  1. Wondering if the Keto diet is a good idea,  any thoughts?

    1. ShelbyMoore

      ShelbyMoore

But .. I’m not eating fats which the Keto diet wants you to do.

I'm definitely cooking with olive oil, eating peanut butter (although very sparingly ) because I can give up carbs but I NEED those healthy fats

Yes, agree. I’m eating healthy fats. So we are unofficially on a Keto diet. :)

    Keto diet?

Six days out...does that mean you are having surgery in six days? If so what this is doing is shrinking your liver making it easier to get the sleeve done (liver right above stomach). Ketosis (https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto) is a quick way to make it happen.

    Keto Krate

Has anyone ordered the Keto Krate? I am looking long term for items that will be healthly and easy with my new lifestyle change... Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. This might have been asked before but I am struggling to lose 35lbs of baby weight! Trying to find the right foods and ways of eating that will work with gastric bypass. Attempted Keto but I got nervous about more malnutrition or sodium issues! HELP! 35lbs May seem like nothing from how much I lost but it feels like a ton and is weighing on me physically!
  5. Hi , I am a newbie still but I 'll share my input. Dont be depressed, you ve made alot of progress from what I can see in ur stats. My hair is thinning too at the middle parting and more hair falls out when I wash out. I am expecting it to get worse at some point so. I dont think we can do much but let it run its course . I havent stalled yet but my weight loss is a bit slow. So I am taking a more keto approach, having protein shakes and salads more. Keto might help you but general advice is to stick to your plan until the stall breaks.
  6. Vets- I need some opinions (although typically i'm more than willing to give my own)...I am 5 years post VSG. I did good overall, losing about 85 lbs. Then, I had major life issues and had some regain. Had some ugly health news about 2 years ago, did Keto and lost my regain. I'm cycling on/off keto for the last few months and maintaining, but find that i have serious sugar cravings occasionally. I have some screenings coming up for the said health issue and REALLY want to get myself back on track and wondering if a short-term reboot using my pre-op diet is a better option than just going back to Keto? Strict keto for me is basically meat, eggs, fat, green veg. Might be a stupid question but I would love some opinions.

    Protein

I find keto is a great way to remove cravings, but I usually only do it for about 3-4 weeks as needed. I would buy the book "intuitive eating" and begin that journey to go beyond diet plans and calorie counting. Best of luck-
  8. I'm so upset. In the last 9 days I've gained 9 pounds!!! Nothing has changed with my diet and workouts. I take my vitamins like I'm supposed to. I never cheat on my diet, I work out 5 days a week. So I called my dietician and after we went over everything she said "remember when I told you that having pcos would cause you problems with weight loss? Well here it is. If you remember, you lost 100 pounds on keto and then the weight just started coming back no matter what you did? It looks like it's happening again." I literally started to cry, because nothing I did stopped the weight from coming back. I asked if I could do a pouch reset and maybe reverse it now and she said "you certainly can try, but you aren't gaining because of over eating or cheating on your diet. You're gaining because of a hormonal imbalance that seems to like you being fat". I don't know what to do. I had such high hopes that the surgery and weight loss would help improve the pcos, but it looks like, once again, it's out to sabotage me. I guess it's not enough that it caused me to have 10 miscarriages through the years, or need fertility meds to have my daughter, or never be able to get pregnant again after her. Now it won't let me lose weight and keep it off. I feel so defeated. All my hard work and once again, it's all for nothing.

    Alternate to sweet protein shakes??

I made some creamy based soups with cauliflower, canned chicken, cheddar cheese, and broccoli and added protein powder and then popped it all in the blender. The blender takes care of the clumping, and it's pretty tasty. I add a little extra cream for fat, but I follow a keto diet. You could omit the cream and still have a nice protein packed, "sippable" soup with less fat. Now that I'm not in pureed foods anymore, I don't blend the entire thing, just the cauli, cream, protein, and cheese, and I just add steamed broccoli and chicken.

