  1. I also had a huge energy surge. I could only sleep 4 hours a night, and felt like the energizer bunny on steroids. I got a bike and did a triathlon and a 50 mile bike race in the first year post op. I think it is the ketosis of rapid weight loss that causes this. I started walking right away, hitting 10,000 steps a day by the end of week one, then speed walking, climbing stairs, upper body and leg exercises. I used very light weights ( 3 pounds), and did wall pushups, as well as a stretching routine. I went up to 5 pound weights on my arm exercises. Was training to do a one day rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike, and then Covid hit and the world changed. And ketosis stopped, and I don't have all the energy now that I did a year ago. I say go for it! But please, please, please follow your doctor's instructions to the tee when it comes to weights and lifting. There is a lot healing on the inside that you can't see and you DO NOT want another surgery to repair a hernia or any other damage. But use all the energy you have now to your advantage. It will put you in great metabolic condition and help the weight come off even faster. PS: We have about the same height, starting weights, and BMI. I reached my goal of 149 within 7 months. I know that is pretty fast, but I want to encourage you to go for it. You will hit 180 pretty quickly and may well discover that your body wants to keep losing. It was so exciting to get to a normal BMI. So great to hit 180, but then don't be afraid to go lower. The energy surge really helps.

    GERD with Sleeve

First of all Merry Christmas. I never had GERD or stomach issues before the sleeve. I have had 2 endoscopies and I have non-healing ulcerated stricture of the esophagus which was caused from the GERD thus the 2 pantoprazole a day. I now weigh 163, I forgot how to change my weight and ticker, and I did it by Intermittent Fasting - I eat only with in 8 hrs a day. I'm amazed how well it works and I do low carb. My goal is 142 lbs so 21 to go and I'm doing it by intermittent fasting. Lots of FB groups for it and info out there. Research the good and the bad of surgery. I would also suggest before surgery trying IF and low carb. I don't know how much you have to loose, your age or health but with surgery there is no going back. Truthfully if I had to do it over again I wouldn't of had surgery. In truth I wanted an easy and fast fix. Surgery is not it. I have had to take stool softeners since surgery due to constipation. One good thing it did was normalize my BP which was only a little high. I hope I've helped you a little with your choice and please remember there is no going back after surgery so research all you can and the Dr doing the surgery plays a big part.
  3. one thing I learned early on is to not compare myself to others. There are so many things that factor into your rate of weight loss, and several of them you really have no control over. Age, gender, metabolic rate, activity level, starting BMI, whether or not you lost weight prior to surgery, your level of commitment to your program - these all play a role in your rate of weight loss. The only things you really have any control over is how closely you follow your surgeon's eating plan and your activity level. If you do a good job with these, then the weight will come off - whether fast or slow I was a slow loser from the get-go, but I was very committed - rarely strayed from my plan - and lost all of my excess weight. I think in the end, commitment to your plan makes the most difference in your success.

    GERD with Sleeve

I've had the sleeve for 6 yrs and I have had gerd since day 1. My Dr never told me this was a side effect of sleeve. I am now on pantoprazole 2x a day and have had 2 endoscopies because of the gerd. If I had to do it over again I would of done intermittent fasting and very low carb to carnivore and not done surgery. I only lost 25 lbs and am doing IF to get the rest off.
  5. I lost 16 lbs the first month. By the end of the second month I was down 27 lbs, so I wasn't that far ahead of you. And I ended up losing every ounce of my excess weight. Just stick to your plan - the weight will come off, whether fast or slow. In the end it has everything to do with your level of commitment and very little to do with your rate of weight loss. since you have over 100 lbs to lose, you're going to have excess skin - I don't think it makes any difference if you lose the weight slowly or quickly. It's damaged from being overstretched, and it's not going to bounce back. If you were talking 20 or 30 lbs, then yes, maybe - but at 100 or more lbs, probably not. So I'd really just focus on getting the weight off while it's relatively easy. It just gets harder and harder the further out you go. Most of us are able to hide our loose skin in clothes, so no one will know it's there but you - and if it really bothers you, there's always plastic surgery.
  6. I did have that problem when talking about the upcoming surgery with my weight loss group-there were a lot of very negative and spiteful comments. I stay away from anyone I expect that from. However, since having the surgery, I lost weight very fast. I also had complications and a longer recovery so some of my neighbors took notice anyhow. My neighbors and friends know of my past health problems and even the fact of being 50 with older friends and neighbors helps a lot. I got nothing but real support and cheerleading from anyone around me and they know I have the surgery. I have a very supportive husband, adult kids, aunt and close friends. I try to be very sensitive to my close friends as they are all the weight I started at with many health problems. They will see it however and call me 'the skinny one' ha when we get together. Most times, I get the response of either, "I'll work out with you or walk with you" or, in another mood, I will get the response of, "Sorry, Dawn, we don't mean to eat this delicious pizza that you can't have anymore.....yummy!" in a sort of teasing tone with lots of laughter. My mother is someone I split ways with a long time ago and my brother was added to that list. I'm too old to have negativity and hurt in my life anymore. Sometimes, that's all you can do. I still have the voice of my mother calling me, "fat c... and other extremely bad things" but the surgery has made that so much better. At times, I even think to try to get back in touch but my aunt is right, it will just give me the same hurt that isn't necessary as my mother will never change. It sounds a lot like your situation in ways. I keep my friends private and positive only. You get a chance with me if you are a friend of a friend or a new possibility; I won't hide who I am and how happy the surgery has made me. That's on you if it's a problem or something you have to judge-it just comes from another person feeling unsatisfied in their own life and I've gone through too much in life to let something like that bother me or stay in my life. It's difficult if it's family and you have your own decisions with that but if you can't say to them that it's hurting you and you need their support, then it's time to maybe back out of that a bit while you are going through this process and keep positive people around you only. Great job on your weight loss! I know you feel just awesome and so much better in every way!

