Tracking what you eat is the best starting place. You need to focus. Try not to graze all day if you are because you will eat straight around your sleeve. Set yourself up for three meals a day and supplement with a Protein shake if you're starving at some point in between. I think a lot of people get their lunches and stuff down by eating it over the course of several hours. If you're done eating, be done. Keto will focus you. I also agree you should begin exercising if you have not. Weights, cardio. I do an hour of cardio 6 to 7 days per week. I work with a trainer for four.

Almost 2 years out, Wake-up call and back on track!
heynowkc replied to heynowkc's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@sbg224 I am just now seeing your post. How are you doing? I find following the HFLC (high fat low carb, or keto) diet is helpful. It helps with the hunger and it helps with staying away from the carbs. The thing is that I babysit part time (I have a full time job, but do this one the side.) and being with kids several evenings a week is so hard! Kids mean lots of snack food means lots of carbs and junk food! So hard to say no but I've been managing! I have been steadily losing but it has been slow going the busier I get. The busier I get, the less time I can focus on exercise and eating right. But I've still been losing and not gaining so that is a plus! Hope your journey is finding it's way back on track! -
3months out, suddenly zero hunger
gigiinDC replied to gigiinDC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone. I'm just amazed cause I had a huge appetite up until this week. Now nothing. I also don't have a typical menu but I definitely stay under 50g carbs, usually under 25, and 60-85 g Protein . On Keto I end up eating a lot of bacon, eggs, meatballs , cottage cheese, organic turkey deli meat and low lactose cheeses, salmon and broccoli or string Beans. I added sauerkraut and bone broth for GAPS. I get almost no grains and zero fruit. Amazingly I stopped craving carbs almost immediately after starting Keto... that was the first craving to go away. Now I really don't crave anything so I'm forcing myself to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Getting Discouraged
gigiinDC replied to southernmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only down 43lbs too and I was sleeved a week before you (10/27). I haven't really exercised thought yet. I've had a lot of long stalls so I started he Keto diet (super low carb , moderate Protein , high fat), and the lbs are melting away. It's tough at first and you have to talk to your doc if you have gallbladder issues but it helped me get over stalls. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Crying on the bathroom floor
gigiinDC replied to White Sale's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@whitesale Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Im going on three months post op and have had no less than 4/FOUR crazy long stalls. That's crazy, right! It happens. Trust me it will get better. I did the Keto diet starting at about a month ago to jumpstart weight loss again after an almost three week stall. It's not for everyone but it works for me. I was hungry as hell everyday until last week now I've suddenly lost all hunger. The one thing I've learned is that your body will react to this sleeve differently from week to week. If you stay on your plan you will progress eventually! I promise. I'm going to start working out on Tuesday and can't wait!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Vets, please help. I'll be three months out on Friday. I had never really lost my hunger and was completely ravenous from weeks 2-11. Suddenly I have zero hunger whatsoever. I only eat because I know I have to and when out to dinner with my boyfriend. I'm on the Keto and modified Gaps diets (gaps because my son who has sensory issues is now on gaps and I'm trying this gross bone broth and sauerkraut mess, and Keto because it kicks me out of stalls and I don't crave carbs one bit on it). Is it the Keto that is suddenly suppressing my hunger or is it the sleeve suddenly starting to suppress my hunger like others have had all along? Like I said I was starving every single day since starting purée stage! Is it normal to suddenly lose appetite around this time? Will it come back again? Not that I necessarily want it back.. I just think this is odd. I'm not feeling full, but just not hungry at all. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I feel like I'm cheating
Travelher replied to Victoria Bontempi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was doing keto(high fat, high protein, low carb) until my dietician said it was too low carb...now I do 30-35% complex carb, 25-30% fat and 40% protein. Rate of loss did not change. -
This is terrible advice. Look, something isn't working obviously. What do you do when something isn't working? You figure out why, and change it. Start tracking and measuring. You can't measure where you need to be if you have no idea where you're at. What are your calories/protein/carbs per day? Do you know where they need to be in order for you to start losing again? Of not, experiment a little and find out. Tweak some stuff. I think going Keto is a very good start. I also think you should shock your body a bit and start moving more. If you're not doing anything currently, start. Even if it's walking. If you're already walking, walk more. If you're already exercising, start a different routine. HIIT training and weights is an amazing way to burn fat. Your body needs a jump start to get things moving again, and exercise usually is just the ticket. If you really want things to change, you'll find the change needed to make it happen. Good luck!!

