    May Surgery Buddies

I didn’t go #2 for 10 days after my surgery. I actually gained 4 lbs the week after surgery between it fluids and constipation…then dropped it all plus 10lbs the next week. It will come off!!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi- I was sleeves 4/19 and I don’t have issues eating or drinking. Do you have restrictions when trying to eat or drink most things? Getting full too quickly or sick? What happens when you have a protein shake?

    May Surgery Buddies

Hi, had VSG on 5/10. Didn't feel horrible afterwards but I think the lack of sleep made me feel worse the first few days. First decent night sleep last night changed my outlook tremendously. I'm still super puffy, I'd appreciate that to go down.

    May Surgery Buddies

***TMI warning *** That was so smart!!! I had my VSG on 5/10 and haven't pooped since probably 5/8 and today is 5/14... Im starting to wonder how much of my post surgery bloat is from that!

    Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass

I had the sleeve in 2015. I lost about 90 pounds from my highest weight which was still a ways from goal, but over 7 years managed to gain back about 25 pounds. Early this year my hiatal hernia worsened and because of that and GERD my surgeon told me I really needed revision to bypass. My revision surgery was three months ago. I've done well with recovery with no complications. I've lost about 33 pounds since surgery and am about 19 pounds from goal. I will say that weight loss for me has been slower with the revision, possibly because I didn't have as much to lose. The surgery did take care of my hernia and GERD issues. I have not pushed the envelope with high fat or very sweet foods to see if I have any issues with dumping, but I'm told only about 1/3 of bypass patients do. Because of the change in the way your pouch works (less stomach acid and such) I have experienced a couple issues with dry or very tough foods causing what is called frothing or 'foamies'. It's very uncomfortable but passes in an hour or so. All in all I'm glad I had the surgery. I was having significant issues from the hernia and really didn't have a choice, but it's nice to be down in a weight range I never made it to with the sleeve.

    First day of soft food

Wow I must be doing something wrong. Because I can eat 1 egg in 10 minutes 😭. Same with tuna. But the tuna did hurt.
  7. Wow! eating Is definitely different now. This morning I had one scrambled egg with a tiny bit of mozzarella cheese. For lunch and supper for had 3oz of tuna. (Tuna had egg, light mayo and sweet relish). I did ok with the egg but the tuna wasn't easy to eat. I had a yogurt between lunch and dinner. Im still confused on how much im supposed to eat. My book lays out meal plans. But I could barely eat 3oz of tuna. I can't imagine eating anything else with it. How long does it take you to eat 3oz of food. My book says to expect to take 30 minutes to eat. But I'm done in 10 to 15 minutes. Am I eating too fast?
  8. So had an arm lift, breast lift and tummy tuck in one shot. Specifically speaking to the arm and breast lift recovery, some tips based on MY experience: 1) it gets ITCHY. I found that wearing the compression stuff (tighter the better) helped to minimize (or eliminate) the itch. 2) when cleared for showers, bring a little stool to sit on to wash your hair. I found it painful (and exhausting!) to try to get my arms up/lower my head to lather up. I actually had Mr. come in the shower with me the first couple times cuz the effort of doing it myself made me feel woozy. 3) speaking of stools, i had one in the kitchen to reach stuff in the cupboards. Reaching hurt! 4) Don’t be a hero. If it hurts, take your pain meds. And keep in mind pain meds constipate you, so ensure you are taking whatever you need to keep regular. I was constipated for a mind-numbing 13 days. *shudder*. I had not-so-fondly referred to these dark days as “Poop Watch 2019”. And when i finally went, it was not the greatest experience *double shudder* 5) Listen to your doc regarding going back to normal activities. I didn’t, and i busted open many a stitches and basically extended my healing time by a couple of MONTHS. 6) speaking of busting open stitches, the areas that kept opening up (all my own fault) where (a) the T-junction where the incisions met up of the underboob and the the vertical line going down from the nipple. (b) the armpit and (c) the side boob incision on the flanks. I suspect because these areas got the most movement and rubbing (and again because i was doing too much too soon) 7) silicone tape is your friend. Not only does it help to heal scars, but it also helps to keep the itch at bay. With all all that said, i would do it all again in a heartbeat (making better choices about moving of course) cuz i am thoroughly pleased with the results. Unexpectedly, my breast lift results became my fave of the 3 i got (and it was initially not high priority on my list). The ability to go bra-less and still remain perky AND comfortable was a need i never knew i had until afterwards lolozzz. Good luck! Cant wait to see ur results (if u are willing to share) ❤️

    Can't Decide!

