  1. Initial appointments today! Meeting with my Bariatric surgeon at 10:30 am, appointments with the dietician and exercise specialist after!!!! I’m so anxious, excited, nervous. Ready to do this, been waiting a long time. The health issues have piled on as of late and my weight keeps climbing. Starting weight today of 284.2 pounds, height 5’1” and BMI 53.7.
  2. My husband and I grew up in two very different households when it came to food. Our relationships with food are very different. In his 40's, he's been on occasional diets but he's not that concerned with his weight. It is what it is. I grew up dieting from the age of 9/10. There are many days that I only eat maybe one meal a day. On the other hand, he wakes up hungry, wants to call and talk about dinner at 9am, calls at 1 to ask about what I had for lunch and reconfirm dinner plans, and wants to know when we are eating dinner before I can put my purse down most nights. Yesterday was Mother's Day and while I don't have to start my pre-op until June 1, I have started a pre pre-op diet for myself. He just couldn't understand that I didn't want to go out to eat. I relented and we went. The place served bread which I didn't touch, my husband and kids shared an appetizer that I couldn't/didn't have, then salads before our entrees came out. I made a smart aleck comment of "Thank you for letting me know how much I'm appreciated by bringing me to a restaurant to watch y'all eat." Yes, it was petty, but I don't know how to get him to understand that this is a permanent change for me and restaurants are not really something for the foreseeable future that I'm going to enjoy. Thanks for any advice.

    Lab orders without doctor

Oh dear - this would be my worst nightmare, LOL. It's not the availability or the cost of the tests that would bother me, it's their interpretation. What do you do if the result is 1% above the normal range, or 10%, or 18.5%? Or the same amount below? What if you got the result on a Friday night - is it safe to wait until Monday morning to phone your doctor to discuss or could it kill you over the weekend? And a million other variables. I just could not do this - I think you need a clinician both to know what is appropriate to order in the first place and to know what the significance is if the result isn't slap bang in the middle of the normal range. Having said that I know it's horses for courses and you may have better than average medical knowledge - good luck with your results!
  4. I am scheduled for lap band removal/DS surgery on 5/23. Starting the pre-op diet on Monday. Eeeeek!! I was banded back in 2008. I'm 5'4" and my weight before surgery was 290-something. I lost about 130 lbs in the first year, and maintained at around 165-175 (for me this weight equated to around a size 10, which I was fairly pleased with) for almost 10 years. I had a Tummy Tuck in 2016 and believe that my band was nicked when the plastic surgeon moved my port. In any case i suffered a 'slow leak' in the band that my surgeon Dr. Elariny could not pinpont, even under fluoroscopy, and have not really had any restriction for the last 5 years. I have sloooowwwwlly gained back up to 215 lbs during that time. I'm scared to death and simultaneously super excited for the DS surgery.
  5. Hi everybody! I had my surgery (Gastric sleeve) on 01/08/18. Everything went well, I was 245 lb and i went down to 128 lb. I was feeling so good, so healthy, so happy.... I got married and my life was perfectly fine! Last year, in October I found out I was pregnant... Unfortunately on December i had a miscarriage. During my short pregnancy I had to be fully in bed. I gained 30 pounds! and now I can't go back to my normal weight. I am feeling so depressed, my doctor said that he can't help me because he only help with surgeries. so, I don't know what I can do! I am eating healthy, working out... drinking water.... Can someone help me? I am so depressed.... sad... without help :(
  6. This is weird... but seeing my knee caps again. I haven't seen them since 2019. My legs are still chubby but they're starting to look like a normal leg shape overall haha I took a picture of them because I was surprised to see it when I had my legs propped up on a table (not good manners, I know but no one eats or even sits out on this table in my household). Yay to having visible kneecaps! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Can't Decide!

It’s really just a personal decision if there is not a glaring medical reason to choose one over the other. I am on medications and worried about absorption issues of bypass affecting them so I went with sleeve but I knew that I was possibly going to lose a few less pounds than I would with bypass. I think from my research the difference in weight loss between the two surgeries was only like 5-10% of excess weight which for me ended up being just a few pounds but I was lower BMI to start. If you eat a lot of sweets however the bypass could be even better for loss because you may dump on sugar which will help you stay away from them. But not everyone dumps from sugar so that’s not guaranteed.

    Weight stall at 9 months

We all lose at our own rate & unfortunately our rate of loss slows as we get closer to goal. I wouldn’t worry about the 3lb weight gain. Yes, it could be a fluctuation & it could be as you said, you’re not monitoring your food intake as often & have gone off plan. Getting back on your plan is your best way forward. I wouldn’t worry too much about your level of activity. I really didn’t & still don’t exercise. I lost all my weight & more. The truth is exercise accounts only for a 10-20% loss of the weight you have to lose. Got 50lbs to lose, exercising will account for only 5-10lbs. Of course there are physical, emotional & psychological benefits to exercise which will influence your decision but how much & how often you exercise is ultimately yours.
  9. I am 10 days away from my surgery I am having difficulty sticking on my my fluid diet since I heard you can shrink your liver in one week. I keep postponing my start and enjoy stuff I wouldn't be able to eat after surgery. 😕 How are you guys doing or how you did it? P.S Being without coffee is the hardest, I could do coffee and water for 2 days straight.