    Foods after surgery

I am able to tolerate *most* things with no issue except the following: sugar (I will dump if I have too much, too fast, especially on an empty stomach) pork (I have noticed that I get super full on pork faster than any other meat) Everyone is different, so one will need to pay attention to how they respond to certain foods and make adjustments if necessary. Good Luck! ❤️

    November 2020 sleevers

Thank you...I wouldnt say that I'm out of the soft food stage completely. I am trying new things most days and just seeing what I can do. I have only lost my cookies 1 time...and that was with grilled chicken finger..I think I ate too fast. I have found that I have been able to eat pizza toppings..no bread or crust. No peanut butter ..and i havent tried fruits really. I can eat cheese, cream cheese, soups, green beans, carrots. Mashed potatoes, grits{ well cooked vegs]..I just go slow and no matter what I'm eating take my time, chew alot..alot..and I always follow the no drink with. 30 minutes before ..or 30 minutes after. But no matter what I eat I only consume about 4 to 5 bites..I eat several small 3 or 4 bite meals daily. And taking B12, iron, biotin, and multivitamin. B12 was a game changer..I did go back to work 5 days after surgery.

    7 days post-op.

I noticed I am also noticing that my heart is beating really fast... is that happening to you?

    7 days post-op.

I am a month post op VSG and I can tell you that it gets much better fast. Try to get up and move around and stay as busy as you can to keep your mind active. The busier your mind is the less you think about it and faster time goes. Keep that water close and work on water and protein and the rest will work itself out. The more you can move about and get that water in the happier your body will be in the long run! Life will be normal in about a month, normal will look a little different and your plate will be smaller but we had our first real meal tonight (today was my first day off soft foods) and although my plate was small it was dinner as usual. Happy Holidays

Congrats and I feel the same I am in the mental phase of trying to understand how things will be as well the Full Liquid diet is not fun, I have also swallowed too fast and it felt funny just have to get use to this new life as well
  12. Tomorrow is the big day! I’m ready and nervous. All the things I’ve been saying. More for the fact that the hubs can’t be there with me, but it will be okay! Especially because it’s outpatient. Hoping tomorrow goes by fast!
  13. Your weight loss can stall with too few calories. Once, years before I was sleeved, I fasted for a whole week, thinking that consuming only clear calorie-free liquids I would really jumpstart my weight loss. I lost ZERO pounds that week!
  14. Surgery date is coming up fast!!! I have to get a COVID test pre op. Hope I’m not one of those people who pop positive with no symptoms. I’ve been self isolating aside from work. No gym or groceries stores and no Christmas w the family. 😢 But my surgery is Jan 6th! Coming up soon!! Very excited and getting a tad nervous.

Am i gonna puke all the time??

