    Got stuck

Well, I went in today. Yea. Worst day of my life. They had to put me under. I was truly stuck. They pushed it through. It was a piece of meat. As a cattle rancher, I am truly considering becoming a vegetarian. Sad day! Seriously, felt like removing it entirely. Feel like a huge failure, with my huge mistake.
  2. You said in another post that you aren't feeling restriction from things like oatmeal and yogurt. I didn't feel restriction with those foods either! I actually went thru a phase where I thought something was wrong with my sleeve, and I posted here. Others said just wait until you are eating solid proteins--you will definitely feel the restriction. They were so right! I will bet if you eat some solid protein like chicken and some veg that you will realize that your sleeve is working. I'm a vegetarian so I feel restriction with soy protein like veggie meatballs with melted cheese or beans with cheese. Don't do the slider foods like pizza and deep-fried fish. Those won't fill you up the same (you should be eating bread or fried foods now anyhow, if ever). Give it a try and work with a nutritionist if you can. No one is trying to bring you down but you've got to give the sleeve a fair shake and eat the proper foods before saying it doesn't work. Seriously, there are a ton of people here who when they were eating mushies and purees thought something wasn't right with their sleeve. Maybe this will get you on plan and saving you thousands in diagnostic tests. It's worth a try....

    Anyone From India?

Hey guys How's everyone doing? I'm from Mumbai, India. Had my surgery 2 months ago and doing very well so far... Not sure If I'm entirely happy with my weight loss though. I've lost a total of 13 kgs in 2 months. And from what I've been reading here so far, ppl loose A LOT more on 8 weeks. I'm a vegetarian and I am eating mostly Proteins along with having my Isopure Protein shake once a day. Not sure when the weight will drop. How's everyone else doing?
  4. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I saw another thread where you are telling people that they should eat Frosted Mini Wheats to fill up. That's just not good advice. You really need protein, and it doesn't need to be expensive. I'm not trying to upset you more...just trying to give some ideas. You can get Greek yogurt on sale, or chicken thighs and bake them or cook in the crockpot (I am a vegetarian, but it sounds like you eat meat). Some people even like canned chicken, which isn't expensive. You can get salmon patties and string cheese. I am saving a lot on my food budget bc I'm eating so much less and almost never eat out. I hope that you can get some answers to your issues and wish you all the best.

    Vegetarians unite

Has anyone read about the dangers of non organic soy products. It apparent slows down your thyroid and other things. I've been a vegetarian for 13+ years and my surgeon just took me off of thyroid meds. I have been avoiding non organic soy for about 6 mos. just wondering if this is something the vegetarian community here has talked about.
  6. That's awesome! When I became a vegetarian several years ago, my eye sight got better too! Let us know what your eye doc says!

    Anyone From India?

Hi, Indiangirl! I somehow missed your post. Congratulations on your weight loss! I hope you are recovering well! Are you vegetarian? I've heard that many of the nutritionists in India aren't doing an ideal job on meal and nutrition planning. When I was in Bangalore, I had a few staples of daal, dahi, paneer, and milk. All of those have a good amount of Proteins, carbs, and fats. If you eat eggs, those are great, too! In your initial food stages, you might want to stick to these items, because they are all very easy to digest, easy to prepare, and can me thinned down (or thickened up) according to your needs. Peanut Butter is great, too! Try to stay away from kidney Beans or black-eyed beans initially, because those cause more gas. I had my surgery on August 31st of 2011, so I am about 18 months out. I have been maintaining for about 6 months!

    Too much food?

I'm not a vegetarian but before surgery ate most of my foods from veggies. I am going to try skipping the shake and eat Cereal or something else. Thanks for the advice.
  9. Good: My marriage is stronger than ever. I learned my strength. My support system is out of this world! I have lost weight. I have found hidden greatness in everyone. I can move better in my body. I am becoming a better me! Each day of my life is richer. I am leading by example for those around me. Exercising is much easier and enjoyable. Neutral: I eat meat, former vegetarian. I vomit if I consume high sugar. I vomit if I consume high fat. Bad: Leaks suck!! food is disgusting. I don't know what I like or what to eat. Complications of the leak are long and drawn out. My journey has been rough. Esophageal spasm. I feel more disgusted than ever with my body. I can't say if I would do it again. I relish in the greatest that has come from this. I value the changes I have made and am making. But the wounds of complications are still fresh. Everyone says give it a year or two and you'll feel better about this decision. Until then I feel a deep sense of regret, but try to remain focused on all the good. Somedays it's hard to ignore the bad stuff though!! I do go to counseling. I am almost standing strongly on my own two feet again. I read that so many of you would so this again in a heart beat. I hope to join you in this thought process one day!!

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?

