    Just Want To Feel Better

Thank you... I dumped on yogurt in the hospital and am scared to death to try it again. Worst feeling ever! There have been days I haven't gotten any Protein in. My hair is gonna eventually fall out and I'm never gonna feel better. I just wanna cry some days. I've lost a little over 30 pounds but I would rather have my 30 pounds back than feel like this! Ugh! Gained! Help!!! :-(

I follow that same path of weight loss as dhales. I was at 192-194 for 10 days, then over one weekend I dropped to 188. Now I flirt between 188-192 for the last week. So if the trend continues, I'll drop to 185 and hang out between 185-188 for a few weeks. I used to sweat it but not anymore. tmf

    Hi! New here!

I had a very similar situation, but had my band drained for both pregnancies (banded since 2003). I had band slippage and 2 hiatal hernias (first diagnosed Nov 2015/repaired Dec 2015, and second April 2016/repaired May 17 w/band removal & sleeve conversion). I'm currently at day 11 with my sleeve. Loving it! The first few days were a bit rough -- painful to drink, then the constant feeling of hunger. Yesterday (day 10), I was able to have yogurt and my first full feeling! Do know there is hope, and you are not alone! I read in one of the forums here that patients with band conversions have a more difficult time. My NP confirmed this yesterday at my first post-op appointment. So do keep this in mind if you're tempted to stray from better food choices.

    Someone finally noticed!!!!!!

2 of my colleagues (the ones who know about the surgery) and I actually have an office pool going as to which of my other (10 or so) colleagues will say something first. I think people notice before they're actually willing to say something; weight being such a sensitive issue and all. At least I hope that's the reason they haven't said anything and not that they haven't noticed! Congratulations Jlogantx!
  5. Greetings everyone, Thank you for taking a moment to read about my issue and helping. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since I've been banded. For the first two weeks after surgery I stayed home to heal. Last week I went back to work and this weekend I went on a little get-away with my friend. I have terrible parking where I work and have to walk about 6 blocks to and from each day. Last week I got a little tired walking back and forth. I do carry a backpack with my lunch and work files. Perhaps 10 or 15 pounds. I thought I did ok - just a little tiring, not painful. This weekend we went to Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. On the drive there from Seattle I started to get pain at my port site. (I have a two inch incision on my right side under my rib cage). The pain is at the left end of the incision and I'm starting to feel a bump or protrusion there. I did pick up my suitcase and put it in the trunk of her car which probably weighed 30 pounds or so and also pulled it out that night once we got to the hotel and as I rested that night the pain went away although I could still feel the bump. I also had jeans on and the band of the pants were against the incision while we were driving, but it didn't feel tight or painful. So then the next day at the resort we walked around, I walked up and down stairs, walked up and down inclines, etc. It kept getting painful at the port site and my friend and I would have to stop for me to rest. We left after a short time because I couldn't easily walk. It doesn't hurt as much when I'm sitting down, but I can definitely feel the bump. When I'm standing it is more painful and protrudes more. It seems to hurt the most when standing still, but the pain is also pretty significant when walking. Please help... I gave all the details above to explain exactly what I've done. Could it be the port sticking out? Do I need surgery to have it pushed in further? Could it be a hernia? I just don't understand what it could be because I don't feel I've done anything crazy or out of the ordinary. Thanks to all for your support and advice.

    Pre-Admission Appt.

Wow, I had my pre-admit hospital visit this morning and all they did was draw blood and tell me a little about how things will go on Wednesday. I did speak with the anthe....the man who will put me to sleep lol! I didn't have to have an ekg because I don't have any heart problems or take bp meds, and I don't have to do any shots, but I do have to wear the stylish stockings for 2 weeks! Good luck on your surgery! My goal weight is 135 too, if you don't mind me asking have you lost 18 pounds on the liquid diet? I've only lost 10, our starting weights are almost the same!

So... 2011 In Restrospect. How Was Your Year?

