  1. you wont lose every time. this definately sounds like the 3 week stall. everyone goes through stalls. i am in one now. just posted about it and how i was feeling nervous about it. that is what is so great about having this place to vent and to get support. youll get through it!
  2. Yes you are in the 3 week stall. Don't fret! I was having a fit but trust me it is totally normal and it will pass. Don't even sweat it!!
  3. Fern, thanks so much. I could just hug you right now! I will look up 3 week stall. I know I need to relax - and that sounds like it worked for you.
  4. Look up the 3 week stall. It happens to most of us and I happened to me at 2 weeks too. Your body is rebelling and needs the time to recover. You dr. is right. Work on your fluids. Your body can live without food waayyy longer than without liquids. You'll get there and you'll start losing again. I found that once I relaxed about the losing, I actually lost more.
  5. I had the sleeve Oct 31, Excited over losing 20 lbs, and then it quit-----------Arghhhhh, I read it was the 3 week stall, but it is making me crazy, I keep thinking I am doing something wrong!
  6. Hello VST Fam.... I am now leading into my 9th week (yeahhhhh...I'm getting there). Anyway, like everyone else was stating on here, I reached the dreaded 3 weeks stall. My stall lasted for 5 weeks...yikes! But it's true. I tried everything to break my stall, ie. working out more, getting in more Water, getting in more portein, etc. Then, one morning after my workout I stopped in a Krogers. I was craving.....FOR CARBS! So, I bought some Kroger brand French Toast. It has like 16grams of Protein. Only like...230 calories for 2 slices. Still being knew, I didn't know if my tummy could handle bread, but I was willing to try. Sooo, I went home and fixed me 1 slice of toast and 2 slices of turkey bacon. I had plenty of water after I had finished. Showered, got dressed and went on about my day -- monitoring the affects of the bread on my tummy. No side affects, great! Sooo, the next day I did the same thing. By day 3 -- I had dropped 5lbs after a 5 week stall!!! 7lbs in that today week. I had finally broke my stall, and lead myself into ONDERLAND!!! If you are further out (beyond 1month), and you have reached a stall --reintroducing a carb might be the trick. I have literally put carbs back into my diet. I have been exercising like crazy, and wanted to see some results. My body was going into starvation mode! I was loosing inches (and I have created a topic on this.. ), but not loosing lbs.. I personally, needed the lbs. *Note: Someone said to me, lbs are not that important! I informed her, when you are like myself and have high blood pressure, or other ailgments that you might be dealing with -- and you go to your PCP, your doctor doesn't say "Come over here and let me measure you. No! They say, please step on the scale". Soooo, in this case -- lbs are VERY IMPORTANT! Especially, if I ever plan to get off my medicine, permanently. -------------------- Ok enough said! Please, feel free to share your "Stall Breakers". Please tell how long you have stalled and what worked for you to get the scale moving again!!! (Congrats to all of you on all your accomplishments with VSG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
  7. You aren't losing because your body needs to rest and recover. Look up the dreaded 3 week stall. Sounds like your in it! As for all the throwing up, I would stay on thick liquids for longer. You don't want to throw up and put pressure on your stitches. Purée soups and add no flavor protein powder to it. Make your own chicken stock ( better protein) and just drink that. Let the swelling come down then thicken the soups more and more till really thick. THEN go to thicker mushies. My doctor said it best: no one is alike. Just because you CAN move onto the next food stage, doesn't mean your body will allow you to. Listen to your body and all will be fine. Good luck!

Need to vent - So frustrated

Gee, The 3 week stall is VERY real. I don't know the scientific explanation either, but I truly believe it's related to your body going into starvation mode. Once your body accepts that you won't be giving it the tons of food we were giving it before, then the stall will break. And, you'll stall every now and again because you're eating too much, or not eating enough, or not moving enough, or moving so much that your body is converting fat to muscle. However, overall, you (we) will lose weight. I'm stuck just under the 300 mark right now and have been here for a week or so. However, I'm exercising more than ever, just added treadmill tonight, yay me! I can feel my clothes getting loser and I'm betting things are shifting for you as well. I broke my 3 week stall by ADDING food to my diet, instead of subtracting. I added in a few carbs and added more Water. TMI, then I started going regularly. I happen to love the days I go, because I immediately see the results in the scale. Many years ago, a friend of mine told me that the weight we lose doesn't magically evaporate...it has to go somewhere. So, every bodily function uses up some of that: sweating, breathing, and potty times all rid the body of it's excesses. It was a DUH moment for me. Good luck on your journey!! You are going to get there...and I can't wait to see your pictures!!

