Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having
Sandra Nuelken replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I said I was doing a modified Keto diet, and I just wasn't hungry with it. I only had a few very funny happenings. Toward the end of the year, one of the students asked if I was dying as I kept getting smaller. Another thing that happened to me was my stomach was growling all of the time. During state testing when everyone was absolutely quietly working on their tests off would go my stomach for about 2 minutes. They were used to it so they tried to not laugh. When I told them I had to lose weight for health reasons they were very supportive, unusual for middle school students! Good luck!!! I'm now waiting for my insurance approval. -
Have you tried keep low carb/low calorie sweets on you? I try to keep something on me, so if I get tempted I have a better option. Lily's chocolate, protein bar, protein brownie, keto cookie, something. Long term I think it is better to have replacements than just try to flat out deprive yourself. At least it is working for me

Questions From a Pre-Op Patient
Arabesque replied to Spitfireash's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had five incisions in line with my belly button. They were small 10-15mm. They healed over a couple of weeks. I used bio oil too & now I have to look hard to see the scars: they’re little faint lines. Yes, you’ll have saggy skin. It stretched out carrying your weight. Factors like your age, gender, genetics, how long you were at your highest weight, how overweight you were all impact how much sagging you’ll have. As catwoman7 said saggy skin is better than being obese & unhealthy & you can have skin removal. I didn’t have much loose skin when I reached my goal weight but I do have more on my upper inner thighs & upper arms now that I’ve lost more. I just don’t wear short shorts or strappy or strapless tops. I’m just wearing ordinary cotton hipster briefs under this dress. Oh, & my breasts are pretty deflated. Walking is excellent post surgery. Start walking at the hospital to help get rid of the gas they fill your abdomen with during surgery. Your surgical team will probably advise when you can start to increase your activity or introduce other options. I was put on a keto diet for 2 1/2 weeks pre surgery so I can’t advise on what your diet requires. Your dietician or surgeon should have given you a plan to follow. Good luck. -
AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hahahaha! IKR?!!!! You are more brave than I! No way will I tell my RD about this experiment! What this is telling me is that I can do Atkins (any version), I can LC, I can Keto/Paleo/Whole30, whatevs! LOL. But I'm not cut out to be a pure carnivore. I'm a straight up, mid-hedonist omnivore! And IIIIIIIIIIII LIKE IT! Ha! I swear, I was jonesing for any veg yesterday. ANY veg. And I about cried to eat that broccoli and it was gone so dang quickly! *snort* I think the reasoning for doing this AMAW/CAMAW thing is: 1. To get back to basics of protein first and fill your pouch with dense protein. 2. Eat less (calling BS on this, cuz it made me have a meat binge last night) 3. Dump fluid. 4. Quick weight loss 5. Losing cravings/control appetite (not so much) *sigh* So far it's not helping. But maybe I'm detoxing right now? I do better when I IF. Seriously! LOL, thanks for experimenting with us though. I hope you will stick it out for the whole week? The only thing I think would be worse is the pre-op liquid diet 5 day pouch reset. OMAGERD! That would be terrible terbs! -
I borrowed this idea from another site. But to be fair, it's a concept that is not new to the low carb/keto community. Atkins '72 had you shoot for your daily protein goal and to keep your carbs (whole, non-net carbs) to about 10g or less per day (loosely). If you can't do <10g of carbs per day, then try to keep them as low as possible and definitely do NOT exceed 20g of whole non-net carbs. So those of you who know me, know I get bored with my same ol' same ol' routine! So I felt like mixing things up and tightening up the carb wagon a bit. I'm eating a crap ton of carbs for my body (about 50-60g per day whole which comes out to about 30-40g net after fiber subtraction). And what tends to happens when you lower your carbs is that you up dietary ketosis (aka you become a fat burning monster, especially if you've already been low carb for a while--you lose your appetite; drop water retention; and you might just lose a couple of pounds of fat in the bargain--you also return back to easy satiety). And come on...after Fatsgiving, don't we all need to adopt a little austerity? The rules of the game are simple: AMAW = All Meat All Week (Meet only for the week--but I'm gonna include eggs, egg whites, poultry, game, domestically and internationally produced red meats, etc, cured meats/jerky/biltong, et al, bone broths and stocks and also all seafood/fish in the meat category) CAMAW = All Cheese and Meat All Week (although personally I think it should be MACAW rather than CAMAW and I'm gonna include other forms of dairy + protein supplements + non-milk dairy like almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk provided it fits into the carbs/calories scenario previously discussed, since you're already eating cheese--it just has to fit into your 10g-20g of whole carbs for the day.) Fats = Healthy Fats as much as you want/can handle (or as little) provided you stay within your daily carb/caloric goal for the day. This would not ideally include nuts/seeds/nut butters, but again, if that is the line in the sand for you, then we'd rather you play with us for the week rather than sit it out cuz you need your mother truckin' nuts. Right? Am I right? Healthy sources of fats = olive oil, evoo, evco, evpo, avocado oil, mct oil, grassfed butter, avocados, lard, tallow, schmalz (rendered chicken, duck, or goose fat), and if you choose to eat nuts/seeds/nutbutters they would also provide fat as well as protein and carbs. Water/Liquids = 100oz or more per day Vitamins = Of forkin' course, silly! Coffee = yes Tea = yes ****************************** We'll start tomorrow, Sunday December 2, and continue through Saturday, December 8. Who's with me?

