I believe they do that during surgery but they did make sure that I could pee, walk around some as well as eat a little food without too much issue. I had some yogurt and potatoes. Sent from my SM-F700U using BariatricPal mobile app

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
kellym1220 replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor only had clear liquid through day 2, so I’ve been on full liquid, including strained soups and Greek yogurt, since day 4. (It could have been day 3, but I wasn’t up to much on day 3!). I am also a rule follower, so I totally get it! But I can’t imagine 2 weeks of clear liquid diet! Strained cream of chicken with added genepro protein made with 1% milk has been my go to for one meal each day. -
I recently bought a bunch of seasonings from Flavor God. Nacho cheese is good on pureed refried beans and mashed cauliflower. Buttered cinnamon roll is good on applesauce (helps to cover up the taste of the Genepro protein powder I add to is). Pizza is good on the famous ricotta bake. I also bought everything seasoning, taco Tuesday, and lemon garlic but haven't tried them yet. I like sugar-free caramel syrup in applesauce and tea. And I like to mix chocolate protein powder and PB2 powdered peanut butter into Oikos Triple Zero yogurt.

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Repeatingthoughts replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi everyone, I am feeling really well. Still cant tolerate protein shakes, no matter what brand/flavor/homemade it is. I am still able to get my protein in through other approved measures. I cant wait to move to thin purees this Friday and eat a little more protein based foods other than yogurt. So far I am down 18lbs since surgery. Hope you are all well and wishing everyone a speedy recovery. Cheers to August! -
I spent a lot of money on protein but I can't drink any of it
DimsumQueen posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone. I'm on pre-op and I bought enough protein to last into post-op. Stupidly. Isopure unflavored Isopure zero carb vanilla Nectar lemon ice tea Premier protein pack of 12 clear protein peach Reccomended by the clinic doing the surgery. Reccomended based on my issues - I'm lactose intolerant. I dislike milk in general. I don't enjoy milkshakes. The first clear protein peach was nice. The first nectar was ok, minis the off putting color that made me feel weird. Tasting a clear liquid liked iced tea, but brain saw a milky liquid in the glass. Day two, I try the vanilla from isopure. Smells makes me gag. Added matcha powder in it. Still disgusting. Tried putting some isopure unflavored in to lukewarm beef stock. Chalky. Starts to clump. Manage to drink it. Day three, I try another clear drink. This time it tastes too sweet. And the aftertaste is sickening. Later that day I try another lemon ice tea. I'm literally gag at the smell. I have to hold my nose to chug it. I don't know what to do. I stupidly spent a lot of money on this stuff trying to be prepared, we're moving house the weekend after my surgery, I also don't drive, which is why I ordered so much in advance. Today I'm lying in bed, 6 days until surgery, and even the thought of Greek yogurt and cottage cheese makes me sick. Protein powder sounds like a torture right now. Help a milk-hater out. TLDR: diary of my protein powder tasting. It's all disgusting. Please give advice. -
6 yrs post op - weight gain - seeking support
JessLess replied to Domika03's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can do it! I gained 14 lbs, turned things around, and have lost 2 over the past week or so. I lose slowly at under 1500 calories a day. Breakfast: 1 egg, 2oz lox, 1/2 cup fruit, coffee with a little 1% milk Lunch: Healthy Choice Powerbowl (low carb) or similar Dinner: Fish, vegetable, occasionally brown rice or carbanada low carb pasta Snacks if I am actually hungry: fat free yogurt, banana, 1/2 cup Julian's low carb granola, unsweetened almond milk, low fat cheese stick, etc. I take a walk/run with my dogs for about 2 miles a day and do Pilates 2x a week. I'd like to add back weightlifting when it's safe to go back to the gym. Knocking off the number of snacks seems to have been the main issue for me. I would track and see where the extra calories have snuck in and see what you can live without. Good luck! -
Myotomy and sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD
Foxbins replied to Foxbins's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did my weekly weigh-in today and I've gained 2 lbs. Not real, stuck on the hips pounds because in order to gain 2 real pounds in a week I'd have to have eaten 1000 calories a day, every day, over my calorie expenditure, which I didn't do. What I did do is eat a lot of Asian recipes this week. All are high in sodium, so I suspect I'm holding on to some water weight, but I wanted some strong flavors after yogurt, egg salad, and cottage cheese these past weeks. So I broke out the fish sauce, soy sauce, and made some quick cucumber pickles. Everything was delicious. I tried half a toasted English muffin, seemed to sit well. I haven't vomited at all, or dumped. Maybe I'll escape that. I am walking 5000+ steps a day and I will add some yoga and squats I think. I still feel like I'm wearing a corset, a tightness under the skin. It's odd but not painful. My incisions have all healed and the scab from the hole where the drain exited has finally fallen off. I still get some odd pains here and there, mostly around my belly button. I am taking a 750mg psyllium capsule each morning and have not had a problem with constipation despite falling short of my 64 oz fluid goal a couple of days this week. And best of all, still no GERD, no regurgitation, and I started swallowing full size pills without a problem this week. I have a telephone appt with the surgeon's office on Friday and I hope I can stop taking omeprazole then. -
I edited the above because I left out a word. "Recipe" #1 - I used Greek yogurt mixed WITH fruit or SF pudding mix (I left out the word WITH in my original post)

