Changing my mind between sleeve vs bypass

My surgeon gave me up to a week before, asking just to make sure I was comfortable with my choice. The surgeon gets prior authorization for WSL ...and can change options mid surgery if they feel its a better option for you. So, I don't foresee it being an issue for you to change.
  2. The sugar free popsicles that are pretty low calorie have saved me a few days in my liquid diet. I also like the water flavoring packets (especially the jolly rancher ones because they are sour sweet) because I get tired of drinking plain water. I like to add coffee to some of my protein shakes to cut the sweetness, we aren't supposed to have caffeine on my plan so I've gotten decaf, still does the job flavor wise. Tea helps too. And some people's plans allow for strained soups, so you may want to check yours! I get tired of sugary tastes even if it is fake sugar. Oh and I ordered my Kettle & Fire broth from Thrive Market (and turned off the autoship) because I could get them one at a time to see what I like. But in person at the store is probably easiest!
  3. 5.5 Years Out Hi all - I used to be very active on these forums, but as I continue on my journey I have found myself relying less and less on this platform. I do like to check in occasionally to provide insight, encouragement, perspective, and more to those who are about to begin their journey or in the first few chapters. A little about me- I had VSG surgery in May of 2018. My highest weight was about 260 and I was put out on my body and my weight affected all aspects of my life. I lost a total of 140 pounds and have maintained (most) of that weight loss. I am up about 10 pounds in the last year or so, but mostly muscle as I have begun weightlifting so I am not too concerned. I had two plastic surgeries after my VSG to help with loose skin and such. My favorite non-scale victories over the past few years: Being able to walk into any store and find something that works for me Having my boyfriend be able to pick me up as if I weigh nothing Being able to cross my legs when I sit! Feeling cute in my clothes My quality of life is exponentially better My most unexpected experiences: I am ALWAYS cold I quickly pass out if I stand for too long I struggle with iron intake Vitamins can make me feel super sick! I get an upset stomach very easily I suffer from acid reflux (something I never experienced before) My unsolicited advice: Listen to your doctors Get active Drink your water! Eat your protein Having one bad or off day is not an excuse to have a bad week You can still enjoy things in moderation

I'm in the same boat. I find that when the sweetness is too much for me, cream soups, Lono Life bone broth, and regular beef or chicken broth (without the added protein - my surgeon told me to reduce protein products in the beginning if I'm too full to drink enough fluids) help quite a bit.

    Feeling discouraged

Do they require you to go through the hospital system associated with your bariatric program to get the sleep apnea screening? I ask this, because if they DON'T require it to be through that hospital system, there are companies that do at-home sleep studies these days! I haven't used one myself, but a number of people in my program did because they didn't want to wait for availability through our hospital system. I think Lofta is one place that offers them, but definitely look into other places, if it's an option for you. I know sometimes waiting to get scheduled for all these clearances causes the longest delay. Also, keep in mind that, if you DO end up needing a CPAP machine, you'll want to call around to different DME providers (durable medical equipment) to see who has an actual machine in stock. There was a recall of Phillips' machines a couple of years ago and sometimes a machine is hard to come by. I ended up buying mine out-of-pocket from an online retailer because I didn't want to deal with the insurance company's compliance rules (which it turns out wouldn't have been an issue for me - I hardly ever go a night without my machine!), which might be another option for you. It all depends on what your insurance will allow! Good luck - I'm so sorry they sprung this on you right at the end of your pre-op journey!
  6. Best advice is stick to your plan. (Have to admit I’m surprised by the peanut butter. I know some use peanut butter powder to add as a flavour to their shakes but not actual eat peanut butter until maintenance but then plans are different.) You said candy is a trigger for you. This is a head hunger not a real hunger. Have you spoken to your therapist about this? They’ll help you identify why you crave candy, what situations, what emotions, habits, etc. trigger it & will help you work out strategies to manage your craving. This is part of the head work we do to change our relationship with food & our eating. Remember the surgery changes your body not your head. Sure, once your weight stabilises, you’ll work out how much & how often you can have some of your old favourite things, if you even still want them. I didn’t really crave sweet things as such but certainly enjoyed eating something sweet every night after dinner. Now I rarely eat sweet foods - a couple of times a year & don’t miss it. I have about 5g of added sugar a day. I do very little artificial sweeteners (in yoghurt & protein bar but they don’t taste sweet at all) or sugar substitutes either as I’m pretty sensitive & foods can easily taste excessively sweet. Who would have thought food can be too sweet! If I want sweet now I have some fruit. The sugar alcohols can cause bloating & diarrhoea in many which is why your plan likely says to avoid it. All the best.

