    How Much Can You Eat?

Yeah, watch out for Taco Bell. Just one of those little crunchy tacos are 180+ calories. They really suck too. I can eat 6 oz of yogurt at a time slowly, but only 3 oz of dense Protein. liquids? I am bottomless. I can see how one could drink themselves back to fat.

    How Much Can You Eat?

2.5 months post-op typical day: Breakfast - 3 oz carbmaster yogurt,1 hard boiled egg, coffee lunch - 2 oz meat, 1 hard boiled egg, small can of V8 afternoon snack - 5 Ritz crackers, 1 oz cheddar cheese dinner - 3 oz meat, 1/4 cup veggies (if that) dessert - 1/2 cup low fat frozen yogurt Compared to what other people are eating, it looks like a lot. Compared to what I was eating pre-VSG, it's next to nothing. Note: I am not losing weight very quickly but I know that my metabolism is fooched.

    Ice Cream!!!

Just one of those days. Had yogurt with fruit for breakfast then our lunch after church took forever to cook so it turned into dinner. Normally I'm averaging around 700 calories a day
  5. Hi guys! I am on my puree stage and I got all the staples I have been reading about. Like sour cream, greek yogurt, cream cheese, baby bell cheese, etc. I puree'd chili yesterday. I had the bacon potato Soup puree'd, not a big fan! What about meat? If i made tuna salad, do i have to puree it? What else can I eat that will help my puree stage go better? I dont eat sushi or tofu or any of that! Any avise would be 100% appreciated! I am getting so frustrate! Thanks guys!!!

    4 days post op

I started protein shakes yesterday, and that did help some, but after having a cup of broth which takes 30 min or longer to finish, less than an hour later my stomach growls!! I am so afraid of getting something stuck also. I use yoplait vanilla yogurt and I have frozen fruit and bananas that I put in the blender so there are no chunks it's all smooth. I put some ice in the blender too so it's liquid, just a little more filling. Sounds like your diet is more restrictive than mine, but at this point my band is wide open. I don't get a fill until 6 weeks post op. In the hosp I had a thicker broth than I have here and also italian ice. My yogurt kind of reminds me of the italian ice, it's just not frozen. I will definitely keep in touch and keep me posted on your progress as well.
  7. So I am officially 2 weeks post-op today. Thought I'd share my experience for those interested. We'll start with the stats. I've lost 18 lbs since the surgery, and 64 lbs since I started this process 8 weeks ago tomorrow. The surgery apparently went very well, doctor said it was one of the smoothest he'd had. There was awful pain post-op that lasted about 5 hours. It really was bad, probably the worst pain I've ever experience. It quickly subsided after that, and I have really had a pretty easy time with it since. I went home the day after surgery, and began adding Protein shakes and Water on day 2 post-op. Things went well, and I was able to get my required 60 grams of protein and 64 oz of water almost right away. The afternoon of Day 8, for what seemed to be no reason, I started feeling very nauseated, and extremely tired. By Day 9, I could not stomach the thought of Protein Shakes of any sort (which I absolutely hate since surgery BTW). Day 9 consisted of me just basically just getting in my water, and even that was a struggle. By mid afternoon I was feeling so horrible, and I thought I was having the beginnings of a panic attack. I was sweaty, dizzy, and felt like I was going to pass out. I decided to take my blood pressure out of curiosity, and it was 98/45. I was obviously a bit freaked out, and called the doc. He speculated that it was most likely that I had lost so much weight so fast that I was probably over-medicated now for my high blood pressure. I was taking 10mg of Amlodopine and 100-25 of Losartan-HCTZ. He had me stop the Losartan completely, and take half of my Amlodopine starting the next morning. I felt better (but not great) on Day 10, but by Day 11, I was 100% back and feeling great again. I had started a tiny bit of applesauce on Day 9, tried yogurt, but could not stand the taste. Day 11, I added in cottage cheese, and Day 13 started with some roasted sweet potatoes. food has been absolutely no issue whatsoever. With the exception of the BP issue, nothing has made me nauseous, and while I have no sense of hunger, I also have no sense of feeling full. I actually find the process frustrating as I feel I am trying to sort out quantities, frequencies, etc by myself. And while it's going very smoothly, I have a lot of self-doubt about rather I'm "doing it right." My doctor does not give quantity guidelines as he feels it varies so much from person to person. He also does not give calorie guidelines as he doesn't care about calories as long as people are putting the "right" foods in their bodies (I know this is VERY different from most). I reached out to the BariatricPal community and asked to see what their doctors recommended in regards to quantity, which has been helpful. I saw that there were recommendations not to exceed 4 oz per meal, so I have been sticking with that, but I can definitely eat 4oz of cottage cheese with no problem at all. Never get a sense of fullness (again, I'm also never hungry), never feel back pain/pressure, or pain/pressure in my chest or any of the other symptoms I hear about. All in all, I consider myself very lucky. Things have gone as close to perfect as possible. Even the blood pressure issue, while unpleasant, is exactly what I was hoping to get from the surgery. And while the food re-introduction is stressful for me, it couldn't be going better. Just thought I would share my experience to-date for those who maybe going through the same thing, or about to be! EDIT: Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, I'm only about 7 lbs away from not being morbidly obese for the first time since I can remember (probably at least 15 years). He's to being severely obese (for now)!
  8. I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been reading the boards for a couple of months now and hadn't had the opportunity to post. However, now that I am at home recovering I thought I would say hi! My surgeon was Dr. Jeffery Kolff at Abington Memorial Hospital. I live in the greater Philadelphia, PA area. I had my surgery Tuesday afternoon and was discharged Wednesday afternoon. I have been doing great so far, no complications and no side effects yet, and haven't taken any pain meds since Wednesday. Last night I walked around a store for an hour w/ my husband which felt great! I am definitely pretty tired still but overall feel great. I am not getting a ton of my full liquids down, but I am still doing well sipping & drinking the yogurt and Protein shakes. I will probably have lots of questions in the next few weeks & months! I look forward to getting to know you all and learn from your experiences.