Need to vent - So frustrated

I am so sorry to hear your struggling, but may i offer one small tidbit of advise. Get rid of the scale and don't weigh except at your doctor appts. I did that and never saw that 3 week stall everyone talks about or anything, just consistent losses. I was very happy about that. Now at 2 years out I am maintaining, going up and down between about 10 lbs, but i've reached my doctors goal for me and that is wonderful. Good luck and try that for about your first year.

    ONEDERLAND

I hit a 3 week stall. I had started exercising like a mad woman. I wanted so much to break 200 pounds for the first time in years. I was walking 2-4 miles a day plus a 30 min walk on my lunch at work. Nothing. I went to see my doctor for my 3 month check up. I complained about the 3 week stall. My dietitian looked at my exercise and food journal. I was worried maybe I was getting too many carbs. She smiled as I complained bitterly about the 3 week stall. "Well, Stalls do happen. We have to be patient with them- but I can tell you something that I have noticed." I braced myself for her to tell me to stop putting creamer in my tea of the mornings. "You have probably never heard this before in your life- but you aren't getting enough calories." She laughed at my stunned look. She went on to tell me 3 months into the surgery she wanted me to be shooting for 1000-1200 calories a day. On my big eating days I was gettin 600. She said with the amount of exercise I had been getting I was sending my body into starvation mode- and it was just getting used to surviving on so few calories. Humm. I didn't walk yesterday. Mom and I ate at a steakhouse. I had 3 bites of salad, 2 bites of steak and 3 bites of potato. No bread- I don't have room in my belly for that. Later that day I even had dessert. Now I know when Marsha told me to get more calories she didn't mean sweets. Don't hate on me. It was a special occasion and I had 5 bites. 5 very small bites. I got on the scales this morning and I was 200.0. No Way! There was no way I was going to go about my day being 1 small ounce away from onederland. So, I took off my socks- swapped my chucky glasses for contacts and blew my nose. 199.6 I was so excited i threw a robe on and ran downstairs to get my camera. I hopped back on the scale camera in hand waiting to snap shot the moment I hit onderland. 201.3 Oh how I moped. I brushed my hair and grumbled. Then it hit me- I weighed myself with my camera in my hand. I tried it again this time had the camrea ready- but sitting on the sink. ONEDERLAND. I am excited. very excited. I have saved fireworks for just this occasion. It has been bitter cold these days but I am thrilled I will get to set them off before we are covered up in snow. wooooohoooooo

    STALL!! STALL STALL STALLLLLL

I am 8 weeks out and have been experiencing steady weight loss....unit last week! I read all about the 3 week stalls and since i was beyond 3 weeks thought I was in the clear. But i've been at 231 since October 31. I did take a bit of a break as far as working out daily (walking/bike), and I know i've been eating more carbs than previously. Maybe that has something to do with it. I just can't help but to worry, "Is this all i"m going to lose??" I would hate to have gone through this whole ordeal and then only lose a minimal amount of weight.

Experts - Does it go away? Get easier?

The hunger hormone is still in your body... your stomach is injured and in healing mode.. your fat is unloading estrogen that makes you crazy for a while (if your a gal)...Your stomach can't yet feel if its full or not because a bunch of nerves were cut during surgery... you could possibly have acid if not taking a ppi..that can mimic hunger... and you are BOARD out of your gourd because you are restricted to what you can eat and how much after years of eating whatever however much food you want to distract and comfort. All huge changes from our old norm. Soon the swelling will go down, the stomach will relax, The hunger hormone will subside, and your food choices will get broader. Things will look more like normal pretty soon. You MUST measure your food and eat the right foods for a little longer... you do not want to tempt a leak or strain that raw staple line at this point! One thing you can do is measure, then eat extra small bites, stretch the meal time out to 30-45 minutes for a 1/4 cup... not kidding here! It helps the brain to appreciate the food a little longer... if you are going too crazy suck on a sugar free mint, or drink mint tea. Write everything down you eat, even if you slip up and graze. Its good to be accountable for what goes down the hatch. Perhaps 7 small meals would work better than 3 meals and a snack. I eat from boredom sometimes too... but I write it down and adjust later to keep in line. Many people go into the infamous 3 week stall too... Mine lasted I think 4 weeks and started around 2 1/2 weeks... this can mess with your head too... just keep doing what the Doc ordered and you will get though it. Minutes go slowly, the the year will fly by... do what you need to do now, work on it, find things you can do to help get you over the few minutes a day that can lead to ruin. drink you water, save a bite from your measured meal to "cheat" with later... use those protein shakes as medicine... they help you get in liquid, protein and fill you up for a while without grating on the stomach line. Remember, your stomach is not healed as much as it will until AFTER 6 weeks. Hang in there, its so worth it!
  13. Juzme, I think you've hit a stall. I drink decaf tea with splenda daily and I've had no problems with it. I did have the dreaded 3 week stall. It lasted 2 weeks, then I had a big drop, so I don't think Splenda affects me. Try changing things up and see if something jump starts the weight loss. Losing splenda is as good a thing to mix up as anything else.
  14. Yep I am in the 3 week stall. Also having a hard time with several foods, and the protein drinks.. My Dr said to hang in there, the problem with food and drink is worst in the the morning and I guess this is not that unusual. But I have been in a stall for a week now. Just how long does this last?