Confusion About Requirements (Denmark)
BoredFatGirl replied to BoredFatGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was like pulling teeth to get my OB/GYN to prescribe me Metformin, as she said it wasn't meant for use outside of fertility and because of my weight, she couldn't give me the treatment. However, I found a ton of medical studies, kept pestering her, and she ended up caving. She gave me a 3 month supply of Metformin (which runs out next month, so we will have to discuss getting more soon.. Hopefully it won't be so hard for me this time). I assume the Metformin is the reason for such rapid weight loss (besides going on a mostly-keto diet since starting it). However, not too much else has changed -- I haven't even had a period in over 130+ days at this point. Thank you for the recommendations!! I was dancing for 30 mins a day to get my exercise in, but that has stopped since I came back from the states. I need to get back on it. It was a lot of fun and definitely got me to work up a sweat. -
If you DIDN'T do Liquid Pre-Op what DID you do?
Arabesque replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dietician had me on keto for a couple of weeks before surgery. My surgeon puts all his patients on a pre-surgery diet to reduce fat around the liver & give him a clearer line of sight during surgery. He put my friend, with a much higher starting BMI than me, on a protein shake diet pre surgery. Maybe too lose a little more pre surgery??? -
Dietician Stuff...help me not be a jerk...

That’s good to hear. It’s taken so much work to change my mindset from “eat all the things” to keto. If all I need to do is dial back my fat, I should be good. -
Dietician Stuff...help me not be a jerk...
🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺 replied to 🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
UPDATE: Yep, I was definitely overthinking things The dietician was so nice and very helpful. We talked for a good hour and a half and the best part is, she's down with keto! She said her main focus right now is to get me prepared for life after surgery like working on weaning off caffeine and mindful eating. Also, these dietician visits are free and unlimited even after surgery which is flippin' great! My mind is at ease now -
So I've arranged my first dietician consult, which is interestingly done remotely via WebEx video conference (not relevant to this post, but just interesting). Any who...I was given a lengthy PDF packet to read through regarding general nutrition and as I read it, I find I don't agree with some of the information. I've been living relatively strict keto, High Fat/Moderate Protein/Low Carb for nearly 2 years and I'm afraid I'm going to get into this consult and butt heads with the poor person. Not on purpose, but I really don't want to change the way I eat because I know what happens when I eat the stuff that is considered OK. I get bloated, I gain weight, my face gets puffy, my feet get swollen...etc. My body likes keto and most "health professionals" aren't on that bandwagon. Any words of advice from anyone that's gone through their diet consults would be awesome. I know the best thing is to just smile and nod, but I know this girl is going to want active participation.

I’m not doing a full keto diet, but do have a focus on almost exclusively lean protein, which has worked really well. Adding in carbs now that I’m 6 months out and that has almost doubled my caloric intake (you can eat a lot more carbs).

