    Gastric sleeve recovery

I was in the hospital 4 nights but that is unusual. In the US it's usually one night, in Mexico it is usually 2-3 nights. My surgery was 1.5 hours but it was a revision and not just a straight sleeve. Usually it's less than an hour unless your BMI is very high then it can take longer.

    Gastric sleeve recovery

I was a revision also and my surgery was just under 2 hours. I had a lot of adhesions and scar tissue so that accounted for the extra time. The man who had surgery the same day as I did was a first time surgery person and he was sleeved in just under an hour.
  3. Yes, I had this and yes, it was from the band. Please look up my posts for other problems with the band. Well, I just solved it all. Had the sleeve done on 12/19/09. Even though I am 2 weeks post-op, I feel better now than I have in the past year. The band was a miserable experience for me. And for all the nay sayers who think it was because I did not take care of the band, BULL CHET. I followed all the rules to a "T". Anyway, I digress. Please do not suffer with this pain. I had a complete unfill for about 2 months before revision and the back pain still did not go away. It was from all the scaring from the band. My revision was longer than expected due to all the scaring and adhesions. This is in spite of the lysis of adhesion surgery I underwent in Feb of 09. You may have what is called band intolerance. You do not have to live in misery. Just saying...............

    Pain Post Revision

I am 5 days post revision lap to bypass surgery. I was up, walking and had zero pain in the hospital. But I had an IV so that likely had some pain meds. I was released after one night I took one Tylenol for the long ride home. They gave me a prescription for Oxy which I filled "just in case" but I have had zero pain, just a little tightness. My surgery was laparoscopic and I have 7 little stab wounds (?) with steri strips with little soreness. I think being on the liquid diet pre op really helped. It gives a new meaning to the term No Pain, No Gain. I wish you the same pain free experience.
  5. I have been sleeved since July 26 2013 and I LOVE IT!! I had no issues, didn't lose any hair, or all the typical side effects you may read about. Of course, I am going to tell you to do the sleeve... I have read that revision people may have some issues because they are not "virgin" sleevers. You may want to hear from them. Good luck on whatever decision you make!

    Tricare Anyone?

Hi there. . . Yes, you can switch to Prime when he deploys. You will not be covered for the sleeve with Standard unless you find an MTF to take you with Standard which is a rare, rare, almost never happens find. Here's the catch, since VSG is NOT a covered procedure, anything you have done upon his return and you go back to Standard MIGHT not be covered by Tricare. Now a way around this is to have your PCM pull annual labs for you, but NOT mention it is follow up care for VSG on the coding. There is minimum follow up after the first few weeks. For example, many patients go abroad for surgery, come home after 48-72 hours, and only have labs performed annually by their PCM, and they are doing fine. My MTF requires follow ups every 6 months for the first 3 years. But, we do have free access to psychs and nutritionists if needed. I recommend that your PCM communicate with whichever surgeon you get to perform your surgery. I'm up in the NW Florida Panhandle by Pensacola. Eglin AFB is where I had my band to sleeve revision performed. MTF Locator. http://www.tricare.mil/mtf/ Tricare won't cover the sleeve outside of MTF or VA hospitals. So don't waste your time trying to jump hoops for that surgeon. It won't work. I've fought for myself ( and with friends) in every Tricare area, Tricare South, West and North. One friend went congressional and still got denied through a civilian after getting pre-approval and everything. You'll have to put in some footwork to find an MTF that will take you on as a patient for the sleeve. But, I will say that you should not settle for just any surgery. The band really does suck especially if you can't get fills/unfills easily. I've been there done that, and had all the lovely band issues that come with it. Certain plans with Medicare are starting to cover the sleeve, Tricare might be following suit, but I've been hearing that trash since January 2009. But, Medicare wasn't covering the sleeve at all, now they are on some of the plans. So, fingers, toes, every part crossed Tricare pulls their head out, and will start covering it. If you need help, please feel free to contact me. I've been through the trenches with Tricare on this issue. I know how the process works as most MTFs follow a similar program. I'm more than happy to help.
  7. One night for me! band to sleeve revision. had my Lap Band for 12 years! I also feel like I can't wake up from surgery. I had surgery at 1030am and finally was awake around 430pm same day, I got up walked about 20 feet and went back to the bed for a nap, that went on for quite a while, up walk a bit and right back to bed, i couldn't hold my eyes open. I finally asked for them to completely stop my pain meds, and then I was able to keep my eyes open. The next day I was up and walking much better!! Doctor came in at 11 am said you can go home and I openly said NO. I don't think I can. He gave me 2 shots, one was a steroid the other I am not sure, and he said I bet when I call back at 3pm you will be ready to go home. I thought he was nuts!!! Well guess what, I went home at 5 that day. I wanted my bed, and he was right I felt so much better! I was afraid to go home so soon and I was fine, there was no reason to be afraid, I went home , i followed directions and I was fine. My BFF had the same thing band to sleeve the year before she stayed in hospital 2 days, and she said she could have went home the next day as well. with all that being said, I am glad i stayed 1 night. Because of the pain meds. I couldn't stay awake or listen to directions. That is the other thing, the pain was very manageable! and I have NO pain tolerance! I am a cry baby I wont lie! Good Luck!!

