  1. If you want to be generic about it (and nothing about the Lap Band seems generic in the slightest) - I would say between 1000 to 1200 calories a day, and at least 60g of protein a day. Those are the numbers I've read the most. Of course, you can't eat all 60g of protein at once - your body can only use 20-25g at a time, so you have to break it up into 3 different meals. And as far as calories go, by changing your calorie intake every other day (by no more than 200cals/day) you are keeping your body from getting used to anything, thus keeping up your metabolism and assisting your weight gain. Now, I've got no concrete evidence about this one - but I've read several on this site who say that works for them. Along with exercise, of course. They say 900cal one day, 1000cal the next, then maybe 1200cal, then back to 1000cal, then up to 1100cal, etc etc.

Victorious Valentines - Feb. 08 - MASTER THREAD!

Ezma - Your attitude is great. Kepp it up. A trip to California sounds great - poarticularly when your house is undergoing renovations! Who needs that chaos?? Enjoy! EXACTLY!!!! YAY you! Hi Jul. And welcome! We are here to support you - we alll know EXACTLY what you are talking about. We have good days, bad days, plateaus, weight gains, frustrations, and milestones! It's all part of the process, and I find posting here a big help! Keep posting, and we'll give you are words of wisdom/experience. To quote one of our more steadfast memebers: just keep swimming! Lori's back - YEAH!!!! And such a positive message too! Glad you had a great vacation, and those pounds you gained will be gone again - get back in the groove, Lori! Im hoping to take some vacation in September, and sure as shootin' I'll gain a few pounds - so until then I want to be REALLY careful to allow myself some 'wiggle room'. Not that I am losing any weigt; I think I am where I am going to remain (unless I have some plastic surgery). YAY Ezma! Maybe it was just a reaction of being away from stressors - your entire system just took a deep breath and relaxed and somehow this translated into a weight loss. You've had a very rough past few months; maybe your body was holding onto the fat as a defence or something. Who knows. Don't questions it - go with it!!!! Oh CKK - I hope things are ok. Have you gone to the Doc? If yes, what did he/she say? If not, are you planning too? Tell us how you are doing. That is just so FABULOUS LilMiss! The right fill makes all the difference - so glad that you reached this spot, and that you haven't given up on yourself or the band. Small fills and only as required. Not too tight. Talking to the group was probably good for you AND the group. Sometimes we need to hear it from another bandster NOT the doc/nurse/nutritionist. We need to hear it from ourselves (so to speak) to finally hear the message. TOO TIGHT IS NOT GOOD. And of course, starting over is always an option. ALWAYS! This is a lifetime commitment and so we have a lifetime to work with it to be successful. I'm here. I've been feeling sorry for myself or something. Just have had the 'blahs'. The 'why bother to post, no one cares' moodies. I'm over it now. I think. Shiny/RSG/ST Louis/Jaime where are you?????

    Question...?

It doesn't irritate me, I just feel bad for them. I think the maintenance stage will be difficult when the restriction is less and you haven't changed your eating habits. I wish everyone success but there's a reason statistics show a lot of people experience weight gain after maintenance.

    Protein bars

Sure you can eat them, but in the interest of health and weight loss (as well as maintenance), it's always best to rely on real, whole foods: snacks like tuna, avocado, nuts, eggs, lightly roasted chickpeas, plain Greek yoghurt (or pudding made from plain Greek yoghurt mixed with protein powder), etc. Most protein bars are essentially candy bars: they're ultra processed, high in calories, low in vitamins and minerals, often high in sugars and/or fats and salt, and most are full of sugar alcohols that can cause stalls and even weight gain for people trying to lose weight. If you read around this forum and on other weight loss and WLS forums, you'll find that they're also a "slippery slope" for some in that they can lead to pretty intense cravings for bad carbs. The only thing that really separates them from candy bars is protein content. If you're craving a treat but would like to combine it with a quick hit of protein, it's very easy to make your own protein bars or balls. There are loads of recipes online; just search around for the healthier ones that don’t contain added fats and oils, added sugars including dates or dried fruits, etc. They take only a few minutes to make, and the nutritional profile is far healthier than any of the commercially made ones.

