    ABC '06 ~ February Chat

Jamie...I've given up on breakfast and I usually eat a pretty soft lunch. Usually by dinner I'm fine. Protein shakes...protein powder, yogurt, fresh fruit...are a great breakfast. You get used to it. By the way....isn't it March? Shouldn't we have a new thread? LOL!
  2. Ooh how I envy you that! That is almost like a Cleopatra Couch, I need me one of them! Bring me a grape, gently peeled! And maybe some of that lucious Greek Yogurt you're holding!
  3. Well your last appointment was a week ago. Most doctors say you can loose 1-2 pounds per week. If you've lost 2 pounds that's really good. You mentioned full liquids. My doctor said full liquids was tomato or squash soup. The Proteins shakes should not have fruit if you are on full liquids. That would be mushies. Yogurt is also a mushie not a full liquid. Protein shakes: What is the serving size of your shakes (how many scoops do they call for?)? Mine says one scoop. Your powder should be about 24 g of protein for less then 120 cals. When adding pudding powder I did 1-2 tablespoons. A whole package seems like a lot. During full liquids I made mine with 3/4 cup fat free milk and 2 "milk cubes" (frozen fat free milk). Lunch- Pudding is not a full liquid it is a mushie and does not have any protein. As I mentioned earlier yogurt is not a liquid but a mushie. Call the doctor's office and ask about the yogurt. If you can have it at this point I recommend Greek yogurt as it has twice the protein and regular yogurt. During Mushie stage I used a hand blender to mince the fruit. I do add splendra since Greek yogurt is sour. I would definately have protein at each meal. Seems like you are having your protein mostly at breafast and dinner. Here is how I ate during liquid phase Breakfast Tomato soup (added Mrs Dash unsalted chicken flavor spice before heating) Wait as long as possible and have a Protein shake, made with milk (no fruit) lunch Smooth soup Tomato or squash, carrot shake Dinner Same During mushies same plan start with soup and then eat the protein mushie later.

    traumatized by puréed

I was also traumatized by the pureed stage! So glad to know I wasn't alone. I did read a comment that said "Don't forget about cottage cheese!" I'd rather eat pureed chicken. And that ain't happening. I am just a little over 2 months out from my gastric bypass. I am still having quite a bit of trouble swallowing, quite frankly, most meats. I have had most success with very thinly shaved deli ham and turkey. I know I'm supposed to be eating 60-90 grams of protein each day, but I'm not getting it from meat. Fortunately, I love the high-protein Greek yogurt. It is saving my life right now.

    traumatized by puréed

I never pureed any thing either. The thought does gross me out. I ate alot of Greek yogurt with unsweetened cocoa or with blended fruits, hummus with homemade cheese crisps, soft cheeses, cottage cheese with tajin seasoning (yum), tofu, nut butters, avocados... Etc

Stop drinking shakes and eat food. Shakes should only be used in the first couple of months after that they should go out the door. I eat 90 to 120 grams of protein a day, 60 grams of carbs, not much fat maybe 30 grams if that. I try to stay under 30 for sugar. Those shakes are killing your diet. You should only be eating food now. If you are too tight in the morning eat greek yogurt. Eat more then three times a day. I eat every couple of hours. Something is always going in my mouth. I just dont eat crap. I snack on grape tomatoes and other low calorie veggies. Lentils are good protein but also a lot of carbs. You are not eating enough protein without shakes. Drinking calories does not help you.

