At A Loss (Not Weight Loss)

I understand the situation very well, lifelong chronic illness and disability along with metabolic disorders and inability to exercise at all I fought for gastric bypass surgery I desperately needed the tool because my own efforts were not sustainable. To be honest I had to drastically cut carbs/sugar and calories. Prioritize protein first, find the calories that you start losing weigh at. I only started to increase my calories once I hit goal. Make sure to get minimum of 0.36 grams protein per 1lb body weight. And honestly exercise isn’t really for weight loss, building muscle is. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn. If you can do some resistance exercise some strength training maybe through physical therapy. That might help. For me my medical condition, exertion causes muscle weakness and damage and for me to feel ill. I can understand not being able to rely on exercise. But if you are able to do limited exercise look to building muscle. And that’s also why you need to prioritize protein over calories. Getting maximum protein for minimum calories. Also be mindful of sticking to three meals and how much snacking and start tracking your daily calories and protein along with tracking foods you eat each day to see what helps or hurts. just one example: I like mixing yogurt like Fage plain, TwoGood, or oikos triple zero with 1/2 scoop of PEScience protein powder. recipe example: oikos triple zero peanut butter banana, with 1/2 scoop PEScience peanut butter cookie protein powder = 160 calories, 27 grams protein. I mix it I a bowl with a bit of pink salt and stick it under the freezer 30 minutes and mix it again. A little low sugar jam and it tastes like pb&j polaner sugar free with fiber I think ... these days I add a little low carb granola for crunch. (Sola granola 15 gram portion is 70 calories and 4 grams protein 2 net carbs) And some sugar free land o lakes whipped cream. Overall very low carbs. PEScience http://rwrd.io/c6uus2e
  2. Yogurt only has CFU in millions. Need CFU in trillions to do any good. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Only if it has active cultures - it should say somewhere on the container if it does. I grow my own kefir from scratch - it's really easy, and pretty cheap (mostly just the cost of the milk because the grains cost only $15 and have kept going for 5 years so far). Kefir also has more bacteria than yogurt, and contains many more strains of healthy bacteria than yogurt or most supplements do.
  4. I grow my own - that way I know they're fresh! I make kefir, which is much easier than yogurt - just pour milk in, wait a day, drain the kefir off - done. No heating or other nonsense required. I ordered the grains that hold the probiotic colony and make the kefir from Amazon - just search "kefir grains." Only costs 10-20 dollars. I've had mine for 5 years, and have given them away to several people since then (they multiply over time).
  5. Probably the only reason I don't have that issue is because I have EOS (it's an autoimmune disorder that causes narrowing in the throat and can cause choking) and because of that for the past few years I've eaten really, really, really slowly because choking freaks me out and after wayyyy too many ER visits with food stuck in my throat I finally got a clue. 😓 My advice, take smaller bites and chew your food to MUSH before swallowing. If you are eating foods that you don't need to chew (yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) then just take a small bite and then set the food aside for 30 seconds to a minute before taking another bite. Still keep with the small bites.
  6. I'm a picky eater too. I got through the pre/post op diet just fine, twice. Once for the Sleeve and once for the bypass. My first two weeks post op included 3 protein shakes a day, water, chicken or beef broth, non-fat yogurt, sugar free popsicles, sugar free pudding prepared from a powder mix, and sugar free sports drinks like gatorade. Since you only follow this diet for two weeks, you could pack a box of supplies and bring them with you. My second two weeks include eggs, string cheese, applesauce, bananas, mashed potatoes, yogurt, creamy peanut butter. I also make home made turkey chili and puree it. During this phase you can have everything from the Liquids only phase, but I was ready for new food. I was told if you can get protein from natural sources, it is better than getting it from protein shakes. The last phase will be soft foods which allow more meats, cereals, toast, pasta, vegetables, and cheeses. You should get a list from your nutritionist, but there are several informative lists online. Search for a Post Op bariatric surgery diet. You'll want to purchase a large supply of bariatric vitamins online as those are usually difficult to fine in stores. My Doctor asked me to wait two weeks post OP to start vitamins to avoid nausea. I wish you good luck with your surgery, travels and studies. Sounds like you are really getting a new start this year.

