  1. Ive had wine, margaritas & even a few beers although they do give a little heart burn. I get buzzed pretty fast. Also, it tends to make me very sleepy.
  2. I know this is like a no go on Fast food but I wanted to ask anyways when it comes to pizzas are the gluten free ones okay to eat. My stomach is like hell no to breads and other doughy things but I know like thin crust the gluten free is also thin. Has anyone tired it and how has it felt on your stomach?

    Can I really do this?

Hi all, I, too, had all the same fears prior to surgery starting about a week or two before and up until they came to wheel me back to the OR. I had my band on June 30th and I don't regret it one minute. I even started crying before I went back because of all the fears I had built up during those two weeks pre-op. When I woke up, I didn't remember a thing. I didn't experience any real pain until the second day, but not until the evening. It was mostly due to gas pain and only lasted a few days. The only discomfort I get is an occassional tugging feeling if I try to sit up too fast due to use of those abdominal muscles or if the seat belt in the car rubs against my incisions. For that, I have been using a small pillow to place under the belt for padding. All the things you are feeling are normal, but they will pass. Good luck to all of you. Sincerely, Stephanie

Is this my sweet spot? Help

Hi I am not sure when you were banded. I have had 4 fills so far, not sure how much is in their. My Dr does not like you to eat much the day of the fill, just liquids if possible. I have noticed that sometimes I feel more restriction a day or so later. With my first few fill after a few days things went down easer. At this point I may be just about at the right spot. I was banded in May, my last fill was in Sept. when ever I think about getting another fill, I eat someting too fast and it just does not go down. I end up with it comming back up. A few weeks ago it was almost once a day. but today was the first time in a week or so. I must eat really slowly. I eat alot of tosted sandwiches as I can take smaller bites. Just take it slow and see what happens
  5. I am new to the site, so hello to all. I went to see the program coordinator this past Wednesday. It went well and lasted about an hour. The nurse told me I had to do all these tests and blood work before I could have the surgery. Amazingly, I got all blood work and tests done the very same day. Luckily I hadn't eaten that morning b/c one of the test had to be fasting. The dietitian was also free for that same day, so that was great. I go see my primary care doctor this coming Monday to get checked out and get her to sign something saying I can have surgery. I go see the weight loss doctor Jan. 25. so I think I will be able to have the surgery early Feb. (I hope). How soon after you first see your doctor does he/she schedule surgery? A week or two?

    Sucking at success.....

I just have been banded on January 6, 2009. I really had a protein meat preop diet, and my post op was liquids for a week. I lost 8lbs. But since I have been on solids, I have been up to my old tricks again and I feel ashamed! I am exuding NO will power and still snacking on garbage, sweets and fast foods! I hate myself right now. I wont get a fill until feb. 16th and i have gained back 4 of the 8 pounds i lost on my liquid diet! I feel like a total loser, (and not in a good way). Help me, someone, Im drowning!
  7. I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement to all of you. I've had my Band since 12 Nov 09. I have lost a total of 54 1/2 lbs including (mandatory diet and Pre-op). I have lost on average about 4-5 lbs a month. So, for the most part, I am textbook with the weight-loss. So, though the loss was not fast, it is still coming off and, I am very encouraged. Well, I took my measurements back on 7 Dec 09. I'd completely forgotten about that. I hadn't really checked since then--other than measuring my waist periodically. Shockingly, this is the results: 7 Dec 09 10 July 10 Bust 7 Dec: 47------------ 10 Jul:39 Waist 7 Dec: 48----------- 10 Jul: 35 Hips 7 Dec: 47------------ 10 Jul: 40 Neck 7 Dec:14 1/2--------- 10 Jul: 12 Thigh 26 22 Arms lost 2 inches I know that this is long. But, hopefully it will motivate and encourage someone. Also, I have started jogging. Which has really helped too. Thanks, Brigette
  8. No thats what happend to me and found out i needed a adjusment i was able to swallow to fast eat n between and after a cup i could go for another bite. He amp me up to 6cc i dont know if il go past that unless i get to a stand still and still be hungry with less restrictions IM MY OWN MOTIVATION

3rd week and no loss at all!