    Any last suggestions?

Listen to your body. If you feel tired, rest/nap. If your tummy says nope don’t like that don’t eat or drink it for a week or so & then try it again (your tummy can behave like a petulant tantrum throwing 2 year old for a little while). Don’t push yourself to do more physically than you are able. You may experience random muscle twinges & discomfort at odd times for a couple of weeks - part of your healing. We all heal differently. We all lose at different rates. We all experiences stalls at times while we lose ( they’re a vital part of your weight loss & do break when your body is ready). We all lose some of our hair (it doesn’t last & it grows back.) Don’t compare yourself with others & beat yourself up if you’re not doing the same. Use other people’s experiences as examples of what you might experience & might achieve not should be doing or experiencing. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t hit your protein & fluid goals right from surgery or everyday. As long as you’re making an effort, are pretty close & eventually you have more days you do than you don’t you’ll be okay. Follow your plan as closely as you can. If you’re struggling with aspects contact your team for alternatives or strategies to help. All the best.

    strange nasty odor

It’s ketosis. It’s renown for the accompanying unpleasant body odours: breath, skin, sweat, genital secretions, urine & caused by our high protein low carb diet. We want to be in ketosis (fat burning) & we all experience the side effects in some form. Good thing is the odour doesn’t last forever. I used to carry a small toiletries bag with toothbrush & paste, mouth wash, deodorant & body wipes for a refresh during the day. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/ketosis-safety-and-side-effects#The-low-carb/keto-flu

VGS Surgery on 10/16- I get to start purée on Tuesday and I’ve been counting down. It’s hard to not just skip to soft stage but I know I’ve got to do it right. still having a really difficult time with my fluids. I picked up a few different sports drinks to try and tempt myself but other than some killer heartburn it was no good. The only one I loved and finished was some coconut water. Which isn’t the best option. Suggestions? I tried crystal light/Gatorade/protein water- my go to was diet A&W rootbeer packets but it’s just too sweet and tummy upset from sugar replacements.

    December Surgery Buddies!

It makes me sad that the pandemic put a stop to the in-person support groups at my hospital (although there is talk of restarting next year). In the "before times" they used to do tasting parties where you could get together with other people at a similar stage in the process and try a bunch of samples of different products and flavors. If only we all lived in the same place, wouldn't it be great for everybody to bring a flavor of protein powder for everyone to try, like a really weird potluck (or the world's saddest wine tasting)?

Mashed-up Sugar-free Peanut Butter Cups on Pureed Diet OK?

Hm, good point about the sugar alcohols. My doctor is letting me have peanut butter in the soft foods stage, as she and my dietician let me know at my first post-op appointment last week. For me, candy has been a trigger in the past, but not as much as savory things. I feel like on that front, I'll be ok. As you said, I too definitely want to move towards whole foods, but I would like this one day to have a little something, within reason, if I can.

I certainly will. I know the vitamins they have me start 1 mo post op but will check on the calcium chews for sure. And I agree on the Protein bars! So convient and the Built Bar Puffs are my fav! lol oh well. I can manage for a few months as I feel I will certainly be struggling to hit my other goals for a bit.

    December Surgery Buddies!

Double check with your doctor because my nutritionist recommended those calcium chews starting at 2 weeks post-op along with the other vitamins. (I have to stop all vitamins a couple weeks before surgery and then not take them again until after the 2 week check-up). The Celebrate ones taste like a chewy candy, but I think they dissolve very fast and are specifically for bariatric patients, so they are probably fine and not the same as a real candy would be. But yeah, protein bars are so dense and dry, I can't imagine they would be good to eat for a long time. Which is sad because they're so convenient.

    December Surgery Buddies!

So happy you don't have an excuse now . Yeah hydration I think will be the hardest for me as well but I'm trying to be prepared and make sure I try things prior. Have some Unjury coming as well. Decided I'd try their beef broth and root beer flavors. Nice thing with the samples is if you don't like it then you don't waste much . I'll check out Celebrate as well. Haven't figured out what calcium chews yet but my understanding is nothing chewy for at least 6 mo which also means no protein bars to fill in for a bit. I tried the Bariatric Fusion chicken soup from my doctors office. Kinda like ramnen noodle flavor broth. Figure it won't hurt to offset all the sweet with something kinda savory. I got Vanilla (so I can mix things with it), Orange cream and salted caramel.

    December Surgery Buddies!