    Considering stage Questions

I know that there are others on here that will disagree with this statement, but I realize that this is a lifelong journey. It is not a sprint to the finish line and that I will have to change my relationship with food for the rest of my life. That being said surgery helped put ME in control of the food and not the other way around. I still eat crackers from time to time, I also eat sugar from time to time. But it isn't an everyday thing and not in the amounts that I used to consume. I do know that sugar is one of my downfalls so I do watch how much I consume. I also changed my part time job. In essence I was working 240 hrs a month at my main job, and then another 90-120 hours a month at my part time job. That amount of working led to me eating fast food 3-4 meals a day and packing on the pounds like crazy. I still work about 300-320 hours a month but I am prepared and have protein shakes in my book bag, in the refrigerator at both jobs as well as protein bars. Just like with keto meal prep is the key! If you plan ahead and keep something high protein around you then you have passed half the test. If you are doing Keto now then you are well on your way!!

    Vegetarian & Bypass

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years and a part-time vegan for about 2 years. I highly recommend Dr Garth Davis' new book called Protein-aholic. He's also on FB and actually responded to a question I asked. He's a bariatric surgeon who recommends vegan. I will still do dairy for a while, but once I can eat real food I will phase it out slowly. I've noticed a lot of people on here are keto, basically Atkins. It's expensive, and not easy to maintain long term. I've read numerous peer-reviewed studies and meta-studies that say we're eating way too much protein. I'm nowhere near any kind of expertise on diet and nutrition, but I know how I feel when I eat mostly plant-based vs. a heavy animal protein diet. And I flat out refuse to believe that fruits are bad for us. Juice is debatable. But I will never cut out whole fruit and starchy veggies like potatoes. Just my 2 cents.
  12. For CIGNA, it is a 1 bariatric surgery in a lifetime thing. They will never pay for a revision, period. My BMI when i met with 1st dr was 56 (down from over 60 when I started doing keto 15+ months ago). 1st Dr actually said he would do a bypass as well due to my very high BMI and the need to get weight off faster (both knees have severe arthritis and I have to get injections to be able to walk and that is even lately...even with 52.3 lbs lost..getting progressively more painful). Knee orthos (got 2nd opinion) have said both knees are so bad they require full replacement and as soon as my BMI is under 40, they will consider doing the operation. 1st dr though, felt uncomfortable with my clotting history so he said he would only do sleeve at this time and to save up my money (which I don't have) to pay for my own revision to bypass with duodenal switch in a yr or 2. I still have mixed feelings about the 2 different surgeries..things I like and don't like about the both. Do you think I should still reconsider? I'm asking this as I'm wanting to make the best decision..not just what either dr's have said...and I'm torn although both said I needed the bypass originally.

