Sugar Alcohols and Dumping Syndrome
omrhsn replied to CarmenG's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Both Aspartame and Sorbitol give me diarrhea and dumping. So I stopped taking those "zero sugar" drinks that are sweetened with these two and use regular white sugar in very small quantities instead. If I feel like having coke, I will get the regular coke and share it with my wife / son. The diet / lite coke will give me nausea / stomachache on the spot. Have you tried Stevia? I used that when I was on Keto before WLS and didn't have any issues with it. -
In my own previous weight loss experience, I lost 100lbs over 18 monthts doing keto. 250 to 150, and I had virtually no loose skin. I only started working out at 15 months, and had already lost 75lbs so it wasn't because of working out. Slower weight loss may be frustrating, but in my experience it is better in the long run!

That isn’t going to be easy on your new stomach at all. I’d recommend you invest in an air fryer, it will help curb the fried food cravings. Especially if you find a nice almond flour/keto breading recipe.

HELP! FELL OFF THE WAGON
Spinoza replied to trishaaustin2001's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ah - sorry - forgot what I actually started out to say. Arabesque is right (as she usually is). If you can go back to your original programme do. Protein first, veg second, carbs third or not at all. No sugar, it's ridiculously addictive and produces insulin spikes that make you crave it more. Perhaps consider a keto week to get you started and minimise cravings - so protein and green leafy veg only? -
Anyone lost 1/2 the weight and then can't loose more?
Sherry S replied to Sherry S's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's very frustrating to be stuck and not loose weight. The Whole 30 plan is really good. There is a lot of support for the plan and you only do it for 30 days then see how you feel. Sugar is in everything and one of the worst things we can eat as are the bad carbs. There are so many good books out there on why protein is better for you from the original Atkins to , Eat Fat Get Thin, The Keto Reset Diet, Zero Sugar Diet then there is the Paleo diet and the combined Paleo keto. Other books Fat Chance, The Case Against Sugar, Why we get fat, Grain Brain and so many more tell us why sugar, white products and bad carbs effect our health. If reading and researching made me loose weight I'd be thin for the rest of my life. LOL I guess it's a trial and error for each person. I'm still stuck but I do know I feel better when I don't eat sugar. I wish there was an answer to getting past the stuck phase. Good Luck and I hope you get your sugar levels under control. -
I am doing keto and keeping my macros in line with what the calculator spit out for my stats. I find that it really helps in minimizing cravings for sugar and starches. I don't love cooking, but this week I made a spinach and ricotta bake that was very tasty! http://queenketo.com/low-carb-spinach-ricotta-bake/

AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
breakfast this morning on Day 1. Or should I say Brunch, cuz I just ate it. Turned out to be one of my Psylli Egg McBiscuits The biscuits are one of my creations and are totes legal for CAMAW! Warning this biscuit is a total gut bomb. You have to have ZERO swallowing issues and be fully hydrated BEFORE eating it! I used different ingredients for this one, but you can read the cooking instructions here on my old - now defunct blog. http://fluffychixcook.com/egg-fast-breakfast-biscuit-low-carb-keto-breakfast-yum/ -
Pre op diet question
NYCNomad replied to charismatic's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@charismatic I questioned this too. Especially because a 2 week diet isn’t required for everyone. From what I can tell, most doctors basically want a high protein low carb Keto diet. Keto shrinks your liver so why force liquid only version with artificial products when I can also achieve the result with real food? The only conclusion I came up with is that liquid only is a good blanket solution for everyone and has less a chance of people slipping up by eating too much, eating the wrong foods or having real food trigger a binge. With that in mind, I mixed in a small amount of real food (eggs, grilled chicken, cottage cheese) the 1st week and have been all liquid the 2nd week. -
I was just wondering who's bariatric (real food stage) instructions were to avoid fruits and beans? I get the people that choose atkins and keto avoid Fruit, beans, whole grains, corn, peas, lentils, peanuts, berries, squash, yams, potatoes, etc [I am wondering if people are having success when they avoid grains, sugar, and processed food, but eat a variety of whole natural foods, including berries, squash, fruit, nuts, and beans?] Four years out - My diet is mostly clean whole foods - proteins, veggies, fruits, nuts, sweet potato, lentils/beans, squash, nuts, dairy. I am not 100% clean. I balance all my foods to fit my calories and macros for the day.

Maybe best to get the strips to check. If you don’t mind my asking what are you eating that is putting you in ketosis? My first two weeks were free fluids and I found there’s not that many keto choices except the pre op shakes. I did have bad breath but it was from the protein drinks (though I had too many dairy products to be in ketosis).

