keep postponing to start my preop liquid diet.
liveaboard15 replied to Walktoseetheroad's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The length depends on your BMI. Some people can do 1 week. While others like myself needed 2 weeks. Worst thing that can happen is you get in that operating room and they open you up and end up closing you back up without doing anything because the liver was too big. I did 2 weeks. Yea its hard at first but after 3-4 days it gets easier. and as for coffee. While every surgeon is different. I was specifically told not to give up coffee during this time. that the pre op diet would be hard enough. I was free to drink coffee tho they said to use sugar free creamer. Also ask your bariatric team. While mine was liquid. They did say if i was struggling too much i could have 1 small meal a day of lean meats like chicken/fish 2-3oz and 2-3oz of certain veggies. (I did Sockeye salmon and asparagus) -
My surgery is May 12th. I’m on day 2 of my pre-op diet, I’m allowed to have 4 of my bariatric advantage shakes per day, clear liquids, and 2cups of veggies a day. Today I’m having muscle cramps from peeing so much! I’m getting really excited for my procedure. I’m 5’9 and weigh 300lbs.

We are surgery date twins!. I'm in Oregon! I'm very nervous about the diet changes and my bodies reaction to foods after the surgery. I'm the type of person that researches everything, so I purchased The High-Protein Bariatric Cookbook by Staci Gulbin. Reading it has helped me feel a bit more prepared but I know not much will mentally prepare me. -
Renew bariatrics in Mexico
Ninabnina77 replied to Mztraccy's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am still looking into places in Tijuana, I have mixed feelings about renew because the people who answer the phones are not really competent and are nor the best at coordinating. Right now I am looking into Dr. Illian, I am considering either the mini bypass or the full bypass. I am a VSG revision patient. Are you a first time patient, looking into the VSG? Post-Surgery Infrared Sauna?
lizonaplane replied to xtielynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to look this up because I'd never heard of it. The problem is, you're going to sweat, which is going to lead to dehydration, big time! You can't drink easily right after surgery, and it's very easy to get dehydrated even if you're just sitting around at home. It's the number 1 cause for re-admission after bariatric surgery. I would be very wary of doing this until I was SURE I was getting plenty of liquids in. -
scared...what will happen when I'm an old lady??

My bariatric center recommends three meals per day and one or two snacks if needed, and strongly suggest that we do not graze between meals and or snacks. The early days and weeks post op are the only time we have to sip constantly, due to swelling in our stomachs/pouches it just can't accept more than an ounce or two at a time. One of the reasons weight loss surgery is so liberating is because (once fully healed and eating solids) we establish a normal routine with food, the only difference is we eat less than non-wls folks. The whole idea is for life to normalize and not be a slave to food any longer. Best wishes! -
This doesn't make any sense. If it's BMI based, then those who have higher BMIs would have liquid diets but you contradicted that statement. My surgeon stated it's based on preference and also where you are having the surgery. My surgeon is performing my surgery in a Circle of Excellence (COE) hospital that requires the two week liquid diet because it has shown better outcomes, reduced surgery time, and less complications. Another hospital system that has their own bariatric program in my state does a one week liquid diet after a week of low calorie, low carb meals with lean protein. Like any other medical procedure, the pre-op isn't always a one size fits all.

Newbie here👋 Thinking about getting the sleeve
lizonaplane replied to Christina1985's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not doubling up on any vitamins - all I take is one bariatric multivitamin every day. I know iron can be an issue, but pre-surgery I used to take the same amount of iron by itself because I wanted to be able to donate platelets (I have stopped donating due to lack of time). Our surgery center said no patches and no gummies. I will talk to them about going off the multivitamins. -
Exhausted....

I'm not sure, but a bariatric surgeon may require your heart to be healthier before clearing you for surgery. -
After waiting for what seemed like forever, more weight gain, and health scared due to my weight, I finally officially have my initial consults with my Bariatric surgeon team on Monday!!!!

What a journey it has been lately. I’ve gained nearly ten pounds in two weeks...slowly creeping up to a number I fear. At 5’1” I’m now 272 pounds, BMI 52.4. I originally was diagnosed with multiple right upper lobe PEs on 4/16. I was not originally admitted, just sent home on Xarelto. Fast forward to last week, I was admitted for a few days on the cardiology floor for a work up due to a return of symptoms. No new clots, but was diagnosed with Right Ventricle enlargement and Pulmonary Hypertension via a right heart cath. Got discharged, saw pulmonology yesterday, did a walk test, scheduled to come back for PFTs. Last night was feeling worse, high Hr and BP, severe headache, re admitted. Had some basic labs and tests today, they felt comfortable discharging me. Got home an hour ago, started feeling short of breath, dizzy, nauseous again. Checked BP and it’s really high. Going to rest a bit and re check. Don’t want to end up back in the hospital. So exhausted...sick of my weight slowly killing me. I have my initial consults with my Bariatric Surgeon, nutritionist and exercise specialist on Monday (it just got scheduled today) so there’s the beginning of a light, but I’m exhausted. Please pray my BP comes down and I don’t end up back at the hospital.

