Hi- I had surgery on 5/15/24... so I'm 5 weeks out. I struggled getting water in this weekend and ended up needing fluids. My mouth has been killing me and I thought fluids would help but nope! Now I'm struggling with get in protein because the only way I like protein is with hot coffee. I just feel like I'm failing! Support/suggestions... I'm all ears!

Phase 3 Gastric Sleeve
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Lulu60's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 2 weeks, I was on things like avocado spread, cottage cheese, hummus, refried beans, softly scrambled eggs. I was also drinking ready made protein shakes because they count as fluids and protein. I also was drinking protein gatorade zero. I would just be careful with what you're eating and how much, because at 2 weeks out you're still healing. -
IM HUNGRY!!!!!!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Dchonlee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, me. I never lost my hunger at all. I've just had to learn that if I follow my plan, I'm getting enough food. I ignore it by staying busy, working a lot, and keeping busy so I'm not focused on it. I make sure to have 3 meals and 3 snacks per day and prioritize protein, then healthy fats, then fiber, then carbs. -
What do you wish you had done BEFORE your gastric bypass surgery to get ready?
ShoppGirl replied to DianeF's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks. I am actually looking at my book now and it lists regular caffeinated or decaf beverages on the clear liquid diet which is days one and two post op. I knew I was offered coffee in the hospital for my sleeve but wasn’t sure if it was decaf or regular because I don’t drink it unless its loaded with other stuff. I was allowed when I asked pretty early out to have caffeinated protein shakes but didn’t remember exactly when that was. I know that a lot of doctors disagree on this toplc but apparently I am allowed to have it from day one. Ironically it is NOT listed as a drink option on the liver shrink diet. Not sure why but I have an appointment with him today so I will be asking. I am totally weaned and didn’t have any this morning but I am dragging a bit. No headaches though knock on wood. I know that it’s always tough for me for any procedure to go without it even for the nothing after midnight that’s always required. If the procedure goes too late I wake up with a headache begging to drink the caffeine that I bring with me so I guess it’s better to just stay off of it or keep it to like one a day anyways at this point. -
I live in the US but here my doctor actually sends the list of what he wants to my PCP asking them to order the labs. If I was you I would run that question by your doctor and explain your reasoning for it. Maybe there is a third option Ike both of them sending their requests to the lab at the same time and the lab eliminating the duplicate tests if they draw blood for both orders on the same day??

Am fine with monkfruit. Same with chocolate flavour protein. Was thinking of brownies with protein powder added maybe instead of cacao

TORe Procedure
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to WarrenInEC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Did you ever have your procedure? If so, how did it go? I never knew there was a revision for the bypass. I had a revision from the sleeve to the bypass, so it's nice to know if I ever need another revision down the line, there's an option. -
I don't know all the brands you have in the US but I have used BFree gluten free high protein wraps. Each wrap is only 3.5g carbs and 11g protein but you'll only manage small portions of each wrap so the carbs from the wrap itself will be negligible.

Premier or fairlife??
Mandapanda@ replied to Mandapanda@'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m speaking of protein shakes of course -
I don't know how other programs do it, but my 6 months of supervised diet was basically just a logbook of what I was eating, when, how much. My team didn't have me on any restrictions until 2 weeks before the scheduled surgery. They certainly followed up with me consistently, but it was more to suggest how I could adjust my food after the surgery -- ie, "I see you had 2 cups oatmeal for breakfast! After the surgery, you'll probably start at half a cup and go from there, you'll want to make it with either a higher protein milk like fairlife or even a protein shake, you'll want to use thicker oats rather than instant or minute-oats," etc I did lose about 20 lbs total pre-op -- just because having to measure my food made me more aware of how much I was eating. I don't want this to come off the wrong way, but I don't think losing too much weight before the surgery will be an issue for you -- or for most people approaching it as an option. If your BMI is high enough to qualify you starting the program, it's highly unlikely you'll be able to lose enough on your own to drop your BMI to a point that it would disqualify you. (I'm not saying it's impossible! But most people turn to WLS as a last resort after so many other methods have failed -- if we could successfully lose a big chunk of weight by ourselves just by being on a supervised diet, we would have done it without turning to WLS.)

PostOp week 2…craving coffee
AmberFL replied to DinoMama3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I have a work around! You will need: 1. vanilla protein shake 2. sugar free pumpkin spice syrup (Jordans skinny syrup as a yummy one) 3. sugar free pumpkin spice sauce (Jordans skinny syrup as a yummy one) 4. pumpkins pie spice Recipe: 1 vanilla pre-made protein shake (such as premier or fairlife) 10 pumps of sugar free pumpkin spice syrup mix them in a jar together and you can use it as a creamer. Then I take a pre-made protein shake (about 1-2 oz) and use my frothier to make the foam THEN I assemble. 2oz on the bottom of the glass jar, ice to top it off, sugar free pumpin spice sauce, add decaf cold brew, then add your foam and sprinkle some of your pumpkin pie spice. ITS DELICIOUS! I drink one almost every day and its 36cal! -