    100+ To Loose

I want to wish the best of everything to each and every one of you! I won't say luck because there is no luck involved. It is hard work and you are each wonderful. I had gastric bypass surgery on July 31, 2007 and weighed 270 pounds. I was 57 years old, had chronic anemia (so the surgeon almost didn't do the surgery) and a 95% calcified gall bladder. So, it had to go at the same time. In 10 months, I lost 130 pounds, I never had the first complication and have had great labs ever since. I have however gained some weight since quitting smoking in December of 2012 (35 pounds). That is why I am here, to lose that weight gain and get back to goal. I have no doubt that I can do that with the support of the good folks here. Happy New Year everyone!

    Who did you tell ?

I am having surgry The 29th of april. I had decided a long time ago not to tell anyone except husband and kids. However that changed sun. Had a family/friend reunion. I told everyone. Part because I am excited, but mostly because I was embarresed of my weight gain so I just wanted them to know I knew what they were thinking and I was doing something about it. Now I regret it.

    under active thyroid

Synthroid typically can make you lose weight, if infact your weight gain is because of hypothyroidism. There is a margain of TSH levels that you should be between. If you fear losing weight you can always ask your Endocrinologist or PCP to make sure your TSH levels are on the high end of normal. That way they don't get on the low end and you go into hyperthyroidism, which can cause increase in weight loss on just about anybody. There are actually some doctors that prescribe thyroid stimulating medications to people with normal TSH (thyroid hormone) to cause them to go into Hyperthyroidism and loose weight. I don't agree with it, but it's not unheard of. Oh, and make sure you're getting your TSH checked every 3-5 months to check your levels and see if your meds need adjusting. Good luck!

It really sounds like you need an unfill. Take it from me... being over-filled does not always lead to weight-loss. It lead to weight gain for me as I finally started replacing real food with high calorie liquids because I was HUNGRY!!!!! Take care and consider a weensie unfill. (((hugs))) CIndy...(((hugs))) My sister is starting a business and this might perhaps solve my job search issues. I still will be submitting apps for nursing positions but would prefer something that will allow me to be active with my daughter's activities. FIL is feeling better but will be starting radiation and chemo next week. He is in for quite a rough road and is turning away help now so we are backing off. We will continue to offer... the rest is up to him. Haven't been on my treadmill very much... time to get myself moving again! I did get on yesterday. Went and chopped my hair off too... 9. I am scheduled for a resleeve after having my surgery Jan 7th 2006. 8 years 6 months. I got pregnant (not planned) 3 months post surgery and had to force feed myself. All was still good walked and did sit-ups regularly and maintained my weight until I had to have c-spine surgery, total disk replacement and a fusion. I was put on pain killers 1 month prior to surgery, hello constipation. I didn't know that pain killers caused this... Then I did very minimal activity for 1 year and regularly took Gabapentin/ Neurontin which I didn't realize causes weight gain. I was all clear with all blood test results however my stomach had returned to normal size. My surgery was new in Jan 2006 in Mexico and hadn't hit the US yet. I had a 36 bouge and got pg and meds made my stomach return to allow me to eat way too much. I am doing a resleeve after my upper GI etc. as the weight hurts my body, back especially but I miss being 145-165 and feeling good. I'm just curious if there are any others who are years post op and have regained the weight have been resleevers or are considering it? I am more nervous this time than before. Even 2 years after my surgery the Doctors procedures changed and he is quite a bit more Americanized as far as treatment etc.. He was good then and much better now. I went to Dr. Guillermo Alvarez which is where I'm headed back to... Cost is $2k cheaper than original however I'm still paying what he charges full price to new patients. Worth it to me. If anyone has any resleeve info or questions feel free and I would appreciate any info. Thanks

    The Boomer Chat Room

Jean, Thanks for sharing. I hope our other members see this post and respond. I'm sure some can relate, and it's a good topic. I was one of the lucky ones. I was thin all my life until 13 years ago when the steroids I took for chemo caused a massive weight gain ... and the train just kept on going, gaining weight as it went. I went from 175 to 431 in no time.