    Still Scared

Don't set yourself up for failure by thinking you wont lose. Do a search of the 3 week stall and you will be amazed at how MANY posts there are, most people don't have a loss around the 2-4th week. You just had major surgery and your body is trying to keep up. Please save your sanity and don't compare yourself to others, we are all different and we all lose different. Just keep doing what you need to do One more thing, I know people worry about stalls, just try to ignore them, it will happen. I refuse to think of it as a stall unless I was doing everything right and still stayed at the same weight for at least a month.
  16. Hey all! I am doing very well, no complications. I actually almost don't believe they really did the surgery! LOL. My only gripe is that I seem to be losing much more slowly than anybody else on here. I lost about 10 lbs. since surgery day, including actual 2 pound fluctuations (some days I was up 1-2 pounds). I guess this is the dreaded and much talked about 2-3 week stall? I am being patient. I am amazed at how little I can eat and have been trying to make good choices, although I did cave yesterday and have some Peanut M&Ms. Interestingly enough, I lost weight even after that goof up. Anyway, I want to say thank you all so much for all of your support. It is so nice to have a specific group that had the procedure around the same time so that we can accurately gauge our progress/challenges against those that are at exactly the same stage as ourselves. I find it hard to relate to the "veterans" sometimes. Their reality it so far away from being mine. I can't even begin to discuss non-scale victories right now. It's too early. It's all about the scale. We are still skeptics at this stage. I need this sleeve to show and prove! :-)

    Feeling discouraged

17 pounds in 5 weeks is almost 3.5 pounds per week... which is really awesome!!!!!! Especially if you were able to avoid the 3 week stall. I know that everyone wants stellar results, especially during the first couple months but please remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. 3.5 pounds per week is above average and is a lot more healthy than dropping a ton right away (like the by-pass patients...). I am four weeks out and have lost 56 pounds, but that includes what I lost in the 4 months pre-op. At first when I was seeing numbers like 3 pounds in two weeks, 4 pounds, etc... it was discouraging. But looking back... I'm really proud of it and happy that I was able to do that. Chin up and don't worry! Keep up the good work on the Protein and keep drinking your Water and you'll get there!

    Weight Stall

Hey there! You don't say when you had surgery, but if you're still within the first month post-op, you may have hit the dreaded 2- to 3-week stall. There's a scientific reason for it, but it catches most newbies off guard. There could be a lot of reasons for your stall--I would say maybe try to up your calories a bit with good Protein, be sure you're getting enough Fluid, and keep doing what you're doing. You know with your head that what you're doing is bound to cause weight loss eventually--just hang in there. Stalls SUCK!!

    Feeling discouraged

Hi there! Hey, 17 pounds is 17 pounds! I know it can be discouraging not to see huge losses in the first month, but there might be any number of reasons for this. First, did you do a pre-op diet? People who do sometimes do start out post-surgery losing more slowly. Are you starting at a lower BMI? Are you a band-to-sleeve conversion? Are you hypothyroid? All of these things can lead to a slower starting weight loss. Don't panic, and try not to be discouraged. Everybody loses at a different rate. You might be super carb sensitive; are you eating low-carb now? Be sure you're getting your Water in--being dehydrated can make a big difference to weight loss. And for some people, exercise can make a big difference. You might also be in a longer-term 3-week stall.... If you're doing all the "right" things, don't panic. Your body may still just be adjusting to post-surgery reality. I'm so sorry you're struggling. Keep us posted on how you're doing!
  20. I seem to have hit the 3-week stall at the 2-week mark. Please comment!