liver shrink diets aren’t the same
Arabesque replied to Thicc chick 504's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seems to be lots of variations of pre surgery diets. I was on a keto diet for 2.5weeks before with no minimum weight loss required. One friend was on 2 weeks all shakes no specified weight loss required Another was on 2 meals shakes & one meal high protein, no carbs over 4weeks with a minimum weight loss requirement. I found the diet helped get you in the new mindset in regard to eating. Good luck with your surgery. -
Why different diets from different doctors?
ichabodny replied to Normandagle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon did the very same with me. Our NUT is in house and works as part of the team but I do have a Dr in the team besides my surgeon. My Dr is more strict with my diet while my NUT is a bit more easy-going. At this point (close to 3 months post op now) my NUT has always answered me by saying to not worry about calories right now. They just want me to get my proteins met first and foremost and then add anything I can else that is on the list (it does include potatoes, beans, fruits, keto ice-cream, etc) and she says to add some potato if it's easier to eat with chicken to get down. However, I read about a lot of different protein level preferences (always the same lowest but some require much, much higher) and even vitamin differences. Just follow what your Dr says. A lot also can depend on specific health problems, ages, prior history, etc. -
Anybody do keto diet before surgery?
jobeth.rny replied to juju7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I began keto the Monday after my surgery info session at the end of Feb. I have lost 65 lbs since then following the keto diet. My nutritionist didn't recommend it but she said as long as it was working I could do it. She wanted me to follow a high protein low fat diet. I stayed keto up until the start of my liquid diet, which was Monday 8/21. My surgery is 8/31. I questioned whether or not I wanted to have surgery since I was so successful with the keto diet... but I still have 100+ lbs to lose and I'm not getting any younger. I plan to stay low carb following surgery, eventually transitioning to keto if my body allows it. My labs have improved dramatically and I'm no longer pre-diabetic thanks to keto. -
3months out, suddenly zero hunger
gigiinDC replied to gigiinDC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone. I'm just amazed cause I had a huge appetite up until this week. Now nothing. I also don't have a typical menu but I definitely stay under 50g carbs, usually under 25, and 60-85 g Protein . On Keto I end up eating a lot of bacon, eggs, meatballs , cottage cheese, organic turkey deli meat and low lactose cheeses, salmon and broccoli or string Beans. I added sauerkraut and bone broth for GAPS. I get almost no grains and zero fruit. Amazingly I stopped craving carbs almost immediately after starting Keto... that was the first craving to go away. Now I really don't crave anything so I'm forcing myself to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
6 month diet plan being waived
Berry78 replied to smb123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My 17 year old daughter also has IIH. She notices her symotoms subside when she loses a few pounds, and come back when she gains. She is 5'5 and around 195lbs. She hasn't had surgery. I'd recommend talking with your surgeon about going on a ketogenic diet while waiting for the surgery. As long as you are losing weight you are headed in the right direction to save your vision. A keto diet will have you eating about 60g of protein and 20g of net carbs a day. Plenty of fat. Lots of meat and green veggies. You can start this TODAY as long as you aren't diabetic or have other health issues (like problems with low blood sugar or the like). With your vision on the line, I'm sure you are willing to do whatever it takes. Liquid diets also knock the pounds off quickly too. And don't worry about messing up your metabolism before surgery. Surgery will reset everything. Good luck! -
Is this all i will lose?
PAstudent replied to dgarcia27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Assuming you stick to your plan, you Will lose more! The human body isn't magic. It doesn't run on rainbows and fairy dust, it runs on stored energy (fat and muscle) and what you put into it. So, if you're restricting calories and eating the right kinds of foods, you will lose weight! If you're in a stall and need some assurance that you are losing fat, I like keto strips. They're cheap, all you do is pee on a strip and it tells you what level of ketones are in your urine. Ketones are one sign that your body is in ketosis and is rapidly burning fat. Also, 36 pounds is great! I'm 2.5 months out and only got to 36 pounds today. Follow your meal plan, exercise (whether it be when things are cool in the morning/evening or at a gym), and keep your head up! -

