4/13 bypass revision from installed Lapband 2008, removed 12/1/20 due to severe GERD and erosion! So glad I finally got rid of my band NO more acid reflux!

Does time of day impact fullness?

I had Lapband surgery 2008 and went from 322 down to 148…. seemed like I could never eat first thing in the morning or at least until about 9:30 or 10. I just had my gastric bypass revision 4/13 after having my band removed 12/1/20 due to esophagus erosion from severe acid reflux from my band and so far no issues with eating… not feeling hunger currently and have reminders set for when it’s time to eat
  3. I need some advice. I am about 7 weeks post op from revision. My brother passed away last week. I am having a hard time coping. Emotional eating is no longer an option. I would like 1/2 glass of wine. I know that transfer addiction is real to I’m being mindful of my triggers. Any advice would be appreciated.
  4. My first post to this forum and I'm grateful I found you. My surgeon does Band to Bypass in two steps. I had my band removed about two months ago. Except for tugging on a stitch I didn't know was there and having that hurt bad, it went smoothly. Four days ago I went in for step two... RNY. I was told in advance that there was about 20% chance that adhesions from a prior surgery (colon resection) might prevent the doc from pulling up the small intestine to meet the stomach. Imagine my surprise when I woke up and the nurse handed me ice water to drink. I knew I didn't have the bypass. Why? Holy Can of Worms Batman! I'm still waiting to get photographs from the doctor since I barely remember seeing them in post op but my initial Band Surgeon (Dr. Kuri in TJ) something "EXTREMELY" rare. (yup, my doc replied in caps to that) When I had the band in 2004 he said he put an extra stitch in to avoid slippage. I'm not sure what I have yet but apparently it was to dangerous to fix. I know there were stitches the doctor couldn't see when he removed the band and that my stomach is in the wrong place and he couldn't fix it. I've tried contacting Dr. Kuri just to find out what his technique was called or if my doc could talk to him or something. No such luck. My stomach is in knots in every way possible. I'm hoping to find out more about Dr. Kuri's surgical technique around 2004. Staff non-responsive so far.

    Advice about what’s to come

Most surgeons aren’t doing the band anymore so it might be tough to find medical support if you need it. You may only be able to find surgeons who are willing to remove them and revise to a different WLS. RNY and VSG are the most popular by far. Ask your surgeon questions. The choice between them should be based on what’s best for you. Hopefully your surgeon can explain the factors that go into their recommendations and you choose based on research and your comfort level. I would recommend protecting yourself from information overload especially watch “experience” video or reading testimonials. Your experience will be totally your own. I also recommend If at all possible to clean and organize your space to be clutter free so your recovery is smoother (Imagine tripping on something after having surgery or needing to clean your bathroom or mop the floors immediately after surgery). Good Luck ❤️

    BCBS of TN

I just googled "BCBS of TN bariatric surgery" and found this. This is pretty typical - most companies require some kind of medical complication from the first surgery before they'll cover the second one. But I'd check with them regardless. Procedures That MIGHT BE Covered The following procedures MIGHT BE covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield Tennessee: Revision Surgery (either Lap-Band Revision or Gastric Bypass Revision) is possible with EITHER of the following conditions met: Physician documented medical complication Physician documented surgical complication

    BCBS of TN

I don't know anything about BCBS of TN, but it's kind of a crap shoot when it comes to revisions. Some will only cover them if there's some medical issue with surgery #1 - and some don't cover revisions at all (like my friend who's having awful problems with her 10-year-old lap band - her insurance company won't pay for revision, in spite of the fact she's been hospitalized with issues and her doctors have said she needs to have a revision). Hopefully yours will cover it, though!
  8. Thank you for your input- I appreciate it! It's so weird because since my lapband removal, I have been having terrible heartburn, and didn't have it before lapband. Not sure if it's part of the recovery. If I do decide to do any revision surgery; most likely it will be RNY.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Thank you for the encouragement! I am getting all of my hospital requirements done - just need the psych eval and Bariatric class and I will be good to go for the revision.
  10. Has anyone with BCBS of TN been able to get a revision surgery?? I had a gastric sleeve in 2013 and lost 120lbs. Well 2 kids and pandemic later I’ve gained about 80lbs back. Any information will be helpful and appreciated.

