my personal little official thread
mousecat88 replied to mousecat88's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I took 2.5 weeks off work. I hope that is enough time because I was literally told I would be fired if I a) had any post-op complications or b) needed more than 2.5 weeks off work. Don't even ask... -

I'm having my sleeve in conjunction with a hiatal hernia repair, which I've been told is very common. I'd like to hear from folks who have had this combination, particularly about your recovery & pain afterward. I'm wondering if there are more complications or pain than without the hernia repair? Any issues?

SEPTEMBER 2018 SURGERIES AND SUCCESS
Frustr8 replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Did well with my cataract SURGERY- took a lot longer than eye#1, Dr Koehler told TOMKITTEN, my son, it was More Complicated than He Planned, probably needed it last year when. I had my Bariatric, went back Yesterday for my One Day AFTER appointment He told me my eyesight is now 20/20, don't think it was That Good even when I was a Mini-Frustr8, now once the intraocular swellings go down I May Be Able to read my paperback books once again. I have no trouble watching TV at all, now I only have to wear my eyepatch at night, out in public where I could get bumped or when there is dirt or dust blowing in the air. So GOOD PROGRESS there. Right arm is still distended and sore, much to tell at G Surgeon about THERE. And that is my Latest Update. Until my next Posting- Frustr8 Out! -
Large hiatal hernia discovered during gastric bypass surgery
RickM replied to Vikingfanaz10's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think that second opinions are always a good idea, particularly when revisions are involved as both the cause, or need for the revision as well as the surgery itself tend to be more complex than the original virgin procedure, and this is where different perspectives are useful. As with AZhiker above, my real question is why was the hernia a surprise? What kind of evaluation was done to determine that you need a revision, and that the RNY is the most appropriate course of action? Any kind of a problem with the sleeve, whether it be GERD or inadequate weight loss or regain - the most common problems - I would expect that an upper GI or EGD, or both, would be done to evaluate the condition of the sleeve and either would have shown the hernia. With lapband revisons, we often see some patients get two-stepped - remove the band and allow time to heal, then do the revision to VSG or RNY, but just as often it is all done in one procedure. Is the difference specific to the individual patients' situation, or the surgeon's experience and skills? I don't know, but it seems analogous to your situation where it may be that your case is particularly complicated and any surgeon would two-step it, or that the hernia repair combined with the revision is beyond the surgeon's comfort zone and someone else could have done it in one shot. What is the reason for your need for a revision? If it was for GERD, the hernia repair may well correct or improve it. Sometimes a simple resleeve can correct it if there are shaping issues with the sleeve (not uncommon with sleeves from early in the decade) though not all surgeons know how to do that. If it is a regain problem, what has been done to address the issue non-surgically (diet or head games) as overall the RNY isn't really any better at controlling regain than the VSG, and if the fundamental problem isn't addressed, it will happen again. A re-sleeving may do as well, or a revision to the duodenal switch would be a stronger response to that problem. Just more things to consider....(why can't things be easy?) Good luck... -
I agree with @catwoman7 ... I would only go to a very experienced ps who specialized in post massive WL surgeries. There are obviously risk of complications, but also if I'm going to spend thousands, I want to be confident I'll be happy with my results.

Usually if there are no complications: follow up appts happens in the 6th, 9th,12th (maybe 18th) month then usually yearly. In my experience the doctor visits are nearly as expensive as the labs if you need to do it out of pocket. That's when you'll likely need/want to shop around for the best price Good Luck 💚

Binge Eating: Sleeve to Bypass
PepperCat posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’m scared. I honestly didn’t think that insurance would approve me. I had sleeve in 2017. I was at 275 and my lowest went down to 150. But then I had chronic unexplained migraines daily and I sought out food for comfort. I gained 50 pounds back. My sleeve is completely stretched. Somehow I miraculously was approved for revision to bypass. I still am in shock that insurance approved. The thing is. I feel like a failure. I have bing eating disorder and even though I’m in therapy, it still consumes me. I am scared that I’ll fail at this second chance or that I’ll have complications. -

I hope as time goes on things will settle down health wise for you and become much, much easier. Wishing health and happiness for you... 💙 -

Remember that each of us starts in a different place. Even if we were to find someone the same age, gender, height,HW, and SW, you STILL wouldn’t be able to compare yourself because there are so many many complicated factors and biological systems involved with weight gain and weight loss. I guess about the only people who could compare themselves would be identical twins, and even that could be dangerous. As of today I’ve lost 88 pounds PO and my surgery was 2-6-19. I know many in my February group who’ve blown me out of the water in number of pounds lost, but I’m less than 4 pounds from GW and couldn’t be happier with my progress. My progress was “slow, and steady”, but I’m almost there. I won’t quite hit GW by Saturday, and the story of this entire process for me has been falling short of monthly weight loss goals (I think in the 8 months PO, I’ve only hit a goal on time just ONCE) but I’m going to keep plugging away and working the plan. Guys, this is a marathon, not a sprint bc it is something that will have to be managed for the REST OF OUR LIVES.

