I eat keto so the fat in chicken salad is great for me. It helps with my protein and fat macros. I don't really eat it anymore because it offers no restriction, but that is a different topic. Not all of us follow the same kind of post-op diets but I think that we can all agree that real food is better than artifical processed foods.

I had the same issue at one year out. For three months I stayed within about a 3 pound range, and I still had 30 - 40 lbs to go. It made no sense to me as I was averaging about 1700 - 1800 calories a day, and as a still somewhat fat 6 foot tall guy who works out 3- 4 times a week, that's not a lot. I was always hitting 80- 90 grams of protein, but truth be told I had allowed junk back into my diet, even at my relatively low calorie range. I switched up my eating habits and am now doing low carb/keto, and the weight is coming off again. As I approach goal, I'll start adding in more healthy carbs.

October 2016 Surgeries, 5-6 Months Out, How Many Calories...
Shana Lee posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To those that use MyFitnessPal, and are 5 to 6 months out approx how many calories are you consuming? And what are your macros; do u count carbs, Protein, fats, sugars? My avg kcal is 1100 lately. Carbs 69-89. I would like to keep them between 40-60. Protein 48 to 90. Goal is 110. Fats avg 60. I'm going to do the 2 week Keto Jump Start in my FB Group... then go to strict paleo. -

Gluten's a hard one to give up - I have a niece that's celiac and hang with the special needs mom crowd - loads of special diets. Consider digestive enzymes? Post-op I had massive problems with dairy and fat my sister/accupuncturist said it was gall bladder. More like yelled, "Gall bladder!" into the phone. You can also just eliminate wheat - there's really no reason to be eating it as a new post-op. I did recently add some low carb tortillas in occasionally which do have wheat. But most keto recipes don't use grains; neither does paleo. And I've recently started looking at Thin Healthy Mama baking blend as a no wheat way to work a little fiber in. And seriously consider the actual test for celiac. Avoiding gluten contaminated food is a whole other level. Maybe two. We have yet to explain to my MIL that "gravy" does in fact contain flour (and therefore gluten) and doesn't spring fully formed from the tail end of a turkey.. [emoji16] As for me, I'm preparing for a hysterectomy next week - apparently I have a few giant troublemaker fibroids jacking up my uterus. The surgeon referred to it as "ornery". [emoji848][emoji19]After needed a blood transfusion last month, I decided I agreed. So after I heal up from that, I'm hopefully just down to the PTTD and a few other things. Good luck to all you toiling on! [emoji16] -
What's your eating like?.. I'm 13.5 weeks post op and stalled 3 weeks ago as well. I hate the friggan scales tbh. I eat a mostly keto diet and I'm only a few kgs from goal weight although I never had one before I think Ill make one up lol Increase your fat intake and really look at what carbs your eating they can make a huge difference. You want to tap into your fat stores and use that as an energy source and not inflate your insulin. Walk and weights u don't need to any full on bloody cardio as u will stress your body and make cortisol. Christ honestly who knows I feel like I'm a bloody expert and still I'm stuck as well lol

My pre-op diet is weird
Mandybb replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No clue how ketosis is possible with the sugar in all that fruit, but call and ask the office just to double check to make sure it's correct information. I could still have fruit like strawberries or blueberries once a day on keto but it was 1/4 cup - 1/2 cup. I can only eat 15-20 carbs to stay in keto but my sister can eat 35 so I do know it's different for different people. -
HFLC or keto ( definitely NOT Atkins) is great.. Eggs and spinich in the morning cooked in butter Keto chicken crust pizza for lunch Curry mince and cheese in the arvo Chicken avocado with salad or veg sprinkled with olive oil at night..

This is quite normal. When doing a low carb diet, one's glycogen (short term carbohydrate energy stores) levels are being kept at their minimal level in the hope that the body will burn fat instead. On average, the body will keep around 2 lb of glycogen on board, which is kept in solution by about 8 lb of water. The body wants to get those glycogen levels back where they should be if tehy are low, so any additional carbohydrate consumption beyond ones normal minimal "low carb diet" level will result in some quick short term water weight gain. The amount is limited, and doesn't happen if one is on a normally balanced human diet. I never ran into this particular issue as i kept the carbohydrates and fats in relative balance throughout the whole process, so my glycogen levels, and associated water weight, never yo-yo'd all that much (that, and I couldn't afford the side effects of the overly low-carb/keto type diets.) The flip side of this is when marathoners carbo-load before an event by loading up on pasta, etc. - they are trying to maximize their glycogen levels to improve their endurance.