Most of 2011 was a total loss for me. I was sort of in a funk with everything. I didn't do anything most of the year. I mean nothing. I started a highly stressful job back in december 2010 which has sucked the life out of me but I couldn't find a new one even though I have really tried. I gained 20lbs this year (up until December when I had VSG) putting me back to my all time high of 320. The highlight of my year has been the entire VSG process which happened very recently. The thrill of finding out that my newly changed work insurance covered it, to the thrill of finding a surgeon, getting my date, and then finally having the surgery. I did all of this by myself. And I'm very proud that I was able to accomplish this. I had been dealing with WLS exclusions in insurance or no insurance for the last 10 years. Then out of nowhere the new insurance change at my job in the fall, allowed WLS. I think 2012 will be my year for sure!
  8. Yes! I got in 20-30 the first few wks. He wanted me to get 60. I might hit that now. I'm 10 wks out. Do your best. You'll be able to get in more as the wks go on. ❤️
  9. Hi all, I got a referral from my PCP to see a surgeon this coming September. I have been reviewing my insurance and they want 6 months of a physician supervised diet within the past 2 years (which I don't have) plus 3 month pre-op diet. They say that I have to show at least a 5% loss during the 3 months but if I lose more than 10% they could extend the physician supervised diet and postpose or deny surgery. Has anyome lost too much on their pre-op diet and been denied?
  10. Im brand new to this page but felt it would be great to get some support from those sharing the experience. Ive been overweight most of my adult life but its been in the past few years that things have gotten bad. Ive tried every diet there is 3 times over with little success. Ive been hypnotised, had diets prepared based on my blood type, seen dietians, seen psycologists and nothing works long term. Ive come to my own conclusion that I need to be physically stopped eating. And this seems like my best option. Im booked for my sleeve surgery on the 26th of July. Until today Ive felt nervous, unsure and a bit scared. But Ive started on Optislim today and I now feel like my journey has final started and Im ready to get this done! Having said that, today has sucked! I was fine this morning but once I got past lunch time, I started to feel heady and yuck. My worst time to eat is night time when my kids and husband are in bed, so Im nervous about how Im going to go tonight. Im also a bit fearful of those first few weeks post surgery. And I spend a lot of time wondering what the long term impacts of this surgery will be - like 10 years +. My surgeon said there isn't much scientific data beyond 5 years so I do wonder what the impact could be on my 30 years from now. Having said that, I realise that if I continue to put on weight there is a good chance I wont be here in 30 years! Anyway, thanks for reading my first post. Ill look forward to any thoughts/suggestions/tips anyone may like to share!

    About the plateau/starvation mode theory....

Just a side note. If you are working out a lot, not having enough calories will definitely give you less energy to put into the work out. So you may work out for the same amount of time, but the net result is less calorie burn and maybe even less fat loss. If you get enough Protein and you are working out. You can eat very little and still be healthy. But that is the big kicker, if you eat too little your going to be tired and not want to work out as much. If you aren't going to do any physical activity, then you still need the protein, but maybe not quite as much in calories. The problem is the less you eat in calories the more critical the protein, and 1 gram of protein is going to be at best about 10 calories. So lets say you want to starve and eat protein isolate all day. You would really need to eat about 70-90 grams of protein because you don't want your body using muscle for energy. Well, that is already about 700-900 calories.
  12. Oh I hear ya..... Please try and get your fluids and meds in. I found if I took baby sips all day long I was able to get "some" of my fluids in. By 10 days post op I was drinking my 64 oz. of water and 64 grams of protein daily. If you are really having a hard time I would contact your surgeon, you may have stricture. Are you throwing up at all??

In Limbo (not the fun kind)