I have thrown up about 4 times this past week, but I'm in a transition week (almost 3 weeks post op) and have been introducing new food. I can't say if it was the new food or the fact I got excited and maybe ate it too fast. But you will know rather quickly. It's not a nauseous feeling, it's pretty immediate stuffed feeling. 17. Well we had a major snowstorm here in the Southern Tier of NY with over 4 ft of snow-I think shoveling all day yesterday put me over the top with weight loss lol. I woke up this morning and FINALLY got that scale to move under the 200 lb mark (no stall but just a slow down in the last week or so). I started a new job a few weeks ago at a factory and adding more hours this last week for Christmas with overtime. I am on my feet with some heavy lifting and physical activity but it's helping with the exercise part. I had gained about a lb a week ago and figured it was for the muscle content with the increased movement to my daily normal activity but now it's going down fast again. Also marks 100 lb weight loss since program start this year-holy cow! My Dr and hospital scales are all one lb less then my scale-actually down to 197- but who's counting that close? ME, that's who! lol. I don't think many people outside of this group can understand how much my life has changed and is changing for this surgery. I work and am tired but no excrutiating pain for days after with just a few hours on my feet. Honestly I can bend, move and be fast with productivity at my workplace and feel awesome with a good day of work. I can take a freakin bath!!!! and feel just so skinny! My husband and I have a renewed relationship in all aspects but one aspect not mentioning that has been awesome :-)! Hey, I'm old-not dead lol. I sit down and have room with my animals able to sit on a lap that I now have and I am able to easily bend to clean the pens, guinea pig areas and even to play with my chihuahuas or walk with my family. It's just surreal how different and wonderful I feel. Oh I have my precious Holland Lop bunnies that are basically free roam and 9 guinea pigs rescued. I clean constantly and able to do that on top of work with really no problems. 40 more lbs to go. My birthday was Jan 21 of this year- I turned 48 and hit an unbelievable depression. I truly hated myself as the scale approached 300 lbs and I couldn't even walk. That's what spurred the research for medical weight loss and was able to start the program a month later-changed my life!! So grateful! I now wear a size 16/18-holy cow! Last year I barely fit a size 28.

    Sleeve to Bypass & hungry?

YES! I was sleeved in 2012. After my GB I was hungry for 4 weeks! it’s like okay yes I don’t have reflux which is SOOO nice but sometimes I think wow I should have just stayed w my sleeve. But now that I’m losing weight I’m good lol okay try hard boiled egg smashed w lil light Mayo, avocado, fat free beans, cauliflower mash. Measure 1/4 cup. Use baby spoon. Set a timer or stopwatch so you can see how fast you are eating. Set it for 20 min. You need to take that long to eat. Best wishes to you, your energy will return. Since my surgery date I’ve lost 19 pounds too but yes yours is fast! Hope you feel better. Walk daily.
  19. Yeah I'll be 5 months out next week and I haven't had any discomfort since the first month or so as long as I don't eat or drink too fast. It sounds like you might have something else going on. I'd give the surgeon a call. I hope you find answers and relief! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Eating slowly

I grew up the youngest in a large family so I was trained to eat fast from birth! I still eat faster than I should, but I’m meticulous about keeping only the amount of food on my plate I should be eating. I feel like training myself to eat slower is more of a struggle than eating smaller amounts. Sigh.

What do you eat in a day?

First: I want to say that I LOOOOVE looking at my old food logs, so thank you for giving me an actual excuse to do so, LOL. Secondly: the mandatory disclaimer: we are all really different and how I ate may not be doable nor desirable for others. Always check with a medical professional for nutritional advice and make informed decisions. Anyhoo, I looked up what I was eating at the 1 month mark and it was quite empty, so I fast forwarded a couple weeks to when I started eating more "food", so to speak. Here are screenshots of 6 consecutive food dairy logs at the 1.5 month mark. I tended (and sort of still do) to eat the same thing for days, which was/is fine for me. Note that the last screenshot of 150-ish calories was a one-off for this period, I think I may have run out of protein powder or something. As you can see i only once hit my 60-70g protein goal during this 6 day period (though i think i was surpassing my water goals by alot). This improved in the later months.
  22. Sometimes experimenting with new foods that are on plan is the only thing you can do. My hunger came back around month 5, but for some reason it's mostly only in the morning with the rare appearance at night. Very strange lol. And, I live in house where I'm the only one on a special diet and everyone else is eating cakes, pizza, cookies, donuts, pie, fast food, etc. and it's hard, but you just think about the weight you've lost and the amount you still have left to lose and then it's easy to say "no" or at least it is in my case. It just isn't worth it to go off plan when I'm so close to my goal weight! If you need to then sit your mom down and tell her that she isn't helping you by guiding you to the wrong foods and that you'd really like her support by NOT offering the wrong foods to you, that you love her, but you're trying really hard to keep on plan and you need her to help you out in that.

    Surgery postponed due to Covid

Well yesterday I got a call from the scheduler, that they are starting up scheduling surgeries again because the hospital did not get as slammed as they thought it would. There is a tiny chance that I will be able to fit in at the end of December. I'm 4th on their list with a possible date of Dec 28 or 29. It just depends on how fast the schedule fills up with people that are higher on the list. Glad I didn't start up my pain medication again, and restarted my liver shrinking diet. Crossing fingers! (P.S. this liver shrinking diet isn't for sissies ... 20 carbs per day? bleh. Now I remember why I hated Atkins...)