I will eat real food again right?

I appreciate all of the replies. I know that I will eat food again, my post was more of a day 10 pre op diet mental temper tantrum. It feels so close yet so far away!
  11. I am a 69 y/o female that had VSG on 8/10/21. I am a slow loser, I have lost 51 pounds. I have gained 3 lbs back. Depressed also have eaten some high carb foods, but have gotten back on diet. Am retired not alot of physical activity. I do try to ride stationary bike. Any other people that are having similar problems? Would appreciate any advice on breaking stall.

I will eat real food again right?

I'm 10 days post op and my stomach is talking to me a lot now. I can't even have veggies or jello yet. Im just soooo hungry lol
  13. Hi I have been reading through some of these to see if anyone has any of the same issues as me. This is the first time I'm writing anything. I had gastric bypass surgery on 12/2/21. I have had a lot of downs and some ups. I haven't seen anywhere if someone had the same complications as I had. They said that they scratch my liver but there was no bleeding so it was fine. But what actually happened was they punctured it in two places and my abdomen filled with bile and collapsed part of my lung so much pain. Then the bile came through one of the incisions. So gross. Had to go back in to surgery to see what happened that's when they found the punctures and put in a drainage tube also gross but made the pain less. I was down about a month and a half. Went through going through the motions of throwing up with nothing coming up for a month or so. Gas pains for about 2 months now I'm just super burpy which at times can be super embarrassing at times. I'm 5'6" started my journey at 290 and was 286 just before surgery and now I'm at 205 so I'm down 85 lb total and 81 since surgery December so I'm happy about that went from a size 19/20 pants and 3x shirt to a 10 in pants and medium shirt. So I know I'm doing good but there are days I look in the mirror and just can't see the weight loss. Does anyone else have this issue? I also can't stand chicken it makes me physically sick even the smell makes nauseated. Pork chops are also gross. And the crystal light I always liked can't stand. Also the only water I can drink without getting sick is smart water. So has anyone else had any of these things? Did anyone have their liver punctured? I know I asked a lot of questions but if anyone has any info on any or all would love to hear.
  14. Hi there! So leading up to surgery, I got hooked on weekly trips to a local infrared sauna. I really enjoy it as a peaceful time to relax and maybe even reap some health/physical benefits. I paused my membership before surgery to focus on bigger things, but my membership resumes on 5/10, which will be 20 days out from my VSG. My incisions look good; surgical glue has completely flaked off of one! Anyway! How soon do you think is too soon to get back into the sauna? Anyone else frequent infrared saunas??? I really want to get back but I don’t want to do any damage. (I have asked my doctor before and he said he doesn’t know much about them. I’ve been cleared to go to the gym, swim, and be generally non-strenuously active)

High Risk -- Scared of complications

My surgeon never said this to me. I was 390 pounds, 5'6", bmi 63. had hypertension and high blood pressure. I also have PCOS which makes weight loss EXTREMELY difficult to do and maintain. And never once did my surgeon say these things. I'm glad yours was honest with you, but I think there may have been a better way to go about it. Also, I didn't have to do any blood thinners before the surgery. I have to do them now post op (2x a day for 10 days) but he has everyone do it because he knows we all heal differently and may not be able to walk as much as we should and he wants to prevent clots. I think those of us with higher weight and bmi and also with multiple comorbidities have to be extra careful, but I don't think it's anything we should be afraid of with the surgery. Think of it this way.....how much worse will you and your health be if you DON'T have the surgery? Will you be able to get back to a healthy life and weight without it? IF not, then to me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks for the surgery. That's what ultimately made the decision for me. I wanted my life back, and I knew there was zero chance of it happening without the surgery.
  16. SleeveToBypass2023

Ok, so here's some SUPER flattering pics lol

I have to do them 2x a day for 10 days. We're doing my other arm now. Once that becomes too sore/bruised, I may have to think about my stomach. Right now, no. Too much going on there and hurts a lot still.

    May 2022 surgery?

hi, and welcome. I'm 67 and hoping for bypass and hernia repair in mid-june. I meet with my surgeon for what they call the Results (from pre-procedure testing) Visit on may 16. I am hoping that I can be given a date for surgery at that visit. What someone told you here is what I have been told regarding post surgery eating plan, BUT I do know that it all depends on one's healing. I wish I had done this about 10 years when the lbs started coming on, the weight fluctuation began, and no matter what I did, I did not lose. Good luck!
  18. I am in one right now. Surgery was on 4/18 and first week lost 9 lbs. since then nothing. It’s been 10 days….😩
  19. SleeveToBypass2023

My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

Yeah, I wasn't expecting those lol The rest, yeah. But those are some nasty bruises. And I have to do those blood thinner shots 2x a day for 10 days. I'm not a fan, gotta be honest.