I have some cheap ones I got a grocery store a few years ago - they're still OK - but I bought these on amazon a few months ago and like them even better: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GDXHSZ2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 the two ways I make them: 1) Greek yogurt mixed fruit or SF pudding mix 2) SF pudding mix mixed with unsweetened almond (or cashew) milk + 2 or 3 scoops of protein powder neither of these recipes are super low in calories (but then...I'm in maintenance), but they have a fair amount of protein in them, which I need...

2 day post op pain
locura79 replied to MotivatedMomma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, I had gastric sleeve yesterday, and my post-op diet is clear liquids for 2 weeks, all liquids for two weeks, then pureed foods for 2 weeks. Yogurt is included in the all liquids section, and cottage cheese doesn't come in until the pureed phase at week 5. Pre Op - Post Op Handout Level 1.pdf -
I'm on day 16 and I read my grocery list to my dietitian and she was pretty okay with it. Mix it up. I try to buy things I can easy mix in my Genepro. I bought Wholly Guacamole, Applesauce, Yogurt, Deli Meat. I also agree, baby spoon is something I want to buy. The only time I felt stomach pain was with my diet lemonade, stay away from citrus. Sorry to hear you are going through this.

Has anyone out there developed diabetes AFTER surgery? I am 6 years out and not overweight but feel sick after I eat high carb meals. Usually things that contain bread or cereal and milk or yogurt. I feel like I’m in a sugar coma- very sleepy, short of breath, nauseous etc usually 15 minutes after I eat. I started testing my blood sugar and found my sugar was high when I am feeling this way- like well over 200. As I started testing throughout the day, I also see I am having very large deviations from highs to lows. Is anyone else unable to tolerate these foods and has anyone else develop diabetes after surgery when you are not overweight?

