Can I change my surgery?
OKC Revision replied to Janelle m's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a revision on 4.20 and initially I was going to have a sleeve revision - I changed my mind to bypass and glad I did! I had severe GERD and a hernia and I have never felt better...am also losing the excess weight I gained back. -
Had revision surgery 5 days ago. Anyone else have had this done? Any suggestions on eating post op? Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi everyone, I had my surgery April 28, 2021 and I have lost 32 pounds since then. Technically, I had a revision; removal of lap band and conversion to sleeve. I started at 235 but have been as high as 267. I have just started soft food stage and Dr. said this should last 2-3 weeks. I would appreciate any suggestions for some savory foods to try. So, far, I've found shrimp cocktail (tiny pieces that I chew, chew chew) with small pieces of avocado mixed with cocktail sauce to be the best. I also like cottage cheese with pineapple pieces.

Severe Gerd/esophogeal dysmotility. Revision vs nissen or just hernia repair?
starladustangel replied to starladustangel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My insurance finally approved my revision on Thursday. No issue getting approved. Insurance was just behind and super slow right now. Hopefully it gets to my surgeon's office quickly and I get a date soon. -

Sunniblue20 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this good and bad and wouldn’t mind sharing. Thanks. -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
catwoman7 replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I kept changing mine. When I started, I weighed 373 lbs. When they asked me at the bariatric clinic during one of my first appts what my goal was, I blurted out 200 lbs, realizing that was probably a pipe dream and there was little chance of me getting down that low. So I was shocked when they said that was a reasonable goal (!). When I got down to 220-ish, I revised my goal to 180. The dietitian said I'd have to work hard, but it'd be attainable if I really worked at it. So then when I got there, I told her I wanted to shoot for 150 now, since for me that is within a normal BMI range She told me that that was probably unrealistic, that only about 10% of their patients make it that far, so not to get my hopes up - but I made it. Then I wanted to go lower. I just wasn't sure how low. So I had a DEXA scan at 146 lbs (the kind they do in sports labs or those commercial places, since those include fat percentage. The ones you get at doctor's offices don't include that). I told the scan technician I'd had WLS and wondered how much more weight I could lose. I was shocked when she said I was done losing weight - my body fat was 22%, which is lean for a woman. I couldn't believe it! Anyway, my weight kept dropping into the 130s (I was obviously too thin at that point - I looked pretty awful), but then, like most people, I put on 10-15 lbs during year 3 (the infamous "bounce back") But I looked much better than I did in the 130s. Mid-140s to low-150s is where I looked and felt my best (I've since put on about 10 lbs (depending on the day) thanks to COVID, which I'm trying to get off at the moment - but I won't go down in the mid-130s again...too low) anyway, suffice it to say, pick something that sounds attainable for you at the moment, knowing you can always revise it later. -
Possibly looking at revision; dumping syndrome

Thank you. If I do end up getting a revision, I will tip toe into solid foods. Dumping does not sound like a good time!! I appreciate your response! -

Yes. I had esophagitis D.. I have bad episodes with dumping so I do have to be careful. My dumping is intense cramping in the abdomen and I cant vomit, so I usually lay down and cry for a couple of hours. It has gotten better though the episodes are not lasting as long. Very helpful deterrent for sure. I dump on sugary carbs, cereal of any kind, ice cream, or if I overeat. On occasion I will have a frozen yogurt and seem to do okay with that. I had an obsession with cupcakes and after a meal I can have a few bites. I dont do cupcakes anymore its too much of a waste. I am still on the same PPI but it works much better now and my esophagitis is an A now, so that is good. Good luck with your revision. Love to hear what ya think. -
I lost 16 lbs the whole first month, and I started at 373 lbs. Most of us seem to lose around 15-25 lbs the first month, and those are with virgin surgeries, not revisions. And your surgeon is right - revisions tend to be slower - so suffice it to say, your loss is absolutely normal.

This is so frustrating for me right now. I am 3 weeks post op and have only lost 12lbs. And most of that was my first week after surgery. I lost 38 before surgery. I am following my diet and now exercising daily. At what point should I be concerned or consult my nutrition team? Should note, this was a revision RNY which my doctor said I might not have a great weight loss from.

How are you doing? My first appointment with a new bariatric surgeon in in about 3.5 weeks. Sleeved in 2010, indigestion, heartburn, GERD started about 18 months later, progressing to 8 - 10 Tums every single day for years. I had no idea it was a big deal, but it is not safe. I am sure the subject of a revision will come up. Please tell me how you're doing if you have time. -