Boy, I sure had the SAME question after I was first banded. I lost 17 pounds the first week, then things came to a screeching halt. If you read more posts, you'll find that until you get a fill (or two, or three.....), the weight might not come off very fast, if at all. In my case, I've had one fill and still not feeling restriction. I'm going for #2 soon and hopefully that will help. So what everyone says is true.....just concentrate on eating proper foods and healing the first few weeks and don't worry about losing weight until you get some decent restriction. Believe me, you are NOT alone!!!
  10. Hi everyone. I was banded on 2/23 and am down a total of 30 lbs. I have had 3 fills and am scheduled for my next appointment on 6/5 but am not sure if I need one. I get full pretty fast. I admit I am still not making the best food choices, but I can not eat any where remotely clost to 1500 or 1800 calories a day. I also struggle with getting the 70 grams of Protein per day. But am trying. Having some hair loss, but taking Vitamins. I need to start exercising. I have increased my activity by doing more and just getting out in the world and housework, but I know that is not enough. So I need to start that. I find the weight loss to be ok - but not steady at all. I can go for weeks without losing a pound. I got discouraged yesterday when my mother asked me why the "band" was not working for me. I mean I am down 30 pounds. Went in at 257 and am now at 227. from size 22 to size 18 - I guess she thought it would be faster as well. I know I need to exercise and really make better food choices, but sometimes I can't help it.. Good luck to everyone and we all need to keep in touch and keep seeing how we are doing... Let me know if you think i am losing at a good rate?

How are the february 09 bandsters doing?

I was banded Feb. 10, 09. I've had 4 fills and am now at 5.6ccs. If I'm not at my sweet spot, I'm very close! I have another fill scheduled for June 15, but I'm not certain I need it. Will wait until then to see. Realistically, starting with my pre-op diet through now, I've lost 59 pounds. We'd all like to lose FAST but that's pretty darned fast if you think about it. And I know if I'd been dieting on my own, I would have long since falled off the wagon and gained it all back, LOL. I'll admit that I don't journal, I walk as often as I can and if I did those things I'd probably lose a bit faster but I'm happy with how I'm doing...very happy!
  12. So, anyone have suggestions or tips for full liquid diet that is not sweet, but still has lots of protein? I can tell that I'm going to sick of sweet shakes pretty fast. At least I see a positive in that, I won't want anything sweet!
  13. What causes issues is confusing and aggravating at times. I ate my first steak the other day no problems, but when I ate half a sandwich, I came right back up. I guess the steak doesnt gum up like the bread when chewed. I normally dont PB (productive burps), rarely if ever. And I have only thrown up 3 times. I am really not that tight, but on the rare occasion sometimes I have even be careful how fast I drink Water.

    Is This Right?

You've lost 14 pounds in six days? That's phenomenal! I realize that part of that was the fluids from surgery, but WOW!!! Sip, sip, sip, walk, walk, walk. Your body is healing. You'll hit a true stall for a few days around the third week, then you will be amazed at how fast the weight will drop off you. Don't let the scale run your life, but enjoy the ride!
  15. Well, as soon as you start eating, things start moving through the band... slowly. If you take a bite that is too big or isn't chewed well enough (or even sometimes when you eat too fast), the food *can't* get past the band, which causes discomfort. If things are moving like they are supposed to, you aren't stuck..

    Exercise Routines

I think walking is a great way to start. Typically, it is recommended that people aim to get their heart rate up for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. Work up to it if you need to. You want to walk at a pace that is like you are late for a meeting. It should make you breathe through your mouth. Again, work up to that if you've not been exercising at all. Eventually, you will have to pick up the pace to have the same workout. At some point you can start to add in 2-3 weight lifting sessions, and some stretching. It is important to pick/find something that you can find enjoyment in-- that's what helps people stick to a routine. Some people like group exercise, some people like to be alone. Try something new if you want. One thing that will really help your body (and keep you from getting really bored) is to switch things up from time to time. I often recommend to people (I work at the YMCA) to use several different machines at several different speeds during the same workout. Instead of spending 30 min at one speed on the treadmill, do 5 min on the bike at a slow speed, 10 min on the treadmill at medium, 5 min on the elliptical at a high speed, then 5 min slow on the bike again... or whatever. mixing it up is great for your body. And "fast" or "slow" is relative for everyone. Do you have any "special" needs-- like painful joints, etc? That would also affect what exercise routine you choose.