One more try before surgery again

The problem with traditional dieting is that after you've lost weight, your body literally fights you to the death to put it back on. This has been scientifically proven. I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that humans have evolved to survive in a feast and famine environment throughout 99% of our history. Nowadays, the feast never ends. This is a relatively new phenomenon, and our bodies haven't had time to catch up yet from an evolutionary perspective. It's the reason why the lasting success rates of programs like Weight Watchers, etc are incredibly low. I believe the weight gain relapse odds plummet after two years of keeping the weight off. Most people don't have that much willpower. The only program besides surgery that I've seen truly work is Overeaters Anonymous, and that's for the people who truly work it. This generally means meetings multiple times a week, step work with a sponsor, service work, etc. It's a complete psychological and lifestyle change. Give it another shot if you want, but one thing I'd say is to trust your track record rather than your emotions. It sounds like you've been dieting on and off forever. What'll make this time any different? If nothing changes, nothing changes. I don't think anyone here wanted to have surgery. We did it because we were at our wits end. As for the people in your life who're telling you not to do it, ask yourself how much they really know about it. Like I used to, they probably think it's only for people big enough to be on TLC, super drastic, etc. It's really not, and frankly, I don't think anyone really needs a football sized stomach that produces tons of ghrelin in this day in age. It sounds like you've done a lot of research on the matter. You have a well-informed opinion, which means that you can disregard ones that aren't well-informed. A calculus student probably wouldn't take an algebra student seriously if the algebra student looked over his work and told him that it was all wrong. Btw, staying obese is generally far riskier than bariatric surgery. Diabetes, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, etc versus some very minor surgery risks. I don't know what your personal health situation is, so take what I just said with a grain of salt, but if a decent surgeon looks you over and says you're good to go, you're probably good to go. -
One more try before surgery again

Having bariatric surgery is not "the easy way out"... it's really the only proven treatment for obesity. One surgeon told me that if you have more than 100 lbs to lose, the odd of losing it and keeping it off are 1 in 2000! I had lost 50, 80, 100 lbs various times and always gained it back. Yes, I might gain my weight back this time, but the odds are much better since I had surgery. You can try to lose that 85 lbs but even if you do, you will almost certainly gain it back, and based on your history, you will end up heavier than ever. However, in order to keep the weight off after surgery, you will have to make permanent changes to your eating habits. For example, I'm 8 months out and I can eat anything I want... which means it's up to me to choose the best options. Right now, I'm limited in how much I can eat as long as I eat protein rich foods, but if I'm eating cookies, I can eat too much too easily. I had sleeve, not bypass, but the outcome/recovery is basically the same. You just have to be more careful with vitamins after bypass. I don't feel that I'm "missing" 90% of my stomach, but eating definitely feels different, and that can be frustrating sometimes. However, I am happy I did the surgery. -

Mexico? Or stay in states? Where did you go + how much did you pay?
lorlybeth84 replied to Christina1985's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I used Dr. Suggs with Alabama Bariatrics in Huntsville, AL. My cost was $8995 in total. Outside of that I had to cover my hotel stay and transportation there. -

Wanted to get it done at the ENDO hospital and their cost is under 10K. but me i just wanted to be near my house when i got surgery and did not want to travel. -

I did a taste test with samples from different protein powders and flavors this week in preparation for my pre-op diet (starting May 18) where I do 4 shakes a day with one "sensible" meal. Surprisingly delicious was Bariatric Advantage HPMR Banana flavor when it was ice cold. I also liked their chocolate flavor. I shook it up and let it sit for a bit and it thickened to a nice texture. Still need to try the cinnamon. Vanilla wasn't as nice but it was room temp, so I think that was a big factor. They have a "sample kit" of shake flavors that was a good purchase for me because I hate to commit to a whole bag/tub of protein and then realize the flavor is off. Unjury meal replacement shakes also has a sampler of flavors and unfortunately the texture is a little grainy for me. The flavors I tried were also a little sweet. But that may fit the needs of someone else. My WLS clinic sells Optifast products which are the yummiest shakes to me but unfortunately are individually packaged and $3/shake which is much more expensive than everything else. And only available via MD. Hope my taste testing and $$ spent can help someone else! Please share if you guys have tried anything good! -
Cancelled Surgery

I agree with using all the other tools that helo those of us with weight loss surgery to include a nutritionist and a bariatric therapist. Sometimes I wonder how much of it is that and how much is the actual surgery since most of us do not do those two options until we are forced to in order to get the surgery. They are both VERY big components that contribute to success and they could help you without surgery as well. -

I spoke to their coordinator and she is lovely! Certified docs. Etc etc. But when I googled Bariatrics in Tijuana a few deaths popped up but it didn't disclose which exact establishment. The coordinator advised it def wasn't their location but I'm still nervous bc anyone can say whatever they want lol -

My bariatric center required a psychological evaluation before surgery and if you failed then you needed to take counseling classes until they feel you can get the surgery
