want to overwhelm you with links and info. If you're ever looking for a good bread substitute or something for a sweet tooth/salt craving, I probably found something to fit the bill.

Also, a huge shoutout to keto! I did it for a year and a half. It wasn't successful for me since my body is broken (thus the need for surgery), but it was such a wonderful diet. Let me know if you ever want some recipe ideas or need help with that stuff.

I Pinterest a lot and found these noodles from a keto recipe. Not sure how they taste seeing that I'm only 2 weeks post op but they're good reviews. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Three days post-surgery, the journey so far
vsg_dan replied to Tufflaw's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So I've been following this thread for weeks now. It's the best. My surgery is on 2/14 and reading your experience and tips has definitely helped. Once the surgery is way down your rear view are you considering keeping a low carb/keto diet? This is my intention so all of your food suggestions are hitting the spot. -
I developed an acne looking rash on my cheeks about 2 months ago. Before I ever started the pre op diet. (Surgery date was 1/4/17). But about 5 days ago my cheeks got even more flushed and red and now I have a splotchy, itchy rash where my neck and chest come together. I haven't started any new soaps, creams, or medicines other than supplements. I have an apt for the doc on 2/17. Does any one else have this issue or know what may be causing it? I read about something called "keto rash" but I'm not too sure if this is even a real thing. Sent from my SGH-M919N using the BariatricPal App

How Dod Your Marriage Improve?
bitingcat replied to clevergirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My husband is also heavy - though not as much as me. He had been doing really well biking after knee surgery a couple years back - lost a lot of weight, getting fit - before getting totally derailed with a badly broken arm. My surgery finally pushed him into trying keto and he's been losing weight almost as fast as I have. He's also been cooking more - mostly meat and veg - and even our teenagers can't stand against a united parental front of "no junk!" We also have one of these, which is great when one person is more fit/just a stronger cyclist (we lucked out and found one on Craigslist). I'm really looking forward to using this for longer rides once my health improves! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
For most people 1000-1200 should do it. I wouldn't go below 1000. Either follow a Keto plan or a macro plan. Macro is 35% carb (complex carbs only) 25% fat and 40% Protein. I started with keto and switched to macro. my rate of loss actually sped up when i switched to the macro plan.

Nausea after 2 years... (specifically diary/drink related)
heynowkc posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
So I'm 2 years out from gastric sleeve surgery. Last year I started eating carbs again and got way off track. I posted about this back at the end of December and I'm still trying to work the kinks out, since I have been on-and-off doing well with getting back into the healthy lifestyle that I LIVED BY before reintroducing carbs. I know that I can do it I've just been having trouble keeping myself from falling back into old habits. I've recently noticed that I almost always get sick when I drink/eat anything dairy-based AND sweetened. Whether the sweetener is artificial (no sugar added hot chocolate or protein shakes) or real (like one serving of ice cream on a cheat day). I get the sweats, that feeling of shakiness or general unease, and finally unignorable nausea until I just have to just run to the bathroom and give up. This is not something I've ALWAYS suffered from. Especially with the protein shakes since I drank them regularly for at least the first six moths or so. I think this happens more often with powdered protein mixes than it does with the pre-made premier protein shakes though, for whatever that's worth. I keep telling myself it may because I just drink it too fast, but I am not so sure anymore. I have almost a full case of premiere protein (which I think I'll TRY keep and just drink verrrry slowly) and a brand new container of EAS Lean 15 protein powder. Not sure I'll ever be able to finish that if every time I make a shake I get sick. At this point, I'm just ready to give up on protein supplements period. I am trying to maintain a high fat/protein and low carb diet (basically keto, but modified for WLS and my protein requirements) so I definitely feel like I get enough protein anyway without the supplements. I don't know. I'm really just writing this because I'm curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing. -
Does appetite come back?
Mandybb replied to Didjit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 5 weeks out and I get hungry. Not to the point I'm dying or anything but if I go too long between Protein shakes I get dizzy and tired. I have carb cravings still now that I'm eating real food even though I'm eating less than 15 grams a day. I try to stay in keto but I've been ready for food since week 2 of surgery. I'm losing weight, so that's the important thing. I get really hungry when working out or walking long distances. Every one is different but this is my experience. I like xylitol in my black tea - just a little sweet and it doesn't make me crave sweets all day. My husband went hardcore keto when I had surgery and giving up his honey was tough - he used my xylitol for a week or two and then discovered pastured cream. He tried new (stronger) teas until he found a combo he likes and doesn't use any sweetener at all any more. The fat seems to help him with carb cravings, too. He's lost about as much weight as I have, btw. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Can I add sugar to my hot tea when I'm on clear liquids?
bitingcat replied to serenityjames81's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I like xylitol in my hot black tea - just enough for a little sweet. Not as no-carb as erythritol, but I prefer the flavor. Herb or iced, I'll usually just used stevia. My husband went keto recently for both himself and to support me as a new post-op. He used xylitol for a few weeks to help wean him off honey and recently has switched to stronger teas, unsweetened but with pastured heavy cream. As an aside, he's lost about as much weight as I have in the last 4 months. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
EXCITED! untill I watch my 600 lb life
Sullie06 replied to chynadoll619's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was concerned about Dougs wife as well. In the beginning I wasn't concerned because she was 3 months out of having twins. I have a friend who is 3 years post VSG and was up 50 pounds after her baby but she did Keto and got the weight back off. It seemed like his wife was getting larger. Also how she was eating wasn't helping. I actually enjoy the show, I'm no where near 600-700 pounds but I love when they are successful. It gives me hope that if they can be, so can I. -
Can I add sugar to my hot tea when I'm on clear liquids?
Berry78 replied to serenityjames81's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A keto diet means it is ketogenic, basically very very low carb, high Protein and fat. Being a few years out, you are now in the maintenance phase. Think of yourself the same as you were before the surgery, or same as "regular folk". The weight loss strategies the rest of the world uses are going to apply to you. Take a little time to decide which train to jump on. Go to your local library and/or bookstore, go to the diet/nutrition section, and behold! Everything from South Beach Diet to Mediterranean to Atkins, etc. Keto will be there. Read through the various concepts, and see if any of them sound like something that will work for you. If they promise weight loss without exercise, ignore that part. You must exercise! Good luck! Sent from my SM-N920R4 using the BariatricPal App -

Can I add sugar to my hot tea when I'm on clear liquids?
ddkVSG replied to serenityjames81's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would not add sugar. It can stimulate cravings for carbs. Have you thought about following a strict keto diet to get the remaining pounds off? I did keto pre op and now post op. Once you are off carbs, the weight melts away and you won't have cravings for sugar. My husband has lost 40 pounds since I started my pre op diet. -

hi @JamieLogical.. id have to say in about May of 2016. i've gained abt 3-5lbs (although i seldom weigh myself anymore) i do NOT get the Water intake that i should per day, & have only recently returned to the gym .. i strive to eat very clean, keto almost.. don't crave sweets or starches, so that's good. i MAY not be eating enough throughout the day, but i STILL SAY that i am able to eat too much @ once!! i eat lean Protein, chicken, fish, ground turkey & veggies and/or salad..