I do low carb, not "keto". I make that distinction cuz I am old-school. I don't do a bunch of fancy gyrations and artificial stimulation to get my fat high. My keto comes by simply doing no more and no less than dropping my carb level to <50g per day. That gets the body into ketosis. But to be fair, most of us who are eating <800cals per day are probably already in ketosis by proxy of a VLCD (very low calorie diet). So we're already producing ketones for fuel--unless you're consuming a butt load of daily carbs in that 800 or less per day diet. It's can be a good and healthy diet. I do low fat; choose low fat proteins and reduced fat dairy, but my fat still falls in about the 40% range. Anyway, it works for me. But if you over-consume carby food, you WILL see a jump from glycogen stores refilling with water and it takes 2-5 days to re-empty them. That's anywhere from a 2-8lb weight gain overnight. It can be brutal psychologically. But I truly believe this is the way that will maximize my weight loss period. For me.

You can buy keto strips from amazon to test they you are in ketosis. Usually anything over 20 carbs A DAY will keep you from being in ketosis but with the strips you know for sure if you have wiggle room to up carbs or go lower. Unless you are exercising vigorously it’s usually 20 and under though. Hope this helps. Yo-Yo Girl from New York City

Hey guys!! I haven't logged in here in forever! I had surgery 4 years ago (surgiversary was on the 8th) . My highest was 280.4 , I dipped down to 193 and then got pregnant. I didn't gain much through out my pregnancy, i breastfed after, and lost all the weight and then some. i got to 184.4 i think . Then i don't know what happened. I got back up to 220.2. On may 23rd i started trying to lose weight, I went to a weight loss doc and got put on phentermine . It curbs my hunger for sure but i went from doing the 5 bite diet, to counting calories, to low carb, to keto. 5 bite was good i was losing but it was hard and i kept cheating. counting calories was good but i wasn't losing a whole lot and felt like i needed more structure. Low carb was good but i felt like i needed more than that. so i tried keto. which im on now. I like it but i have someone helping me that hasn't had WLS and doesnt understand it. It's still hard to get in a lot. Like Protein still makes me super full , super fast. so i feel like im forcing myself to eat. I started on aug 2 at 202.4 i think it was. so 11 days later im hovering between 200.6 and 199.6 . i feel like EVERYONE is losing faster than I am, and i had WLS. So....has anyone that had the sleeve ever done keto? I'd like to continue doing it but is it ok to cut back my macros? what should they be at? can anyone help me????? Thanks in advance!!

Keto/VSG help please!
OutsideMatchInside replied to futureskinnypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you have been cutting for a while already you aren't going to see the big drop that people see on keto if they are coming from a high carb diet. Most of their initial loss is liver shrinking, and fluids. You also are already close to your bottom weight so you aren't going to drop a ton fast. What is your inch loss like? I am in a lot of Keto groups on Facebook and one thing I notice is a lot of people are losing inches and not pounds. I think people on keto diets maintain more muscle than other diets but that is just my theory and a few things I have read support it. How are you calculating your macros for keto? I use this calculator http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ As a WLS patient you have a huge advantage over most people doing keto. You can easily control calories and do keto. Most people on keto eventually go nuts on calories because most don't track them, they just track fat etc. Not that you have to go crazy with calorie counting with Keto, but it matters. Do you log your food? What does your typical day look like for you? -
Too much protein shake?

Long time hereditary migraine sufferer here, too. My daughter actually was hospitalized with a status basilar migraine for a week when she was 16. Her neuro gave us some of the best advice, EVER. He said don't get hungry or thirsty, those are sure-fire migraine triggers. Also, if you drink caffeine, stopping it cold turkey will absolutely trigger it. Then there's all of the triggers that are specific to the individual - processed meat (nitrates), red wine, beer, aged cheese, weather, hormones, what have you. The pre-op diet wasn't too bad for me, but I'm convinced it's because my surgeon doesn't have a strict pre-op diet unless you already have liver problems. I was only asked to replace 2 meals a day with shakes, and make my 3rd meal and any Snacks low-fat and avoid processed grains and refined sugars, fruit was fine. I didn't do all of that as well as I should have, but it allowed me to lose a few pounds. I also cut out caffeine, but I did it VERY slowly. If you're drinking plenty of Water (100+ oz a day is what I consider well-hydrated), and you're drinking shakes regularly, then I would suspect that the lack of carbs in your diet is the culprit. You didn't say if you're pre-op or post-op. If you're pre-op then I would suggest talking to your surgeon's team and seeing if there's some way you can add back in some calories and complex carbs to help with the migraines. If you're post-op, then all I can offer is to gut through it. I get VERY ill in ketogenesis, and the first 3 weeks post-op I couldn't get out of keto without eating stuff with refined sugar in it. So I just kept up the Protein and water and pushed through. Also, something my daughter's neuro told us... whenever you have a headache (migraine or not) it starts an inflammatory cascade in your brain that will turn into migraines or turn into a string of migraines. He told us on any day we had a headache of any sort, when we went to bed that night to take 800mg of ibuprofen and whatever dose of Benadryl we were accustomed to (I can take high doses because I've taken it forever, my daughter usually just takes one OTC). Obviously, you'll want to check with your doctor before taking any meds like that, but I like to share that tidbit because it has helped us reduce the string of migraines thing, or stress/sinus headaches turning into migraines the next day. Good luck!! -
The gas pain was only for about an hour. I have some soreness in the area where the hernia was repaired, but that's not very bad. Nothing Tylenol can't keep at bay. I'm allowed to eat pureed foods, but I'm really not hungry. Ate some mashed potatoes & gravy yesterday, it tasted good, but I only ate it because I thought I should not because I really wanted it. Drinking 1/2 a low carb slim fast now. I guess knowing I can have other stuff makes it less desirable. LOL. I haven't really been hungry since I started the pre op Clear liquids. I think when the ketones kick in the hunger wanes. After my surgery I could actually smell my keto breath. Yuck!