Pre-Op Diet, Are you hanging in there?

It seems everyone has a different pre-op diet. I started mine 6 days ago. I'm fine most of the day but I'm starving when I wake up so I might add a yogurt in the evening, but I've lost 4 lbs.
  8. I find that if PB is warm and gooey, it spreads really good and I don't need as much. I like it on a toasted chaffle! It's also good swirled into some greek yogurt!

Things that Taste Like Peanut Butter

I echo the PB2 (or PBFit - or any of those powdered peanut butters). It isn't quite the same when you reconstitute it with water to make a paste - but it'll do in a pinch. But I usually just mix it in with things - like yogurt or chocolate protein shakes - then it's OK!

    Hungry right after sleeve

I also was really, really hungry right after surgery. For me, what seemed to really help the hunger go away is when I was finally able to get enough protein in starting at about 1-1.5 weeks after. I was having trouble at first because I totally gagged on the pre-made protein drinks I had tried and found fine before surgery. My protein intake increased partly because I moved to full fluids and was able to start eating things like yogurt. I also found an unflavored protein powder I liked and added to pudding and broth. (Just be careful adding protein powder to hot liquids - if the liquid is too hot, the protein clumps up and gets all gross.) Now that I'm 3 months out, the unflavored protein powder is still my staple - I'm back on coffee, so I use it to make a 30 g protein latte most mornings - heaven! Hang in there! The first few weeks after surgery can be really tough, but you'll start to feel better and find your routine soon.

    5 months post op today

Thanks. And yes, 64 lbs in 5 months is crazy For food, I am generally right around 800-900 calories, with around 70 grams of protein. I am low carb, but not super low, so I'm happy between 50-80 grams net (excluding my fiber). My typical day includes: Breakfast: Coffee w/ sugar free creamer and a Protein shake. I add a fiber supplement as well. Lunch Varies, but something like chicken salad on whole grain bread (1 slice) or ground chicken w/ beans and taco seasoning Dinner Varies as well, but generally chicken of some sort with veggies. I generally don't snack. I have just started to feel hungry again so if I am really hungry I may have some greek yogurt. I also occasionally have a SF popsicle at night.

Does Food Still Bring You Joy? a newbie wants to know.

I will be 2 yrs post op in Oct and I can honestly say I don't really care about food anymore! If I get hungry (rarely) I can eat a couple of crackers and be satisfied. I still track my food to make sure I eat enough protein otherwise I may forget to eat all day. Work days are better because I take my food with me for my 12 hr shifts. I live alone so I don't cook much anymore. Yogurt is a fine dinner in my book! If I go out for a meal I bring at least half of it home for later.
  13. Hey everyone! I start my 2 week liquid diet on 6/24, so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row now. I know a lot of people use the ready to drink protein shakes, but I was wondering if anyone has any go-to protein shakes they make on their own with protein powder. I usually make almost a smoothie with protein powder, with yogurt and fruit, but my nut told me I won't be able to add the fruit on the liquid diet. The thought of just adding protein powder to almond milk grosses me out for some reason, so I figured I'd ask for some suggestions. TIA 😊
  14. I usually put cinnamon and artificial sweetener in my chaffles - then I top them with a dollop of plain Greek yogurt and fruit compote (I make my fruit compote by cooking down berries with artificial sweetener or SF Torani syrup plus some cinnamon and vanilla. Sometimes I have to put a little thickener in there if it's too liquidy....). My husband eats his with maple syrup.