    Skin shrinkage

Just wondering from veterans and newbies alike thoughts on plastics. How much extra weight do you think the skin would be, let's say you lost ~100lbs, if you had some nips and tucks? 1lb, 5lbs, 10lbs any guesses? Does anyone have credible knowledge of significant inches/wt lost after plastic revisions such as lower body lift, upper arm lifts??? Did you wait until you made it to goal weight? or did you just nip and tuck after you stopped losing?? And PS...why can't I post a topic in the Veteran's Forum specifically? I'm > 1 yr out now and it says I can't start or respond to topics there...any clues???? thanks everyone Stacie
  9. If you do have a bad band some insurances will pay for a revision to something like the sleeve. It's worth looking into. From what I've read here, when everything is good it's REALLY GOOD but when it's bad it's the pits! Sorry your having such a hard time.

    GERD Help - Water

While on my weight loss journey, I've been learning to drink water. I discovered that I really liked higher alkaline water, so I kept drinking it and started wondering if there was a reason I preferred it. Then, I read this article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22844861. Now, that I think about it, my GERD isn't nearly as bad when I'm drinking pH8+ water. Has anyone experienced this? Also, maybe it might help someone having lapband GERD issues. That's the reason I'm having revision surgery.

    I feel like a failure

You only fail when you give up. You clearly haven't given up. So, this isn't failure, it's a set back. I felt like a failure as well, I lost a decent amount of weight, then that was it, gained and lost, over and over. For 5 years. I stopped going in for check ups, etc, because I didn't' want to be "that patient" that failed with the band. Guess what. My surgeon not only laughed off my "failure" but advised me that the band was over hyped and that my results were typical. I still have a long way to go, that's why I'm having Band to Bypass revision in a few days. Just remember not to beat yourself up over falling down. Just get back up, dust yourself off, dry your eyes and get back on the path.

    Esophagus dialation

Thanks for you response GeorgiaP...I am kinda in a rock and hard place..I haven't seen my surgeon since the day of my surgery which was 7-31-07. I have only been able to see his P.A. and now he is no longer at the surgery center that I originally went to..Transferred all info to his private office thinking "yeah" this will probably be much better however I am now seeing another P.A. ---She is very knowledgeable and also has a band so in some strange way I feel safer with her. Insurance changed and I did call around prior to going back to MD and no other doc will touch me if revision is required. I think I have mixed feelings about the band at this point...I know that I have struggled with not letting myself over think this situation...what if this what if that...so I discussed with hubby and of course it's like whatever you want to do I'm gonna support you..I don't think that I would have another band placed if it came down to it..I don't know what I would do but after listening to all of you guys I don't think I have it in me to go thru all this again. I never wanted to be "skinny"..just a regular size without an X or a W behind it..haha I have a terrible fear that I will regain the weight that I have already lost...My challenge each day is to not get frustrated and resort to chips and candy bar...because of course I have no problems eating junk food. Again thanks for your input.
  13. I had my consult yesterday and I will just spend one night with revision. The surgeon said it's not difficult removing the band and doesn't even charge extra to do it. Told me his most satisfied sleeve patients are the ones who had bands. He told me that sometimes with revisions there is a little more nausea than just a regular sleeve.
  14. Swampdoggie-thanks for asking. I'm feeling good. The pain isn't too bad. We've been getting so much snow that I've been cooped up in the house all week. I take my dog outside when I can but don't feel strong enough to stand for a long period of time. I do get some acid reflux - have been taking tums. While I'm cooped up I've been constantly on my tablet reading the posts on Bariatric Pal. It seems like the people that had the revisions do better with the food than the first time Sleevers. I'm wondering if it's because we know when to stop like we did with the band? I can't wait to start the mushy food phase but am nervous also. Lori