My VSG Journey with Dr. Illan
_Chonk_ replied to _Chonk_'s topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi everyone! I sincerely apologize that I didn't update you sooner, but I wanted to take a little more time for healing before I came here to share how things went, and my outcome. My surgery in Mexico went very well, and Dr. Illan & his staff are truly amazing. I can tell you 100% that the experience in terms of surgical skill, and post-op care, was as good as, or if not better than what I have experienced in the US. They are true healers and I am so blessed for having found them. I was literally terrified, even going over my account numbers and password with my son before being wheeled off into surgery, and redoing my will & ensuring all financial directives were in order before heading to Mexico, in case something terrible happened. But I can report to you that my experience during the immediate postop, and since then, in the almost two weeks since I got home on July 20th, has been uneventful in a wonderful way. The day after surgery was the most painful day, and I did vomit a little bit of blood. I also experienced a low grade fever and high blood pressure for the first 4-5 days after surgery, as well as the continual gas pains from the CO2 that you are blown up with during surgery, and overall dizziness and exhaustion. But those are all normal reactions to a major surgery. Dr. Illan told me that he used a 36 french bougie on me, rather than the 34, maybe due to my low BMI (?), and dissected my antrum 3-4 cm from the pylorus to help negate after-surgery GERD, and was careful to remove all my fundus & tightly oversew the staple line; but my son said that the photo he took of my stomach was surprisingly small, although I never saw that photo. I will see after time how large my stomach is, and hope it remains tiny enough to restrict food and hunger for a long time. My 4 incisions are healing well, and the worst gas pain which occurs right under my sternum and radiates to my left shoulder, is almost gone at day 13. That type of pain can be a late leak, so I watched it carefully, but it has abated, so I think all is well. I never experienced the dehydration I was afraid of, because I have carefully drank electrolyte enhanced beverages sip by sip as soon as I was out of the hospital. I also surprisingly did not have the expected migraines except for the first few days after surgery, because I have been a nazi about liquid intake. I graduated to smooth soups and low fat greek yogurt a few days ago, and even tried some pureed hamburger today, and was able to get that down after burning it to a crisp in the microwave. My diet staples have been sugar free pedialite popsicles, 0 calorie vitamin water, chicken broth and several brands of pre-mixed and self-mixed protein powder. I was dizzy and exhausted into the second week, and on day 7 added in liquid vitamins, as well as half of an iron tablet chewable, because my hematocrit and hemoglobin was low & I felt I was becoming anemic. Within a day or so, my energy came back strongly. I am always careful to take some protein drink or greek yogurt with my liquid vitamins, and take the acid reflux meds away from the vitamins so they can be absorbed. At almost two weeks, I feel like the swelling in my stomach has gone way down, because I can drink liquids quite easily again. I have lost about 17 pounds including the pre-diet, but I was not a super-high BMI to begin with, so I expected a slower weight loss. I have to say that it has been surprising that many days I lose 1/2 pound or less when I am eating 300-500 calories per day. I have had no sense of hunger since the day of my surgery, and pray to God that continues. The head hunger has not been an issue while I am awake, but only during sleep, when I have strange dreams involving food, wherein I obsessively dream about food, chowing down on thousands and calories, and then awake in fear I have destroyed my new sleeve, before quickly realizing it was all a bad dream. Those dreams have subsided somewhat over the past couple of days, and were the most intense on the night of surgery and first week of post-op. My unconscious mind was coming around to the realization that something had happened to my body, and was trying to process the loss of food as a comfort tool. I am struggling now with lots of fatigue, and alternating between feeling so much better that I want to get out and exercise again, and having no motivation to do anything. I am attributing this to the low calorie diet, and hormonal or neurochemical changes that happen after extreme dieting imposed by a surgery like this. My period came a few days early due to the surgery, and was extremely painful with cramps, etc, which I learned through research is attributable to "hormone dumping" which happens when estrogen stored in fat cells is released quickly into the blood stream after quick fat loss. I've been tracking my blood ketones with a meter and I am solidly in ketosis each day, which I expected with a low carb, high protein & low calorie diet. I wish I could exercise again, to try and improve my energy levels, and improve my mental fog, but am afraid of causing a leak, as I have read stories about people who opened their incisions, or developed an abdominal leak from exercising soon after surgery. I am walking every day, and did some heavy yard work yesterday, but look forward to getting back into a sustained and vigorous exercise routine, if for nothing else my state of mind, as it feels odd to have days of exhaustion and no motivation to do anything. I'm sure that's serotonin/diet related, and surgical healing related as well, as the body works very hard to repair itself after a surgery like this. That's about all I can think of to report on right now, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about Dr. Illan, my experience in Mexico, or my healing from the surgery. take care! -

I just started the pre-op diet. It is just 4-5 protein shakes, jello, broth, and plain yogurt. It’s tough but we can all get through it as we can see a future at the end.

Whole-Food Plant-Based Nutrition Resources
AZhiker replied to PollyEster's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I make my own cheesy sauce that is great with pasta or veggies like broccoli. I do not use the processed products, as I don't think they taste that good, they are expensive, and I try not to use processed food products as a rule. To make a cheesy like sauce, I soak cashews for 30 to 60 minutes in hot water. Then I put them in the blender with a cooked yellow potato, soy milk, a small avocado, and sometimes some tofu.. Add a good amount of nutritional yeast and some miso paste, pepper to taste. Blend until smooth. The avocado taste does NOT come through, but the fat makes it "creamier." I will admit that the Beyond Beef burgers are pretty tasty. I might have one of those once a month or so, but not often. My protein comes from a wide variety of legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, tofu, tempeh, soy milk/yogurt or Nancy's Oatmilk yogurt which is pretty high in protein. I easily get 60 grams a day. Sometimes I will add a half scoop of protein powder to a smoothie or yogurt bowl. -
Help me! 10Days post op