    Craving Ice Cream

I started to make a faux ice cream sort of thing with my daily dinner yogurt. It’s good with oikos triple zero peanut butter banana yogurt cups, PEScience select peanut butter cookie protein powder (1/2 scoop) I mix in a bowl with a little pink salt. It gets a frosting like consistency. Then I pop it in the freezer 30 minutes. I take it out and mix it again, I guess you could use a hand mixer to whip more air into it. I don’t have one, but it does taste really good with sugar free land o lakes whipped cream. And it’s very low carb, hardly any sugar. The oikos has chicory root fiber ( the best kind of fiber) and uses natural sweeteners. I normally use plain Fage Greek but sometimes use this or TwoGood yogurt. I also found a low carb granola in the grocery a few days ago. Called Sola it’s 4 net carbs and it is 8 grams protein. though I only plan to use half a portion on my yogurt. 16. I was very much a sweets lover and chips and pasta and bread and alllllll the things you can't eat for at least six months after your surgery lol. I actually stopped eating all that stuff months before I even had my surgery so despite the fact I'm only four months post op, it's been close to a year since I've had most of that stuff. Do I miss it? Kinda. But honestly, your taste buds do change and you'll find enjoyment in foods you perhaps didn't appreciate as much or even like before! I loooove my yogurt in the morning. And sometimes at night lol. I find that's actually the thing I crave the most and I kinda get my sweet fix from it. Also, sugar free pudding gets me my chocolate fix when the store is out of my chocolate protein drinks lol

    HELP HELP HELP!!

it will pass ... Definitely a good bone broth will help. Also what protein shake are you drinking? Some just aren’t a good quality and make you feel hungrier. I use PEScience select and it’s a blend of premium whey protein and casein to help feel full longer. I mixed one scoop with 6 ounces of plain unsweetened Ripple milk for extra protein. I think it came to about 160-170 calories and 30 grams protein. And carbs depends on flavor but no more than 3 net carbs ... I like peanut butter cookie. I would mix it, put it in the fridge to let it thicken then mix again. I’d thin it with a little water only if I needed to. actually I still use it and mix half a scoop with Greek yogurt. Either plain nonfat Fage. Or TwoGood yogurt. Although my current addiction is Mixing it with oikos triple zero peanut butter banana flavor Greek yogurt cups. I put a little pink salt. Mix it up and put it in the freezer 30 minutes and mix again. Like a fake ice cream. And use a little sugar free land o lakes whipped cream. But it’s extremely low carb and gets me the protein I need. It’s actually my go to dinner ... but I’m weird that way. mixed in yogurt it has a frosting like consistency. link to the protein http://rwrd.io/c6uus2e

    Revision completed

I came home 5 lbs heavier and I am only 2.5 down from when I went in. I am on full liquids and am not having any issues. I have had yogurt, creamed soups, ricotta bake, and I tried a scrambled egg but it sat there awhile so I wont be doing that for a bit longer.
  19. Today was a list making day. .. Things I need to accomplish to prep my family. I'm assuming I won't be helpful to them for about 2 weeks. Also a list of things for the hospital. One for Meds and comfort items for the first few weeks at home and finally a grocery list. I'll go shopping tomorrow for my 3 day liver diet (starting the 6th) and first week of "food". My list: Bone broth (chicken and beef) Several different kinds of Protein shakes Sugar free jello (plan to mix in some protein powder and premake into 1 oz shots) Sugar free gatoraide Sugar free Popsicles. Unjury powders I've also got plain fat free greek yogurt, P2 powder, eggs, and liquid stevia on the list to jumpstart week two. I'm also planning some socially distant coffee dates in the next week with a few close friends who I'm not telling about my surgery but who might notice I'm off the radar for a while. Would love to know what you guys are doing to prepare? ONWARD!
  20. My nutritionist gave me a packet with everything that I’m allowed to eat and when I’m allowed to start eating them....so this week I am allowed eggs, cheese, peanut butter, Greek and regular yogurt (plain only), skim milk and plain hummus. I started eating yesterday and my first thing was an egg....I made 1 egg with a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top....I could only eat half of it. I was amazed....but the 2 bites I had were delicious!! I would recommend not trying the broth until after your surgery. For me after only having protein shakes for about 4 days I was ready for something different and the broth was SO GOOD!! I really felt like I was eating something! I actually never was told to do any purées....Its strange to me how it seems that every doctor has different dietary guidelines for their patients.
  21. Jami... I bet you can't wait to get to pureed foods. You're almost there, yes? What will you try first? Yeah, I'm concerned about the protein shakes. I've tried several the last 2 weeks and like ZERO of them. I can tolerate plain fat free greek yogurt (18 grams protein) with a little P2 powder (which has about 6 grams of protein) and sugar free chocolate syrup blended with ice. I'm hoping I can tolerate them afterwards. I figure I can do anything for 2-3 weeks. Then the real test will begin. Bought some chicken bone broth and still haven't tried it. Anyone like it? Anyone else have a nervous tummy? It's hard to see how these new products will settle when I'm already in stomach distress. Dave I just completed driving my dad to his 6 weeks PT after his new hip surgery. He's in his 80s and doing great. That's a pretty slick surgery. In and out. Anyone else out there with surgery dates? What are you doing to prepare? I ordered some unjury powder to try as I've heard good things and wanted to see if I can make jello with it. I also ordered a body pillow and a compression wrap along with a few things others have suggested that helped them like Gas X, bioteen spray for the hospital and a pair of loose fitting pajamas. With the exception of childbirth I've been lucky enough to stay clear of hospitals. This will all be new to me.
  22. It just isn't moving like I thought. Surgery weight 266, current weight 237, almost 30lbs, about a week out from 3 months. It's going so slow 😭. So I've recently upped my water and my cardio (doing 40 min a day 5 times a week) eating less than 800 a day, usually around 700, sometimes give or take. Always less than 25 net carbs for the day. I've only lost 3 lbs this month. Any advice? I'm really eating pretty right, 90% protein the rest veggies, yogurt, string cheese, making good choices. Maybe calories need to go back to 500?

