great post. welcome. unfortunately, even in a forum designated for men with a sticky post telling women not to be here, they swarm here anyway like flies. so rude and disrespectful. and then they go “waaah, i didn’t know! “ - even girl members here for years with thousands of posts say this. funny, as men wouldn’t be caught dead in the Women’s Forum. somehow, we can keep all these tricky sub forums straight! pretty good for us big, dumb lugs! anyway, good luck to you bro. you will figure everything out. bc i can tell you’re an intelligent dude and the weight loss happens slow enough to give you time to adjust mentally. it’s only women who b***h about “i’m losing weight too fast! “. imagine that, women finding something to complain about. even when it comes to this miraculous, life-saving surgery.

Appetite suddenly gone almost 3months out.
hmills653 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 3 months and get hungry and no problem eating. I try to stay under 1000 calories. I was struggling with lots of hunger and only getting in around 500 cal the first 6 weeks but not really after that. I would eat even if not hungry bc you need to meet your nutritional needs with protein and vegetables of you can't get anything else in. -
Advice On Insurance, Surgeons & Facilities for Newbie
Taylor5 replied to Taylor5's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Diana_in_Philly, Thanks for the info - we were actually just notified by IBC that we are no longer in their coverage area now that we moved from Chester County to Berks Co, but since they took so long to tell us we still have to wait for open enrollment. Looks like we will be going with Capital Blue Cross, which stipulates it is a non-covered service "unless medically necessary". All other plans through our broker and on open marketplace for individuals or families do not cover it at all. You have to be on an employer paid ins. plan (with 50 or more employees, I believe, bc we are self-employed and looked at small business plans as well and none of them covered it) and your employer has to choose the option to cover it. I was completely baffled that I did not have the option to add the coverage to my insane premiums which are already more than my mortgage, but apparently in PA that's the breaks. So, now I will be further investigating how "medically necessary" their medically necessary means for the new plan. If that doesn't pan out, possibly some sort of financing, but seems a little out of reach at this point. Also currently battling severe chronic back/other pain right now and am having to consider spinal fusion surgery, which I don't want to do - especially when I know recovery will be much more likely to have a good result if I am closer to my healthy weight, but since I don't know if I can get the WLS yet I may have to do the back surgery first (I've already had 3, but this is the most invasive by far). Anyway, thank you again for sharing your hospital info. All my current docs are HUP-affiliated in the suburban hospitals they took over, but downtown is definitely the way to go if you can do the commute. Congrats on your success so far. Looks like you've come a long way : ) -
Im a mom so the complications of surgery always scared me. Thats why i opted for the sleeve..bc it has very little complications. I put it off for long enough and came to a realization that i cant loose all this weight on my own. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Medical Weight loss req. 1st pre-op
OutsideMatchInside replied to ert08's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I would switch programs. It sounds like some BS. They know people have issues with food and losing weight. They put you in this program, probably hoping you fail, then they string you along buying their food with surgery as a carrot on the stick at the end. I would never choose one of these programs that are selling you food and tell you that you have to lose X to qualify for surgery. They just milk people for money. -

Mommys/ Breastfeeders post-op?
Sullie06 replied to alyssa_vsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have help with the breastfeeding as my children were formula fed. I have a 2 and 4 year old so I know how tiring it can be taking care of kids post surgery. Mine were 1 and 3 when I had my surgery. The hardest part for sure was feeding my kids when I was on the liquid-pureed diet but it does get easier. We joke now that my kids eat larger portions than me but they love their new, more active mommy. -
This is such truth. I spent so much time worrying about my Macro percentages I had started choosing foods based on this alone. Homestly I think if we just eat a varied diet of whole unprocessed food mostly plants we will hit most if not all of our needed nutrients. If you are going to include a small amount of meat make sure it is grass fed pastured and both humanly and sustainably raised. I will still take some supplements because with a small stomach they will likely still be needed in some quantity. I will let my blood work determine that.