    Soft Serve Frozen Yogurt

I would say frozen yogurt is a good option especially if its the lowfat version. Its also a source of calcium which (according to the TV commercials) helps with losing weight. We picked up some low fat low calorie yogurt bars from Costco which I love (unusual for me since I am not a fan of yogurt, particularly after the pre-op diet.)

    Soft Serve Frozen Yogurt

I don't see why not. If we're able to have regular yogurt why not the frozen kind, right?

    Liquids

I know during my full liquid phase 32 oz were to come from stuff like water, shakes, Propel, broth, Gatorade Zero, etc. and the other 32 oz from stuff like blended bean soups, cream soups, milk, yogurt, sugar free pudding, etc. Do you have any paperwork/a binder with that info for reference that the doc or dietician gave you?

    I did it!!!

Surgery was Monday in Mexico, and after a few days of pain and suffering, I am back home and recovering. I did have some regrets after surgery, but im sure that is normal :001_tongue: Now i'm just working on the yogurt and chicken broth and juices, ready to get my energy back so i can get to exercising again! I hope that everyone is doing well!! Oh, and 7 lbs down in one week! Mostly Water weight of course but it is so nice to just see the scale go DOWN instead of up for once!! Jillian

Yogurt, cottage cheese, baked potatoes, creamy soups. That is what I lived on. Good luck.