I'm not sure I really eat a LOT of wheat, I do eat more gluten than most on some days. I eat whole grains, but keep the portions in control. I eat more crackers than bread... choose whole grain, and oatmeal many days of the week. I stay away from white potatoes most of the time, eat sweet corn now and then, I just write it all down in myfitnesspal... according to their measurements, I eat less carbs, more fiber, more fat than they would like, and way more protein. Eating more protein and less carbs does make weight loss(maintaining) easier, and I tip the scale that way to a degree, but not the same as some of you guys. I just don't think I could live that way long term, trying to find the middle ground and get a well rounded diet of vegetarian, whole organics as much as possible. Lots of raw veg and fruits, home grown and local when possible (Im getting salads out of my garden already) and trying to keep the crazy eating down to a minimum... processed sweets, deep fried stuff, extra salty snacks, artificial coloring and added sugars. I do eat some of this poison, but try to portion control it and just say no most of the time. I am not a model "sleever" by any means, but am just trying to find my way for the long run, just like you all. My body is more fit than it has been for years, weightlifting is starting to show... not buff or anything, but feeling stronger and a little bit more shaped up. Im going into my 60s feeling like I can still do physical stuff and enjoy it, dancing, gardening, just took up birdwatching and plan on some treks soon...I wear skinny jeans and just started wearing my hair blue in honor of all the "blue hairs" that have gone before me! (OK, Im a bit of a punk) Cheers ladies, have a nice weekend!

    Breakfast Ideas

-Greek yogurt with berries and a couple teaspoons of Special K Protein cereal (can add Protein powder to the yogurt) -Morningstar vegetarian sausage patties with cheese and sometimes SF syrup (a couple of times I've had with half a low-carb English muffin or half a thin bagel but the bread fills me up too much and I can't eat enough protein, so I just stick to the patties) -Morningstar vegetarian meatballs with ricotta, parm cheese, and tomato sauce -Before I was on solids, I liked diet hot chocolate with protein powder -oatmeal with Greek yogurt on top, chia seeds (not eating these yet though), and a little SF jam -Refried or whole Beans with cheese, Greek yogurt and salsa (sounds weird for breakfast but I really like this--you might too if you like your grits savory) -Low-carb/high-protein pancake made from egg whites, protein powder, flax meal. I probably eat the veggie patties the most bc they have 10 g of protein each, so I can almost eat 2 of them or 1.5 with some melted cheese or part of a cheese stick.

    Too much food?

I think you might be able to eat the whole sub because it's a veggie sub. Are you a vegetarian? (I am). I am wondering if you could eat it all (plus bread) if it included meat protein (I'm guessing not). Your calories don't sound like they are excessive. You might do better having some solid protein for breakfast instead of the shake--it would get your metabolism going and keep you full longer. My dr doesn't like us to drink protein shakes once we are on solids bc the protein in them is more bioavailable so your body doesn't have to work as hard to process it--which makes you stay full for less time and contribute to losing more slowly.

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?

As a vegetarian, South Beach is the best plan I ever tried. It is a modestly low carb plan that you can follow as a vegetarian. I still use some of the principles in the way I eat. No way of doing Atkins or Paleo as a veg. I did read about one guy that was a palio veg, but I think he did eat eggs. Spartan! One of my main sources of protein is wheat! I make seitan steaks and BBQ them in yummy sauces or make big roasts to slice for sandwitches or rollups, and the protein is almost as high as meat. I do not have any problems with eating wheat gluten that I can tell.

    Question for everyone

Close- I watch so many of the cooking shows and want to eat food that I don't even eat. I am a vegetarian so even if its meat on tv-I WANT TO EAT IT! ????

    lunch ideas!

I didn't see how far out you are so not sure what you can eat yet. What about some sort of bean salad or something. It would keep cold long enough I would think. There are also things like black bean burgers. You can't really heat it up but its something. Look at allrecipes.com under their vegetarian section and you can find some good choices that still involve protein.

    Vegetarian!?

You will be fine...I'm a vegetarian and having no issues getting in protein. Check out the "Vegetarians unite" thread. It is very important though that you work with a great registered dietitian (RD) who is knowledgeable about both bariatric surgery and vegetarianism, preferably both before and after your surgery.

    Vegetarian!?

I'm a veggie and don't eat fish or meat will I struggle to get enough protein?

    kidney infections?!? scared!