Oh my goodness, protein supplements have been an obsession. I bought a big tub of "chicken soup" and "latte" flavors early on and both of them were so awful. Anyone live in MA? I will gladly give them both to you. My nutritionist gave me samples of a few others to try from Unjury. Their chicken soup was better. Not enough to buy it, but better. I got a really good introductory deal on Syntrax Nectar Naturals, so I bought several flavors, and I love the peach the most so far. I've also liked the chai flavor of Ka'chava, though it's on the higher side for calories (240 with 25g protein) and has 7g fat instead of 5g as recommended by my doctor, so uncertain of whether I can use it. But it tastes really good. I also bought cherry limeade from Wicked protein (really refreshing) and pumpkin spice from Truvani (good, but their shipping takes a long time). I've specifically been trying to find ones without artificial sweeteners, which is so hard. I got two flavors from Vega, which were not too bad and pretty affordable. With all that, I should have some choices when the time comes. Oh, I've also stocked up on Celebrate One 45 in tropical twist flavor, and bought their calcium chews, which are a nice treat. I like the fruit flavors best, like eating a Starburst candy. You've inspired me to finally follow through on buying a new, bigger purse. I have been saying for a year that I need one, but now I have an ironclad excuse so I can carry a water bottle. Staying hydrated is hard.

    Surgery Failure

Just remember you must must protein & water fluids thru ,water will sit if you stop drinking it & body will retain fluid just switch up your drink routine. Constantly doing same regimen & constantly eating same things you can get stuck in weight loss.. don’t stress it take some aloe Vera capsules to help with your bowel movements also , I started taking 2 first time & now 1 daily since my system change 10 1/2 yrs ago when my surgery took place..

    December Surgery Buddies!

Tenatively December 4th or 13th! I started back in June. I asked my primary about bariatric surgery and he gave me the refferal and was in my bariatric consult within 5 day. They set up all my nutrition and psychologist appts the same day. Got the all clear from my nutritionist and psych and they have submitted to insurance for approval. From the start I downloaded a food tracking app. Started tracking my food again since I'd stopped doing it years ago. Even taught my nutritionist about macros and modified body builder diets. And started upping my excerise. So far I've lost over 40 lbs going back on a modified style body builder diet and interested to see what I'll lose on my pre-op. The last couple weeks I've been pushing my protein more as well so hitting about 50% protein (around 100-110g) daily. Also calories are running around 650 - 900 daily and thats even a struggle. Slowly getting my husband on board now and started trying out all differing kind of recipes, protein powder and supplements. So far the Syntrax aren't bad (like the lemon tea and caribean cooler best), And I started following a handful of other baratric patients online (one had a DS, two had sleeves), and started aksing my friends who have undergone bariatric surgeries. Built bars will by my travel go to as well as CleanSimpleEats greens. Learning all tips and trick as well on how to get my protein in and make sure it works for my husband as well. Also, I never carry a purse, only a wrist wallet. So to help me be successful I bought a nice tote/laptop bag that will be the bag I grab when ever we go out (errands/travel/etc.) This way I will always have snacks, drinks, protein and water enhancers on hand and I don't have to settle for something not great. Also got a nice large shaker cup and it even has a pocket for my water bottle. So for my preop its 3 weeks and with my tenative date of Dec 4th, I won't be able to partake of thanksgiving unless it gets moved to Dec 13 and then I can have one thanksgiving dinner early in the week before I start pre-op. I'm actually getting more excited for the adventures my husband and I have planned and not having to think about how my weight will impact those.

    Daily calorie counts...?

I had my surgery several years ago, but we were told not to count calories, either - just to make sure we were hitting our protein and fluid requirements. that said, I ate around 800 calories/day from about 3-8 months out. Then I was up around 1000 until around the year mark - and maybe 1200 or so after that. Once I hit my goal, I experimented for awhile to figure out what I needed to eat to maintain my weight. That's around 1600 calories for me, unless I'm doing a lot of heavy exercising.

    Questions for pre surgery

I really like Kettle and Fire beef bone broth, but it's pricey. I just found a recipe for Instant Pot bone broth, and my supermarket carries beef bones for $3.99 a pound, so I'm going to give it a try. As Catwoman mentioned, chicken bone broth is what I would just call...soup. I didn't know there were other ways of making it than simmering a chicken carcass for several hours. But I've never tried making beef broth of any kind, and I really liked the beef, so this will be interesting. I didn't even know you can buy just bones from the store! Since I don't cook with any cuts of beef that come with bones, this is an intriguing option that should be easier on the budget. This is the recipe I'm going to follow: https://theforkedspoon.com/instant-pot-bone-broth-recipe/

    December Surgery Buddies!