    Full Liquid Question

My doctor allowed yogurt as long as there were no chunks on full liquids. I also had a lot of cream of broccoli that I pureed so there were no solids, and cream of potato. I would steam more broccoli and cauliflower and add a little milk/broth to the soups and puree also sometimes... just thought it was more veggie nutrition.. it worked. Nothing ever came up for me.
  8. This is the almighty spoon I used to shovel food into my mouth with before and now I use my two year old's spoon to eat my yogurt. It just makes me laugh. I can't wait for my body to resemble the skinny spoon! hahahaha
  9. Hey everyone! I was banded on Wednesday, so today I am 3 days post op. Since the surgery, I have had a constant tightness in my chest and back, and if I walk for too long, I end up having to take a painkiller. I keep telling myself it's just gas, but my surgeon said that should have stopped by day two. If that's the case, what the heck is this horrible "tight" feeling? Another problem I am having is I don't know when I am full. I am on a full liquid diet, and it seems like I can drink and drink and drink, and never get that full feeling. I am drinking soups, yogurts, jellos etc, shouldn't that be filling me up? Ok one more question! My surgeon told me he fixed my hiatal hernia that was causing my heartburn, so does that mean that eventually I wont have to take protonix anymore? I'm still really sore, and the pain in my back is almost overwhelming. I have been sitting down for an hour now, and I can still feel it. I just wish I knew what it was. My surgeon seems like somewhat of a jerk, as he laughed at my questions after I got out of surgery. I wanted to say, "well if you had told me these things beforehand, I wouldn't have to ask you now." There are just some things that make me nervous about my surgeon 1) He says I can take all my pills (9 total) at the same time and not have to worry about anything. Some of them are horse sized and he said I don't even have to break them in half. 2) He has had me on a full liquid diet from day 1, not low fat, not sugar free, but a FULL whatever I want liquid diet. 3) I told him I was having gas pains still yesterday, and he acted like I was exaggerating, and told me they should have been gone already. Didn't want to send me home with painkillers either! 4) My stomach is still incredibly swollen. I look like I swallowed a watermelon vertically. I'm fat to begin with, but this is crazy, I don't even fit in comfy pants, LOL, I look like an obese, pregnant person who swallowed a watermelon. I would just feel a WHOLE lot better knowing that someone else has experienced these things, and if not, I'd like to know that too so I can hunt down my surgeon and make him give me some answers! Thanks is advance to you all, I really appreciate it!
  10. It seems like every doctor has a different plan with regard to easing people back into food. This is the plan from my nutritionist... 2 weeks post op...Protein shakes only 3 weeks post op Phase 1 Eating...soft Protein such as cottage cheese, yogurt, Beans, lunch meats, regular cheese, tuna, eggs 4 weeks post op Phase 2 Eating...adding in fruits and veggies 6 weeks post op Phase 3 Eating...adding in harder Proteins such as chicken breast, steaks, etc 8 weeks post op Phase 4 Eating...adding in carbs such as bread, starchy veggies etc

Option For Full Liquid Stage (Post-Op)

I just saw this on my Facebook page, and reading through it, I thought it sounded pretty good (being a mushroom lover) and a way to sneak in some extra Protein through the greek yogurt addition. Thoughts? Mushroom Bisque
  12. I had my surgery 7/10 and am traveling for work. Thankfully I was able to acquire some protein shakes and triple zero yogurt but man was it a pain to track down. Does anyone have any travel tips and tricks to make sure you’re getting enough protein, hydration, and able to take all the post ops meds and vitamins?
  13. It just isn't moving like I thought. Surgery weight 266, current weight 237, almost 30lbs, about a week out from 3 months. It's going so slow 😭. So I've recently upped my water and my cardio (doing 40 min a day 5 times a week) eating less than 800 a day, usually around 700, sometimes give or take. Always less than 25 net carbs for the day. I've only lost 3 lbs this month. Any advice? I'm really eating pretty right, 90% protein the rest veggies, yogurt, string cheese, making good choices. Maybe calories need to go back to 500?
  14. Scrambled eggs, yogurt, smashed beans, soft [emoji311] fish. Cottage cheese with soft fruit. Sofar that's what my friends eating. Sent from my LG-K540 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Check your Protein powders. I had violent diahrea from around day 10 post op. I discovered that the Protein powder that I was using was the culprit. I had to switch to Muscle Milk Light in the ready to drink because it was lactose free. After a few weeks I was able to tolerate the Optimum Nutrition powder again. I still used unsweetened soymilk or almond milk. I do fine with yogurt, cheese etc. Good luck!

    New Premier Protein flavor!!!!