did you have the revision because of GERD? I'm gathering information prior to my June 17th appt. What makes you dump and how bad is it? Do you throw up, hot flashes or what? Do you think it to be a helpful thing as far as a deterrent? Fats and sweets, do you have to stay totally away or just be very careful? Thank you! Oh, are you still on a PPI? If I have to go this route, I sure hope I can get off of the meds. -
Possibly looking at revision; dumping syndrome
StratusPhr posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm possibly looking at revision from sleeve to RNY. Weight regain hasn't been too bad, but GERD and hiatal hernia are the reasons. I'm trying to find an upside besides not needing a prescription PPI and Tums for the rest of my life.....what about dumping. Sweets are a struggle with me. I can do it, but it isn't easy. Does anybody think it is a GOOD thing, that the fear of dumping is a deterrent? I think it would be but I'd love to hear from others that have actually had RNY. Thanks y'all. -
I'll be eleven years out June 11th. I lost it fast and maintained at or below goal for six years. I've regained some, but not even half. I'm more concerned with another hiatal hernia (one was discovered and repaired when I had WLS), endoscopy (because of GERD) in Nov 2019 revealed another hernia, a stricture and ulcer. Surgeon made it clear he does not repair hernias, and I was not made aware of the stricture (what is that?) and I had no idea about the ulcer. I was put on a prescription PPI. It worked for two months, I had previously been eating 8 - 10 Tums a day, every day. I needed zero immediately.....and then started needing one every so often, he upped the medication to twice a day. That helped for a little while, but I'm back to needing Tums several times a week, although I do not need as many as before. I've been awakened with horrible GERD, coming up into my throat. I never did this before. This is new. I made an appointment with a bariatric surgeon/general surgeon, I'll see him June 17th. I'm not sure what to expect. Everything I've ready, revision to bypass is the best way to fix this for good. I was self pay the first time around, I'm hoping if it comes to that, insurance will cover it. Let me know what you decide. I'd love to know the process with your doctor. Tests etc. Good luck!

Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
StratusPhr replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have you had the revision? If so, what do you think so far? I'm in the same boat you were. Great weight loss, surgery was in 2010, but the GERD has gotten progressively worse. Non-cardiac chest pain, trouble swallowing sometimes, I'm on a prescription PPI and it was helping but I'm back to eating Tums again. When I finally decided to see a doctor I was eating 8 -10 Tums every day. I had no idea it was a bad thing until I read it somewhere!!! I suspect the appointment with the bariatric surgeon next month will give me an idea of what the solution is. I was self pay when I had sleeve surgery. I hope Anthem BCBS will approve and cover whatever he thinks I should do. -
Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
StratusPhr replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had it every so often, sleeve surgery in June 2010, and now I'm seeing a bariatric surgeon due to a hiatal hernia and GERD. I know that revision may be what he advises. -
Oh, Just Another Plastics Story pt 2
GreenTealael replied to GreenTealael's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Plastics update! It’s been so long I forgot about these threads Mood: Happy Current weight:154 (no measurements as I can’t find my tape measure) I’m still very happy with my outcomes but obviously I see little things I want fixed. I would love more fat grafting to my behind and some scar revisions as most of my scars became hypertrophic (I knew the risk and it was still worth it - I just need to have them revised at some point) I think that happens to many people post plastics. Plastics is probably just the next rabbit hole. videos of this years swim suit and showing scars (WLS and plastics) FullSizeRender.mov FullSizeRender.mov -
I’m due at the hospital in 4 hours for my revision and I’m excited and nervous. Is anyone else still up and counting down?

Did revision due to weight gain actually work for you?
meressa replied to JulieCab's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve in 2013 at 274 and my lowest was 170. I regained to 260 in 2017. I mainly wanted a revision for the weight gain but I too have Gerd and I didn’t know at the time it was caused by the sleeve. I thought it was normal to have heart burn. I’ve gotten back down to 233 in the summer last year 2020. I am currently I’m at 255. I’m having my revision to the RNY in about 5 hours but I’ll let you know how it goes with the weight loss. -
From what I have seen, you may or may not be off of insulin and meds immediately - I think your surgeon is just being optimistic and won't actually discharge you without verifying your status. My wife was diabetic, just short of being insulin dependent and under treatment for it for around twenty years, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off all of diabetic meds. The surgeon explained that generally, the longer one has been under treatment, the longer it takes to get off of the meds, though there are some long term diabetics who leave the hospital free of all meds, even with just a sleeve or RNY rather than the stronger DS. Her diabetes is still in remission 15-16 years later, despite some subsequent regain and losses. A few years ago, we talked to a woman in our support group who had an RNY some twenty years prior, and now her diabetes was coming out of remission with only some moderate regain, so she was in line to get that revised into a DS to knock it out for good. So, it is still very much worth getting the surgery even if you don't immediately go into remission. Note that I am referring to the "traditional" BPD/DS, which is known to have a 98-99% success rate with T2 diabetes, rather than the simplified SIPS/SADI/"Loop DS", which is not as well established.

Are most people with a hernia and GERD approved for a revision? -
So in a nutshell Before liquid diet 330 Day of surgery 319 09/19/11 CW 165 Plastics: brachio/fleur 5/21/2021 (weight after plastic, no idea lol) I am reaching my ten year mark in September! I just got rid of my excess tum and flying squirrels. I thought I'd stop here and see what's new and get some comfort and info. So DS is revised from the original, I have been doing fine with mine all this time but I wonder if I have to worry about anything now that I have the older procedure. How is everyone who had DS doing? Do I need to watch out for anything? Is there a plastic thread? I can't seem to find what I need. I just want to chat w people who got what I got and can tell me what they went through. Also, I'm here to give support as well for anyone who has any long term questions Hugs and healing!

Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to DareMightyThings's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When I started my 6 months pre-op with the nutritionist I went all in. 1200 calories a day with 60g protein minimum. For a while during pre-op I was drinking around a gallon of water on top of other liquids as well. I lost 20lbs the first month and a total of 60lbs including the 15lbs for the 2 week liquid diet right before surgery. I found it much easier to do a complete overhaul than gradually change things because I wouldn’t have stuck with gradual changes. I wrote everything down in a journal the office gave me and tracked with the SparkPeople app as well. I still use SparkPeople to track most days and I’m 9months post VSG to RNY revision.