    Conversion of Sleeve to Bypass

I had a VSG in 2012, lost a baby in 2016, then struggled with secondary infertility for 3 years, got pregnant in 2019, ended up needing emergency surgery and thus had a miscarriage, got pregnant again in July 2019 and my rainbow baby boy was born in March 2020.... during a pandemic! So needless to say I too hve gained my weight back. I am just now starting the process to get a revision. I have bad reflux as well.
  12. Hello, I have a lap band and am seriously considering revision to gastric bypass. With the lap band, I have by far the most restriction with my first meal of the day. If I’m going to get stuck, overly full, or throw up, it’s almost always with breakfast which can set off a chain reaction throughout the day. I know the surgeries are very different, so I’m curious if people with bypass notice differences in their ability to tolerate food throughout the day. Thanks!
  13. I am near 2 months out from Bypass to bypass revision. Weight loss is slower this time around, but I'm actually glad of it. It is consistent and manageable- I feel good. My vitamin levels have been stable - a million times better than after my original bypass. I have a long way to go yet, but so far, worth it.

VET Looking for Buddies and Pen Pals!

Hi, your story sounds a little like mine! I am 8 years out, had great success, and then life got in my way, too. My highest was 325, and I was 306 on the day of my surgery. I’ve been struggling for the last 3-4 years to get back to goal, but the truth is that I am hanging around 215, and I need to be at 175 (my lowest was 160, but it was shockingly thin on me). Anyway, over The winter I ballooned up to 132, and in the last 10 weeks I’ve lost down to 212. My first goal is 199, and then 185, and then we will go from there. I even went to my surgeon to see about a revision, which he will do. For the moment I’ve decided against it because as long as I restrict my eating, I don’t have as much trouble with reflex, and clearly, I can lose weight. I just don’t want another surgery if I can avoid it. The hard reality for me is that I have to remain ever vigilant and keep my calories consistently 1000-1100 for slow loss, and more like 900 to see the scale move at 1-2 pounds per week. I would love to connect with you and support each other, and anyone else who wants to join in!
  15. So I did have revision surgery sleeve to bypass. I’ll be honest and say straight up I did have it to help with my GERD. (Which I no longer have symptoms of) however also for weight loss! My highest weight (before sleeve) was 120kg. I got down to 90kg lowest however regained back up to 110kg. I am now 6 months post revision surgery and I am now down to my lowest ever of 80kg! I am so happy with my revision surgery and am happy with my results so far. Although my loss is a little slower this time around, I am sticking to my plan and weight is consistently moving downwards. No regrets. All the best to you :)
  16. Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve been on these boards! I was sleeved in 2011 and am now scheduled for revision to MGB in June. my question is directed to those of you who chose revision due to weight gain, not because of GERD, not that I don’t appreciate the view points of you all who revised due to GERD but because I really want to hear form folks whose primary reason for revision was to address weight regain. i am almost back up to my highest weight pre sleeve and I see such mixed results. What has your experience if you had revision to actually lose weight? Was it worth the expense? Did you get the results you were hoping for?

    Severe Food Addiction

I have the same problem @roses436 - I think about food ALL the time and graze ALL the time. Not good for RNY... I’ve gained 25 lbs back (I didn’t even reach goal) and am now going to be having a revision (3rd surgery - went from sleeve to RNY and now to distal). THIS time though I am going to get some therapy for my stupid brain... hopefully I can sort this out once and for all because I do not want to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over. Like you I smoked - I used to smoke 20 a day and gave up. The thing is, you can avoid cigarettes but you can’t avoid food. My advice is to get some therapy - I honestly think it’s the only way otherwise it seems some of us are doomed to repeat our ways. Surgery does not fix it - not for eaters like us.

    The Sleeve vs Bypass?