It's true.. fruit can be a bit high in carbs for some plans. 1/2 a medium apple has about 10g net carbs. If you're keto, it's too many. But, you asked about low fat, and now low carb too? What exactly does your nut expect you to eat?

Glad to hear some people are doing the keto diet as I wanted to do that for the last 20 pounds. I was a little concerned about that seriously high fat in it but it sounds like it's OK.

Top Recommendation from VGS people 6mos out or more

I did keto for a bit, but my doc told me not to cut out any food group, or I might end up lacking important vitamins or minerals (supplements notwithstanding). So I'm just sticking to the old - but admittedly boring - maxim of 'everything in moderation'. I don't have an addictive personality, so that's OK for me (but I can see that it wouldn't suit everyone). -
I did a low carb diet for the first 6-7 months of my journey; that is when I lost most of my weight. I started with less than 30g per day then went to 50g per day as I exercised more. I can't say I was addicted to carbs but they were my go to food; I'd eat bowls of Pasta and bowls of rice, so I opted to cut them out, temporarily. I found a lot of good low carb/keto diet recipes so they really helped keep me sane. Try looking for some and see what you can find. There are thousands out there. Nowadays carbs are the least of my worries My life revolves around calories in vs. calories out and my carb count varies per day. Some days it's at 100g, other days 150g. I am mindful of them but low carb has gone out the window; I feel much better working out when I eat carbs. My weight loss has slowed, but I'm saying that's because I am almost at goal and I don't expect the weight to fall off as rapidly as it did. Also, why are you cutting out Peanut Butter? PB is a perfect protein/fat source when doing a low-carb diet, not sure why you think it can't be eaten. As for ketchup and BBQ sauce, low carb variations do exist, do some Googling and you'll find plenty Hopefully Elfie sees this post; she is the queen of low carbing.

Nostalgia and emotional burdens
Kerensky18 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, First of all, I'm new to these forums and I'm glad to have your support. I'm pre-op awaiting insurance approval to be scheduled. I have a lot of emotional baggage over my hobby. I've been brewing and drinking (new) beers for the past 4 years. I like to go to festivals and new breweries and try their beers. In the pursuit of this, I've acquired or have been gifted brewing equipment, beer signs, steins, and glassware. Some of which I've only received at Christmas this year and haven't had time to use. I'm full of guilt that my family has bought me equipment and limited edition steins that I won't be using for a long time if ever. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't like the feeling that people wasted money on gifts And I also want to keep my steins and use them for other liquids. I may return to the hobby and brew for the enjoyment of others, I have a friend who owns a microbrewery and does Keto so he rarely partakes in his wares outside of quality samples. Sorry for the rambling posts, I'm not good at explaining how I feel :S Jason -
How long do you need to prioritise protein?
KC Chris replied to Chevron's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm sure it is different for everyone, but I eat protein first, then veggies. I don't deny myself any type of food. I eat a slice of pizza if I want it but I make sure it has lots of protein on it (cheese, meat, then a few veggies). I usually only eat 1 slice but it is enough to curb my appetite. There are also several Keto recipes (chicken or cauliflower crust) that are actually great alternatives. I also eat Keto protein waffles or pancakes if I feel a weekend splurge creeping up. On days that I feel I am not managing my protein as well I have some protein gel shots that have 20g of pure protein. I mix it with 1 ounce of water but you can do just the gel if you like the intense flavor. I also try to hit 45-60 g of protein per day. -
I feel like there should be a challenge: If you can wrap it in turkey breast you can have it. Lol There are so many diabetic and Keto friendly recipes out there now, I think this shouldn't be a major problem if anyone really really really wants to participate. Prep and bring you own foods, mostly eat those, force people to try your recipes, taste a few regular foods. Live life.