So you New WLS people Make it/ Survive

Treated it like a regular Thursday. With COVID, no family gathering. Made a pot roast for me and keto sausage balls for hubby. No food focus. Stayed on track.
  14. Sined, Don't let your doctor put you down 49lbs is amazing I am clapping. Like i said its not a race, and if the weight doesn't come of in ridiclous chunks you can try and prevent lose skin. I have a philosophy not to use word like cheat days .You ate a piece of food you enjoyed. I have what I call treat days when I reach a weight goal. Your not cheating on anyone your enjoying in moderation. Make sure you do start getting some 30 min walks in it helps with the skin and will help the kilo's drop. Thank you for reading my novel. If you honestly ever need anything just message and we can have a chat. Congrats too. Golden Barbie, Have you had a Composition scan??? You should try a full Keto diet. Its amazing i do it every 3 weeks. I am not sure if you have every heard of biltong that helps me it like a beef jerky but nice and addictive in a good way 100grams packet gives you 27grams of protien and only less than 2grams of carbs and if you about 120calories in a pack if i remember correctly. If you snack on it through the day you will keep your metabolism going. There is also flavor free protein powder you can put in drinks. I have 2 cups of Vanilla rooibos tea with some fake sugar and my benefibre so I am regular and a scoop of the flavorless protein and that get me to 60 grams a day with no worry. Try alternatives. well done on getting through the struggle and being optimistic. What was your starting weight share you success Thanks for reading too. I started typing and just couldn't stop lol
  15. It's tough, isn't it? It's a lifetime struggle for many of us. I can highly recommend the Sleeve Surgery as I had it just under two years ago and lost 60 lbs or so. That being said, this year with COVID, I gained 10-12 of it back, but I just got back on track again two weeks ago and have already lost 4 lbs on KETO. What's different about dieting post-op to pre-op is that your stomach is smaller so you can't eat as much. It's your best friend and aid in dieting. As long as you're choosing the right foods with the focus on protein, the portion sizes take care of themselves and that's a huge impact on your success. I can't speak from experience as to a revision because I never had the lapband.
  16. Well, to be fair, it was all my fault. The sleeve did it's job. I was really struggling with COVID and the racial tension in this country (no excuse) and Depression and I was eating two giant Hershey bars a day and cookies. Sweets are my weakness. Once I quit eating the sweets, the weight started coming back off. I can't eat very much at a time. The sleeve cuts off 3/4 of your stomach so you end up with a teeny tiny stomach that can't hold much. Therefore you can't eat much at any one sitting. That being said, if you ate or snacked every few hours, it's possible you could still eat too much, but if you stuck with three meals a day and maybe one snack you'd drop the weight like crazy. On the bright side, I was able to stop myself at the 10 pounds and not gain back 20, 30 or 50. So in the long run, I've learned my lesson, I didn't regain all of my original weight, and I caught myself before I got in too deep and I'm back on track. Hubby and I are now doing the KETO diet and it's amazing how little I can eat due to the stomach size restriction. Like I said, it's a Godsend.
  17. Today was this: Breakfast: Egg with cheese and a slice of bacon Snack: light babybel cheese Lunch: zucchini noodles (very little) with 2 oz chicken baked with a roasted red pepper and basil Snack: Birthday cake muscle butter with 1/4th if an apple Dinner: teeny tiny burger with cheese, no bun Babybel cheese and pepperoni have been favorite Snacks, I've also been eating turkey meatballs and shepherds pie made with ground turkey and cauliflower mash. Pinterest has been my best friend. I have so many low carb/keto recipes saved. I feel like I'm still able to eat amazing food just much much less of it.

    6 month stall / plateau

So I was sleeved on January 6th, I'm approaching my 6 month surgeriversary in three days. My starting weight the day of surgery was 303 pounds, so i've lost about 94 pounds. Since about 6/25 I've been stalled, fluctuating between 208 & 210. I've heard of a dreaded 6 month stall and I'm not quite sure what I can do to kick my weight loss back into high gear. On any given day I can eat between 500-1000 calories. It honestly depends on how much restriction I have on the particular day. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am also fairly active and workout for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours a few times per week if my schedule permits. I also stick to eating a keto-based diet and try tostay away from carbs as much as possible and I try to get at minimum 60grams of protein in per day.

    Rash and bad breath

Interesting. I never heard of keto rash before. Is it common? The mouth funk is definitely ketosis though, I noticed it after 2 days, and unless you are guzzling apple juice for your liquids you are probably in it without trying because your carbs will naturally be so low at this point. The strips aren't too expensive and can be found in any pharmacy or online.

    Rash and bad breath

I have been getting a small rash on my neck. It seems to go away and then comes back. I plan on asking the Dr. about it but it started around the same time that he had me start back on the blood thinners while i am home.. (I have 9 more days of that). Now yall have me wondering. I am not sure what keto rash is, but if whatever this rash is that keeps appearing and disappearing has nothing to do with the blood thinners, i will be ok with that LOL.

    Stalled

I see my doctor today and yes it's I'm in ketosis he said this is normal it's a water retention there's something called a keto whoosh but he said here in another couple weeks if that doesn't work then I can try and do a reset
  22. HelloFresh was only 27$ a week for my husband and I -although it was only 3 meals, it did include all of the ingredients so I thought it was a good deal compared to what those ingredients would cost at Walmart. Can you explain Keto to me, please?

    3 month supervised diet

My doctor doesn't believe in keto as a long term successful way to eat. I agree with him and enjoy fruits and veggies and feel they are nourishing to my body. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

Any sleevers doing a ketogenic diet?

I was the doing keto before surgery. I'm now on liquid diet and obviously can't eat food but I did like the Keto diet before and would like to continue doing once I'm in regular food. Good luck to you all. No matter what, remember that making the decision of having surgery was the best decision ever!

    Stevia

I would think that would be fine. Is it on your list from your DR? I do know I have been checking into the KETO diet and it is one of the approved sweeteners.
