    Usually they let you. When they don’t automatically, I pull the manager aside and explain I had weight loss surgery. Never had a problem.

    Menopause is what did me in too. I went from my usual lifelong range of 60-75kgs to suddenly being 91kg. It was like I woke up one day & there was the weight. Tried to unsuccessfully move it for a couple of years & decided surgery was my only option. I’m almost 58 & still have menopausal symptoms even on HRT. (Actually the estrogen flush we have while we’re losing actually stopped my menopausal symptoms. They came back once I got to goal though. ☹️) So losing your weight & maintaining is still possible. Don’t worry too much about doing ‘enough’ exercise. It only contributes to about 10% of your weight loss & I didn’t do any formal exercise while I was losing. Just was more active in my everyday life. Like stairs not lifts or escalators, park further away from where you’re going, make multiple trips up & down my stairs instead of only one or two trips, etc. Of course there are lots of other benefits to being active. I too found tea easiest to drink. I still have a large mug (about 400ml) of green tea every day. You’ll get your fluid up. Try drinking during the night as well. Sip every time you get up to pee. I still do this to push me up & over my goal. Looks like you’ve got a good handle on your protein so we’ll done. And congrats with your weight loss so far too.

    I’m 53 and sleeve surgery date was 1/9/23 so about 5 months post op. So far lost 78 lbs with a few stalls along the way. Longest was 3 weeks (painful wait!). Weight loss has slowed down some but still consistently 2 lbs week sometimes more. I average 900 calories per day and goal of 80 grams protein sometimes I hit more. My doc suggested I increase protein intake and fluids. I never miss fluids 64-70 oz day. I’ve found my meals are pretty consistent and predictable and honestly don’t stray too far in my choices yet. I’m full at 5oz but can eat 6oz. Anything over that in one sitting is too much. I don’t really snack and just eat 3 meals a day. My one concession is 1/2 TBS peanut butter in late evening when I start to feel hungry before bed. Nice treat and curbs the hunger. I have another 70 lbs to lose and look forward to the day when I can eat 1200 calories a day! It’s a journey but feeling great. The biggest bummer is sagging skin and a sad reminder of how I got here in the first place. I’m sure changes in our hormones affect the swings of weight loss along the way but overall I’m convinced we just need to stay the course and it will fall off.

    Thank you Arabesque! I kind of get in my head at times because i really think menopause did a number on me as far as weight gain and inability to lose it on my own without surgery. I know everyone is different and we should not compare the rate or amount of weight loss to others. I just wonder at some point if menopause will interfere with the amount of weight i am able to lose as it seems my hormones seem to be sabotaging me as far as hot flashes, etc. My "banana" was born on 4/12/23 and I've lost 37 lbs. I suppose not bad for 2 months. I average 400-500 calories a day. I get about 60g of protein per day. I will be honest and say i don't exercise as much as i should. Water is hard for me to drink the amount you are supposed to so i did switch to decaf black tea with splenda and of course that is easier for me to drink more of it but still dont think i'm getting the 64oz of liquid.

    Sorry if I got too personal. I'm glad they are working with you. And hope all works out. The 41lbs is since the start of the pre-op diet. I lost 15lbs during preop and 26lbs since surgery, that includes to separate stalls that lasted about a week each. I wish the tracker would differentiate the losses. Unless, I imputed them wrong.

I was feeling a little crummy about my progress (instead of weightloss punctuated by stalls it is more a stall punctuated by a few ounces lost every couple of weeks - and I am only 2.5 months out) and my hair has started falling out - then today I had an ultrasound and the technician asked me to stay while she went back to check that she had the right comparison chart - my liver shrank from 21 to 16 and from severe fatty liver to moderate - so thrilled!! - and a great reminder of why I did this!

    Gaining weight

    I wondered about the steroids too as they can increase your appetite. People I know say they make them crave carbs or sugar. I also agree with focussing on your diet. Exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight you want to lose but also makes you hungry. Of course there are lots of other benefits to exercising but don’t rely on it for weight loss. Reduce sugars (real & artificial), reduce fats, reduce carbs, reduce high processed foods, increase protein, increase vegetables, get your fluid intake up to 64ozs (try for more water than other fluids), introduce more low or no processed foods & watch portion sizes. All good new habits to start. You may find it easier to start adopting only one or two of these at a time.

    Yep, a stall. You’ll likely have a few more of them while you are losing too. They’re a natural & important part of your weight loss. It’s the time your body takes to reassess your current needs & your weight loss & readjusts things like digestive hormones & enzymes & metabolic rate. You don’t have to do anything except stick to your plan & let your body take the time it needs to recalibrate. They usually last 1-3 weeks. The stall will break when your body is ready. Unfortunately, they can be frustrating because your body doesn’t work to your timeline & needs.