I have just finished Michael Pollans book The Omnivore's Dilemma. It was a very good look at the different food industries in this country. It wasn't very scientific, but more about his journey to see where his food was coming from. He visited a food lot in Kanas where beef cattle are fed a steady diet of corn and rendered animal parts while standing knee deep in their own waste. It was more of a philosophical journey he was taking and his trying to decide if he could morally continue to eat meat. I enjoyed the book and it opened my eyes to the many ways that the SAD has turned into a diet of mostly corn products. Those who still eat a lot of processed foods and supermarket meats are basically eating a bunch of processed corn. It is no wonder this country has such high rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Sure, all those myth debunking statements SOUND nice.. but how do we actually put any of it into practice? We are so fortunate that we live in an era/area in which people can expect to live 70+ years. Grocery stores are FULL of foods of every sort. Before about 1910, people only lived about half as long, and food availability was spotty, at best. We ate what was available, when available, and were happy for it. Only in times if abundance do we stop to ask, "what SHOULD I eat?" With only 100 years of science actively asking this question, it's no wonder we haven't gotten it all figured out yet. People get impatient with the process ("but they keep changing their story! First cholesterol is bad, now it doesn't matter!" etc.) But no one seems to realize that scientists are working with brand new data, trying to sort through it, and with additional new data coming in all the time, of course the picture always changes. Pollan is recommending to cut off the science from dinner decisions, and that's fair. Let the scientists do their thing while you eat what YOU want to eat. I do disagree that we needn't count or pay attention. Our food sources are the furthest thing from "natural" as one can get. Doesn't matter that much if you are eating an artificial-sugar laden protein bar or a modern cut of corn-fed beef or skim milk or ear of sweet corn. Everything we eat has been highly modified from what it would have been 1000 years ago. And, don't forget, even if we did eat the same way as our ancestors.. they only lived for 40 years. Maybe that wasn't such a great time either! Human beings are wonderfully adaptive. We can eat almost anything and do quite well... as a species. Individually, we do see lots of instances of malnutrition pop up. Personally I've been short on vit. A and D. Others on this board are short on protein and iron. My MIL is short on Vit. D and Iron. My hubby has low vit. D and low HDL cholesterol. In fact, I'd love to hear from anyone inside or outside the bariatric community that has had all their levels tested and weren't short on anything, and didn't take supplements. THOSE are the people whose diets we should all follow! Lol! (Doctors don't test healthy people for most vitamins, so that individual might be hard to find).

Hello! I'm 2 weeks post op with a 4 month old baby girl and an almost 3 year old boy. My 4 month old was exclusively breast fed up until the day of surgery. I tried to pump and dump after surgery until I was completely off medications (1 week) BUT got lazy and did not keep up, thus my supply went down! My baby is being supplemented with formula as I'm desperately trying to get my supply back up to what it used to be. Right now she only breastfeeds at night but I'm hoping we can go back to being ebf soon. Anyways, being a mom of a baby and toddler and just having had surgery has been hard. Not only keeping up with them and all their needs, but the fact that I still need to cook real food for my toddler and not be tempted to eat any of his leftovers like I used to! On the plus side though, my baby and I will be experimenting with pureed foods at the same time so that kills 2 birds with one stone. Thats sort of my story, hoping to hear from more mommys! ***Before anyone makes any judgements or tries to give medical advice, I have done extensive research and have spoken directly with my doctors about breastfeeding post op and they have given me their approval to continue doing so... So thank you for any of your concerns, but they are unwarranted!*** Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app

Hello I'm 26yrs old and I had the sleeve done on Aug 29, 2017... when I started this journey i weighed 299lbs and now I am 250lbs My surgery went great and I stuck to my diet my Dr told me. I'm to the point where I can eat pureed and soft foods. I get full very quickly but 2 hrs later I'm hungry again. Like my stomach makes the craziest noises and has that empty feeling. I been sticking to high protein and either very little sugar (6g at the most) or none at all if possible. I even been taking my adipex again thinkin it will help. I am to the point where I'm just not losing anything now. I'm very stressed out about it bc I don't want this to be it. I been working hard and seeing that I'm fluctuating between 249 to 252. Is there anything I can do to help lower the numbers again? I do work out and I'm always on my feet at work being that I'm a hairstylist in a busy area. I just don't know if how I'm feeling is normal and if I'm supposed to be eating like this. I can really use a mentor to help me succeed and do the right things. August Sleevers-How are you doing??
Allie589 replied to Ash_Bri85's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That totally happens to me to, especially with chicken, and I only eat it super moist. Sometimes I wonder if my esophagus is too tight from my hernia repair and I need to get it dilated. I'm nervous to go see my surgeon bc I think he will just say, "you're eating too fast or taking too big of bites." I am trying to be super conscientious with my eating so if I do need to go talk to him, I can be sure it isn't "user error." 5'7 Sleeved 8/7 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: 226 At 5 weeks post op GW: 150 -

