    Pretty discouraged

Hi, I am from Canada too although I did not go to Slimband. I had my surgery in September and have had 5 fills so far! Why have you only had one? The general rule is once every four weeks - no sooner (at least with my office). My band was completely emptied after surgery due to complications. So I started from zero. Dont feel bad about the slow weightloss, it is not your fault! You need to get into the green zone and until then it will be hard to lose weight. Look at my stats below, nothing to brag about for sure!! I am eating about a third of what I used to eat and still not budging. I am still working on getting to that elusive green zone. I am getting discouraged, but this is for life so I hope it will work for me!! There was another girl here who has been complaining about Slimband since the Dr.Yau issue and not returning her calls. Hope you are doing OK and get somewhere with them! They have to do something, they cant leave all of their clients hanging!!

5th fill - difficult but worth it

So I went in for my 5th fill. I got .75cc fill. Felt fine but by that night couldn't even swallow my own spit. I went in the next day and had a .25cc defill. Felt fine and then a few days later the band tightened again had to go back in and have another .25cc defill. Now I am at 8.75cc in a 10cc band and feel great. I think I am at my sweet spot for now. Altogether - I am down 55 pounds as of this morning. What a wonderful feeling. Even though being overfilled was very uncomfortable - to get to the spot where I am at is great. I can hardly wait until summer - going to the beach is going to be a totally different experience than in the past. Before people looked at me like I was a beached whale. This summer I am going to feel awesome and totally enjoy the water with my boys. Thank you Slimband - I Love My Band.
  3. so done with it all

    New to Toronto!!!Need a fill!!!

We don't have fill centres in Canada like you do in the States. You could contact some of the clinics that do bands in Toronto and see if they will take you on as a patient but it might be costly. They won't just do 1 fill like the fill centres do, they sell you a whole package usually if they will even take you on. There is TLBC/Slimband, SWLC, CIBO and one at Humber River Hospital. It's worth a call to find out what they could do for you if anything.

    Lap Band Milestone in BC

Please keep our group informed. I would think providing fills for other clinics/surgeons would be profitable. I hope Slimband (TLBC) is one of them.
  5. Right on, cheers my coffee to the next 5.... I find that I still get exhilarated when I catch a glimpse in the mirror and see that this weight has stayed off. My brain sometimes just hasn't accepted the fact that I am no longer fat. I don't drink and I don't smoke, but I actually get a 'high' just from feeling thin and ecstatic that it has stayed off. I am finally free of that "heavy" that weighed me down for so long. My dearest friend just got banded this year. She has seen me lose this weight and keep it off for 5 years now. She is tired of trying the next program, the next diet. I am so happy for her and I am impressed by the support she gets from Slimband. Tom, it is good to hear your story and share Cheers again, Paula PS, I just can't imagine what the last 5 years could have been like, had I not made this decision. I feel so really very grateful!

I am. Got my band from Slimband in Toronto on May 24th. Happy with my choice and no issues with the clinic.
  8. I read on the Slimband forum that you can request a tax receipt through their finance department. I am sure most clinics are similar. Sharpie, Yes the surgery can be covered but you have to qualify for the surgery at BMI of over 40 or at least 35 with co-morbidities, then there are huge waiting times also. Plus you have to be referred by your family doctor to even see anyone to discuss it. My work benefits do not cover any weigh-loss procedures. In my case, my family doctor wouldn't even refer me to a surgeon, she just kept giving me "pep-talks". I was over bmi 40 at one point, but when I decided to self-pay I was bmi 39 and I do not have co-morbidities so I wouldn't qualify to have it covered. So, some of us go to private clinics.

    I need a buddy

That is great to hear. I still have the fear of failure. Pre-op diet is not too bad, as I get to eat food and not just liquid. But since supper I have been starving. I am having my surgery done by Slimband in Toronto and it is June 21st. 10 more days! How are you doing?
  10. Hi there, I'm new to this forum. I'm at my wit's end and I thought I could vent to you all to see if anybody can commiserate with me I was banded in Toronto, Canada on Dec 30, 2010. All was great, all went well until I started having liquid rising up my esophagus at night time. It turned out to be acid reflux, I had my band loosened a bit, and I went on my merry way. The acid reflux went away, and I was feeling great, except I gained about 30 pounds in the last 5-6 months. During this time, the liquid started coming back, it wasn't acidic (it didn't burn at all), so I was tested for H-Pylori - turns out I tested negative, but I was on a heavy dose of antibiotics just in case I did have the bacteria. I felt 100% better - eating better, sleeping all through the night. Well, the liquid is back now, and I have no idea what to do. I called Slimband (the company I used in Canada) and they told me that even after I paid the $16,000, my account was inactive and that in order for me to get a fill or de-fill, I'd have to pay $1,500 for 6 months. According to their contract, they only do these procedures for 5 years, and my 5 years is up on December 30 of this year. I lost it! I'm all on my own, I can't afford another penny and I'm so stressed it isn't funny. Has anybody had a similar experience? Is there anything I can do?
  11. I had my lap band inserted in March 2017 in Toronto and went home to Alberta with promises of support and help from my ‘coach, Cathy’. She sat with me prior to the procedure and explained how everything was to go after the band was put in place (she is still working for Slimband Canada). After the procedure I was experiencing discomfort and call to talk to the surgical nurses on site and was told it was normal. After 4 weeks Cathy was supposed to call and check up and start the coaching me on starting the plan but never called. Every time I called I left a message and she never returned any of my calls. She would respond by email is I wanted to pay for a fill request, but would not answer any of my concerns or questions. I eventually went online a few months later, only to discover the clinic shut down and I was left out in the cold and $12,000 poorer. I’ve had nothing but issues and had to go though referral and wait time to get into the bariatric clinic in my city. I just recently had a barium swallow done and discovered that the band ‘slipped’ and is sitting at the top of my stomach around the asophagus. This would explain why had have suck difficulty eating and having food getting stuck almost daily. This causes me to force throw up to dislodge food multiple times a week. I never go out with friends because it’s embarrassing and family get togethers are challenging. I now have a 6 - 8 month wait to have it removed. At that time they will be able to find out if the band slipped or was improperly placed in the first place. If someone is planning a Class Action Lawsuit.... I’m in!!!!!