UUGGHHH, feeling so disgusted,. not looking for a pity party, just venting.. its been over a yr. since my surgery, and I'm STUCK @ abt a 50lb loss. I just reactivated this acct and see that I am up abt 5lbs since I joined in March,. I've unfollowed people/groups on IG & FB, not that I'm a "hater", (I salute & congratulate everyone)...I just don't see anything in common w them anymore.. (also my nutritionist recommended it to focus on me) my diet is usually: eggs & sausage, avocado for bkfst, lots of protein (mainly chicken) in salads or w sautéed veggies, etc. (have just started the "keto" diet) don't like carbs believe it or not, not that I haven't "cheated" & had sweets here or there, but I'm not a bread/pasta/pastry person (thank God for @ least that I guess) don't wanna go see my Dr anymore, I feel he's not helpful @ all, just recommending a book to follow. #wtf.. and the nutritionist was so/so.. have only met w her once. my low points are not drinking enough water & I'm CONVINCED I can eat too much @ one sitting. I even got a kitchen scale, haven't used it yet though. don't expect what I haven't put in, BUT I don't get why I've stalled so bad if I'm eating pretty well balanced & "clean".. what's the point of the surgery if we still have to follow a "diet" (and by that I do NOT mean I expect to still eat any & every thing that got me fat to begin with bc I don't) thx for listening....

I wanna know about carbs... Seriously!
Guest replied to KindaFamiliar's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
It's unbelievable how carbs kick you out of keto so quickly. I was testing on ketostix completely no color, I was on neutral---so proud of myself. Yesterday I ate an Oikos Triple Zero yogurt for dinner, and this morning my ketostix was moderate which after weeks of neutral shocked the heck out of me....the color on my stick looked so dark. I assume that is why so many people slow down on weight loss numbers on week 3 after surgery. As soon as they start eating it affects the body. I am not in a hurry or worried, 8 days after VSG today. -
Calories and carbs? Need input!
genn replied to genn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have to work up to that rate. I'm 3.5 months and now able to do between 800 and 950, doesn't happen overnight. I tried to up my goal in my fitnesspal by 50 calories a week. I was at 650-750 for the longest time. I follow a macro plan which I set up in myfitnesspal. I aim for 35%carb 25% fat and 40% Protein. if I"m 30-30-40 that's fine too. been working well for me. Lots of people are put on Keto plans (high protein high fat low carb. i was doing that until my dietician told me my carbs were too low. so I adjusted...still losing. I'm doing 900-950 pretty consistently this week and happy with that. my goal was to get over 900 to avoid "starvation mode". awesome okay good I guess I'm just afraid of over eating. Even tho I know my calories before starting this journey was probly more 3000 range I just don't wanna fail at this and wanna know that eating 1000 calories will still allow me too loose. I'm a little over 2 months post op and someone noticed yesterday and said something. I was asked how and said I was doing the keto diet (which I am...kinda). I don't eat carbs and the carbs I do get are from healthier foods. That satisfied their curiosity.

Awful Taste in Mouth/Bad Breath

It's not really a thing to "stretch" your sleeve. You should not be worried about that. People do experience some "relaxation" in their sleeves around the 9-12 month mark. That's why the first 9-12 months are often called the "honeymoon" period, where you have the most restriction. Weight watchers doesn't really seem compatible with a WLS diet. You should be having a LOT of protein and very few crabs. As far as I know, Weight Watchers allows for a fair number of carbs. If you feel like you need to be on some kind of structured diet, I would recommend Atkins or Keto.