I felt the same way...I started my journey back in Dec, 2019 (right b4 Covid). So I stayed over again in Sept, 2021. My surgery is now scheduled for June 6. I have been told that if you have the sleeve done initially, that if there is a weight gain later in life, that they MAY be able to perform a full gastric bypass at that time. This is the one I used. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/240130/scrumptious-salmon-cakes/ I baked them though, at 400* for about 10 min each side.
  13. I had gastric bypass in Oct 2019, within the last 6 months (or so), I have been vaping THC pretty regularly. Slowly, I've had nausea feelings everyday. Some days worse than others (like today). At first I thought I'll just vape some more and this will take care of my nausea (like cancer patients will do for pain and nausea). Well, the nausea seems to be getting worse and I think there is a connection (duh). Has anyone else experienced this? Do you know if THC is NOT a good thing for bariatric patients? I'm going to stop for a week and see what happens. I'll keep you updated. Stewy56

    So I learned something today

I'm 10 days post op, and I can tell you that I can have as much liquids as I want. But I just had some hummus last night, just to see if I could tolerate it yet, and HOLY MOLY the restriction was there in spades!!!! 1 teaspoon had me feeling absolutely stuffed (1 serving size is 2 tablespoons lol Not happening). I'm going to back it down to 1/2 a tsp each time I have it because I want to be comfortable and not hungry, not completely full to the brim. Just wait until you get to mush lol It's a whole different ball game.

We had "funeral" plants for EVER. Like they never died, sometimes not watering them for a month. We planted them in bigger pots multiple times. The last pots started to rusted and leaking on my wood floors. It was a stretch of warm so we put them outside and sure enough, that night it froze and killed them all. Good ol' MD weather for you. 70s to 30s in 5 hours. We had some of these plants for upwards of 10 years! The newest one was even 6 years old.
  16. I don't even know. I can't even buy clothes as I loose weight because I have so many from sizes 5x-1x and 26-14. lol I have lost and gained so much weight my adult life I have a stock pile of clothes so I just go shopping in my closet. I do always seem to get rid of the "too big" clothes because "I'll never get that fat again". Yet, keep all the smaller ones because "I will be that skinny again". HAHA Jokes on me, turns out I just have to keep buying fat girl clothes over and over. I have high hopes this is the last time now that I had surgery. I want a designer cross body purse, but frankly I am cheap. haha I am perfectly happy with my $10 purse. Plus, once I am smaller I will have more options for the cross body actually fitting across my body. Maybe I will finally splurge?? Also, travel travel travel! We love to travel, road trips are the best but sometimes just fly and be there. Depends on the trip. I stopped flying because I got so fat I didn't want to have to ask for a seat belt extender. Even when I was 100 lbs less, seats are still tight for me! I am "broad or wide" whatever you want to call it and tall so my knees are always in the seat in front of me. Maybe I will plan a big trip? I have a bunch of tattoos, so I wouldn't call that a reward for myself. Just another day. Although, I do want to get one to remind me of my journey and my "old self" and to never give up on myself! One that reflects how I feel and what I went thru to get here! (When I get "here") You definitely have me thinking now though!!

6 days post op and 0 lbs lost

Lots of people have a stall straight after their surgery. I did - took me around 10 days to start seeing losses. Please don't worry - if you hit your protein and fluid targets you will be fine, and you will definitely see a loss soon. Best of luck!

Please tell me I haven't failed.

This is going to be long so bear with me. First, let’s do the numbers. Your starting weight post clean out was 251. Your weight now on that same-ish scale is 215, that’s a 36lb loss. With ESG the average weight loss is about 10-20% of total body weight at a year meaning at 251lbs your average for 10-20% would be 25.1-50.2. Your actual weight loss is 36 for 14.34%. With ESG the total percentage of total body weight loss at 5 years from one study of 203 patients is only about 14.5% if follow up with providers is recurring most saw their biggest amount lost at 2 years post ESG. It seems that you’re on track for what that study suggests. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Secondly, however I do want to offer some suggestions for food. Focusing on high volume, low calorie foods can offer bulk because you’ll have more to chew. For example- A 100g of cucumber is only 15 calories while 100g of cooked pasta is 160. If you miss pasta try tofu shirataki noodles- an entire 8oz package is about 20 calories depending on brand. These can sit a bit heavy though depending on the person. Salads full of leafy greens, fruits and vegetables with minimal dressing can help you feel full. They also provide crunch which I myself enjoy. Season your food!- bland food can be boring and unfulfilling and loads of “diet” food recipes lack flavor. Adding spices can help make things you’re eating more enjoyable and trick your brain into being satisfied quicker. Try roasted chickpeas- 1 can chickpeas drained and rinsed then tossed with garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and chili powder (if you tolerate spicy) with a tsp of olive oil then baked at 350°F for about 25 minutes makes a great topping for salads while providing protein and fiber, both of which help keep you full. Lastly, make sure you’re following your clinic’s guidelines for liquids before and after meals. Drinking too soon after eating can make you feel hungry sooner and sabotage your hard work. If you can’t bear the thought of giving up liquids with all your meals try soup! Broth based soups are a great way to get in fluids, vegetables, protein, and flavor.

Please tell me I haven't failed.

