Welcome! I’m glad you found us. This forum is extremely helpful. Feel free to ask any questions that come up. It’s great that you have your mom as a resource, too! Duodenal switch is not nearly as common as RNY or VSG. I don’t think very many bariatric surgeons do duodenal switch, so if you are seriously considering that, it may be harder to find a surgeon who offers it. It’s too bad that your insurance won’t pay for it, but the good news is that you should be able to get the surgery more quickly since you won’t have to jump through as many hoops. You might want to look into practices that specialize in fast-track bariatric surgery for self-pay patients (such as Blossom Bariatrics and Mexico Bariatric Center). I can’t vouch for any of those, but there are people on this forum who have used them.

12 days post RNY I feel fine, no pain, no discomfort I can drink water easily, 2-4 regular sips in a row. I can eat 1/2 cup or 4 oz of food in one meal without any discomfort. I think I could actually eat more, but I don't plate more food. I finish what I plate though. Ex: 1/2 cup of blended chili with 1 oz ff greek yogurt, 2oz grilled cod with 2 oz cottage cheese and slice of grilled tomato, 1 egg mashed and 2oz of mashed cauliflower, etc. These seem like big meals. They are all in my NUT's sample menu but at the upper limit of allowed portions. I called NUT and she just said to chew slowly and stop after 30 min. I do chew slow and still finish within 30 min. The thing is I do not feel full or satisfied. I also don't feel hungry. I sort of feel nothing at all. I find this very weird and frustrating. Overall I get about 80 g of protein and 500-650 calories. I'm down 10 lbs in 12 days and I feel that its low. Not sure what to do or how to proceed. I feel that without feeling full or satisfied I'll get off track really fast. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using Tapatalk

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.
BriarRose replied to Ann Parde's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I am 10 years out from a sleeve. Sleeved at about 300 lbs. Started at 320. 5'3" and I was 54 years old. I lost total of 150 pounds to 170. Then life happened. Lost my mom, then my younger brother then my dad.... and divorced and single parenting and moving and working and well.... I gained back to 220. About a year and a half ago I decided I needed to make changes. Small ones. and little by little I got control back. I didn't do a major diet, I didn't do a fast or liquids only. I just started eliminating one lousy food and then another... and replacing one bad habit with a good and positive one. No cheap chocolate. Only good expensive chocolate. And one or two pieces is enough when it is really good chocolate. No potato chips. Air pop popcorn. Salads. Fruit. Veggies. Protein. More water. I have never been a soda drinker so that was not it for me. Just rebuilding good habits. I lost 45 pounds in 14 months. Not fast. But steady. And I took breaks to see what it would take to maintain that weight. Since September when I got back to 175 I have lost another 2 pounds. I will be 65 in two months. I know I will never be THIN. I don't need to be. But I am stronger, healthier, happier and maintaining my weight at a level that I can for the rest of my lifetime. Eating well. Moving more. You can do this. Figure out what will work for you. Then do it. -
Five days until my Full tummy tuck, Breast lift w Augmentation! I am so excited but getting pretty nervous now that it’s fast approaching. COVId test is on Monday! Did anyone second guess the CCs they chose? I find myself saying: Are they going to be too big? If I go down on CC will I wish I had stuck w the original CC I chose. Think it’s just nerves. I know I chose right for myself. 💛Glad I have my PS buddies @chubrub and @kristieshannon and past PS peeps to look to for helpful hints and support!💛

I'm a professor and my job is virtual now. I did my surgery right before winter break. I had no complications from surgery and an easy recovery. However, I'm glad I had a long break from work. In the first couple weeks of recovery I definitely had a brain fog. I felt fine physically but my brain didn't feel like it was as fast as usual. I think lecturing would have been difficult and if a student asked me a tough question I probably would have flubbed it. I say do it in the summer. Teaching requires so much of your mental focus that even if you physically recover, it's tough if your brain isn't ready yet. Another thing is you will have to eat very small amounts throughout the day and in the first few weeks you might be slowly sipping water or a protein shake for hours. This is tough to do when teaching.

Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
GradyCat replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I just found this link to multiple articles that are very rich with content really explaining Intermittent Fasting, how to do it, the different methods, benefits, etc. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/what-is-intermittent-fasting#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4 -
So as the new year hits, again weight loss is on the list of resolutions. I am taking a more serious look at surgeries, especially the sleeve. Currently 33 years old, weighing in about 250 lbs, BMI hovering around 35 at the moment. Been heavy for most of my adolescent and adult life. My heaviest was 280 and I decided to get serious in the spring of 2013, lost 95 lbs over the course of 2 years and change using weight watchers and biking. Fast forward 5+ years from then, and I've gained back a big chunk. Since then, I've taken a promotion which means less physical demand, more office work, driving around for field inspections, and losing my bicycle commute to work. Add to that a wife, 1-year-old and another on the way, and it's not a great recipe for weight loss. I have a family history of heart disease and personally have controlled hypertension on a small dose of a calcium channel blocker. My cholesterol was borderline but did improve following a recent low-carb diet. Managed to lose 12 lbs in a month doing low-carb and Intermittent Fasting, but then got quarantined for a Covid exposure at work (luckily negative), plus stresses of home life and that loss is pretty much gone. My oldest brother had successful sleeve surgery around 2 years ago after years of being way bigger. I'm considering it, but the wife isn't quite on board yet. She still thinks that I could do it on my own, but I'm not confident in achieving and maintaining that previous weight loss just based on life circumstances. Baby #2 is due in July. I think this next 6 months is the time to make one last diet effort at major loss before taking a serious look at surgery and getting the wife to go along with it. I want to be here for my family and I'll gladly give up pizza and beer for them.

Anyone for October 2020?
Koko.G replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pretty similar as well. I try to have a protein shake 1st thing in the morning that was I start of with 25-30g of protein because it's easy to miss the goal. Some days I feel like I'm able to eat a lil more and on others I feel full really fast. My issue is that when I eat the food hurts going down. Not always, but more often then not. Even fluid hurts sometimes, feels like I'm swallowing a golf ball. My surgeon says that'll go away with time but idk. -
I am the same way and it is real hunger. I keep a small snack for this. I'm not sure how you are eating during the day but it could be that you aren't get a lot of calories during the day, your stomach gets a rest for most of the evening (5 or 6 hours?) and is able to take a little something more. I have some questions on where it comes from as I started a new job last month just before Thanksgiving. I work from 4 pm until around 12-1 am but don't eat at all during my shift (I drink tons of water mixed with my genepro protein for energy though all shift long). My work is at a factory and I'm doing fast, physical work with heavy lifting. I then pick up my son after work (our family works at the same place but different buildings) and I have to wait for him. By the time I get home, I'm really ravenous but can't eat many things still. I have some mild slim jims put aside and will eat a couple of the small snack size. I can't drink anymore and still getting used to the schedule. I have to go back and pick up my husband at 4 am (he works 12 hour shifts) so I don't sleep so much but I'm not hungry again until the next afternoon after sleeping all morning until around 3 pm with my husband. Until I read your post, I thought that was the reason for the hunger but it can be just the time our stomachs can handle it after not eating for so many hours.

3 months still having difficulties
Sandra Nuelken replied to Yourbestfriend's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
3 months out I was still on the last week of my post-surgery diet. Like with a baby you add new food slowly. The chicken should be shredded and I bought toddler stainless silverware to eat with. I don't eat at a table with friends as I tend to eat too fast and chew too little. I often have my computer or book to slow down eating. Dense meats are the hardest, I eat a lot of chicken and salmon. If the meat is dry I add cold-pressed olive oil with Italian seasonings or with salmon the lemon pepper seasonings. My meals are very boring as I don't want food to become exciting and entertaining. It is just nutrition. Start slow and don't think that 3 months out you need to eat everything just keep your protein first. Veggies I might eat a spoonful every once in a while. Good luck. -
10 months post op issues
catwoman7 replied to Debs6688's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
it's common for liver enzymes to skyrocket during the rapid weight loss phase. Fast weight loss is really hard on livers. They should normalize once the weight loss slows way down. Mine were really high when I was around eight months out - but they rechecked them once I hit maintenance a few months later, and they were fine. -
Needing motivation & suggestions!
Mr Alley Gator replied to ZGal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not a big Deal - I had to push hard to get the last few - However I am a male so may not work for you. I bounced my calories around big time one day 500 or less then bump up then down. Then I did a fasting program and that worked well -

It is official! Yowza! My surgery has been scheduled for February 22, 2021! After months and months of checking off all the boxes in what felt like slow motion, it now seems like someone finally pressed the fast forward button! I am jumping for joy while pushing the panic button at the same time! ACK! I am in search of book recommendations, items you found invaluable after surgery and any other advice you are willing to share! -

Many thanks for all the great ideas. At least I know it’s not just me. At first I thought the surgeon had made the sleeve too small! Now I know it’s just me eating too fast. -
Break from active weight loss?
Arabesque replied to a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on your weight loss so far. Whoo hoo! There are many reasons why you didn’t put on weight during your sabbatical but the main one that temporarily occurs as a result of our surgery is a faster metabolism. Mine is still going pretty dang fast but I don’t know how long it will last but it will slow again. The down side is that it lulls you into a false sense of security - that you can eat more & not gain. I can understand why you upped your intake after your surgery & in a way you were likely consuming enough to maintain. These last few pounds are likely to be the hardest to lose because you’re so close to your goal but you can do it. Focus back on your protein & fluid goals & portion control. I agree with Betty1971. Don’t think as this as a diet but just how you eat now: highly nutritious, healthy food. Good luck. -

Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
Lanie Hardy replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, Merry Christmas!! I was getting on today to ask that same question!! I’ve survived, stayed on plan and can’t get to my January 8th appointment fast enough. I miss veggies! I have been able to eat a little bit of salsa and hot sauce with beans and eggs, but yesterday I had some Pico de Gallo and when they say your veggies need to be cooked they mean it! I think I had a thumbtack size of tomato and tiny piece of onion...almost threw up. I didn’t mean to eat either, I was sharing a few bites of chipotle chicken and beans from my husbands dinner, I saw it peaking out as I lifted my spoon but it didn’t register fast enough. 😂 how have all of you sweet friends done? I hope we’ll and that you are healthy and safe! -
By day 60 post op, I had lost 54 pounds, which includes 15 pounds lost on the pre op diet. BUT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT! It doesn't matter if you lose fast or slow. You cannot control that as long as you are following your plan. I lost fast, but had terrible body dysmorphia from the rapid change. I think losing slower has advantages in that area. But we really don't have a choice in how we lose - just the choice to stick with the plan. Hang in there! Don't get caught up in comparing your numbers with everyone else. It is interesting, but the journey is unique for each person.

GradyCat replied to Tannedhaggis2's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just take it slowly. Tiny, tiny little bites of soft food. Take it slow and don't rush the solid foods. You'll get something called "the foamies" from time to time which is throwing up mucus and a stuck feeling if you eat something your stomach isn't ready for or if you eat too much or too fast. Your body will tell you what it wants and doesn't want. Keep drinking those protein shakes to get your protein in if you need to -
Maybe you won't have a stall. Not everyone does. I just reviewed my weight record and I only had one week where my weight stayed the same. That was at the 5 month mark. My losses weren't huge every week but were losses. I reached my original goal in 9 months and my personal goal in 11 months so not fast but I got there slow and steady! I'm actually maintaining below my goal now and I still follow the guidelines I was given as far as getting enough protein and drinking enough water. I still track my food to make sure I'm doing the right thing! Statistics say year 3 is the time when most people start having regain and I'm determined to not let that happen because I just paid a a pretty good price for plastic surgery and plan to have more this year! I'm a couple of months into year 3 and so far so good!
-
Just try to get it together. I believe once you start stalling you'll be happy with yourself. You still have some more to lose so hang on to your brain and emotions and be ready to face the stalls. A lot of people lose fast be happy and put your mind on other things.

Hi all. Hope you all had a great Christmas. I'm aware that this thread might come across in the wrong way given some people's experiences/troubles. I truly don't mean it to, I suffer from anxiety bouts & think the holiday season has triggered one. I was worried initially I was 'losing too fast but this forum reassured me that all was normal & to chill. (Not much support in UK for private aka self funding patients) I had surgery on the 19th October & have lost 0.8 lbs a day since (averaged out). I haven't had a stall like most people describe, 2-3 days max but pre menstruation. I know everyone & every body is different, my surgeon was surprised when I told him & said to expect a very very long stall, he guessed imminently. That was just over 2 weeks ago. I've been on edge waiting for it since! Is there anything I can do to prepare. I'm expecting the worst now & the numbers going down on the scale are starting to make me anxious not happy. I had 2 days off plan for Christmas, food choices not awful, but not good! Scales today show another 4 pounds off. Am I just going to stop losing 1 day soon & have to wait months for it to restart? I had 118 pounds to shift & have lost 60. Sorry for the essay!

Hello rmm345, How did the surgery go? I am like you, low BMI, in my 20s and getting surgery in January 2021. I'm also a bit concerned about the loose skin.. Did you loose weight fast? Slow? How did it go? Sent from my SM-G986B using BariatricPal mobile app

Yes/No. I have experienced discomfort while swallowing food on occasion. It's usually a sign that I have taken too big of a bite/didn't chew well enough/am eating too fast. However, it's a sort of pressure discomfort. I wouldn't call it a "cramp."

Severe allergic reation
Lilfootie replied to LoreCar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I had a few post surgery!!! Benadryl did not work for me either. Xyzal helped mine. Take it on time and religiously (never skip!). I read somewhere after feeling so defeated that newer antihistamines may work when Benadryl doesn’t, they just don’t work as fast. You might have to wait the full 48 hrs to see results. I was allergic to the Narcotic I was given and then had a massive reaction to the Lovonox injections. I still have about 20 scars the size of eggs from where I injected. But they stopped spreading about 2 days after starting Xyzal and stopped itching completely after about a week. I had been taking Benadryl for two weeks with no luck and everything getting worse. Hope you find something that works! Meds can have delayed reactions so definitely do your research.