    Revision to bypass

Yeah. I got my revision to bypass last week. So far, this has been easier than the sleeve, and I’m just exhausted, but nothing hurts. I had horrible GERD, so they corrected a large hernia and cut my prior sleeve even more, to make it look good (it was enlarged). After all, the surgeon said everything looked great, and I felt ok. I’m hungry, but I think this is more mental than anything. I need to lose around 50 pounds to meet my goal. I was around 20 pounds short with the sleeve, but I could not do it.
  16. Dumping is not guaranteed. So maybe not the best ideas to make a decision on that. You posted on the bypass thread so you'll get a lot of pro bypass perspectives, too. I decided bypass because I wanted the greatest chance of my co morbidities being completely resolved. I wanted long term data. I've been on this site a while and I can't figure out if sleeves are just being offered more lately and there by we are hearing more about folks not being able to eat being 6 wks, 6 months out and other stuff or if sleeves are more vocal about it. Can't tell. I'm two weeks out and can tolerate everything I tried with no problems, nausea, vomiting. I know when I'm am eating too fast but I think that would be the same for everyone at this point. You need to make this decision with your surgeon. I think most people go with their guts and at their fear edge. Some people are gonna be creeped out by the re routing, I was afraid of the long line of stitching with the sleeve or developing any sort of reflux, heartburn etc. Also, what sealed the deal for me and you might ask your surgeon. How many of each procedures has he/she done? Which one has he/she done the most revisions or fixed complications with? And how comfortable with it are they? If his or her child needed bariatric surgery which would they recommend? Honestly, you are young and healthy and would probably do well with a uncomplicated sleeve or bypass process, but you may not need all the bypass has to offer.

    I am sad and angry...

((((((((((Oh Babs! )))))))))) I am so sorry you got this news. Yeah, "medically neccessary" is quite the quandry, especially when viagra, et. al, get approved, but birth control is another matter entirely.... It took a long time to get my second skin graph after my motorcycle accident. I cannot tell you the number of Dr.s who said I just needed to baby the original site. Baby it hell! I had to sleep with a wet cloth on my leg just to help control the uncontrolable itching. In warm weather I would have to spend all day with my leg elevated to held reduce the seepage. And they kept telling me that I just needed to baby it an to quit whining about it. The insureance company kept turning the revision down bacause it wasn't "necessary." Fight this Bab! Fight! Fight! Fight! You know that we are all here for you. We all send you such wave of positive energy, we remember you in our prayers, no matter whom we pray to. If you need help with your letters, I know we have some very eloquent writers here who would jump at the chance to help you. You said the skin on your thighs is breaking down, are you bleeding? I should think at the very least you are suseptable to skin infections similar to celulitus. You might think about that angle when you write your letters. (((((((((( Babs! ))))))))))

  19. Help! Haha I'm leaving for a 10 day vacation and I'm 4 months out from surgery. Down 73ish lbs from preop and feeling great! I'm so worried about how I'm going to stay on track in Europe. I don't know what the food will be like and how I will get in all my protein. Thinking about packing 10 protein drinks but that's silly right? Not sure. Thought about 100 calorie nuts packets and protein bars. Any suggestions for what I can bring with me or any suggestions from anyone that has been to Paris/Loire Valley or Barcelona while on track and seen or know of any good ideas or options so I don't come back 10 lbs heavier. My weight loss journey has been a battle and I fight the demons every day. I haven't had an easy, not hungry time of it and I really don't want to lose now! Thanks in advance for your help! 20. So 3 weeks ago I has the band to sleeve revision and so far I'm ok. The only problem I'm having is getting all my liquids down or drinking or eating any protein. I feel so full once I drink like 3 sips of my shake and that's all I can get down for the rest of the day. My dr said don't worry but I'm weak and can't even exercise because I have no food in my system. Has this happened to anyone else?

    4 Weeks out!

Hello everyone, my name is Free. I had gastric bypass surgery April 6th. So far I've lost 31lbs & I'm feeling pretty good. My surgery was actually a revision from lapband surgery that I had back in 2009. My band slipped and I had it removed back in February. It's good to be able to join this group. Glad to meet, share and support you all on this journey. Good luck and congrats to you all.

    More support can't hurt!

Truly, not very long. But, I have a lap-band that was ruptured during a fill. So after a failed four year stent w the band I seen a new Bariatric doc and discussed removing the band. He suggested rny. That was in December. I drug my feet for a while and did some research and soul searching. Then seen the doc again in Late march. Paperwork was submitted in April and approved a week later. I had to attend a revision class. A week later after that I had my may 10 & 14 appts. If all goes well, ill have a surgery date by the end of may or early June. So I started attending the support groups last night. I'm seeing the dietician next week as well. Moving right along!

    4 Weeks out!

Why did you choose gastric by pass instead of sleeve? I'm having revision to sleeve, just curious about why you chose bypass
  24. Congrats on your revision......I was very fortunate not to have a drain. Healing will take some time but in the process, you will be dropping a lot of weight! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

    Certain Bmi To Have Tt?

I had a panni after losing only 80 pounds, only about 1/3 of the way to my goal. But I am probably the exception. I started out at 433 pounds with a very pronounced pannus. As I lost weight my pannus only got worse, hanging lower, rashes impossible to manage. It made exercising quite difficult. My insurance coved the panni. It made it much easier to exercise, dramatically improved my appearance and eliminated the rash problem. But I knew all along that I would still need major cosmetic surgery as I get close to goal weight. Now I'm about 40 pounds from my revised-revised goal, and I am planning for a lower body lift with lipo. That will be out of pocket. I would say wait until you are at or nearly at your goal weight unless your pannus is causing you health problems or interfering with exercise.