    Last two days

I'm down to the wire--and the days are taking LONGER and LONGER to go by. I am at strict liquids for these last two days. I've lost almost seven pounds on this preop diet in the past five days doing strict Adkins. My goal is to be at 205 the day of surgery. I have 1.4 pounds to go--but think that should be attainable doing all liquids. My clothes don't feel so "poured into" feeling--and so I'm glad I didn't splurge and buy some last week when they were all straining to keep up with my last supper weight gains! I'm regretting not exercising as I had vowed to do--haven't so much as walked..but am planning on doing that the day of surgery! Wednesday, June 17th, 2009.... is the first day of the rest of my life. With the force of all my past failures, the suction of the hopes of a new unburdened life, and the grace of God...I will make it thru this transition and finally, for the first time in what seems like a lifetime away, will look in the mirror and see someone "in control" of my self---confident, vibrant, alive. I go to visit my family and friends over Christmas vacation and I am SOO excited about that! I will look at pictures taken of myself from this time and not die an inward death--or try to hide behind someone. I've learned alot this past week of pre-op dieting...I have really felt a slipping of the grip that food has had on me. I really WILL do this this time!

  13. Thanks Kathy. That makes me feel a bit better knowing someone else in a similar situation. I am curios, Keppra is actually an option I have been discussing with my neurlogist because it doesn't cause the same weight gain that depakote does. I was wary of it because of the emotional side effects. How have you fared with the Keppra?

    What irritates your sleeve?

I got sleeved July 7th and I get off liquids tomorrow(yay eggs!!) So far my sleeve is total steel, but I've noticed my pallet has done a 180. I used to be able to drink 500 calories of milk a day (easy) and now.. I don't like the taste. Same with all my juices. Now, the only liquid I like is water. What a huge blessing! Especially considering milk probably contributed to a majority of my weight gain.
  15. Oh this makes me soooo excited! I am a 40DD, and would LOVE to be back to a B. I hate the weight of them and how much bigger I look with them too. I did lose a ton of weight twice before after 2 of my kids and I don't remember losing much up there...I was smaller before the weight gain too.

    Divorce

You've got to get yourself in a better place. You can't fight this battle if you are run down, depressed, stressed to the max, and sleep deprived. Please find ways to cope with this. Do you have any friends that can lend you a bed for a few hours? It would be nice if you could leave one evening after your daughter is asleep and go sleep at a friend's. A night of peaceful sleep will do wonders. I, of course would cook a wonderful meal using all of the labeled food. After all your daughter has to eat! Stress can cause the scale to move in the wrong direction. Don't worry about it. The weight gain is not real and will be reflected soon. Meet with your lawyer and campaign to get him moved temporarily. That is your best option. Once removed, change the locks so you can rest peacefully.
  17. Obesity is a disease in of itself, and a lot of us don't have a food addiction. I didn't. I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago, but I have probably had it for years. In 2014, before my diagnosis, I gained 50 lbs from May to August with no negative changes in my diet. Matter of fact, I changed my diet to no avail. The weight gain was due to the PCOS, not my diet. I'm having gastric bypass surgery after doing a lot of research. I still need my brain and hormones reset in order to lose weight and keep it off. I also did not have a weight problem when I was a child. I only started to have weight issues after I had my daughter. I couldn't lose the weight and keep it off. My point is there are many reasons why people need wls. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    APRIL 19th SURGERY BUDDIES?

I'm 4/18 also! My surgeon doesn't require any specific diet prior to surgery except Clear liquids 24 hours beforeZ. Encourages some weight loss prior to surgery but mainly do not any weight gain prior to surgery. Thinking about dieting starting tomorrow anyway. Getting super nervous and excited! Dishes/utensils... recommendations?

it's funny how small dishes give you a total outlook on stuff. . .i use a teacup saucer as my plate and a normal fork and teaspoon. . .after having done this for the past 6 months, when we go out to eat the plates they bring out look ENORMOUS!!! I always make a funny noise when they bring the plates and straight away ask for a take out box. . .that food i take home usually lasts me 2 days. . . it's really weird how this has changed the way i eat. . . sure i eat slider foods but only a bit, not in hugh gobs like before the surgery. . . i've been blessed with no serious weight gain. . .1 or 2 pounds but that is usually water weight, take some lasix and poof it's gone. . .but those small dishes sure do give you a different sense of life. . . good luck

    Stevia....yay or nay?