    Hate bypass

Summerset thank you so much !! You hit the nail on the head on so many things. I don not feel as crappy or wore down as I did after the sleeve. I can drink just as I did the day before the revision and I asked the surgeon about that and he said it was okay just a mouthful at a time. Chobani yogurt is 5 oz and I just ate one for breakfast different brand with 15 grams of protein, no problems. It is very scary because I have no idea of what I am living with now and how this is going to work. I will say I have not gotten sick and thrown up on anything yet, but I didn't with the sleeve either so I am hopeful there, but what is this gas thing and is this something that is forever with the bypass ? Thank you for making me feel not alone, I really do appreciate it.

    Hate bypass

I feel no restriction with this bypass nothing, notta. I miss my sleeve and I am so sad I couldn't keep it, crying as a matter of fact, and all this gas, I have **** myself twice today !!! I keep telling myself everything will be okay and its way early. I feel so alone and helpless . I ate a Chobani yogurt today I made myself go slow but ate the whole thing and felt NOTHING had that been my sleeve 5 days post op it would have only been a few bites and I would have been done.

I'm underweight but can't eat much

From your side banner your weight seems in healthy range on the BMI scale. But if you are feeling unwell then that’s something else. Have you had your gallbladder checked out? You might need a HIDA scan with CCK and also check the bile ducts you could have bile reflux from the gallbladder. Rapid weight loss leads to gallbladder surgery for a large percentage of people. I had mine out during my surgery due to chronic inflammation. I haven’t considered my weight too low yet, I’m still within BMI range for my height of 5’ though I did go past my goal. I probably shouldn’t go further. Some parts of me are just bony and we’re before losing weight. I’m not worried about it at the moment unless it effects my chronic illness. I feel like I eat as much as I can. I Do still have issues and know how it’s a pain dealing with doctors. I had been told some months back now, that I had stricture, Schatzki’s ring, sliding hiatal hernia. My surgeon did one balloon dilation but it was so narrowed it likely needed several. But I made the mistake of having my gastroenterologist do my second endoscopy since I was told I needed a colonoscopy which I regretted afterwards. I won’t get into why. i kept telling the dr I’ve been having such intense pain and spasms under my ribs on the left side where the remnant stomach is. I had history of ulcers there. I’m having a double balloon enteroscopy June 10th. It was postponed we’ll actually canceled since I discussed it with my surgeon in February, didn’t see the special gastroenterologist until March and couldn’t schedule the test until April and then it got canceled ... that wasn’t even the only medical test to be canceled indefinitely. had to try to edit myself I write too much and I realize, I’m sorry I’m no help. It can be hard to pinpoint what the problem might be. The surgeon needs to know in case they need to run any tests. Try increasing your protein intake. Mixing plain Fage Greek yogurt (Or TwoGood yogurt) with PEScience select protein powder tastes really good. protein I use: http://rwrd.io/c6uus2e