I am so sorry that you're experiencing such difficulties. I hope it all gets better soon. Even with complications (nowhere near as bad as yours), I'd do this again in a heartbeat. 50 years' worth of loss/regain was enough to tell me that I was never going to get to a normal weight on my own. -

My PCP won't support my decision to have the surgery in Mexico
ldawn replied to Tralynn222's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had my surgery in the US because my insurance covered it. If it hadn’t I would have gone to Mexico. I’m a nurse practitioner. In 2017 2 of our office staff went to Mexico for the sleeve. The physician we worked for went with them to check it out and learn more about their program. She was impressed and very comfortable with the facility, the surgeons, and process. The ladies have both done excellent. We also have had several patients go to the same place and they have all done well. We have a patient who had surgery by Dr Nowzardan and that has been a nightmare recovery. Complications can happen anywhere. You can easily find a doctor who will watch out for you. You May find you like that doctor better. -
Gastric bypass or sleeve
Azlanie replied to laura071693's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Research both options. You have to be honest with WHY you are having this surgery. I went with sleeve for two reasons - I was a chronic over eater and never felt "full" enough after a meal, so I crammed more into my mouth, and I wanted to avoid more long term complications. My surgeon was extremely thorough when he was going over the options (Bypass, SIPS, and Sleeve). He said that he recommends the sleeve for all patients unless there is something intrinsically wrong with anatomy or another major concern (I do not remember them all, do not want to misrepresent why I made the choice I did). The surgery is easier on the body (no complete rerouting of your plumbing) and when guidelines are followed the difference in weight loss is less than 5%. Most people that have complications have them within the first three to six months. Complications with bypass can occur even years out. There is no malaborption, but a vitamin is mandatory with both procedures. No matter what decision you make, be sure that you are thinking about your future - your long term goals, and how this surgery will change your life! No matter what you decide you will be happier and healthier for it if you follow the rules =D -
I have the sleeve in 2013. Everything was going well. My weight before surgery was 275. I went down to 170. Then in 2015 I fractured a couple of bones in my foot. It required surgery. And now I have screws permanently in my foot to keep the bones from shifting. I went over 6 months without being able to walk due to complications. And unfortunately I started to gain the weight back. I’m so disappointed at myself. I have losing the weight I gained (I’m currently 215). However, nothing I do is working. Working out is difficult since I have screws in my foot. My foot swells and causes me a lot of pain. Plus, my asthma is really bad since I have regained my weight. I want to get a revision as soon as possible. I was wondering what is the process for revision and how long does it take for the insurance to approve revision surgery? What is the best revision to do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Lap-Band to Bypass Revision w/Insurance
JohnnyMadison replied to Lauren87's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm in Wisconsin and can only speak to my experience for VSG>RNY revision insurance approval. I had really bad GERD and my endoscopies showed Barrett's. So Blue Shield (my employer is in CA) approved it immediately for GERD and did not impose any pre-operative requirements such as monitored weight loss, etc. So my recommendation would be to pursue it for complications and not WLS if you want a quick approval. -
Liver problems 1 year after Sleeve
ValerieInMexico replied to laura1116's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was part of a research study, while on a medically supervised weight loss program with optifast. this was in the 1990s, long before I had bariatric surgery. It is not the surgery that causes the problem. It is the rapid weightloss. People who loose large amounts of fat, over a relatively short period of time, can have complications with gallbladders. So, it could be prudent to remove it while having weight loss surgery to avoid having to have another surgery. -
About a decade ago, when I had lost what I thought was a good amount of weight, there was an online group (do not remember it) where you could post sizes and pics of clothes you had and them arrange to swap/send to someone else. Usually whomever was receiving the clothes paid for shipping and sometimes if the item was dressy/expensive/with tags, you would work out an acceptable arrangement with that person. Likewise, as I lost weight, I posted my clothes and arranged for new homes. I realize this sounds maybe complicated but it was vastly easy at the time. Perhaps I had more energy? I don't see anything like this these days. I'm not a big FB person but I guess that might be the likeliest place for something like this to be done..especially if it is centered in your own 'local area'... Just thinking/writing out loud, I guess..