    So fed up

Stalls are frustrating. Unfortunately you may experience a few as you’re losing & they may last 1-3 weeks (some do last longer - if yours does check with your dietician to see if you need to tweak your eating plan) but they are just part of the journey. There are lots of variation in the plans people follow. Some are given caloric goals while some aren’t (I wasn’t). Some are given portion size recommendations. Some aren’t. Some who are given caloric goals are encouraged to eat 1200 calories from solid foods. If you are worried, check with your dietician. Even on 1200 calories you will lose weight. As @lizonaplane said the goal is not to feel discomfort or your restriction. The goal is to recognise your real hunger & eat enough to satisfy that. At three years out, I still ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. Remember it takes time for your full signal to kick in. So when you do feel full you’ve likely eaten more than you need. Exercise accounts for 10-20% of your weight loss. Have 50lbs to lose, exercise will account for 5-10lbs. There are lots of physical, psychological & emotional benefits to undertaking regular exercise. But it’s your choice as to what & how much or often you do. I’m not an exerciser. Did very little while I was losing but I still lost all my weight plus more. I do some gentle stretches now & a few wall push-ups but I argue with myself every night about doing it. 😁

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Atkins Plus is 30 grams of protein. 1 gram of sugar. It appears to meet the requirements I was given: at least 15 grams of protein, 20 grams or less total carbs (it has 9), 10 grams or less sugar (it has 1), 10 grams or less total fat (it has 5). If I'm missing something, please let me know -- seriously. I don't want to mess this up. Thanks in advance.
  22. Hi I am 7 weeks in after gastric sleeve- Till the week I started eating solid food at 5 weeks I was losing between 0.5 to 1 pound a day Then it started getting lower till it stalled 10 days ago and I actually gained 2 pounds over the last 10 days - I had taken water pills a couple of times as I noticed swelling around my ankles so I am not sure if the gain back is a result of that My calories intake are between 900 and 1100- Carbs are low- I do more proteins as needed- drink water sometimes 64 ounce sometimes 60 ounces- I workout 3 times/ week now I walk every day I also do intermittent fast 13/11 everyday I am getting very frustrated almost regretting the decision of the surgery as I historically lost more weight on diets the problem was that I always regained the weight I lost 35 pounds since I started and 28 pounds since the day of the surgery Any thoughts? Thank you

One more try before surgery again

I can eat about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of food at a time (I am 9 weeks post op). No I cannot physically feel like anything has been done to me. Currently, I am trying to avoid processed carbs, foods with high sodium content, and high fat foods unless it good fat like an avocado. I don't eat any bread except a extremely tiny piece (about two bites) of good sourdough bread at a nice Sunday dinner. I focus on getting my protein in first and then eating veggies. Most of the time I cannot eat many if any veggies. Snacks are a yogurt or light string cheese with some almonds or fruit. The recovery was more painful than I had thought it would be but by day 10 or so I was almost normal. I did have a large hiatal hernia that was repaired so that is probably why my recovery took a little longer and was more painful.

    May 2022 surgery?

I cannot sleep it seems. I may dose off for about 10-20 mins but thats about it. I have some oxycodone but I havent taken it yet for fear of nausea and nothing being my stomach
  25. I'd love to be honest about it. The weight loss is nice...but I still have to be VERY DISCICPLINED in what I eat or I REGAIN weight. Also, I woke up from surgery with horrid GERD that has not gone away and HUNGRY. I still get hungry (famished) just like before the surgery. Long term GERD and PPI use have significant health issues associated with them. I have moderate anemia now (10 years post op), and can't seem to absorb enough through food. I may have to have Iron infusions. I have to have an endoscopy to check on things next month. I may have to have a revision to bypass. I hope it's not more serious than needing a revision (Please God, no Barrett's esophagus, or {gulp} cancer). Most times, I am OK and have come to acceptance for the most part...but other times I seriously regret having 85% of my stomach removed (I really didn't have any co-morbidities) and I get a little freaked out about what I have done to myself and what might happen as a result of this serious surgery (no going back). I was so desperate I was to lose weight. I gotta tell you... the biggest problem was a selfish, unloving, critical, abusive husband and my own lack of self-esteem. I was glad to get rid of all 180 pounds of HIM! Now that was the best and healthiest weight loss of all. I wish I had gotten rid of him first, because after he was gone, I started working out, lifting weights and got in shape. That was a game changer. I would encourage everyone to do their own research. Look up the rate of weight regain after the sleeve. Look up the risk of GERD associated with the sleeve. Look up the rate of hunger after surgery. Weigh the pros and cons. This is not a benign surgery. At least that is how I feel about it today