My old life
LittleLizzieLilliput replied to JoyandLight's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The more weight you lose the less you miss your old life. What you are missing is some of the self-soothing things we did to make ourselves feel better, and the social interaction that comes with drinking and eating pub-food. But there is a trade off. Your health and life in exchange for beer and cheese. lol! Now I smoke weed rather than drink. Now I drink water when my friends are eating. But I'm still hilarious and don't need to be eating to have fun. It took me a while before I found my stride on that one. Life will resume for you, we find our new Normal. And it's surprisingly easy!! I totally understand missing your old life style!! That is where we found our comfort, where we soothed ourselves with food and fed our souls with fried stuff. lol! Or I did at least. It took me a good 3 months to find my New Normal. Some emotional ups and downs. But it's all so worth it!! Well, for me it is. Wearing a size 10 jeans, getting hit on by men of all ages, sitting in any seat I want regardless of ease or access, riding roller coasters, flying without fear, walking past windows but not ashamed of who I see, Joy...so much joy!! All those things are infinitely better and make me so much happier than me being able to eat a whole bloomin' onion in one sitting. There are trade offs. We lost our coping mechanism that was food, so our emotions and feelings are gonna be rough for a little while. Talking with a therapist is a good idea. Many of us are food addicts in one form or another, so there will be a psychological sense of loss, regret and fear for some of us. I was one. I cried for a week straight. (I'll give myself a little break here and admit that I had been deathly ill for 8 months prior to my surgery so I was drained emotionally and physically by the time I had my surgery. So my crying for a week had some additional ammo behind it besides not getting to binge on food. lol! Anyway, Just keep at it, you are doing great! And use us as your support! It's OK to have these feelings and to struggle with what we've done. But also keep focusing on your goals. The more you workout and can move more, the greater you will feel! -
September Sleevers- How are you feeling??
shanicebarry replied to Ash_Bri85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 9/12. I have been doing well. I'm supposed to be on liquids, but I was feeling extremely weak, so I had some cream of wheat. I'm not having any issues getting foods down, and I don't feel sick afterwards, I have been loosing weight since surgery I lost 4lbs, bc the gas had to leave my system. With preop diet and surgery thus far I've lost 18 lbs. I'm not upset at how my weight is dropping I just want to work out honestly. I try to walk a lot during the day bc I love to exercise. I'm sure my doc will be mad that I advanced myself on soft foods 1 week early, but I need the energy. I go back to work tomorrow and everything has healed well for me. I'll try to eat healthier soft foods like non fat Greek yogurt tomorrow. But as for now all is well. I'm a very active person so I want to make sure that my metabolism can keep up with me. My stats are below. First visit: 245 lbs Before preop diet: 236 lbs After preop: 225 lbs Cw: 218 lbs -
I had the worst experience this weekend... Friday my brother and mother talked me into riding a ride at the fair that i did not want to ride... i got up in the chair and they could not latch the harness... bc I am too fat. I knew it b4 i got up there but it is so much worse when u have proof... I cannot wait for the day when stuff like that no longer happens... silver lining is that i have new motivation to stick to it.,

We have a Six Flags fairly close to us and my family has always had season passes, so my kids could go. I would just walk around because I haven't been able to fit on a Roller Coaster since 1999. It has always been my goal through every incarnation of weight loss attempts. My vsg was 10/26. I tried to ride the Batman two weeks before Christmas...no go. I was so defeated. The good news is that I have been on that mo fo at least 10 times this summer. Your time is coming.