Reading this just 25 minutes after your update! I just submitted everything to my insurance today, and I’m going with bypass. This forum actually what was convinced me, last year, to do bypass. 1. too many stories of revision surgeries after sleeve since your body still absorbs the same amounts of food, unlike bypass. I know it’s not everyone, but I saw too many to make me feel confident in my ability to comply long term without a second layer of help (malabsorption.) 2. Diabetes runs rampant in my family. I’m not there yet but it’s an eventuality I wanted to do away with. 3. Someone above mentioned that bypass is so drastic... and sure, it is, but it doesn’t make sleeve less drastic in comparison. With sleeve, your stomach is essentially amputated, and with bypass your intestines are rearranged. They’re both hard, I just had to pick the “hard” I felt was worth all the trouble. Bypass was it for me. I spoke with my nutritionist today about duodenal switch, and though you lose more weight, you have more vitamin deficiencies and it’s harder to carry a pregnancy, which I eventually want to do. I’m glad you made the right choice for you!
  19. Had my revision on March 29th and it was a much longer surgery than we had anticipated .. took about 5 or 6 hrs but everything turned out okay.. I stayed an extra day in the hospital bc of how tired I was.. I could barely sip anything. Recovery at home went well. I did have A LOT of pain but that was probably due to the additional work they had to do and the length of surgery..I had more scarring and my sleeve was bigger than they thought..I am feeling great now..down 18lbs, no heartburn, Gerd or acid relux. It is slower this time around but I was also much bigger with my first surgery. Hw ever:400 Day of Sleeve surgery:350 Lw post op 1-2yrs: 230 Hw prior to revision: 290 Day of revision surgery: 278 1st day Post op: 288 Cw :260
  20. Hello Everyone My name is Tati - 39 and seeking to get you all's input and feedback. Back in 2012 I made the decision to get Lap Band Surgery; let me say this though; it was for ALL the wrong reasons!!! I had been working out faithfully and lost 40lbs on my own until one day while riding my motorcycle I got cut off and hit ending up in the trauma unit. I lost mobility of my left arm (temporarily), couldn't work out and depression sat in and I gained it all back. So I needed an "easy fix" or so I thought, that turned out to be not so easy!!! After 9 1/2 years - Today; May 5, 2021 I am sitting here bandaged up, in pain from Band Removal and rethinking EVERYTHING! Now at 39y/o I sit at my heaviest weight in my life. I only managed to lose a total of 30lbs before complications began and I have since regained all that weight back, PLUS an additional 55lbs Now I have the ultimate decision to make; Leave it alone; or have Revision Surgery - and If I take that route; which one do I choose - VSG or RYGB. This time for the right reasons and beinh familiar with one journey; and most importantly, I KNOW it's NOT easy! May 19th, 2021 I have my follow-up for my band removal and make the decision of which surgery to go with. I initially got the Band to be "safe" because it is not permanent and less invasive. Some are saying to revise to VGS and others RYGB. I have been reading threads here and other stuff online and see that a lot of people have had GERD and other issues with the VGS and revising to RYGB. TIA -Tati
  21. I had my revision on March 23 due to GERD. I have lost 18 lbs thus far and it definitely has been slow. How has everyone else doing?
  22. Hi folks. I had a revision from band to sleeve on 3/26/21. I'm on stage 4 and had some ground up gyro meat for dinner last night that was a little dry, but I did OK with it. Today I feel "off". My head has a dull ache, I've had off and on dull ache in my stomach/chest, and when I took my swallow able multivitamin, the underside of my jaw hurt a little. What did I do? Is it just indigestion? Any ideas before I call my doc? Anyway, in the meantime I went back to just shakes to let my stomach calm down a bit. Thanks in advance for answering. Sent from my H8314 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I haven't had a revision but I had no post op pain after RNY. Pain was my only concern but I did not need the hospital's pain med drip or Rx at home. Fingers crossed, you will have little or no pain too. I wish you well. This time around you will reach your most healthy weight. MSW
  24. I had RNY gastric bypass in 2004. I have gained weight back unfortunately and a revision would be to revise the surgery I had in 2004 to help me lose weight again. They go in their resize your pouch...etc. They say revisions are not as drastic with weight loss as the original surgery but I don’t know that for sure. Some people need revisions for medical reasons. I am hoping with mine to have a 2nd and final chance to get it right.