    My Journey...

Day 1 of the start of my new life: So today is day 1 of my pre-op diet... I'm wondering how I will be able to live on yogurt and still stay sane for the next 10 days! I decided to get a slimband, because my mom has a LAP-BAND® and has seen great sucess (I think she has lost about 70Ibs, and has been able to maintain it for the last 3 years), also because I want to be in control of my life, and because of my family's medical history. I keep having these "what am I doing" and "isn't this a little extreme" thoughts, but at the same time I'm really excited about it (I can't wait to be able to control my eating!). I was so excited about it one day that I told 3 of my co-workers, 2 of them were like ok, whatever... and one of them is now watching me like a hawk, great:unsure:. Most people have been supportive, my mom, my husband, a few close friends. So far the journey with slimband has been a fairly smooth one, and the folks there have been awesome. Good Luck to everyone!
  15. I have just noticed that Slimband in Toronto are now advertising on TV. Part of the sales pitch that they mentioned as part of this advertisement is that you can eat whatever you want only in smaller portions Then they have pictures of burgers, pizza etc. etc. I would say this is kind of misleading what do you think??

  19. Hi Green: Yes I prefer TLBC over Slimband. I wish they would go back. I have had great success with my band. There was a time (lst years) that I had difficulty with aftercare communications but that was sorted out. Now I am happy on my journey.
  20. Hi eveyone, been reading lots on this site and learning a lot. I've made the decision - I am going for the surgery! Now I just have to decide where and when. Previously, there had been almost nothing but positives about TLBC/Slimband but now I'm starting to have second throughts. I really like that it is so conveniently located to me and they do seem to promise you all sorts of after care support - but they can "say" anything right? So I guess I'm asking - what have you received? Particularly those who live in/near the clinic? What services have you used or been able to access? Other than fills, what do they do for you after the surgery? Are the support groups or other follow ups? Thanks everyone and congrats on all your progress - I look forward to beginning my own journy soon!

    TLBC Clinic- Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Congrats Jorja, I am so excited that Slimband is sending a fill nurse to you. I am glad to see that they are doing the right thing. It is a good move on their part! I am glad that you wrote about your experiences on this site I think it helped you get the positive response that you did from Slimband. I hope that the people that read these posts who don't like negative things written about ones own personal experiences should know that good things can come out of it! Right Jorja:thumbup: I personally love to hear the good, bad and the ugly, but unfortunately it gets out of hand at times, i got caught up in it as well and I apologize for that, but I must admit these posts are entertaining. Doddie, You have a good balance in your posts, I wish mine could come across as well as yours do! Keep it up.
  22. One of my concerns is the local residents have access to a psychologist (so the event calendar indicates) but we don't. As tango indicated if she had access to some mentoring on how to deal with frustrations and stress without the use of food, the situations may have been handled better. Many people spend their life savings or go into debt to have the band so can't afford private sessions. When Slimband have such an individual available to some clients the effort should be made to make it available to all. And yes, I have expressed this opinion to them.
  23. Slimband is the name of a company (formerly TLBC) and lapband is the name of the product . There are a number of companies selling different bands. With the Slimband clinic, the surgeon puts on the band that best suits his patients at time of surgery. I am not sure of the bands they carry.
  24. Very simple, you have a wonderful doctor. Some doctors do not consider the CD as training nor do their assocations. My doctor said he would then backtracked. Also, support is not 100% fills. Support is being able to get answers to worries or questions ASAP. As the band is a new experience, I had some concerns in the first year. Now I am a bit more comfortable and we have an established support group things have gotten better. The fact Slimband staff did not consider travel costs and just cancelled the fill appointments is a classic problem I went through. They did a blanket cancellation with no thought to the expenses long distant travellers must pay. All though all the staff are very nice there just seems to be a lack of communications between each other. Hopefully, things will improve as this new group get themselves organized.

Hi Mimi, I had the same question myself when I was researching lapband, the clinic TLBC changed their name to Slimband. (they might be considering a new name change again due to these posts though) LOL!!!!