    Banded on 2/26/09

Hi guys! I was also banded on 2/26...and I did also "regret" my decision. But now, three days out, I feel much better, still have pain and gas, but well worth it. I was 237 pre-op, and when I started my first round of liquid diet on Jan 1, I was a whopping 256 (I am 5'1") so I am please, I weighed myself this morning and I was 233. So so far, so good, I have been doing clear liquids but toss in a yogurt and pudding every once in a while with no problems. Any other issues? I am still sore and burb alot, but I am moving around fine!
  16. Hi. Im in Florida in Kissimee. And same here all liquids no bars or actual food. So I'm back on it tomorrow since technically I shouldn't have been off of it at all but i am on antibiotics so I had to have some veggies and protein. I'm only allowed one salad or veggies per day and that's it. I can have yogurts or milk w shakes but not both. So it's broth all I want and lots of Fiber supplements and my Vitamins. That's it. I will have another go at it tomorrow for the next days till my surgery. What got me going crazy is that since I am still on insulin I only last half a pound after one whole week of just liquids. So that was very very disheartening. Insulin is like a fat trapper. Lol. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Question!

Yes I mixed with water this morning. I am able to keep water, G2, yogurt and SF jello and Popsicles down. I have not had this issue until today.
  19. My doctor discouraged me from pureeing anything meat, said it can lead to food aversion later in the solid stage. I have to say I haven't been able to handle tuna salad since my surgery, and it was one of the things I pureed first. Honestly, I stuck to liquid protein my first month - shakes or soups. I just started adding "soft" foods like cooked asparagus and mushrooms to my soups. TOFU! I did a lot of soft tofu, lightly pan seared with seasonings. It was delicious! Greek yogurt, cottage cheese+applesauce, and avocado as well.

Soft food stage- out to eat?

I ate mashed potatoes at kfc (only a few spoon fulls). When my family ate out I took a yogurt with me or I stopped and bought a pre made protein shake. It worked for me because we have 3 small kids and I usually dont sit and enjoy a leisurely meal anyway. Good luck to you. If you dont think you can keep from eating things you shouldnt then I say stay home. I just tried to remember that it is only a short time and food is only for nutrients not enjoyment.

    Don't want to eat!!!

It was very hard for me to eat at first. I did have low grade nausea for a while but it went away around the end of the first month. Don't worry about rushing, your poor little tummy has been through alot! It has been cut and stapled and has a lot of healing to do. My doctor had me on full fluids for the first two weeks and the only real food on my list was greek yogurt. I have noticed from other posts that different doctors seem to recommend different things. So just do what your body is telling you for now. If you aren't feeling better after the weekend, perhaps you should just give a call and see what the doctor says.

    why no carbs phase two?

Plain greek yogurt does not have that many carbs. I'm thinking you got the sweetened kind. Get the plain and add sf syrup as pp suggested. It's also nice to use as a dip. Just mi seasonings in it, dry ranch dressing, dill, garlic and herbs, etc. and it makes a great dip for veggies or meat.
  23. LOL, my old normal post surg = Rosemary's Baby bad deliveries once every 4-5 days. Holy crap! So bad. Since adding lots and lots of psyllium fiber + daily "meds" + lots of veg + water, I get big fluffy, painless, 1lb poops daily. It's my "NEW NORMAL" and I owe it all to my daily plan. I never deviate from it: Miralax 17g in black decaff coffee 2 Colace stool softeners 11g Now Brand whole psyllium husks divided into 2 cups of room temp Cinnamon Apple Spice Tea (decaff) 1/2c Greek yogurt with live cultures 1 GG Brancrisp Fiber Cracker + 1 tbsp almond butter each night before bed 100+oz plain water, plain decaff coffee, plain decaff green tea, plain matcha It is totes worth doing this! The psyllium husks and fiber cracker fluff up the poop and the Greek yogurt with cultures along with the psyllium is helping to repair my gut biome. The water is super duper important otherwise you make concrete.

    skim milk

Hi Kylea.. I used to have about 2 cups of skim milk a day.. it was the major contributor to my proteins.. i could not keep the clear liquid protein drinks down.. I also used to have fat free yogurt.. thinned/whisked with 2 parts water..
  25. You can also thin out yogurt with milk or by blending in a nutra bullet. However if you are not feeling ready to progress to the next food stage, let your nutritionist know. There's no need to move forward until you are ready if it's going to cause you pain & discomfort.