Trying NOT to fear fat??
OutsideMatchInside replied to TheRealMeIsHere!'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Well this is weird to me, since I lost most of my weight eating Keto, high fat, and basically no carbs. Your body needs good fats, you have no biological need for carbs. If you are a female and you want young healthy looking skin, you need fat in your diet. There is a reason I look 10 to 12 years younger than I am. FAT. So you basically eat just pure protein each day? What are your macros like, on a normal day? She talks a lot about diet here, don't be mislead by the title. -
I LOVE the keto diet I'm on bc the weight is melting off the fastest it has been since surgery on 12/5. This past week I lost 12lbs! I'm at 73 1/2lbs down total and I'm never hungry. It's amazing! The only annoying thing is the constant thirst and dry mouth. Plus side is my water intake has increased from an already very high intake. Down side, dry mouth and peeing all day. Does anyone else following this way of eating experience these side effects from being in Ketosis?

It's going to be very difficult post op, as you simply won't have the capacity to eat unless it sit's well in your stomach. There are natural ways to lose weight. Try a keto/primal lifestyle! I regret my surgery. The weight loss is not worth not eating out, acid reflux and all the cap that comes the rest of my life

Eating Crap And Still Losing - Utterly Lost And Confused....Game Changer!
OutsideMatchInside replied to Proud2BMe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Proud2BeMe Nice to see you posting again! I'm glad you worked out your alcohol issues, we were worried. I think that those of us that were super morbidly obese and lose to normal or close to normal size really face special issues. Most of the people that post here now are not and have not been super morbidly obese They start in the 200s if that. So their opinions to me don't carry that much weight (ha!) There are very few people that are in the situation that people like you and I are in. People can't and don't understand. It is a really huge mental trip, and most people will never experience it. I would normally say seek counseling but I am going to be honest, it isn't going to be very useful. Not many of them are going to have experience with what you are going through. You have to really just work through your feelings and emotions in your own way on your own path. I would rather see you abusing carbs than alcohol, but the fact you feel the need to go overboard on anything is an issue. I think time to adjust to yourself is the best and only realistic solution. I eat keto/low carb (less than 25G per day) because it keeps me upbeat and my moods balanced. I enjoy it and it is healthy. You should eat in a manner that makes you feel good and is healthy for you. You probably just lost weight because you upped your calories, not the carbs. So just eat more protein. I'm going to PM you. -
I think the idea that you could never eat out again is not only unrealistic but sounds incredibly depressing. There is a social aspect to eating out that I feel is very important. It's all about making the right choices. I'm about 2 1/2 months post op with the Sleeve and I've eaten out a handful of time. I made smart, choices and focused on protein first. I follow a modified Keto diet as much as I can so when I eat out I look at different websites and try to follow their advice and guidelines. I have eaten fast food once. It was today actually. I went to Wendy's and ordered a single burger with no bun. They put it in a lettuce wrap for me but I chose to eat it with a knife and fork. I have the tomato and a little bit of mustard on it. I ate about 2/3 of the patty and had 4 of my mother's fries. I used my fitness tracker and a Keto website to figure out the nutrition facts. This will be my large meal for the day. My NUT has me on 800-1000 calories a day, 100 grams of protein and suggests my carbs stay below 50 grams but isn't steadfast on calorie counting. I'm well on track today still at under 600 calories for the day and only 20 g of carbs.

I'm trying HFLC (Atkins/ Keto) to see what happens. I'm only 10 weeks out so maybe I shouldn't be doing that, but I was already pretty much doing it anyway, except for the high fats. I just want to make sure that I stay in ketosis and stay away from non-vegetable carbs because starchy foods have always been hard for me to eat in moderation. Today I had 660 calories/ 11 net carbs/ 32 grams of fat/ 73 grams of protein. I've been eating up to 1,100 calories most days, though. I lost 2.5 pounds in week one. I weigh again in the morning. Fingers crossed!