BTW, it was pretty delish mixed with Greek yogurt to make "yogurt soup."
  17. find some soups that you like now, and save for phase 2. i was Clear liquids only for 3 days then went to full liquids which includes strained soups, cream soups, yogurt, pudding. since every program is different, it may be hard to make recommendations. i wish somebody had told me to get some phase 2 soups so i wouldn't have had to venture out to the store 4 days post op with a drain and feeling tired to get stuff. however NOW, 13 days post i feel awesome and looking for reasons to go out! if you are clear liquids only for 2 whole weeks, i would recommend you MAKE some chicken stock, beef stock and veg stock that you like. i couldn't find any chicken broths i cared for so i made my own right before surgery so i would have it.
  18. I kept mine a secret until the last minute when my surgery got scheduled. I was on a 2 week mandatory liquid diet and did 1 extra week on my own. I ate a lot of soup, Jello and yogurt with no fruit. It was not that un-normal of food to eat for lunch so not much explanation was needed. But having kept it a secret and now being banded on 4/2/09 I sort of wish I had said something sooner- I lost 16lbs on my pre=op and that put me on a cloud- I just wanted to shout to the world but couldnt cuz i didnt say anything..... That is 1 thing pre-op i would change.... lisa
  19. I opted not to tell anyone but my immediate family and 2 close friends. The girls in my office and I are all very close. its been 7 weeks now and surprisingly no one has really noticed. I've heard people don't usually start noticing until 50 or 60 lbs. I've lost 25 lbs thus far. I was on liquids only 1 day back at work (I took 1 week off). I knew I wasn't going to tell anyone so I started with "the story" early. When I went to my first appt they gave me all the handouts with the various lifestyle changes I would need to make. One of them was soda - so after my first appt - about 4 months before surgery - I stopped drinking soda. So by the time of the surgery it was already in place. The week before surgery - I did encourage a health kick in my office where we all stopped eating out and began sharing meals. So I had an excuse to bring in all my yogurt and V8 etc and stock our fridge. Basically I tried to phase things in over time so all these strange changes in my eating habits did not happen all at once and draw attention. My co-workers did find it odd when I started bringing Protein drinks to work - but I just told them my doc said I needed to get more protein in my diet (which was true) and, extra bonus, that it promotes weight loss. Since the surgery there is a girl in my office who is trying to watch her weight - I've been splitting things with her. She loves the fact that I'm helping HER out. There have been a couple of times when its been said "you hardly ate anything" - my excuse is that I ate something right before, or I had a big Breakfast, or didn't really like the food. I don't wanna to tell more people - sometimes I feel myself bursting at the seams wanting to tell. But I don't want it to get around the whole office. I want to see some dramatic weight loss before I share - fear of failure I guess. Whatever your decision - good luck!
  20. we are all going to be able to fit different amounts in our sleeves due to the fact that different docs use different bougie sizes. on top of that the docs only change the width of our stomachs, not the length....and everybody has a different length. so that being said...i would definatly measure all of the food first for a while, till you get used to how much makes you feel satisfied and not full. as for me I have noticed that if I am eating meat I get fuller with way less vs eating cottage cheese or yogurt. take it slow and listen to your sleeve....lol.....it will let you know if you are eating to much good luck!
  21. Why cheese? If you are going to eat dairy, IMO yogurt is a healthier choice. And why fruit instead of green veggies? Green veggies are much lower carb. All that said, losing 1 kg in a week is great IMO. Does your bariatric team have a specific goal that you must meet? It sounds like it, from your post, but personally I think expecting more than 1 kg/week is a high and kind of cruel standard.