I strictly avoid processed sugars. I have a sweet tooth and that is one of the major causes that contributed to my weight gain over my lifetime. I limit myself to artificial sweeteners (such as Splenda and sugar alcohols), to natural low calorie sweeteners (such as Stevia) and to the natural sugars found in fruits and milk. I had diabetes. That went into remission when I left the hospital two days after surgery and I have not taken any diabetic medicine ever since and my blood sugar levels are good. I test my blood sugar levels periodically. I read the labels of all food that I consume. I look at the grams of sugar per serving. If it is above 5 grams, I look at the ingredients. The ingredients are listed in order by highest percentage, and if the first 5 ingredients contain processed sugar (in any of its many forms), then I avoid this food, like a plague.

    No one has noticed ...

My husband NEVER notices weight gains/ losses. Which is awesome when I got super heavy. But now I'm thinning out again(for GOOD) and I'm like, dude where my compliments at? I gotta fish for them sometimes, but once I point out that I've reached certain goals, or that certain things fit/don't fit, he will obvs be excited and supportive. Sometimes ya just gotta go get those notices yourself [emoji849][emoji23]

If I knew then What I know Now!!!

    1. Don't worry about losing weight after the first surgery pounds fall off. It usually takes three months and several fills after surgery for the physician to fill the band enough such that it gives you really great restriction. Many people lose 20 lbs right after surgery, and put back on 5 or 10 lbs before the band has been filled enough. Those pounds will definately come off again. 2. Stay away from alcoholic beverages, they are enjoyable and a source of comfort, but it will significantly slow your weight gain. 3. I can no longer enjoy a beer. The carbonation is such that it prevents me from eating anything on my plate. 4. Don't view the lap band as the magic band. You still have to help it work by changing some bad habits. Here are my bad habits: alcoholic beverages, popcorn and eating while watching the television. The lap band does not prohibit my intake of either alcohol or popcorn (for that matter, anything that is crispy and crunchy I can still consume in large quantities). Therefore, I must keep the beverages and popcorn out of my house. The lap band does not prevent me from watching television. in summary, if you had bad behaviors before the lap band, you will have bad behaviors after the lap band. 5. The lap band does work!! Even if you are a horrible cheater like me. While my weight loss is not as fast as I want, I have pretty much done everything to cheat it, but I have still lost weight, and am not gaining it. Want to know anymore?
  24. Admittedly I freak out everytime that this happens, and I guess its not an extreme amount or anything, but still I haven't been losing weight in a little while and now I'm starting to put it back on! I was down to 188, which was great considering I started at 277. This week I'm 196. I haven't changed my diet significantly, so its a bit confusing for me. I work out constantly, and recently I've started doing some more intense lifting. Mainly squats, which I can feel reaking havoc on my leg muscles this morning. My question is, could some of the weight gain be related to liquids being retained in the damaged muscles from lifting? Or am i just getting plain fatter and should schedule another adjustment. I've only had 2 so far. thanks, Brendan

    removal of the lapband

I wish i could encourage you, because i wish i didnt have to have the band forever... However, i know a girl who had it for 5 years, she did great, she lost 150 pounds, she was working with her surgeon because he was so proud of her success. She did support group meetings, she motivated patients before and after the surgery. She is the one who convinced me. She thought she was now healed from Her bad habits and would always stay skinny. Before christmas, her port detached and they discovered her band had leaked(the doc said it is because they did fills and unfills too many times, scary). Half of her body got infected, she had to have the infection drained for 2 months. She lost her lap band and was risky to put another one in. She gained 35 pounds in 3 months. She said she was back to what she was, she couldnt believe it, she was dping so good for so long, she had never gained a pound. She had to get the sleeve to stop The weight gain. I wouldnt have it removed unless it is causing problems