    I was almost 54 when I had my sleeve. I lost all my weight & more. My surgeon was always happy with my rate of loss. The bonus 11kgs I lost took longer (11 months) than the initial 31kgs (6 months) to my goal weight. As @catwoman7 said there are many factors that influence the rate at which you lose. Some you can control but most you can’t. You’ll find there are average rates & average amounts of weight you can lose but averages only give you an idea of what you might experience not what you will. What you can be sure of is if you follow your plan & the recommendations & advice of your surgeon & dietician, you’ll lose weight at the rate which is right for you. It’s the same with how much weight you’ll lose. All the best & celebrate every pound you lose.

    and I agree that a 20 lb loss in 12 days is phenomenal. I lost less than that in the entire first MONTH. And I started out well over 300 lbs!

    Hi there! I'm pretty new here as well. I appreciate being here, and it's a pleasure to meet you all. Yaya and Flowergirl, I can relate on a few levels. I join some of you in the grandparent category. I'd like to keep up with my little darlings and be here for them. I've been learning a lot from the seasoned group here and I'm grateful to those of you willing to stick around and share. I ruled out WLS 2+ years ago for, well, weight loss. But in January, liver disease and increasing health issues brought me back. If you would have told me a year ago I would have been motivated by health reasons I wouldn't have believed you. At age 62, it's time to act. I'm scheduled for sleeve surgery on July 27th. I wish you all well in your journey!
  18. I had my consultation. No real diet plan but I’ve been trying on my own. Not working. My insurance company didn’t require weight loss before surgery but I’m not allowed to gain. Well I am up 15 lbs. help!!! I’m trying to diet and exercise. Can’t do much exercising because of back and leg pain issues. Retaining water. They ordered lasix. It’s not doing much. And just got done with steroids for the back and leg pain. I’m exhausted by the time I get home. I did go swimming last night and did aqua exercises. Just worried I can’t get this extra weight off. No surgery date yet. Have an endoscopy scheduled for July 11th and that’s my last requirement. Just nervous and stressed between the pain and the weight gain. Thanks for reading. Advice appreciated.

    I don't know your surgery weight but nearly 21lb within 12 days of surgery is a lot of weight loss regardless of surgery weight. The high weight loss may be due to dehydration if you aren't getting anywhere near sufficient fluids. At 12 days I wouldn't say its a stall when you don't see a scale loss (but is this one day, two days or more???), but more likely your body is holding on to fluid to rehydrate if dehydration is the issue. You may want to ensure you are getting sufficient fluids, and also lay off the scales for a few days. If you are the type of person that doesn't cope with daily weight fluctuations may be only weigh yourself once a week or once a fortnight.

    Complex Health Issues & Physical Limitations

    I didn't really have any health issues, but I'm also a "senior" - there are lots of us on here who've had surgery in our 50s, 60s, and even a few in their 70s. not being able to exercise much shouldn't be an issue. Weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise (exercise has a greater effect during maintenance, though (once you reach your goal weight) - but then, you can only do what you can do. But for losing weight, no - it doesn't play a major role). I've "known" several people on bariatric forums who rarely if ever exercised, and they still lost a ton of weight.
  22. Hi everyone. I appreciate learning from your shared experiences. I'm a 62-year-young grandma with a zest for life. I joined here 2+ years ago, but initially ruled out WLS. Over the past two years my health has declined surprisingly, becoming complex with several new diagnoses, including: 1. A rare and progressive neurological disorder (misdiagnosed for years). - I'm told my nerve fibers will not replenish, thus my muscles (legs, especially) will continue to weaken. I'm also told I should be realistic about my physical limitations as my level of exercise isn't expected to improve post surgery. I am realistic, but I'm always hopeful. My exercise level currently consists of short distance walking (1-3 blocks) every other day as tolerated and on opposite days 10 minutes on a recumbent cross-trainer (NuStep). 2. Autoimmune issues have been resistant to stronger meds intended to cut inflammation, which also progresses my neurological disorder. 3. It was the diagnosis of liver disease (fibrosis stage 3) in January that led me to move forward with WLS. I am scheduled for the sleeve in late July. Can any of you relate to having similar health issues with WLS, especially nearing the golden years? Or did less-than-optimal exercise levels hinder weight loss (losing less than expected)? I'm praying the surgery will jolt my nerves to replenish at least somewhat and exceed expectations. We'll see. Thanks for your time! (Feel free to message me privately.)
  23. I don't have a surgery date yet but thought I would share what my requirements were. I had to have 3 consecutive PCP visits for medically supervised weight loss attempt. 1 nutritionist and 1 psych visit. Smoke/nicotine free for 2 months, EKG, Chest x-ray, and an endoscopy (so he could look at my hiatal hernia). This was all required before it could be submitted for insurance approval. Turn around on insurance approval is around a week or so. I am going to the beach mid July, so I am hoping for an August surgery date (fingers crossed!).

  25. Is stalling every 2 weeks normal? I know stalls are normal, and I do expect it, but this much? It's super frustrating. I get a good rhythm of weight loss, then BOOM, nothing. This is my second stall since my May 1st surgery.