    Trying to decide

This is true. That’s why therapy & understanding why you eat is a vital component of this process for many people. In the US a psychological assessment is part of the insurance approval process. In Australia, your surgeon recommends pre &/or post surgery therapy sessions. The surgery affords many benefits that dieting &/or exercising alone does. It resets your body set point (the weight your body naturally gravitates to), boosts your metabolism, removes part of the area that produces the hunger hormone (ghrelin) & can affect the glp1 hormone that regulates hunger & the metabolism of glucose. There are also of course physical changes that restricts how much food you can eat. You will have to change how & what you eat. (Many change when they eat too.) The surgery affords you the time to establish new habits, discover new foods & to work out what way of eating works best for you. I’ve tried many diets & I’m pig headed enough to stick to them for months without wavering but I’d always eventually go back to how & what I usually ate. I’ve never been able to maintain my weight like I can now. I made a decision to cut out a lot of sugar (real, artificial, substitutes) out of my diet. I don’t eat highly processed foods, avoid a lot of carbs & never have fast food. This has been what works for me. It may not work for you or complement your lifestyle. I didn’t record my food intake & still don’t. I do random checks of my calories & regularly check nutrients & ingredients. The only thing I watch carefully is my protein. Some people find tracking very helpful but it isn’t for everyone all the time. Though you may be required to do it for a while to ensure you’re getting in the nutrients you need. But you have to be ready to do this. As I said it’s not easy. It was harder than any other diet I’ve done.

    Post Op!

So my surgery was changed to the 19th which was Thursday so that way I would be the only person on the schedule that day and the only one in recovery. Everything went great I was in at 6:30 and on the table by 7- surgery was over by 8. I woke up quickly and was just a little dizzy from the anesthesia but that's normal, they said I woke up very fast and they were surprised at how well I did. Drank some water and then was home by 10. I felt great! Went for a couple of walks and even went shopping, I was in no pain at all. Fast forward to the next day, I was sore like I had worked out probably because of the way I was laying on the table, my neck was sore and I had gas pains. The soreness was nothing, it was just achy feeling but the gas pains have by far been the worst out of all of this and the pain medicine doesn't touch it. So I have just been dealing with that, all I can say is walk, walk, walk, I am now on day 4 and my left shoulder is still hurting tremendously, but other than that I feel great. I never expected to feel so awesome. I have lost 16 pounds already counting pre-op and I feel super. I have been getting my fluids in and walking and couldn't be happier that I made this choice. My scars are teeny tiny and I'm sure will fade in no time. I haven't felt hungry even though there is no fluid in my band and that is one of the most unexpected feelings. I know that once the swelling goes down I will probably be in bandster hell but for now I am smooth sailing. I will probably be getting a fill at my 4 week appt. So for anyone out there reading this that has doubts just know that you can do it! I will say that having a support system is crucial. Without friends and family I would be lost. They support me and cheer me on and encourage me, and help me remember that this is just the beginning. Keep on Keeping on!

    My first fill went great!

I have my first fill tomorrow and I'm anxious about it, especially because I still have intermittent soreness and tenderness around the port area. I'm glad your experience was good.... gives me hope! Thanks for posting.

    Post op hunger

What do you all mean by "no restriction"? How much can you eat in a half hour period? For comparison purposes I (sleeved 10/3) can eat 4 oz of yogurt or roughly 3 ounces of cottage cheese, refried beans, smooth tuna salad, or custard. It takes me 20-30 minutes to get through that much. If I eat more than that much, or I go too fast, I don't get the "full" signal you hear people talk about on here (sore shoulder, etc.), but I definitely feel pretty crappy and kind of sick.

    2 weeks post op

Congratulations! You are doing great. I am 7 months out and can't believe how fast time has flown!
  24. I was sleeved just a week ago. Last night I was eating a pudding, and probably a little too fast..LOL. Well I took a big bite and felt like it literally stretched my sleeve a bit. Like I could feel it, kind of a stretchy pain. Now all day today I have a weird pain if I eat or drink anything. It's near my belly button. It's more of a sore overworked muscle feeling than like a sharp pain. Knowing me I probably damaged something!!!
  25. I was thinking about this last night. I was almost a 100% carb and sugar eater pre-sleeve. Pasta with butter and cheese was my staple. I drank A LOT of wine...every night. I ate sugar and Desserts whenever I wanted to. I drank regular soda. I ate pizza, thai food, pasta, fried everything, tons of bread and I was a fast food queen. Horrible way to live!! My body is still saying WTH after 5 weeks. It doesn't know what being healthy feels like yet! But I'm down 33 pounds and I'm getting better everyday!