    Eating Fast

6 months out and I get what I can eat fast and what needs to be slow...if I eat chicken breast fast without chewing like 46 rimes, I will vomit. In turn, I can eat end,ess amount of yogurt or cottage cheese with no problem. I think the more fibrous or dry the protein is, you really have to eat it slow. Tuna salad on crackers, I can move pretty quickly through, I dont get sick, but Ido get the gurgles for an hour
  23. Im so frusterated im on my 3rd week out from surgery, The first week I got on the scale and was exstatic to see that i lost 9.6 lbs. the second week I got on the scale and was a little disapointed to see a 2.6 lb loss im in the middle of my third week now and weighed myself tonight (my official weigh ins are every friday but i just was curious) and i actually gained 2 lbs. I feel so frusterated, i knew that i would stall like almost everyone else does but i wasnt expecting it so soon, nor was i expecting to gain weight. I feel so embarassed my mom who paid for my surgery is coming to visit me tomorrow and she hasnt seen my since before the surgery she hasnt said anytthing but i know that shes expecting to see me noticably skinner, i feel like im failing myself and my family. Im just sitting here telling myself that this whole thing was too good to be true and im just going to stay this way forever. I cant stop crying im so mad at myself. I know everyone says oh dont worry it will come off but i just feel convinced that its just not guna work for me. I am getting in all my protein Im drinking all my water im going to the gym Today for example I had 2 oz of yogurt for breakfast a couple bites of chicken for lunch and a few more bites of chicken for dinner. and then a protien drink. I dont feel like im eating too much I just dont know what im doing wrong or if im just supposed to be in this body forever. I feel like im letting everyone down and im so depressed any advice?

    4/7/09 Bull Market

I started some shopping for pre and post Op yesterday and came home with bags full. I don’t have a pre-op diet, but I’ve decided to do a self-imposed one. I’m drinking protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and then a healthy high protein dinner. According to my NUT and surgeon I’m not supposed to drink protein shakes, EVER, as they are a slider food and go against the bandster rules of eating solid protein. I’m totally on board with that and actually love that their lifetime diet is exactly what I was looking for, healthy food, just a lot less of it…like I keep saying when I see bandsters still drinking several of these shakes daily years out, if I wanted to be on a protein drink diet, then I would have done that, not the band (one of my sisters did this, so did Oprah…they both gained it back). I don’t expect to use protein shakes very often at all, maybe after fills, but I thought it can’t hurt to do this pre-op and I can gather a list of the ones I like. I looked online but soon realized to compare apples to apples was going to take some work on my part. So, I did what I always do, I made a list. The confusing part is if you’re concerned with carbs. With the powdered shakes you need to figure out the grams (they only list percentages) of what is added add to it…like skim milk. Skim milk isn’t low carb, so these powdered ones can quickly become a high carb as well as high protein drink once you add the milk (ie. Unjury). Yeah, you could add water, but bleeech! I bought an assortment to try locally. Some I’ve found hard to find in the stores (ie. low carb Slim Fast). I quickly decided I don’t like the pre-made ones in cans…they have a metallic taste to me (ie. Target Brand). The low carb ones in cardboard cartons haven’t been too bad (ie. Atkins, EAS). You can even buy some powders in huge concrete bags amounts (better be sure you like it first)... I’m back to the stores today (once the snow stops, yes I said snow, several inches...is it April?!) for some low sugar/SF (ie. preserves for yogurt) and low fat/FF items (ie. Refried Beans) to have on hand as well as the GasX and other items suggested post-op. If you have any favorite items, let me know…and if anyone knows where I can get the big containers of plain 0% or 2% Fage Greek Yogurt north of Pittsburgh, I’m offering a reward (my eternal thanks). Product Placement/Marketing?! (that Special Dark Hershey bar is calling my name)...
  25. Yes, I am on day 5 of an all liquid Protein diet. I can have Protein shakes, Jello, broth, crystal light & yogurt smothies. The first couple of days I did alright except for a bad headache which I attributed to stopping my beloved Diet Pepsi cold turkey. I am not diabetic but I do have Insulin Resistance. At day 5 my headaches aren't so bad but none of the allowable liquids are stopping the hunger pangs. Yesterday afternoon I went out to Lowes with hubby and had to sit down...I suddenly felt so dizzy, nauseous, clammy and my brain stayed pretty fuzzy until I went to bed. And as the day wears on I get so tired of the hunger pains that I am irritable. I have ten more days to go pre-op then I will be on about the same diet for another 14 days post-op, hopefully after surgery things will be a little easier.