Considering Gastric Sleeve
bitingcat replied to Walter.Sobchak's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm only 3 1/2 months out, so my experience with sleeve is limited. My experience with dieting is not. I started young and was *never* able to lose more than a few pounds. The weight always came back and usually brought friends. The deck was kind of stacked against me - as it is for many. Severe food allergies (almost all veggies and some fruits) meant I was chronically malnourished. Severe hay fever limited those easy outdoor walks and bike rides. Skin allergies, eczema, and asthma meant even indoor exercise was challenging. As an adult I sought medical help, traditional and alternative, but I was already broken - overweight and clinically depressed with a trashed metabolism and busted joints. And my weight kept going up. Fortunately about 20 years ago (after wrecking my personal life, too) I ended up marrying one of my best friends. School, work, and two very difficult kids on the autism spectrum later, we've both put on far too much weight. Ten years of high stress and no sleep tend to do that even without help. I'd though about the band for years, but just didn't like the complications and my hands were full with therapy and homeschool. We tried to eat clean and healthy and be active, but at best we maintained. Two years ago my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and it was officially too much. My kind-of-stable weight starting climbing; my blood pressure shot up; my blood sugar spiked; and my hormones went bonkers. I was 43 and my body had had all it could take. I had researched gastric sleeve off and on, but after spending time caring for him in the hospital and a year of watching him balk at all the doctors orders, I felt like Chrmow - why can't he just follow directions to care for himself? Followed by the awareness that I was doing the very same thing. I researched, prayed, and researched some more. My husband and I were both scared of complications, but math says the odds are no worse than a lot of other surgeries. And I had control over my own choices post-surgery and knew I could be compliant and follow directions, which can minimize post-op complications. Surgery is scary and I've had plenty of minor non-surgical complications, but have healed really well. And the amazing thing is, for the first time in my life, I longer feel like I'm starving to death. I still have to make good food choices and I still have a long way to go, but I've lost 40 lbs since surgery and that really does help everything. The reduced weight on my joints means I'm able to do more physical therapy for my bad ankle and hip, for instance. The reduced stomach means I'm able to eat Protein and largely be done instead of looking for filler. The therapist sounds like a great plan, for both evaluating "food addiction" and for monitoring/getting a handle on depression. I seem to be one of the few people who hadn't had "buyer's remorse" after surgery, but a) I did intense research into all aspects of the surgery; I had already dealt with a lot of food-as-comfort issues; and c) I'm 45 and was ready to really change. I've eaten enough pizza, cake, and Cookies for a lifetime and am largely fine with never being able to eat those things again. I've seen people on forums who freak out when they realize they'll never being able to eat a whole pizza again for comfort. I've seen the people who "can't" do liquid post op diet and try to eat steak a week after surgery. And I've seen people who realize they can still eat a box of crackers, do so, and can't seem to stop. Don't worry about the actual surgery itself -- worry about whether or not you're truly willing to change your life. Because the last few months have been life changing for me, but even at this point, it's a lot of work. Having said that, my husband started doing Keto concurrent with my surgery, partially to support me and partially as his last ditch effort to not have to. He's lost as much weight as I have eating eggs, cheese, and grass fed meat - which was basically my pre-op liver shrink diet. Assuming you're medically capable, you can always try that first. The first week trying to get off sugar and carbs is really hard, but improves a lot after that. If you can handle that, it might help on its own. Or it might end up preparing you for surgical pre and post op diets. I know - really mouthy for a total noob . But my big regret is not finding a way to do this ten years ago, when my kids were still little. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
I have done it, and it does work pretty good. I am almost 3 years post sleeve too. HOWEVER... The amount of food that I'm used to eating NOW, versus the amount that you're allowed in the reset, is staggeringly different. I don't eat HUGE amounts of food, but a reset is essentially taking you back to immediately post op when you had a huge amount of inflammation that caused the best restriction! Back then i was eating 1/4 cup at a time and it took 3-4 hours before I ate again. Now I eat every few hours but i have been heavy on the carbs for the past 8-9 months. That said, another poster on here suggested to me that I go ultra clean, ultra low carb, high Protein for 5-7 days for the same 'reset' effect. I have done that too. Also, Dr. Alvarez from Endobariatric (NOT my doctor, but I watch his videos) has a youtube video that talks about a 'reset' far out and he says that there's just no way that 2-3 years post op we can get the same satisfaction from some yogurt or broth as we had immediately post op. And he is so right. Of the two, I absolutely prefer the latter plan. HANDS DOWN!!! Love the fact that i'm eating actual food, and i'm feeling really full when I eat it. I am actually on one of those paths right now, just trying to get my eating under control and detox from soda and carbs. I'm generally doing protein and veg, and trying to stay <50g carbs a day. After I get some control back I plan to go keto (probably in about 10-14 days from now). Good luck with whatever you decide, any path to cleaning up your diet is a good one!