December 27th here! I started back in July when a visit to my doctor on the non-surgical side of the weight loss center yielded the suggestion that I consider surgery. I was all too happy to do so after 6 years of nutrition and then meds never yielded more than fleeting results. I did an immersion day in August where I learned all the rules, and then I needed appointments with psychologist and nutritionist before meeting with surgeon in early October. I was hoping for mid-November, but the earliest they had was end of December so I'm making the best of it. My doctor only requires 2 days of liquid diet, which means I can celebrate Christmas Eve but will be on protein shakes for Christmas, but not longer, which is nice. I'm grateful that the kids will be off school and won't need "Mom's Taxi Service" to get them to all their after school activities that week. In the meantime, I've been working on my nutrition, slowly eliminating processed foods, added sugars, artificial sweeteners, breads, snack foods, etc. I've made a lot of progress ridding the house of unhealthy foods and adding more vegetables into my daily diet. I've also bought several bariatric cookbooks and have been choosing some recipes to try in the next 8 weeks so I have practice with them. I'm hoping a few will be winners with the kids, too. We're all working on getting better with nutrition and I'm glad to have them excited about trying new, healthier options.

    Daily calorie counts...?

I'm now 6 weeks post-op and have the green light to start introducing regular food items after having successfully gone through the liquid and soft phases. I'm curious what everyone else is consuming daily for calories. I've looked through all of the materials I was provided and the only thing that's stressed is maintaining a minimum of 70g of protein; no mention of calories anywhere. I had my first post-op consult with my bariatric nutritionist two weeks ago and specifically asked her and she said they don't publish calorie targets because....'everyone is different'. I've been working to stay around 900 cal/day and she seemed satisfied with that provided I'm hitting my 70g target. I've lost just under 45lbs to date, so it's working, but I'm wondering where others are for comparison. What say you...?
  22. 3days out I had outpatient gastric sleeve. I’m now in hospital BP220/100 would you believe not one thing I can drink here except water for days nothing but plain water! O calories the stomach pain from hunger alone is debilitating! Hopefully my family get here tomorrow with some protein water. They did give me clear broth which had less than 5 calories. I was hoping someone tried a pro shake early I’m getting desperate.

    Questions for pre surgery

Kettle & Fire makes a pretty tasty bone broth. They have all different flavors. I'm working my way through them slowly. I bought one box of about 8 different flavors. I think bone broth has more protein in it because it has more collagen from cooking longer? Stock usually cooks for a shorter time? My partner has a long standing argument with a foodie friend about whether bone broth actually exists or is really just stock. It's pretty funny... Personally I think both are tasty!

    Questions for pre surgery

I sure do appreciate everyone's feedback. Thanks soooo much!! I'm still new to this site and not even sure where this has posted and, have forgotten how I found all this feedback. lol. Again, thank you all for your support and posts. I did find some protein shakes (they should call them drinks, they are not 'shakes'. lol, that's just my thought process.). * 4-pack of Premier Protein chocolate: 30g protein, 160 calories, 1g sugar, 24 vitamins/minerals, 3g fiber. and has milk protein concentrate. * 4-pack of Muscle Milk Pro Chocolate: 32g protein, 170 calories, 1g sugar, 16 vitamins/minerals, 5g fiber. and has milk protein isolate. I read, in Ch. 7 of the spiral book Kaiser sent for the mandatory 10-course, and read that 'isolate' is better. Also bought some sugar-free popsicles. Q: What is bone broth? Is that just broth with nothing else in it? 'BONE' broth - I don't want to kill any humors and animals. lol. Well, maybe a couple humans in mind. lol. JUST JOKING, REALLY. Q: 4oz sugar free gelatin +8oz water...does that mean I can make Jello?

    Questions for pre surgery

The shakes are more likely to give you constipation because of the high fibre & protein content. But increased peeing is another story & this will continue as meeting your fluid goals post surgery are very important. (I swear I still pee every hour or so.) Getting samples of a variety of brands & flavours are a good idea because it’s common for your taste buds & even your sense of smell to change & become extra sensitive for a while after the surgery. Your favourite flavours may taste disgusting for a few weeks. As long as the pre-made shakes or protein powders contain a similar amount of protein you can buy any brand any where. Use your recommended brand as a guide for acceptable protein & other nutrients in the alternative brand you find to assess their suitability. All the best with your surgery.