Most patients are on full liquid diets on day 10 postop. Your surgeon allows yogurt this soon? Are you eating fat free plain Greek yogurt? Or name brand, carb-loaded regular yogurt? Stats: 5'1", age 67, female. Highest weight: 245. BMI 41. Surgery Date: May 28, 2020. Weight at surgery: 211. VSG. -
Hi! I am 10 days post gastric bypass surgery, but I am really scared because I am able to eat a lot of yogurt and I’m scared I stretched my pouch! Is this possible or am I spiraling?

I am not even getting 24-30 oz in. Plain water, which I used to drink a gallon of a day, feels like it burns my pouch, so I have started doing electrolyte fluids to stay hydrated. I get 2-3 small sips in and fee like it is all going to come up, but it doesn’t. Then it is another 45 min before I can get anymore sips in. As for food/protein, it is a total struggle. I did ok my first week, then as I started drinking protein shakes again, I found my pouch cannot tolerate it. So, I took your suggestion of the Gene-Pro tasteless protein powder and am going to start trying to make my own shakes with a non-dairy milk. I noticed people talking about a ticker on here. I have never posted on forums before, so how do I get my updated info into the profile? Hi everyone! I am grannyliz, a young granny of 8. My gastric bypass was on May 7th and boy has it been a life changer, Mentally and physically. So far I have lost roughly 60 lbs. I didn't think I really needed a support group until now. I have been struggling with trying to get fluids in me and literally no appetite whatsoever. Like, I literally am NEVER hungry. Just getting 2-3 oz of greek yogurt in me is a struggle. I have been reading through the posts on here and have taken several of the suggestions to heart, so a very big thank you to those who have been posting suggestions. I pray those that are recovering from their surgery are doing well. -

I had bypass on 12/31. I was SO nervous the morning of surgery but overall I had a pretty easy recovery. I made a commitment to myself before going in to the hospital that any time they asked I would walk (and I would ask to walk if they didn't ask at least every 2 hours). I think that really helped keep the gas pains down and set me up for an easier recovery. They had me drinking water & crystal light and eating SF Jello in the hospital (maybe 2 tiny bites is all I could get in with the swelling) and they had me taking my vitamins the next day (I triple checked since that seemed crazy but I had no issues). My program also had us on modified liquids from day 2, so I had a tiny bit of greek yogurt my first day home and it was fine. I took tiny bites, and waited to see how I felt between bites. It's crazy how quickly you get full but makes sense when you think about the size of your new stomach and the swelling. I always had water by my side and sipped pretty much every 10 mins (aside from 30 mins after eating). The first week I walked around the house 5 or 6 times a day and then I moved outside and quickly got up to a mile (I still try to do around 2 most days). I was definitely tired and fatigued the first month or so, but after the first day home I didn't need to nap or anything else - just took it easy aside from my walking. Congratulations and good luck! -
Very interesting... I think the post-op diets may be similarly variable as the pre-op diets. In your case, yogurt is part of the pureed stage, but in my post-op diet staging, yogurt was part of the full liquid phase. I've been eating yogurt and no-sugar-added applesauce since 2 days after surgery without issue. Go figure... I agree that jerky would not be good due to its texture and consistency. Still, regardless of what the "infraction" is, I don't think it's worth feeling guilt over. Perhaps I have a different perspective, in that while I fully intend to comply with the phases of the diet progression, there's also the safety net in that if you proceed too quickly or eat something you shouldn't, your body will let you know pretty darned quickly that you shouldn't have done that. It's like a child and a hot stove... once you burn yourself, you'll know not to touch it again. I've been lucky thus far, in that nothing I've yet ingested post-surgery, whether type of food or amount or pace, has triggered any nausea, let alone vomiting, dumping, etc. The only negative has been if I eat or drink something too quickly, I'll feel a bit of heartburn-like pressure. That's my signal to put on the brakes. Thus far it's passed in about 10-15 seconds. I presume that as I add more food types to my diet, I'm likely to encounter combinations/types that my system will not tolerate, but thus far (knock on wood) I've been lucky in that regard.