Thanks for the advice, guys. I ended up having my second cardiology appointment today (it was scheduled for an hour after my original surgery was scheduled.. the irony) but the doctor was sympathetic and super awesome. He was knowledgeable about my condition and cleared me for surgery. He saw where my heart was functionally okay to withstand surgery. He was really excited about my case and gave me some good information and wants to follow up with me. I think it was good that I got all this info because it gives me more faith in doctors where I live and I think I have a solid cardiologist now.. which is awesome bc I guess I'll be needing heart surgery in the next 10 years or so. Honestly, I've thought about going to mexico, but I don't have anyone who would travel with me so that is kind of out. I would travel by myself but you can't do that. I do love traveling and wouldn't care to try the medical tourism because I feel like the insurance nonsense is so horrible. I've seen some amazing transformations (not bariatrics) from Japan and they take great pride in their work and you don't have to go for follow up after follow up like you do in the states. I'm on the hook for $900 for pre-op testing.. which sucks because I thought my insurance would cover that.. but in the end, it's all for my health.
  14. My name is JC. I had LB surgery 10-15-10. I've only lost 12lbs. I see a counselor once a week. I'm wanting to join OA, but haven't made it to a meeting yet. I am reading the book & using the workbook. I work out 5 days a week, and 2 of those days with a personal trainer. I'm discouraged because I've read a lot of blogs etc of people who have lost many more pounds than me. I don't get it. What am I doing wrong?

    A long road...

I was expecting at least a week if not more based on all the insurance horror stories I've been reading here. I guess if you take the time to get all your ducks in a row things move more quickly. I think the key reason is that the PCP I've been using for the last 3 or 4 years has kept detailed notes of the progress and then the lack of progress of my attempts to lose weight. Interesting to read them myself, a true roller coaster experience for sure. BTW - do you use the lapband support group sessions that Abkin/Bertha offer? Are they worth while? Thinking of going to the 11/19 one to check it out. I'm not sure group meetings are for me as I'm an Internet type person but willing to try anything to help adjust to my new life ahead.

Hawaii here I come in a size 8!

Thank you!!! I have stalls all the time lol I'll bounce around the same couple pounds for a week or two then bam I lose 4 or 5 then stall again. I started tracking my weight through my fitness pal and found a pattern.. It's how I lose which took so much pressure off. I am sure you will have a blast in February. I have been losing around 10 pounds a month. I was a low bmi when I started so it's slow going but it's going try tracking to see approximately how much you are losing per month. I figured I would be 4 pounds less than I am now when I got to Hawaii so my tracking was pretty darn close!
  17. So excited we leave tomorrow morning for Oahu! My hubby and I are going for our 24th anniversary and packing my suitcase I was giddy with excitement! I tried on all my "dream" dresses (I bought 10 dresses a year ago hoping one day I could wear them. All a size 8) and I am going to toot my own horn here but I look fantastic lmao! My hubby is gonna freak when he sees me in them. I am 12 pounds from goal. Hoping I lose an inch to fit in my "dream" New Year's Eve dress I bought lol. I am so happy I revised from band to bypass! (I was successful with the band-lost 120 but was about 20 pounds heavier than I am now and could never get below that- it eroded so revised to bypass) I am 6 months out from my revision and 70 down (had to gain 50 to be eligible for the bypass ) have a wonderful day everyone and happy December!
  18. WOW, That is amazing! $10 for a hot dog lunch. Just kidding, congratulations on the amazing amount of walkingyou did and your NSVs.

    Scary

Yep, it is scary! But what is more scary is spending the rest of your life fighting with your weight and thinking you have failed! You will be uncomfortable for a while, but you can do this. I was sleeved in April and have lost 68 pounds so far. It is so much fun to shop for clothes now! I was a size 18-20 Women, and now can wear a size 10 jeans from the Gap. It is amazing. The health care providers will be certain that you are comfy- don't be afraid to ask for pain meds. You CAN do this. Be brave!.