  21. Oh, sweetie, hang in there!! We've ALL been there, one way or another. Your body is freaking out because of the new reality it finds itself in. You know for a fact that nothing you're doing is causing weight gain--your body is probably retaining fluids, and those will flush out eventually, too. Just keep doing what you can do and stay hydrated. I know when you're eating so little, you feel like the weight should just be dropping off visibly--and there will probably be weeks when it does! Just keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like your 3-week stall just happened a little bit later than some.
  22. For all the South Florida Sleevers, I'm working on starting a support group in St Lucie County. So far, I've got about 4 people besides me who are interested. My closest group (that I know of) is in Sebastian and I can't always get there. If anyone else is interested, just post on here or send me a PM. In other news, I'm finally breaking my stall!! I've dropped 3 lbs, including the two I've been bouncing on for the last two weeks. I did a bit of experimenting, adding food, subtracting food, adding carbs, etc. to get this stall to break. I've really tried hard to not worry about it and just let things happen since it was my 3 week stall from surgery. However, I did compare my first after-surgery picture to myself this morning and I can see that things have tightened up somewhat. Since that pic is nude, I will NOT be posting it here! LOL I will try to take a pic in the next couple of days and post it for you all. Even I can see what a difference 43 pounds makes!!!

I just weigh myself whenever I'm curious about my weight. SN..............Starting Wt........Current.......Goal.......Lbs to Goal Kala.................200.2...............191.1........185.............6.1
  24. Thanks for the information. I think I will stop using the gummies when they run out and move to the pills. Mr. Mike, I feel the same way that you feel. I am happy as long as the scale is going down and not up. I feel so much better. I am able to walk long distances, I have more energy. I just feel like a new person. If my doctor would not have given me the goal to lose 15 lbs in one month, I really wouldn't care. My doctor is very strict and he doesn't sugar coat anything. When I told him that my body had a 3 week stall, and the scale was just starting to move again and I hoped to do better next month. He basically told me (not his exact words) that the information about the stall was bull. He has hundreds of patients and they all lose weight if they follow his guidelines. The info about the stall was just an excuse or people trying to make you feel better because you didn't lose anything. He told me that I will lose most of my weight during the first 6 months. So, I need to work as hard as I can to get the most weight off now. If I don't get the weight off the only person that will lose is myself. I have mixed feeling about our talk, because I was so stressed going in for my visit. I wasn't sure what he would say or do, and I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong or why I wasn't losing weight. I was looking on the message boards and talking to people in my support group. It seemed like having a stall was perfectly normal. My doctor doesn’t like nutritionist and doesn't think I need to visit one. But, I just feel like this is all new, and I have so much to learn. How am I suppose to get the help I need. Like talking to him for a few minutes and I found out something that I was doing wrong -such as egg salad (he told me to eat the egg alone and not to make egg salad, it adds too many calories) and the carbs in Vitamins. I have Kaiser and I had to meet with a nut for 6 months and take classes, but I didn't have my surgery until almost a year after those classes. Now, that I had the procedure and I am learning to work my sleeve I still need guidance. Anyway, I know I am starting to rant. I am only 7 weeks out, I am down 47 lbs. I am happy...but I know I still have a lot to learn. Toyia
  25. The dreaded "3 week stall" will end- don't worry, it does for pretty much everyone! I also hit that stall pretty early at 2 weeks post op and stayed around 200-202 for 3 weeks. Just recently has the scale dropped. I finally dropped to 198.6 and broke into Onederland on 9/17. I weighed myself today and I'm down to 193.3! The slowed weight loss can be discouraging- I had dropped 20 lbs in less than 2 weeks and then, BAM! - no weight loss. I realistically couldn't expect to lose 2 lbs a day for the rest of my weight loss journey. I lost over 30 lbs in less than 2 months, so I try to keep in mind that I would have NEVER lost that completely on my own. Especially in such a short period of time! I've lost over a third of my EWL. Stalls are terrible, but they happen. I don't want to stay at 193.3, but I am so much happier with my body now. My self image has improved greatly. At 7 weeks post-op, this is a great accomplishment for me. My clothes are baggier, and I can wear my old shirts that I had gotten too fat to wear comfortably. People have noticed I've lost weight- including all the people who didn't know I had surgery. Everyone's experience is different, and with the sleeve our weight loss will be slower than people who had the DS or RNY. Comparing our weight loss to other people is a double-edged sword; it's inspiring, but can also cause us to doubt ourselves and our own achievements.