It's hard to know what's working when you keep changing several of the variables (food, exercise and meal timing). One week is not a longtime and depending on how far out you are, we lose much slower now. To shed water weight, I go ketogenic (less than 20 g of carbs a day). I can drop 5 pounds of water weight that way. Long term though I struggle to stay Keto, I feel better at around 30-40 g of carbs. Slower loss but more doable. I have to remind myself that there was a time when weighing 150 lbs (or anything under 200 lbs) seemed like an unattainable fantasy. Being a few pounds above goal? I have had worse problems and I was ecstatic to be at this weight during my first year post op. Enjoy your cruise.

I wanna know about carbs... Seriously!
Travelher replied to KindaFamiliar's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I belong to a facebook group run by a sleever who is a nutritional counselor. She recommends a balanced macro plan for losing weight. She suggests: 35% carbs, 25% fat and 40% Protein (just set up your macros that way in my fitnesspal). if you want to go deeper and look at sugar and Fiber the two should cancel each other out ideally. This is total carbs, not net. My own dietician says less than 100 grams of carbs is extreme low carb and wants me to up mine. I'm comfortable in the 30-35% range (which usually puts me around 70-75 grams. As I continue to be able to eat more I'll get more complex carbs in (probably mostly from vegetables, maybe fruit) so I will be in the 100 gram range, but still in the macro range she suggests. I have noticed that my memory and frankly, thinking has improved since upping my carbs to the 30-35% range. the facebook group is called recipes for weight loss success...of course it is a great source of bari friendly recipes. she's also doing a month of Keto recipes for those who follow keto. I was worried I'd gain or stall when i added back in more carbs (in the form of berries and oats) and I was wrong, did not stall or even slow down. Dr. Matthew Weiner has good youtube videos on post surgery diets and has also written a book. He is a big fan of vegetables and talks about the impact food has on resetting your internal thermostat (metabolism) and how some foods raise it and some lower it. He is a fan of legumes and vegetables as a primary dietary source, suggests limiting grains and dairy and some other of my faves (lol). but it all makes sense. I have greatly cut down on cheese since following the macro plan because it drives my fat macros up pretty quickly. other than 1/4 cup of oats with 1tbs chia seeds in the morning I have no grains in my diet. -
I'm 3 weeks post op now, in the puréed stage of my diet. I will kind of be honest with regards to boredom of foods. You need to prepare yourself to be bored with food after the first few weeks of surgery. You will only be able to eat a few things, and you are lucky if those are things you enjoy eating. During this time, try finding liquids you enjoy and plan on eating those for days at a time. During the first 2 weeks there aren't many options. I found eating the broth from a Vietnamese restaurant was way better than broth from a box or can. I had planned on Jello after surgery because I enjoy it, but even the sugar free caused me to have dumping. The Protein shakes were too thick and didn't settle well on my stomach so I chose GENEPRO as a protein replacement because it's unflavored and can be mixed in anything. Try to prepare for boredom because I wasn't and it hit me hard. I'm doing as little carbs as possible (keto diet) so I cut all carbs from my diet during my liver shrink diet. I had tons of grilled chicken and veggies, spinach and chicken salads (chick filet has amazing salads), lean beef kabobs, and tuna salad. I also tried many egg dishes because that's my go to protein with avocado for breakfasts. If I craved carbs I would eat protein. I don't know why but it helped. Also jello with whip cream was amazing before surgery when I could still eat it. I've not craved carbs or Coke one time since surgery and I think it's because I already went through those struggles during pre-op. Good luck and I hope that helps some. My nutritionist suggested I increase my fats. I looked into keto but my sleeved tummy doesn't care for bacon, which I used to love before surgery, or any other breakfast meats. And mentally I'm not ready to start ingesting foods high in fats. I do eat cheese and drink whole fairlife milk and unsalted nuts. I like butter but rarely eat it and on rare occasions have avocado (never was a fan) I would love to hear what foods you guys incorporate in your keto diets. Yes, 100g carbs seems like a ton to me but she said "your body needs at least 100g of carbs a day to function". Isn't that really outdated advice? How could millions of people be doing Keto and not dropping dead?
-
Keto is mainly how I roll. Breakfast this morning was a handful of wasabi almonds, a slice of sharp cheddar and two slices of Swiss. Outstanding flavors. lunch is probably going to be an omelette of some type. dinner will most likely be grilled chicken breast as my son requested grilled chicken sandwiches with bacon and the works. I have yet to experience any type of hunger. I will get carb cravings if I eat sugar heavy foods like candy and other junk. Life is simply much easier if I avoid that mess and stick to hearty Protein and vegetables.