@Joann454 I started researching this today after your post and I found this article with links to other literature http://www.ketotic.org/2014/12/the-effect-of-ketogenic-diets-on.html?m=1 It may be that lower T3 while on. Can I add sugar to my hot tea when I'm on clear liquids?
Berry78 replied to serenityjames81's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A keto diet means it is ketogenic, basically very very low carb, high Protein and fat. Being a few years out, you are now in the maintenance phase. Think of yourself the same as you were before the surgery, or same as "regular folk". The weight loss strategies the rest of the world uses are going to apply to you. Take a little time to decide which train to jump on. Go to your local library and/or bookstore, go to the diet/nutrition section, and behold! Everything from South Beach Diet to Mediterranean to Atkins, etc. Keto will be there. Read through the various concepts, and see if any of them sound like something that will work for you. If they promise weight loss without exercise, ignore that part. You must exercise! Good luck! Sent from my SM-N920R4 using the BariatricPal App -
can someone please help me understand my husband?
thewifehere posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I met my husband in 2007 he was 22, super fit, very muscular, and weighed 190 pounds at 6'0" tall. He was chubby as a child, raised by his dad and didn't grow up in a healthy eating household. He lost weight in high school, gained it back early college, then lost weight again at the end when I met him. Fast forward to now and over the past decade he's eaten too much bad food, drank too much beer, had too much life stress and work stress and now weighs 300 pounds (BMI 40.7 btw). He's talked for years about wanting to lose weight, he'll low carb for a little bit and have some success but then falls off the wagon and feels bad for himself and decides to 'start tomorrow' or keep putting it off. This has been frustrating for me to say the least. I've had his 3 kids, love to be active, and truly enjoy eating and cooking healthy and making good food choices. I weigh the very same I did when I met him (115 pounds at 5'3" tall) and have always cared about staying healthy. We are in a rough spot in our marriage right now because of many stressors, one of which is this weight issue. It's not so much the weight as it is the reason for the weight, the constant procrastination, the food and beer that he put ahead of our marriage for so long. I know he's unhappy, so why does he eat almost an entire pizza in one sitting tonight? He always TALKS about wanting to be healthy, but then does the opposite. I just cannot understand it. He had a protein shake for breakfast, cooked a healthy 'hello fresh' meal for lunch, and then had that pizza for dinner. I feel awful for even posting this, I know this is his journey but at the same time I have feelings too and my feelings are that I want to be with someone who has the same values that I do, cares about being healthy for his children and me in the long term, cares about his appearance, cares about his food choices. I brought up the lap band to him last week saying I thought it was something he should look into and consider, at the time I thought it was something temporary he could put in, lose the weight, and then take out when he got to where he wanted to be. Now I'm learning that's not the case and I've discouraged him from WLS. Truly if he could just do keto like he always says he wants to do, actually STICK with keto and making good choices then I KNOW he could do it, I know that if he'd just commit to the lifestyle change that he could accomplish his goal. But now he's saying he wants to do the lap band so it forces him. And I worry this is a recipe for disaster. If he doesn't have the will power to commit to keto on a daily basis I worry that something like WLS will throw him further into a depression because it's such a permanent choice. I don't know how to properly support him. I want him to lose weight because I know he will be SO MUCH happier in literally every aspect of his life. But why can't he just choose to do something like keto, stick with something. Do I support this WLS idea? I just don't know. I don't want him to be unhappy and miserable forever. And at the same time I want my healthy fit husband that I married 11 years ago. Edit: he wants the band for a year only so he can lose the 100 lbs by following the protocol to the T and then take it out and maintain by being super diligent with his diet and exercise. He says 'he's done it before' twice once in HS and once in college and knows he can, but wants the 'sure thing' with the lap band forcing him to lose that 100 lbs. -

I’ve already tried that 😭 we turned it off half way through because he kept arguing it was propaganda. We’d recently watched Forks over Knives and I was sold on WFPB. He’s not. He believes in keto. -
I never rethought about it, I just occupy myself with things. I'm just starting out, they have put me on something like a keto diet. When I start thinking of food I draw, read, or bug my grand kids. I m sure after I have surgery it may be a bit different

FluffyChix replied to MrsKarenC2008's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so yes, I've had 1 episode of RH. Sorry you are dealing with this. But it's common. I would personally NOT add carbs. By keeping enough protein and fats in your diet to be truly keto, you will level and flatten out your blood sugar/insulin response. When you add carbs, you increase the amplitude of the blood sugar rollercoaster and the severity of the RH. The big thing to know is if you are truly hypo or if for some odd reason, you're turning into a T1 diabetic (not producing insulin) and that sometimes happens suddenly to adults. It's called LADA. But, if it were me (and it is), I'd buy a test meter and carry it with you at the first sign of symptoms. I'd buy packages of peanut butter you can squeeze into your mouth. And also carry glucose tablets in your purse. 5g of glucose tablets will raise blood glucose usually about 10points. So in an emergency you eat 2 of them and bam, emergency gone. Then you follow with a packet of peanut butter. Or nuts. Then you have to be on the lookout for the rollercoaster that "might" happen for the next day or two. I followed about two hours later wtih a very low carb, higher protein/fat mini meal. And had no other issues. -
A normal daily diet for the sleeve
tmcx28 replied to ready4therealme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today was this: Breakfast: Egg with cheese and a slice of bacon Snack: light babybel cheese Lunch: zucchini noodles (very little) with 2 oz chicken baked with a roasted red pepper and basil Snack: Birthday cake muscle butter with 1/4th if an apple Dinner: teeny tiny burger with cheese, no bun Babybel cheese and pepperoni have been favorite Snacks, I've also been eating turkey meatballs and shepherds pie made with ground turkey and cauliflower mash. Pinterest has been my best friend. I have so many low carb/keto recipes saved. I feel like I'm still able to eat amazing food just much much less of it. -
Six days out...does that mean you are having surgery in six days? If so what this is doing is shrinking your liver making it easier to get the sleeve done (liver right above stomach). Ketosis (https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto) is a quick way to make it happen.