Oh yeah -- good thing I only made the one serving of the 'soup' that way lol - I'll stick to just carrots for the next batch! Thanks for the tip! I took a look and my nutritionist didn't exclude the Collagen from my protein count - and the one I got is very detailed on the packaging that the protein comes from like, egg shell, egg white, and a couple types of fish. I'm just winging it on my protein until my Genepro gets here tomorrow, mainly. I'm sure that will help a LOT toward my goals. Also @RRenaeL23 - A mile and a half?? You are rocking it! Also, seeing as how you mentioned the VA - thank you for your service! -
June 2024 Surgery Buddies
Anonymous1972 replied to Bec K's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on the 19th of June and I'm having the same issue. I have been following the full liquid diet religiously but doesn't seem like enough. I go to my first follow up this Wednesday, the 26th, and I definitely will be asking the doctor what are my options. I do feel I'm ready to advance to soft foods but I'll wait to see what the doctor says. -
17 month post GS and 9lbs gain
Arabesque replied to fifi0523's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Best advice is to go back to how & what you were eating when you reached your stabilised weight. This was likely the calories and nutritions you needed at that weight. However a bounce back regain isn’t that uncommon. It’s like your body hits a low point but it was actually too low & then you gain a little & your body bobs up to get to what is actually your new set point & where your body is happiest. Check to see if you’ve let a few things slip like with your food or drink choices or or you’ve not been as vigilant about portion sizes, calories, activity, etc. It’s easy to get a bit over confident or complacent with our choices & behaviours. And life sometimes gets in the way of our best intentions. Unfortunately too, many medications, like those you may be on for your depression, can contribute to weight gain. Worth a conversation with your prescribing doctor to see if there are alternatives & also your surgeon to discuss your options to manage it. -
Does anyone know of any in-person support groups around Lexington, Kentucky that you do not have to have the procedure done at the hospital offering it? My clinic has Facebook groups but nothing in-person that I've seen. I don't really do Facebook, so that option doesn't feel like it's going to work well for me. I am definitely at least going to lurk on the forums here, but I personally feel the commitment of showing up to something in-person is going to help me out a lot (even if my anxiety hates the idea). But all my Google searching has found are support groups that you have to be a patient of THAT hospital to go to.

Walking outside is not a very good option right now as the temperatures are over 35-45 degrees (middle east tings) but "winter" is around the corner so I'll be happy to do outside walks then! Tbh I am not idle during the day but like I can do more for sure. I try to not ask for help (nanny or son) and just should it myself to get in some extra steps.. but I really wanna push myself to do the treadmill 3x a week. I love how u sleep in ur workout clothes hahaha! It will work for me to workout in the mornings before I start work on the 16th then it will have to be after work. I totally know what u mean about being more energetic after workouts. It does make u feel great! I will do it! -

Omg this foods cooking smells so good. I’ve been lucky since surgery that it’s just my hubby and I and he is not a big eater and usually makes whatever he wants on the grill. I had a protein shake for breakfast but my mouth is watering. Idk if I’m gonna be able to control myself today. I mean portion wise I will but I’ve gotta taste a little bit of it all. -
@AmberFL In all your exercising have you found that your arms are firming up, if they were flabby before? Just looking for some tips as they remain a problem area for me and doing arm weights at home (mix between 1.5kg and 3kg) a few days a week for some reps doesn't seem to be making any inroads. My legs are always going to be a problem area for me because of lymphedema but that just stops me wearing shorts or a short dress leaving me still with plenty of options but having to keep my arms covered all the time (because I hate my arms) is a pain.

Hi! Sorry to drop in the conversation but I heard Owin protein shakes are pretty good. Maybe try one of those. -
Wearing them now 😁. Fitted tops of course. Wear them around the house in winter with sweaters and cardigans. I secretly love (not so secret now!) seeing my skinny legs reflected in my glass doors. Like you, @SleeveToBypass2023, it took a while to accept the skinny, non thigh rubbing kegs were mine, but now it’s good motivation to stay on track. Have a wonderful mini break in London @MrsFitz. Just think next time you visit, you may not need your scooter & you’ll have many more. wardrobe options. Yay!

NEW GLP-1 Program at BariatricPal!
Alex Brecher replied to Alex Brecher's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Yes, it’s definitely an option. Please consult with your medical provider to explore options that best fit your needs. Regarding experiences, my younger brother began this program recently and has seen significant weight loss after a gradual increase in dosage over two months. If you’re feeling nervous about administering your first dose, it might help to have a healthcare professional guide you through the process or to watch instructional videos provided by healthcare providers. -
I am in USA and started my pre op diet today. Surgery date is 7/17. I have a pre op diet of up to 800 Calories. Most is consisting of protein shakes, protein water, bouillions, an occasional very low fat, low sugar yougurt. (High protein so Greek). I was wondering why someone had a 300 calorie a day post op diet. Wouldn't you not have enough protein? Saffy1, what is on your diet?

Reactive Hypoglycaemia
ShoppGirl replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea. Just start with the times that you naturally do actually eat anyways and then pick other times that are convenient from there. I also do a proffee in the morning (just protein shake and coffee to make an iced coffee like drink). I really am not a breakfast person but I have to do vitamins 5 different times a day so I do that with my soluble fiber mixed in and take my multivitamin once I get that down. It’s fast and it’s liquid too so it’s a good start to the day getting fiber, protein, fluids and my first vitamin done. I like the premiere protein caramel and I just mix it with some chilled coffee. I use the whole shake in a tall cup and add coffee the rest of the way but I am one of those people that are asked if I want some coffee with my cream and sugar so adjust as needed. But for sure, start with the snacks. They are a must if you have reactive hypoglycemia. Then add alarms to remember to eat those snacks. Maybe around 1 if you haven’t eaten yet you need to get something soon or have one of your snacks to avoid the 2-3pm issue. Hopefully that will help. -
I put blueberries and natural PB on a rice cake OMG! But for a "healthier" less calorie PB. Try mixing 1 bottle of vanilla Fairlife protein shake and 8oz container of PB2 (powder PD) mix together OMG! 72ish calories for 2 tbls and 9g protein!

Finally on the other side!
Spinoza replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So glad to hear you're out the other end of the surgery OP. My advice is prioritise your fluid goals for the first week or two. Honestly vitamins and protein goal and almost everything else can be caught up on later if you can't make them right now.