Sounds like you need antibiotics. But here is another thing. An all protein diet causes kidney stones. Its from your kidneys filtering protein. A lot of people I talked to got this. Even I started to develope kidney pain. 3 weeks in myself. You can't do all protein all the time. You need to eat veggies grains and fruits. You will not die or weaken if you do this. Protein Is just to speed the weight loss along before the hunger is unbearable again. And help your organs repair. Honestly I would of been better off buying a big van and camping out doing isopurs for a month. Same results plus I'd have a van. Ha. But I believe I will get a good job and redeem myself financially in a few years. Anyway I wish you well. Vegetarians live so I know the all protein thing is just for weight loss. They say you can't absorb as much but I hardly ate protein prior. And I was fine accept for being a sugar cube.
  19. You can get the Morningstar products in any major grocery store in the freezer section. I would just ask a worker where the vegetarian burgers are. The shakes sound good--I thought you meant 440 calories for 1 shake, but that's for two...got it! I use the ready-made ones or make mine with almond milk or soy milk, but I would think skim is fine too if you can tolerate the lactose and aren't trying to cut calories right now (almond milk is good when you are watching calories or want to spend them on other things bc it's 40 calories/cup--but it also doesn't have much protein).

    First nervous steps..

I'm a vegetarian as well. Been veggie for 18 yrs. I was just sleeved last week so I really can't advise you with how long you would need to take off. I an tell you I started at 225 and accent weighed myself. I'm still pretty swollen in my belly but I feel really good today. Exactly one week post op. I'm a hairstylist and am scheduled to start taking clients next week. If I were in your profession I might take an extra week or two off just in case. Good luck with everything.
  21. Have you tried any of the Morningstar vegetarian proteins? I like the veggie meatballs with some ricotta, sauce, and parm cheese (about 3 veggie meatballs with the other stuff for about 18 g of protein). Also, the "patties" are good (breakfast patties like sausage but vegetarian)--10 g of protein each. The fake chik 'n strips are good too.
  22. Hello all I have spent the past few days surfing everything I could find about Gastric Sleeves on the web and have really enjoyed reading this forum I hope I am allowed to join in. I'm new here, I'm 46 yrs old and have a lifelong history of weight problems from reaching 22st at one point. I have been overweight my whole life. 7 yrs ago I managed to lose 10 st through diet and exercise, thought I would never go back, well here I am back up to 18st and still rising. My knees hurt and I am always tired and I pretty much despise myself. I need to do this, I know I don't have it in me to try and fail again. I need a permanent solution and my passion for large portions needs to be curbed! I am a vegetarian with a love of carbs, this is a bad thing.. my carb problem is something that I really need help with, that and my mansize portions of everything! I don't eat meat or fish so I'm really worried about how I will get sufficient Protein down me after this surgery, can anyone advise on this? I have my first consultant appointment this Friday 5th April with Mr Shaw Somers through BMI and I'm really excited but also nervous. I've had a tummy tuck done so I know what major abdominal surgery can be like, infact I think that was a bigger procedure and a longer recovery than I am anticipating this to be (assuming no problems of course). Shame I went and put all that weight on again having paid all that money for a perfectly good tummy tuck! At least it's still just about holding up but I often have days when it feels like I've got my belt done up too tight and I don't wear a belt! Would be nice to see this weight gone for good. Any tips or advice on a quick recovery? I'm a singer in a band and we gig every weekend, so I was planning on taking 3 weeks off from gigging, is this realistic or am I mad? Would appreciate your help on this too? Thanks so much for reading all this!
  23. I am so happy to hear you are having this kind of success at over 4 years out! I also exercise 4+ days a week, and log all my food. So far I have refused to eat less than 1200 cals a day, and I am a vegetarian=more carbs. I use fitbit to watch my output as well (for only the last month so far...love it!) according to my input=output I input 500 cals a day less than I output.I do eat my exercise cals back to stay at the -500 cals a day. No weight loss so far, but I am staying the same. I refuse to eat less. This might have to change, but Im taking it slow. Everyone is different! There are others on here that watch everything and stay the same out a couple of years.

  25. Hello! Im super new here and I am so glad I found this site. I was just referred by my PCP last week to start the Kaiser OPTIONS Program in Panorama City. I have already received their packet in the mail that gives information about the different bariatric surgeries they offer. I'm really excited, but nervous because I've barley hit the 40 BMI mark. I have been yo yo dieting for the last 4 years after giving birth to my 3rd child. I have not been able to get my weight under 215 pounds in these last 4 years (instead going up and up in weight then back down to 215) and I have tried it all! From regular diet and exercise, vegetarian for a year and a half, diet pills, and diet programs such as Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem and Adkins....nothing seem to help. I now find it harder to exercise: I loose my breath really quick now and am having back (sciatica) pain as well as knee pains ;( Besides those few symptoms my recent labs showed that I am very healthy with no diabetes, high cholesterol, or any other obesity related diseases. I can't wait to start this journey and learn as much as I can through the Options program.... also, so I can live healthier and hopefully help prevent my children from a life of obesity. Have any of you went through Kaiser's Options and are in the process of getting a referral to actual surgery with a lower BMI (39-45)???