Aww, sorry that happened. I haven't been on rides for years because I was so afraid thats what would happen. Someday, you will go back there and ride with no fear and replace that awful memory.

I had my surgery on 8/14/17. I am a type 2 diabetic and was told that 97% of patients finish surgery and no longer need medications. In the hospital for the two days after surgery, my blood sugar was normal. Once I got home, it skyrocketed back to 250-300. Before surgery I was on 2,000 mg of metformin and 10 mg of glyburide daily. Has anyone lose experienced this? I am getting fed up because I had the surgery specifically to help with my diabetes. My doctor said he has no idea why my body is being so resistant ... and now I really just want to cry. I've put myself back on metformin which keeps my levels in the lower 200 and I am going to see my primary doctor this week to see what else I should do... Anyone else have the surgery and have little to no improvement in glucose levels ?

enigma_007 replied to mzsantiago88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ive only told 3 of my sisters n mother. My mother only bc i will need her help post op..im recently divorced mother of 4. She will comment but she means well amd my sister help when she goes overboard. My sisters will be the ones to remind me why i had the surgery when im post op thinking i made a mistake and cant tolerate only liquads anymore. They are my rock. I didnt tell my brothers..as they would tell their wives and then their wives would tell their famies and so on. Only one of my sisters i didnt tell..although she would be supportive ..she would still have comments i just dont want to jear and she would tell her teenage duaghters n they would talk freely abt it to their friends...which go to the school i work at. I havent told any of my friends. I feel a support group is needed but at the same time many ppl dicredit the wieghtloss when surgery is used to help. This isnt the easy way out. We put our lives at risk when going under the knife bc we want to be healthier and nothing we have tried has helped.it is hard emotionally and mentally. And ur entire eating habits change. The surgey doesnt do that for u. U have to put the effort and resillience. Its sad that so many ppl have so much negative things to say abr something that has produced good results for ppl that have been suffering for so long. i guess the saying is true " they want to see you do good, just not better than them" Im still in the process of bieng approced for vsg. Good luck to u Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
My NUT recommended flavoring water with essential oils. I haven't yet bc I don't know which ones are "edible" but it sounds interesting.

Lap-Band to Mini Gastric Bypass Revision
sharon232 replied to knormlaver's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I also had the band back in 2007. It was the most popular option at the time and gastric bypass still had some hiccups. As a registered nurse I do alot of research before making a decision and that included the decision to transition into gastric bypass. I am going to be 67 years old and have struggled with dieting and weight issue as long as I can remember. The band worked well until I had to have the fluid released in 2016 when I had my breast reduction surgery. I love the outcome from a double G to a D and able to go braless relived much pain in my neck and shoulders. When the fluid had to be put back in it wasn't so easy. It took 4 months before I was at the same point as before the surgery but had problems with it. in the four months, I gained 22 lbs. I never found that sweet spot and had a lot of reflux. Finally deciding to go back to my surgeon this past March and had some testing done. I was found to have esophageal dysmotility. It is an irregular movement of the esophagus when eating related to the band and to age. I had the band removed April 24th. It was decided I was a good candidate for gastric roux y bypass but my surgeon waits 4-5 months before converting. So I spent the summer thinking I had my last meal and gained close to 40 lbs. My own doing and only has added to the weight I already had to lose and regret thinking in the way. I had to go through the requirements all over again, Psychiatry, nutritionist, cardiology, upper gi series, endoscopy. But those months also gave me the time to really soul search about this surgery as a good choice. I did a lot of research online and listened to over 100 youtube videos from people who had the surgery. The good, the bad the ugly. Not having a lot of years left to my life I would like to not be overweight for the rest of it. I've made this choice because it virtually eliminates reflux, gives me the best chance to get this weight off. I have 100 lbs to lose. Hopefully then to not be borderline diabetic, get rid of my cholesterol medication and high blood pressure medication. Living a healthy life for the rest of my life. Thank you for reading my story. I'm sure I am not unique to many other strugglers out there and how our society treats us so differently when we are overweight. I experience every single day. Is affected my business and my personal life profounding. I'm just done with it. I'm fed up of swollen feet at the end of the day and struggling to complete the stairs in our home.
