    Vegetarians unite

I found a really good SF maple syrup that is low in carbs and calories. It's called Carey's. I'm going to try that, along with some chipotle as you recommend, in my next batch of vegetarian chili, PotterGirl! Thanks for the great ideas.
  2. I am almost 6 weeks out from my surgery. I had a birthday yesterday and had a wonderful time. I did not miss the birthday cake at all! On Friday, my mom had a dinner and she asked if there was anything special that I would like, like she always does. I sent her a recipe for a low-fat eggplant ricotta bake, and it was delicious! In fact, many family members who could have had much carbier/less healthful dishes also on the menu, opted to have my special dish as well. After dinner, we played a rousing game of Catchphrase--way better than fattening dessert! My mom also gave me an ice cream maker. I made my version of Eggface's chocolate Peanut Butter Protein "ice cream" today and it was sooo good. The ingredients were soy milk, chocolate Protein powder, white chocolate SF syrup, and powdered/defatted peanut butter (JustGreatStuff--an organic version of PB2). It was just as good, if not better, than traditional ice cream, and nutritionally, it was the same as a Protein shake (I ate 3.5 ounces as a meal and have another serving left over). I felt like I was eating a giant Reese's cup--but with 15 g of protein and about 125 calories. Today my husband got carryout Mexican food and I enjoyed some delicious refried Beans with fresh salsa, cheese and Greek yogurt (I am a vegetarian--they were lard-free). I have enough refried beans left over to get me thru several more meals. My husband usually works weekends but took yesterday and today off and we had a great time just spending time together. He bought me a huge bouquet of my favorite flowers, daffodils. Yesterday, we got a lot of shopping and a lot of walking in. Tomorrow I'm going to officially start back with my Water aerobics classes (I had to wait 6 weeks to restart any type of formal exercise class, though I have been walking). I truly did not miss anything this year--not even a fancy dinner out or birthday cake. I feel lucky to have had VSG and I really enjoyed my time with loved ones this weekend. Here's to new traditions and a new, healthier way of life! Note: here is a photo of the ice cream. It looks like a huge portion but it's 3.5 ounces in a teeny tiny dessert dish that I bought at an auction many years ago. I always wished I had a use for it and now I do!
  3. There is tons of soft food options. Doesn't sound like you eat meat. I do now but was vegetarian for many years. Lentils, soft cheeses, beans, eggs, hummus, soups/stews, over-steamed veggies, yogurt, vegetarian meat substitutes e.g. Morning Star Farms "sausage" patties, "meatballs". Keeping food soft and moist is key so I add different sauces like teriyaki, taco, pasta sauce, etc. I also soften hard foods in yogurt or pudding for example, I have been really low on fiber so I bought All Bran cereal and mixed it with low carb yogurt to soften before eating. Got 8 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber that way.
  4. My Nutritionist wants me to have mainly cheese as my source of protein since I'm a vegetarian. As she was talking, I was picturing my cholesterol sky rocket. My doc does not want me to drink protein drinks. (Frown) Then I get here and learn that I may not feel full if I eat cheese? After my surgery, I may not tell my doc about protein drinks, and let my Nutritionist THINK I am living on cheese, and cheese alone. LOL

    Juicing and going raw?

I respect your decision to go raw/vegetarian however the band is meant to work with solids and I fear the juices are not going to keep you satisfied. I am also concerned about your protein intake. Maybe you can find some compromise with your diet. If you decide to go vegetarian I have a folder of recipes in my recipe group. Some are easy crock pot recipes. Feel free to friend me on Face book at hely lb. I have another member wanting to do vegetarian so will be adding more recipes to folder. You can message me with a list of things you like and I will find you some recipes to match. Best of Luck. Helen
  6. I have been researching the procedure because all my life I have been at least 40 pounds overweight. As an adult, that 40 pounds morph into 60+'pounds. I've done everything. I'm a lifetime member of weight watchers. I'm a pretty strict vegetarian. But I just can't pull it together. My exercise level is not exactly what it should be, but I do move quite a bit. I try to be conscientious about getting at least 10000 steps in a day even if im not consciously exercising. I'm tired of struggling to lose the same 50 pounds. Last year I was on the Sadkhin Complex. That was a disaster. I've gained everything that I lost plus an extra 2 pounds. I feel funny coming here. I never thought that I would be considering this, but I'm to the point where I'm exhausted from the yo-yoing. Thanks for bearing with this post.
  7. I feel ya! I'm starting to want food I didn't even like before the surgery. I'm a vegetarian and KFC looks and smells soooo good now. I'm living on yogurt, cottage cheese, fake meat, and vegetarian chili. I'm 1 month out and I drool over everything!

I've always 'dabbled' w vegetarian type food--- however id really like to 'embrace' it now---- I do gave a big fear of carbs - in the past the ONLY thing that worked for me was Atkins but very very low carb and cal-- Any ideas for me --- I've been researching it but now I'm overwhelmed and confused lol I'd love ideas on how to go about - I've 'friended' fully raw and vegan and vegetarian type things on Facebook but I can't have anything like that yet-- I am 2 1/2 weeks preop-- thank you Sent from my iPhone using VST
  11. The Morningstar products are good (vegetarian protein). I like the breakfast patties (like sausage patties) for 10 g of protein and 80 calories, plus they are tasty--and the "meal starters" (also Morningstar) vegetarian meatballs. Also, fat-free crumbled feta cheese is a good source of protein, though it's a bit high in sodium so I don't eat it every day (same with fat-free cheese). I like greek yogurt with chocolate protein powder and splenda mixed into it. Or PB2, the dry peanut butter. Tastes like peanut butter or chocolate mousse....