Bariatric Advantage Vitamins (1 pill,4x a day) When should I start birth control How long before I can work out? Weight training? Kick boxing or Strength Training? Can I do Rugged Maniac in May or November? Is the Keto diet a good plan to follow after surgery ( High protein, High fat) or should I stick to high, lean protein and good fats only in moderation? Can we have lemon/lime juice (Fresh)and when? *For teas and to flavor water* Can I use Proteu water (Lift) instead of propel? Is it possible to have a Binder for recovery? -
size of sleeve / portion stomach removed matter?
AnneElliot replied to bariboy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's a great question for your surgeon. I know most stomachs are cut to bougie sizes from 32 to 60 fr. But most surgeons do them around 36/40. Print the photo and ask during a consultantion. Another alternative for you is a Gastric Ballon, coupled with a strict keto diet. You wont eat much as you lose weight and its temporary -
Nostalgia and emotional burdens
Kerensky18 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, First of all, I'm new to these forums and I'm glad to have your support. I'm pre-op awaiting insurance approval to be scheduled. I have a lot of emotional baggage over my hobby. I've been brewing and drinking (new) beers for the past 4 years. I like to go to festivals and new breweries and try their beers. In the pursuit of this, I've acquired or have been gifted brewing equipment, beer signs, steins, and glassware. Some of which I've only received at Christmas this year and haven't had time to use. I'm full of guilt that my family has bought me equipment and limited edition steins that I won't be using for a long time if ever. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't like the feeling that people wasted money on gifts And I also want to keep my steins and use them for other liquids. I may return to the hobby and brew for the enjoyment of others, I have a friend who owns a microbrewery and does Keto so he rarely partakes in his wares outside of quality samples. Sorry for the rambling posts, I'm not good at explaining how I feel :S Jason -
Any sleevers doing a ketogenic diet?
BigUtahMan replied to BigUtahMan's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Google can give a better answer, but your brain and body have two primary ways of processing food to energy. One is taking carbs and converting them to energy (you brain prefers this method as it is the easiest to take a carb and convert to energy) or having your body convert your fat into usable brain energy by your liver converting fat into ketones. Thus, your body runs off of your fat reserves instead of your food intake. But your body will only do this when carbs are not a viable option. So people who eat enough carbs to sustain their brain energy won't use their fat as a fuel resource. In lamens terms, you are changing your engine to run off of cooking oil instead of gasoline. By eating a higher fat diet, but low carb and moderate Protein. (Fats have to come from quality sources like coconut oil and avocado, not deep fried chicken and gravy) Atkins is basically a keto diet before they knew the science behind it. Here is a site that provides a lot of info from it- www.dietdoctor.com -

Sleevers over 300lbs?
OutsideMatchInside replied to dstined4gr8tnes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How much you lose after 6 months is basically entirely on the types of food you are eating. The first 6 month it is easy to lose because you are healing still and are at max restriction. If I ate the way that most sleevers and most of the people that post on the forums eat, I am pretty sure I would have never weighed less than 250. The only reason I have been steadily losing for the past 1.5 years is because I eat Keto. I eat DENSE Protein, and it basically leaves no room for anything else and I am satisfied. I have fats in my coffee, and how I prepare my food, and that is about it. No carbs, I am under 20 carbs a day most days unless I have a Protein Bar or something. I have been to the gym maybe 3 times since surgery, Well maybe 10. I walk my dog every day, and I randomly do yoga, and that is it. It is a lot easier to control what you eat than workout, and exercise isn't necessary to lose weight, proper nutrition is. I eat 1300-1500 calories, once a week I eat about 1800-1900 and I am still losing. Low calories for a long period of time destroys your metabolism and holds you back from losing. I got to 1000 calories as fast and possible, and lost most of my weight eating in the 1200 calorie range. I eat more calories now, because of some lifestyle changes. I would just suggest anyone eat under 1100 calories for any length of time. You will end up stuck on low calories for the rest of your life. If you are unsure about how many calories you should be eating. Have your resting metabolic rate tested so you know where your metabolism is, instead of guessing. Also how may carbs do you consider low carb? -
Not new to low carbs & so I am familiar with some side effects
BgR72 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have done the atkins diet. I have done the fasting programs. Warrior program. Went 25 hours without food & then eat one time & fast again. So I have some understanding of low carbs or no carbs. I used the keto strips to see if I got into the fat burning process. So I did different programs. Ultimately, I didnt get a consistent weight loss from these programs. Maybe 18 lbs then couldnt sustain the weight loss and or lose any more. I noticed that while on a low carb program or no carb that I kept a dry mouth. Also with the dry mouth was the bad breath because of the dry mouth. It was unpleasant. So, I started to chew gum more change mouthwash to non alcohol. It helped somewhat but more or so to cover up the dry mouth & bad breath. Basically, I found out that dry mouth and bad breath may be what some may deal with when carbs are low. So with the pre & post op program this may become an issue for some. I heard that we cant chew gum. I think that's what I read. I will confirm with the nutritionist. If so, I got to find a replacement because I know this will be a problem for me. Maybe sugarfree mints? IDK. Still wont be the same like chewing in gum. I wonder is this just for 6 months post surgery not to chew gum ? Got to ask my doctor to make sure. If someone knows Im sure I will read it. But will ultimately confirm yes or no when I see my doctor this week. Anyone dealing with dry mouth and or bad breath while on pre or post op program. -
Anybody on Atkins?
BigUtahMan replied to hermione53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The Atkins diet is now usually referred to as the Keto diet or Ketogenic diet, which I also follow and enjoy. The premise is using your fat as primary source of energy rather than carbs. I think you should absolutely do it and see how your body adapts. As for me, I have lost all hunger pains and do not crave sugar or carbs like I use to even post opp eating my meal plan. I have lost about 10 pounds this month so far, (first 20 days) so I like that as well. The best thing about this diet, is I do believe it can be sustained as a sleever, as you are already 80% there as others have commented. My macros I try and hit are 30 grams net carbs, 75-100 grams Protein, and 100 + grams fat. (I try and stay between 1200-1500 calories per day.)