Revision: it takes a month to recover from an actual sleeve, and I have way too fast-paced a job to do that. I'd probably have to take unpaid leave or even quit the job. I can't. ESG was only a thing I could do because it had a week recovery time tops. If the sleeve had a week recovery, I'd have done that instead. Regarding vanity: They know. They have all my medical stats. They know my blood pressure is something that people aspire to, that my labs are clean as a whistle, and that I can drag a kayak a mile through choppy waters to shore or walk 10 miles straight for 3 hours. They know I have major psychological issues surrounding my body. I've seen a therapist for over a decade for in part this reason. It hasn't made me like how I look whatsoever, just helped me cope enough to have a reasonable life. I'm on several psych meds. As it stands, I have a view on this that is similar to transition. When you have gender dysphoria, people who are any kind of sane by modern science don't tell you to suck it up and go to therapy to embrace being your birth sex. They tell you to seek hormone treatments and transition, because transition works. I don't think that trying to love being fat works either. You change your body if you want to change your body. I'm going to cut back to 1000 cal/day goal and hate my life, but I guess it's something. And I mean technically I guess I have lost like 30 lbs worst case. I'm just so pissed and dismayed that I haven't gotten below pre-pandemic weight before my wedding. I want to be Internet Hot (tm) at my wedding.

6 days post op and 0 lbs lost

You often gain up to 10 lbs in the hospital from all the fluids they pump you full of, so it can take up to two weeks to start seeing any weight loss. You WILL lose weight - you just need to be patient. There are lots of "stalls" along your journey where you won't lose weight for a few weeks and may even gain a pound or two for a few days. Hang in there!
  22. Prior to surgery I was working with a trainer 2x a week for many years. We did a combo of strength training (sometimes with heavy weights), balance, cardio, flexibility. At 2 weeks out, I could not have handled hard workouts. I did start walking more and focused on that for my exercise for the first two months, until I could get up to 800-1000 calories consistently. My program wanted us to be active as soon as possible, but did not want us doing hard workouts if we were not getting at minimum, 800 cals, and ideally more than that. In fact, I’m now 9/10 months out and that calorie expectation is more like 1500 cals on workout days (a bit less, like 1300, is ok on non-workout days). Having said that, I think going hard at 2 weeks post op is unwise. You are still healing inside for quite a while still. You aren’t taking in many calories and it is incredibly hard to do so even if you want to. Maybe focus on easy movement, like walking more, for a while longer. Once your cals increase and you are further into recovery, you can expand your horizons with exercise. For me, that was around 2 months. I scaled back what I’d been doing previously (mostly using slightly lighter weights and we were careful with the ab work for a while) but I quickly was back to where I was. Personally, I’m not just exercising for weight loss. It’s to strengthen my heart, keep my muscles in good shape, strengthen my bones, release stress and tension. I absolutely would never wait to get to or close to goal to start exercising. There are so many important things that come from exercise that have nothing at all to do with weight loss.
  23. Yes, it’s always best to follow your surgeon’s advice but you also have to consider what you are able to do. Have to admit I’m surprised you are able to weight lift so soon after surgery given the weight restrictions we’re given. I could only lift/carry 5-10kgs the first fortnight then 10-20 the next fortnight. Many of us are advised just to walk to begin but 🤷🏻‍♀️. There are lots of benefits to regular exercise but the truth is exercise will only contribute 10-20% of the weight you have to lose. So if you have to lose 100lbs, exercise will account for only 10-20lbs. I barely exercised at all & I not only reached goal but exceeded it. But that was my choice. And exercising doesn’t help to reduce the amount of loose skin you’ll have. That’s dependent upon factors like age, gender, genetics, how much weight you have to lose, how long you were at the higher weight & your weight loss/gain history. Loose skin is about your skin being stretched out & it’s ability to retract back. That’s the elastane in your skin not your muscles. My friend & fellow sleever is a keen cyclist (100-200km a week) has rock hard thighs of steel but she still has all her loose skin. Best advice is to listen to your body & do what you are capable of & comfortable doing.
  24. Most people are able to drink water relatively normal before they are a year out. It will be advised that you always chew your food well and eat slower because it allows you to get that full signal from your brain before you overeat but I don’t think everyone still chews 30 times at a year out. I know I don’t but I didn’t ever have issues with food going down. I chewed it really well through all the post op phases but by the time I got to normal foods I was only eating a little slower then I did pre op. I think I am the exception though in that. i get what you are saying about the risk. I am a little younger but I was a lower BMI as well. I was a 35 BMI when I started the process. A little Less at time of surgery. I was just beginning to get knee pain with heavy exercise though and I was steadily gaining like 5-10 pounds a year despite the yo yo diets so I knew it was just a matter of time before that started to limit me physically. I wanted to get ahead of it. It was also limiting me going out and doing things I enjoy simply because I felt uncomfortable or couldn’t find clothes I felt comfortable in, etc. I decided that life is too short to stay locked in the house not liking myself if there was another option. I am over a year out now. Down 55 pounds and couldn’t be happier that I did the surgery.