Starting over, 5 years after surgery

Also, since one of my roommates is vegetarian, even if he cooks something healthy and is kind enough to offer some to me, there's very little protein in the dish, and that's a dietary priority for me right now.

This was not in the brochure

I am preparing to get branded no banded...and I totally get your post. About 20 years ago a friend of mine was 27 yrs old and weighed 450. He had one of the early gastric bypass surgeries, He had to attend counseling for year with a group that had the procedure and some considering it. Although I don't want to wait a year there is some merit to speaking candidly over time with people going through this. My friend was horrified to have anyone over to his home after the surgery. Even a good friend like me. His main reason the bathroom situation was truly horrifying. I do pretty well with biological realities. I'm the one who handles my kids broken bones, blood, vomit, etc. But this was a whole other thing. Now I know the procedure is different and they even say since the intestine is not being shortened there should be nothing that stinks. Well obviously you all know it does. I would be curious medically to know why. Is the flora and fauna depleted post surgery? Do the liquids contribute? When hard foods come in are they ones that produce gas, and stinky excrement? I know that began and vegetarian diets are often high on the ripeness scale as opposed to red or white meats. As for the shoulder pain it is referred pain that occurs when we mess surgically with the digestive system or if you have a gal bladder full of stones. Why does it refer to shoulder - see an acupuncturist - seriously. I have appointments with mine lined up daily for 2 weeks after the surgery.
  16. It's awesome for the pureed stage, Annie--you will love it! You can make wonderful smoothies with protein powder, ice and a little soy or almond milk. I like chocolate protein powder with some PB2 (dry, powdered peanut butter). I'm a vegetarian and I love pureed veggie chili (regular would work of course too). You can puree almost any veggie or soup with a little veggie broth. When I was on full liquids, I still strained after pureeing, but once I hit regular puree it was good to eat it all. You could add some kale or spinach to smoothies to get in some fiber. I like making a protein pancake (soft foods) with egg white, ricotta or cottage cheese, flax meal, vanilla, cinnamon, and oats. My VitaMix is the best kitchen appliance I've ever invested in! I've had mine for about 12 years and it's still going strong.

    one more night here...

so glad you are feeling better! I have been following your story, as my doctor thinks that I probably have kidney stones. Fortunately, mine seem to be breaking up themselves right now (my main symptom is urine that looks like it has black pepper in it, plus some pain). The PA said they don't think the surgery precipitated this, but I did read that dehydration can precipitate kidney stones. I have been drinking a ton but it never feels like enough (even at 100 oz or more). Did your surgeon say whether they thought your stones were related to your surgery? Still glad I got it, but just curious. The worst is that they think mine are oxalate material so I need to limit beans, greens, soy protein, and black tea, which are a huge part of my diet since I'm vegetarian. The RD said hydration is more important than that though. Sending you continued healing thoughts! Thank you for sharing your story.

    Vitamin advice

I would be very careful about taking the fish oil our any other supplements that are in gelcap form .... We were warned that they do not break down in our small tummies and can expand& block the stomas. We had one man in our support group session this month that that happened too and hit had to have it strictly removed. I take either liquid, chewable or fast dissolving vegetarian capsule specifically designed for bariatric patients.

What made you chose RNY rather than sleeve?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I suppose I am scared that it seems like HUGE surgery, the possibility of further surgeries in the future, I am fish eating vegetarian... but at the same time I am sure i have scar tissue from two bands. Im just scared I think.

My doctor does not want us to have shakes at all. LOL! I'm a vegetarian, I may need to drink the shakes secretly. Every doc is different.

My feeling of fullness is sort of the same as it was pre-op--except it can happen a lot more quickly. One bite can make a big difference between being satisfied and feeling Thanksgiving-stuffed or actually uncomfortable. So I really try to follow my surgeon's recommendations on food volume, eat really slowly, and pay attention to my body. For example, I can eat 2.5 Morningstar meal starter vegetarian "meat"balls. If I eat 3, I am uncomfortable. (I give my dog half of one, and she is very happy!)
  23. So I'm told that I will need to take chew-able vitamins after the surgery. For me, they will need to also be vegetarian AND have iron in them. I have to take A LOT of iron everyday to keep my iron count at a good level. So is there a chew-able or liquid iron supplement I can take as well at the multi? Ideas?

    March Bandsters!

Well I was fixing to post on here as well. i must have the slowest weight loss ever!!! I will be almost a year in 2 weeks also, only down 26 pounds, but I have had fills, My dr put the band in empty and I have gotten fills little by little every 6 weeks. I reached restriction probably 3-4 months agao, but not helping much with the weight loss. I do exactly what my dr tells me. 1500 calories/day, workout every other day cardio and strength, drink all my water, 85 g protein per day. I eat super healthy, no junk! i am a vegetarian but I do eat seafood. I get my protein from fish, bars, and shakes. My sugar and carbs are always on point. I am so frustrated, I was a cash patient too, so I am still paying for this! I guess I should be glad though becuase I don't have to worry about gaining weight ever again. I don't overeat or eat bad the band has helped me with that. I started at 229 lbs and am now at 203. Been struggling to get the onederland!!! I would just love to be at 150...thats my goal...maybe one day!