    Pre-op diet started today 1/1/15

I am a week into my pre op diet and I am surprised how well my head is cooperating. I have been keeping busy and drinking A LOT of tea and water. Stay focused and keep your eye on the prize. I have lost 10 lb and I find my jeans aren't as tight (and I can breathe easier ). Just keep positive. This is only the beginning and I am sure there will be a few more hiccups along the way.
  22. Before the band, I used to sometimes measure time in terms of "pounds ago". 100 pounds ago was quite a while ago, high school years. 60 pounds ago would be more recent, about when I was 19 and 20. 40 pounds ago I met my husband. Twenty pounds ago I started to give up on losing that 20 pounds from 40 pounds ago. Now that I have the band, I suppose I could try it in the opposite sense. It is sort of strange in a way, having my linear sense of time disrupted. Maybe its a good reminder that life and time really are cyclical. Now I can say that 40 pounds ago I had weight loss surgery and was waiting to see if I got into grad school. 10-15 pounds ago, I found out I got in. Hmm... I've also been working on my rules for when to not follow the rules. Normally there is a stage in every diet for me, when "just this once" starts to happen more and more frequently until its always just this once and I think we all know that it is pretty downhill from there. ) So I have my rules on when there can be no rules. If it doesn't fit in here, then sorry, I have to be good: 1) My birthday; whole day is a free for all (if my birthday is "missed" due to illness I may reschedule for a later date. 2) Celebration dinners (and no, everyday cannot be a celebration) 3) Christmas, New years eve, the eight major pagan holidays, and maybe a couple other holidays I specify in advance. 4) Cinco de Mayo. Its mexican food and margaritta goodness. 5) the times I order movie theater popcorn so long as these times do not exceed 8 times per year and the bucket never exceeds a medium (probably won't be bigger than a small). I get soda on those days too. 6) vacation If its not on that list, then its not allowed to be a free for all. Naturally, I reserve the right to revise my list, but I think this is a good starting one.
  23. A new artificial sweetener is about to hit the market called Dolcia Prima. "Dolce" means sweet in Italian; and Prima means "first." The chemical name of this sweetener is allulose (also D-Psicose), and it’s totally natural, albeit rare. Small amounts of it may be found in figs and raisins for example. Allulose is 70% as sweet as table sugar, but contains just a 10% of the calories of processed sugar. Allulose has a taste profile that closely matches sugar, with an almost identical perception of sweetness over time. Allulose is not metabolized by the digestive system and therefore its effective calorie value is so low. It can be used in baking which is one of the problems with aspartame (it loses its sweetness when it is heated). Allulose can provide desirable browning when baking and also adds bulk and texture like sugar. Currently the product is sold as a syrup.

    Banded 3/16/2011

giogirl I've only been banded for 10 days and I'm well into mushy foods. I lost 10 lbs on the liquid diet and just recently lost another 2 while eating semi-solids. I started back in the gym a few days ago on the eliptical machine. As soon as I started back in the gym I noticed that I have gained the 2 lbs I lost . I contacted my dietician and she informed me that I am not consuming enough calories to sustain myself. I would burn 400 cals in the gym and only eat a total of 800 calories in a day meaning I only gave my body 400 calories to live on. I've up'd my calorie intake to at least 1200 calories a day when I hit the gym this gives my body around 800 to 900 calories to live on. If you do not take in enough calories your body will naturally fight to save your life by retaining every calorie you consume for energy to stay alive. It will store those calories, fat, sugars and everything else if it thinks you are starving to death. You can easily put yourself in stavation mode if youre not careful (especially on the immediate post op diets we have to stick to) This is just my two cents but when I weigh in at the doc's office tomorrow I hope to see that I have lost and not gained becasue of the changes my dietician suggested. Hope this helps. Todd
  25. Hi all....I am scheduled for my orientation meeting on 2/7 and am very excited....however, I do have some questions. My BMI is 36 so I am not at the "40" mark, so what constitutes a "comorbidity"? I have dangerously high Cholesterol and Triglycerides (336 and over 900, respectively, altho I think the high triglyceride level was due to my latest failed Atkins attempt).:frown: I have gastric reflux and possibly sleep apnea as I wake up 2-3 morning per week with a migraine (I am sure I'll be scheduled for a sleep study). Also my back, knees and feet hurt so bad I can barely get around in the morning and am having a hard time staying on my feet for long hours at work. So what ARE the comorbidities? And another question.....if my BMI is 36 now and Dr Gluck puts me on the required 10 day liquid pre-op diet and I lose weight with that will I still be eligible for surgery if my BMI drops below 35? Or does qualification only depend on the BMI at time of referral? Oh, I have so many questions! I sure hope I qualify.....I have been down every blasted diet road there is and want to be around to see my daughter grow up, but I am scared because I am 46 and 50 seems to be the magic number for heart attacks in my family.......
